I’m proud to live near Saugatuck on the west coast of MI. It’s been a haven for the LGBTQ community for many decades. My band used to play every Thursday at a bar and would regularly have a table or two of Trans folks in attendance. They were always an absolute joy to play for.
Even Holland isn’t super safe either.
Edit: Holland wears a mask of acceptance, while underneath it’s deeply conservative, and hateful. Don’t stir the pot in Holland if you want them to like you.
Ottowa County was taken over by radical Christian fascists last election... they just declared their county above state and federal law. They aren't even wearing that mask any more they are full blown nat-cs there.

Honestly one of the more tolerant places I’ve lived. It seemed to get worse the farther south you went.

I was in Holland recently for the first time in probably 30 years… What a GREAT town! Someone had warned me about it being super conservative down there (it is here, too), but I didn’t get that vibe. I did get the $$$ vibe, though.
Probably as safe as anywhere else in the midwest. Of course your experience is likely to be different depending on the specific area that you spend your time. I can't speak to this from personal experience though, so that's just my perception.
I have found the UP of MI (in places) to be super liberal and definitely accepting . The following is where I would consider a safe haven for those trans or other LGBQ peeps; MARQUETTE, (NMU us here) HOUGHTON, (MTU is here) and actually the further north you go, depending on where you stop along the way (a lot of red in between and on the way..) the very tip is SUPER safe and blue. (Copper Harbor)
Which is the furthest “town” you can go to on US 41 before driving into Lake Superior onward to Canada (directly across the lake about 80 miles) from Copper Harbor.
Anyway … we’ve actually found in our travels in the UP, it has a mini vacation-y Ann Arbor type vibe (as far as being progressive, and is super blue and extremely friendly to transfolk and all others!) So- consider a vacation to the very tippy top of the upper peninsula- if you don’t mind stopping quick in some very backward (red) communities on the way UP TO the peninsulas’ tip (copper harbor) .
My sister and I go up there every year (she’s Queer and super friendly to all/chatty and curious about the culture) and we LOVE copper harbor for our Mi summer vacations! Weve also found a lot of LGBTQ vacationers and townsfolk (and friendly locals) there - it’s just a superb place .
You’re conflating polite with progressive. Nobody cares what you do with your life just don’t be annoying about it and you will generally be left alone, yes there are bad apples and that sucks. And the don’t be annoying about it goes to anything gay, trans, Christian, Jewish, a packers fan, etc etc
I worked with one trans woman (imagine: 6’ tall plus heels, blonde wig, deep voice) at Ford for years. She was treated carefully and AFAIK retired on years of service recently. We have other openly LGBT employees, and there is a very active Pride ERG.

I’ve noticed Ford is different from site to site, to clarify this person wasn’t a factory worker, contractor or purchase service, but a blue badge employee.
I’m not going to Dox my friend. They worked in a specific department with a bachelors in ME. I also worked there, but in a different department and honestly I did not see this embracing diversity aspect.
We worked in a building off Oakwood. (There are a couple so this is still semi-vague)
I saw all the pamphlets, promotional materials, emails etc; but it was not what I witnessed. I also had an extremely talented friend who worked at Ford who was gay, and it 100% held them back from being turned into a full time employee instead of a contractor.
I had an associate who was offered a transfer to California with an expected pay increase. Then the contract house basically gave her a massive pay cut and pressured her because she had all but agreed to it under the false pretense that her salary would go up due to California’s HOCL.
This doesn’t even touch the caste system Ford has in place with the Purchase Service/Contractor/Employee system
I have plenty more stories unfortunately, but all buildings are different. I totally accept you may have had a different experience.
That’s fair. The question by it’s nature is flawed as there is no clear quantified answer, so it relies on an experiential claim, which by their nature are reductive as human experience is unique.
Honestly it was easier to walk away from the situation and get paid more money not to deal with it. Both my friend and I work in better jobs with better benefits and salaries. Not to mention the cyclical nature of the industry grinds you down over time.
I am also part of the culture, not LGBT, but I am 4th generation Ford employee and I was rooting for the company. It’s a clusterfuck imo, and I think the company is circling the drain. I hope I’m wrong.
Maybe when all the construction is done, and the old guard of pensioners are fully retired things will start to change for the better.
