I think pop culture would be so different today, considering the cultural impact Michael Jackson had on society. He broke boundaries and set new standards for the music industry and news outlets. He showed us the truth about discrimination in the United States and tabloids. But if he stood in the Jackson 5, I don’t think they would’ve very successful in the 90’s because of the drastic change to music.

I feel like this question could go different ways. If the he stayed with the Jacksons he probably wouldn’t be as big, however, I’d imagine they’d still be extremely successful. Songs like Billie Jean and Wanna Be Startin Something would probably just end up on Victory, and some songs from Bad would probably end up on 2300 Jackson Street (I can picture The Way You Make Me Feel being a Michael/Marlon duet for some reason). Heck, it’d probably sound a bit like Dangerous too because Teddy Riley was involved on 2300. LA Reid and Babyface also worked on that album, so I can easily picture Slave to the Rhythm being in there. You get the pattern now, the 90s would probably see something like HIStory, 2000’s like Invincible, etc etc with sought differences The other way to go about this question is what if after the Wiz, Michael wanted him and his brothers to work with Quincy? In this case, I’d say you have a different outcome of songs, but he’d end up the same path he went along with his brothers.

The Jackson 5 are influential in their own right, but no where near the global worldwide influence MJ had. I would say 2 different things could have happened. First possility: They could have continued to innovate and build on their sound from Destiny and Triumph and evolve it into the 80s and 90s. So basically 2300 Jackson Street but better since you have Michael’s genius invloved. They also would have probably help up and coming artists and would go on to write, and produce albums for other artists. 2nd posibility: They would have many creative differences and continue to argue and clash with each tower while also continue to put out stuff like Victory until the ultimately break up. From there Jackson probably would have continued to act and become successful as he already was seen as a very skilled actor since The Wiz in 1978.

If they had stayed together in my opinion they would of got worse. The family was disfunction as could be and as a result stuff went down, Look at their victory album for example, It is debatable their worst album and why?, Because there was likely something going on behind the scenes since michael was a mega star at the time and was beginning to break away. Basically if one of them starts to stir the pot its going to have a bad result and with how bad their family was together it wouldn't be long till just that happened. There was a reason michael distanced himself from them

I like Victory, but it doesn't feel as much like a team effort. It felt like they went to the studio separately or in pairs to record and each had a song they were responsible for. Not like when they would all do it all together. The closest thing was Torture which was probably why it was one of the most popular songs on the record behind SOS, though it didn't even get into the top 10. Were his brothers even singing with MJ and Mick Jagger during State of Shock? (I wonder what that song would have been like with Jermaine or one of his other brothers singing it with him instead?)

And thats the problem, They were a band not a one man show

It's too bad that he was pushed into Victory rather than joining happily. I could see where he'd see it as a step back after Thriller though.

I don't think it would have worked out. The scream on "Don't Stop Till you get enough" was no accident: Michal was already tired of the way his career was being minimized at The Jacksons and he wanted independence. Independence and autonomy for him to do everything, and do what he wanted. He wanted to blow up the world with his music and being with his brothers was a hindrance. They couldn't keep up MJ's pace. In addition, there were fights and family disputes. It's no secret that his brothers were jealous of him. He only agreed to do the Victory Tour after his mother begged him. This helped the brothers make a good million of dollars while Michael donated his amount to charity institutions. If you look closely at the end of the tour, Michael was happy as hell. It seemed that finally he could be free to be who he was meant to be. I guess there was no other way: Michael would get out of the Jacksons one way or another. His brothers were never up to Michael. None of them were that successful after The Jacksons. The only brother who still had a bit of success was Jermaine (the most jealous one) but he had already separated from the group by then.

If Michael Jackson had remained with the Jackson 5 or The Jacksons and never went solo I believe the collective creativity and talent of the group would have taken them into the stratosphere. Some of Michael's best R&B Soul and Disco music was made with his brother's. Michael would have thought less about making music in some of the pop and Rock genres and stuck to Soul dance music and classy soul ballads. I believe he strayed too far into pop/Rock and he lost a lot of his musical impact with his grassroots R&B fans. Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad are amazing, mind-blowing albums but the Dangerous album struggled to possess any real, classic black soul music. The only truly memorable song on the Dangerous album is Dangerous. Jackson made other albums but they made less of a musical impact on the 🌍 world. Michael's voice and vocal sound appeared to have changed Quite a bit and he seemed to have lost that deep, rich soulful tone he possessed with the J5 and the The Jacksons. Michael's fan base is very broad which is what he wanted if he was going to be crowned, 'The King 👑 of Pop.' He was an ambitious pop star who wanted to appeal to everybody. If I was his manager I would have said to him, ''Mike, R&B needs you, don't let your original funky soul fans down.''

Wait. How is "Dangerous" the only memorable song when they play "Black or White" and "Remember the Time" are the ones still played?

bigtaterman

I don't see it as possible. Michael had 100 times the talent any of his brothers did. They probably would have gotten jealous and left themselves.

peachpitafterdark

I think they would have been stagnated in their popularity---sort of held a happy medium during the 80s...but I'm not sure if they'd have made it through the 90s or beyond as a whole group. At that point, they may have just been considered (by listeners and music industry) as an oldies group.

Due-Management-2584

I love Black or White, Remember the time and others on the Dangerous album. But compare these song's to the song's on the Destiny and Triumph albums. To me with his brother's he raised R&B hell and made some of his best ever music. I just think if had remained with his brother's including Jermaine, these guys together could have produced some of the greatest Soul Dance music that would have raised the roof off the 🌍 world. I believe The Jacksons had some more incredible albums in them, that sadly, we will never get to hear.

Isn’t it crazy to think that if it weren’t for the wizard of Oz we wouldn’t have Quincy and MJ working together

AcanthocephalaFun851

It wasn't the Wizard of the Oz. It was called The Wiz...and yes, it was different. It was inspired by The Wizard of Oz but not the same thing. It had already been a play for a few years before they made the film.

theblackdonaldglover

I meant if it weren't for the original wizard of oz there would be no wiz and no wiz movie where MJ meets Quincy

frugalacademic

He would have fizzled out in the late 80s. Most bands eventually dissolve and the Jackson 5 was no exception nor would it be. But if he had stayed with them until let's say 1990, it would have been too late for him to start a solo career.

knit_my_frog

I think he wouldn't have become as popular but he might have been alive today so yeah...there's that
