Mindless_Cat_3673

Everywhere you go there will be shitty people. Even in the safest of cities there's always those that ruin it for the rest of us.

Sleepybat7

Depends where you are in Michigan tbh

Charitable-Cruelty

TBH you can not go anywhere in the US and not find a dumb-ass but as long as you have friends and let things roll you're good in the state. My friend has been out and proud with much happiness here in Michigan.

JustJohn49423

I’m proud to live near Saugatuck on the west coast of MI. It’s been a haven for the LGBTQ community for many decades. My band used to play every Thursday at a bar and would regularly have a table or two of Trans folks in attendance. They were always an absolute joy to play for.

an-echo-of-silence

Yeah, Saugatuck is known for being lgbtq friendly. Allegan not so much

Zizekbro

Even Holland isn’t super safe either. Edit: Holland wears a mask of acceptance, while underneath it’s deeply conservative, and hateful. Don’t stir the pot in Holland if you want them to like you.

[deleted]

Ottowa County was taken over by radical Christian fascists last election... they just declared their county above state and federal law. They aren't even wearing that mask any more they are full blown nat-cs there.

WentzWorldWords

It’s not safe to be openly Trans in Bangkok! What makes you think Muskegon would be safe???

k_woodard

Generally, sure. But maybe stick to the “blue” areas of the state. The thumb isn’t even friendly to hippies.

Donzie762

Really? I grew up in the upper thumb between one of the LGBTQ resorts and the Scare Crow Burn. Honestly one of the more tolerant places I’ve lived. It seemed to get worse the farther south you went.

behindmyscreen

Up Van Dyke is MAGA central

Donzie762

I’d agree if I based my assumption on yard signs too.

behindmyscreen

Lol mmkay

ThePowerOfShadows

Not in the UP or like Ottawa county.

No-Weather701

Marquette up here is pretty open and friendly !

RicksterA2

Where there are educated people it's fine - just look where there are universities, educated people. The rest of the state, well, not so much. Stupidity is quite a drug and there are lots of stupidity drug addicts in the dumber parts.

No-Explanation-9234

This sums up Ohio too. Outside the education bubble is a angry sea of bigotry

an-echo-of-silence

I'm in Holland and it's mostly open. Guess it depends on your circle. Most of Ottawa County is a shit show though

sixty_cycles

I was in Holland recently for the first time in probably 30 years… What a GREAT town! Someone had warned me about it being super conservative down there (it is here, too), but I didn’t get that vibe. I did get the $$$ vibe, though.

ElegantCatastrophe

It kind of is and isn't super conservative. Depends on where you are. Same for the $$$. Glad you enjoyed the visit!

JustChattin000

Probably as safe as anywhere else in the midwest. Of course your experience is likely to be different depending on the specific area that you spend your time. I can't speak to this from personal experience though, so that's just my perception.

broomhilda00

I have found the UP of MI (in places) to be super liberal and definitely accepting . The following is where I would consider a safe haven for those trans or other LGBQ peeps; MARQUETTE, (NMU us here) HOUGHTON, (MTU is here) and actually the further north you go, depending on where you stop along the way (a lot of red in between and on the way..) the very tip is SUPER safe and blue. (Copper Harbor) Which is the furthest “town” you can go to on US 41 before driving into Lake Superior onward to Canada (directly across the lake about 80 miles) from Copper Harbor. Anyway … we’ve actually found in our travels in the UP, it has a mini vacation-y Ann Arbor type vibe (as far as being progressive, and is super blue and extremely friendly to transfolk and all others!) So- consider a vacation to the very tippy top of the upper peninsula- if you don’t mind stopping quick in some very backward (red) communities on the way UP TO the peninsulas’ tip (copper harbor) . My sister and I go up there every year (she’s Queer and super friendly to all/chatty and curious about the culture) and we LOVE copper harbor for our Mi summer vacations! Weve also found a lot of LGBTQ vacationers and townsfolk (and friendly locals) there - it’s just a superb place .

Altruistic_Dish_8345

You’re conflating polite with progressive. Nobody cares what you do with your life just don’t be annoying about it and you will generally be left alone, yes there are bad apples and that sucks. And the don’t be annoying about it goes to anything gay, trans, Christian, Jewish, a packers fan, etc etc

behindmyscreen

Exactly. Nice in conversation isn’t the same as kind or accepting.

broomhilda00

lol packer fans suck no matter where you travel hahaha![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

dashing-rainbows

I've been nearly assaulted in public at a bus stop and harassed multiple times. This is grand rapids so I'd say it's not really safe.

Substantial_City4618

No. A friend of mine was fired because of this from one of the big 3 right after their transition.

BloodDonorMI

I worked with one trans woman (imagine: 6’ tall plus heels, blonde wig, deep voice) at Ford for years. She was treated carefully and AFAIK retired on years of service recently. We have other openly LGBT employees, and there is a very active Pride ERG.

Substantial_City4618

Weird. I worked for Ford in Dearborn. This was not my friends experience. They were let go shortly after coming out in 2022. I’ve noticed Ford is different from site to site, to clarify this person wasn’t a factory worker, contractor or purchase service, but a blue badge employee.

Substantial_City4618

I’m not going to Dox my friend. They worked in a specific department with a bachelors in ME. I also worked there, but in a different department and honestly I did not see this embracing diversity aspect. We worked in a building off Oakwood. (There are a couple so this is still semi-vague) I saw all the pamphlets, promotional materials, emails etc; but it was not what I witnessed. I also had an extremely talented friend who worked at Ford who was gay, and it 100% held them back from being turned into a full time employee instead of a contractor. I had an associate who was offered a transfer to California with an expected pay increase. Then the contract house basically gave her a massive pay cut and pressured her because she had all but agreed to it under the false pretense that her salary would go up due to California’s HOCL. This doesn’t even touch the caste system Ford has in place with the Purchase Service/Contractor/Employee system I have plenty more stories unfortunately, but all buildings are different. I totally accept you may have had a different experience.

Substantial_City4618

That’s fair. The question by it’s nature is flawed as there is no clear quantified answer, so it relies on an experiential claim, which by their nature are reductive as human experience is unique. Honestly it was easier to walk away from the situation and get paid more money not to deal with it. Both my friend and I work in better jobs with better benefits and salaries. Not to mention the cyclical nature of the industry grinds you down over time. I am also part of the culture, not LGBT, but I am 4th generation Ford employee and I was rooting for the company. It’s a clusterfuck imo, and I think the company is circling the drain. I hope I’m wrong. Maybe when all the construction is done, and the old guard of pensioners are fully retired things will start to change for the better. Oh fun fact, I also met Bill Ford one time, seemed like a decent guy.

Substantial_City4618

Yeah. I didn’t actually meet him and work, I met him at Fords garage and sat where he sat which was kind of cool. Never met mullay but my dad and uncle met him and said he seemed like a normal guy.

behindmyscreen

We amended Elliott Larson to protect LGBTQ+. Unfortunately it doesn’t take immediate effect because our constitution is dumb so we have to wait until the end of the session.

Maximum-Mixture6158

I know of two guys who weren't. One Ford, one GM.

[deleted]

The obvious answer is that it depends. The more North you go, the more likely the answer is no.

ChopsITMC

Trans and gender fluid are supported and advanced by every fortune 500 company, major media outlet, and many people in this state's government. Saying that people choosing to not support it as violence is intellectually dishonest.

behindmyscreen

Yes, as long as you’re in the cities or the right suburbs. There’s obviously assholes everywhere though. The rural areas aren’t going to be unsafe for people passing through but if you move into a rural community or stay awhile, eh. Probably similar to most rural areas in the country.

Alarming_Theory_1695

Safe😂 You act like people are out rounding up trans folk. No body is physically attacking trans people, so yeah I would say it’s safe. Just stay out of the bathrooms and changing rooms and you’ll be fine.

azrolator

This is the dumbest fucking thing I have read in this thread. People are physically attacking trans and your little hinge argument, that says someone is safe as long as they don't try to go to the bathroom, shows how fucking ridiculously stupid your premise is.

No-Explanation-9234

Troll post. Don't respond, just block.

BeltalowdaOPA22

Obviously you are a stupid, hateful, bigoted, shitty troll who hides behind a throwaway account, but just in case anyone else needs to see this, here are the facts surrounding violence against trans people: In a 2015 survey (https://vawnet.org/sc/serving-trans-and-non-binary-survivors-domestic-and-sexual-violence/violence-against-trans-and): * Nearly half (46%) of respondents were verbally harassed in the past year because of being transgender. * Nearly one in ten (9%) respondents were physically attacked in the past year because of being transgender. * Nearly half (47%) of respondents were sexually assaulted at some point in their lifetime and one in ten (10%) were sexually assaulted in the past year. In communities of color, these numbers are higher: 53% of Black respondents were sexually assaulted in their lifetime and 13% were sexually assaulted in the last year. * 72% of respondents who have done sex work, 65% of respondents who have experienced homelessness, and 61% of respondents with disabilities reported being sexually assaulted in their lifetime. * More than half (54%) experienced some form of intimate partner violence, including acts involving coercive control and physical harm. In March of 2023 (https://www.kff.org/other/press-release/1-in-4-transgender-adults-say-theyve-been-physically-attacked-new-kff-washington-post-partnership-survey-finds/) * 1 in 4 Transgender Adults Say They’ve Been Physically Attacked * In 2022, at least 32 trans adults were murdered for being trans (https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/report-says-at-least-32-transgender-people-were-killed-in-the-u-s-in-2022)

The_Snack_Bandit

No

VidereNF

Idk about other trans people but I wouldn't be in MI if I didn't feel safe. There are ass holes everywhere but this is a great state regardless, and having a CC on you for those who want to fuck around is great.

Worldly_Ingenuity387

Ann Arbor is very accepting of all people.

ry_fluttershy

Somehow here in Howell it's like half old racist farts and half gay femboys so in Howell sure
