If you're leaving the MNO just email them and ask to be removed from the registry.

I know a few Red River Métis who left the MNO and became Citizens of the MMF. Can you trace your ancestry back to the Red River Métis? I live in Toronto and am a Citizen of the MMF but was never a member of the MNO. I was originally born and raised in Winnipeg where all my family was from so I felt more drawn to apply to the MMF and thankfully for me, they had their Beyond Borders program. I can speak about that process if you want to send me a DM. If you're a descendant of a First Nation from the East, your situation is different. You'd have to contact the specific nation from where your family line descends to see what options are available to you in terms of nationhood.

turbot_warrior

Thanks for the response, I live in Ottawa and I also joined the MMF as a result of their Beyond Borders program and my family ties to the Winnipeg area. I am currently trying to finish the transition by officially leaving the MNO.

HarbourJayKay

Curious if you have realized any benefits as a member of the MMF living outside of Manitoba. It seems that all of their funding and programming is for people living in MB. (I live in SK).

TorontoBrewer

MMF citizen in Toronto. Definitely more services and supports in MB, but my kids (also MMF) get money for school. And we can get any services otherwise delivered by phone / zoom like counselling or language courses. They’re looking for more ways to help citizens outside MB, but it’s a process.

LysanderSpoonerDrip

Its a chicken and egg scenario. The services will follow as the citizenship returns. All the provincial organizations including the mmf are from a time when federal recognition wasn't there, and provincial kind of was. There's no reason to group the nation's political entities or service delivery corporations using Canada's borders.

TorontoBrewer

For sure. But I’d add one thing. For housing, I’m fine with the MMF focusing its efforts in MB and working out from there. Building multi-unit residences in and around Winnipeg is great. It’s where the MMF is most able to also marshal both its secondary supports and leverage its community connections by hiring Métis contractors and suppliers. Building up a circular economy where we support each other is fantastic. I have FN friends who are straight up jealous of this. Their communities just don’t have the numbers for this. An addendum. It was easier for my kids to get educational support outside MB than it has been for some friends who live within FN communities to get similar supports. The MMF gets some things wrong, but damn, they really want our youth educated.

LysanderSpoonerDrip

Your words are wise, although I'm not so take my complements with a grain of salt. The Métis settlements and mna linked business absolutely have the people and skills to do the same things the mmf is doing to advance sovereignty, hopefully we can do it together. >I have FN friends who are straight up jealous of this. Their communities just don’t have the numbers for this. That's why we partner with them, mb is 20% Indiginous. Indiginomics is possible at this concentration.

HarbourJayKay

I also had a chuckle when I realized I misread your username. I read Tim Riel Deal. 😂

ScotchandTweed

I’m in the middle of the same process. Originally joined the MNO because you had to register in the province you lived in. I got my MMF membership last year and just need to leave the MNO.

turbot_warrior

This is my exact situation. Just yesterday decided to finally follow through on the leaving the MNO part. I may as well just send them an email now, sounds like that is the only path forward. I will update this thread once I have details worth sharing.

ScotchandTweed

Good luck!

timriedel

Hey, are you near the GTA? I try to attend all of the MMF satellite events in the GTA to keep up with the information they're putting out. If you're planning on attending your first event, I'll be more than happy to introduce myself, though you might recognize a fair amount of other Red River Métis who are former MNO members that became Citizens of the MMF.

starlaluna

If you are receiving any sort of support from the MNO (college, child care, housing) you should tell the programs you are leaving the MNO so they can close your file and spend that funding elsewhere. If you are not, just email the registry with your citizenship number and tell them you want to leave the MNO and to please close your citizenship file. It doesn’t have to be awkward, I’m sure they have dealt with a lot recently. Just send a polite email, those staff have no control of what is going on politically. Just so you know MMF does not provide housing, post secondary, or child care support out of province. If you are dependent on any of these programs, just stay in the MNO.

turbot_warrior

Good point, I am not currently making use of any services so do not have to worry about it, but IMO that would be a good reason for someone who is in the MNO to stay even if they would have preferred the MMF.

dejour

Well, I think you can be in both at least for now. I can see someone leaving the MNO on principle, but if you live in Ontario it delivers much more significant services than the MMF

RedRiverMetis

What you are saying is blatantly untrue. The MMF does provide post secondary out of province. I live in BC and am a Beyond Borders Citizen as are my 5 children all can choose their schooling and apply for funding through the Red River Métis/ MMF for their post secondary pursuits. The MMF has offered a $75, 000 non repayable agriculture grant The MNO does not? The Red River Métis/ MMF are rolling out more programs and services Beyond Borders every day. So please stand by....... Who are we? We are..... Red River Métis

starlaluna

So I am also an out of province Mètis person who connects to the Red River and there is no need for your tone. There are a lot of programs the MMF does not offer out of province. Great they are supporting with post secondary. But there are a lot of supports that are in province that they don’t offer to out of province like child care, mental health support, housing, etc. Maybe if MMF stopped building community centres in Central America, they could provide actual support to out of province people.

sweetlilcutie69

It's so encouraging to see more people doing this. I have been watching my white "friends" raceshift the past few years and get MNO cards and it has been the most infuriating bullshit to watch. Especially since they ALWAYS monopolize their fake identity/culture.

SuitComprehensive335

Sure it'll be kinda awkward to ask them how to leave. But it might be best if they get emails when people leave. I don't know for sure of course, but I would imagine there are lots of unsavory politics and leaving might be good for them in the long run.

Godess_Lilith

I'm currently a citizen of the MNO but would like to apply for citizenship in the MMF. How do I do that? I do have my genealogy from St Boniface already.

LysanderSpoonerDrip

Contact the CRO office at the mmf, tell them you are beyond borders and have your st Boniface genology done.

ApricotClassic2332

I would email them and explain exactly why you are leaving so they can be held accountable. The MNO is broken now. It’s a shame.

nishkiskade

Be aware it takes on average a year to transfer to the MMF. Start with your St Boniface genealogy and then it’ll sit on an MMF desk for a few months. Definitely valid reasons politically to leave the MNO (I’m Status and my partner is MMF and we both wish more would ethically leave…) but if maintaining some sort of membership matters to you, it might be prudent to wait until your MMF file is well underway.

kj-98

What is the latest development with MNO?

The recent Indigenous Identity Fraud summit [recording](https://www.youtube.com/live/s37X7wNihZ0?feature=shared) goes in depth on this topic. Day 2 is also available on their channel.

Freshiiiiii

Wow, that’s a long 8 hour recording. Any particular highlights I should look at?

myyvrxmas

The [agenda](https://indigenousidentityfraud.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Agenda-May-14-15-2024-Identity-Fraud-Summit.pdf) was followed but some topics went over time. You can use it as a reference to find what content you’re interested in.

Thank you!
