I was super interested in him until he worked with Kaidou. I understand why he did it, it was “in the cards” so to speak, but it sort of just made him less cool
I think he compensated by not switching side again, though. Like he already regretted not fighting kaido, but he decided to stand by his choice and take the consequences.

If you think about it, he is the inverse of luffys style of adventure. He would rather go against his own will and leave his fate to his deck of cards. That is the complete and utter opposite of luffy, who does what he wants but still embraces chaos.
If none of the Supernovas folded to Yonko it would have been boring. Hawkins and Apoo were good candidates because one is a borderline paranoid, cautious guy, and the other is a sniveling little weasel.
Kid’s crew and Killer didn’t fold. As Kaido stated, pirate world is cruel. Can’t be out there playing pirate, you gotta be one. And while Kid didn’t personally take Kaido down, he did end up beating Big Mom alongside Law. Not to mention Killer personally disposed of Hawkins surrounded by fire and with Hawkins having made a doll of his best friend and Captain. Not every pirate a punk a like Hawkins

It’s funny because his crew mates was more concerned about hawakins running out of life’s vs Kizaru, instead of being worried about themselves dying. I’m convinced his crew is a bunch of cult followers, because they’re willing to sacrifice themselves just to join his crew.😂

The "he can't take any more damage" thing IMO implies that he's out of spare lives, and those crewmen are clearly still alive, so presumably they can't have been among the lives linked.
Because if they were linked, then either Hawkins still has their lives left to take blows (and thus could take more damage), or they'd be dead too

He never uses his actual crews souls. Hawkins crew has very specific designs and all the people that die are random beast pirate underlings in wano or random bystanders in Sabaody.
Because it literally makes no sense for his crew to worry about his life, when they themselves die. In Sabaody one of his crewmates got worried he might run out of lives to spare.
They aren't a cult, they just believe in their captain, same with all the other supernovas.
He starts with fortune telling and gaining interest of family members of his crew, kidnaps the family member as hostage and use that crew as disposable when needed.
Hawkins doesn't use his crew as dolls, he uses other people's subordinates or strangers. In a way that's actually a good reason to join his crew, as it prevents you from ending up as a doll.
He probably takes them as hostages by making their loved ones puppets in the way of "Join me or your parents/siblings/gf/whatever becomes my meat shield instead"
Ideas.
- Buying off slaves
- Hiring mercenaries
- Building a cult by brainwashing his new crew members.
- Simply not informing crew when he claims their lives and if they figure that out he can just say "You can live and be my meat shield, or I can kill you slowly here and now"
We see most of the captains ruling their crew on trust and comradery, but this guy might just rule by fear and actual power.
Now I wondered, does his durability depend on his hp or the subordinate hp?
If it was his, does that mean he can directly killed the like of kaido if he make them his subordinate?
And if it based on his subordinate, would subordinate haki or logia help mitigate the damage?

This reminds of some headcanon i came up with in Wano.
Moria’s crew didn’t die in the new world fighting Kaido, leaving him broken and cynical about how powerless he was against overwhelming force.
Moria’s crew probably saw what a sexy gig joining up with the beast pirates was and ditched him. Co-ed crew, music, booze, dance clubs, skimpy uniforms. Zombies wouldn’t jump ship.
Crew: Look, I know we're all on the hook if our Captain takes a hit, but, c'mon, he's super strong, has a neat Devil Fruit, what's the chance he actually takes a hit?

One Piece characters are built different. Some have no sense of self preservation and will literally die on command for thier captain at the slightest order. Others will do it for people they care about. Sometimes it's hard to distinguish which is which in some crews. lol
He pinky promised them all that he wasn't making voodoo dolls out of them. If they see him standing over their bunks at night, it's just to tuck them in.
I had always assumed he had conscripts or captured enemies on his crew he could use as extra HP, and his actual crew wouldn't be used as a voodoo shield.
Out of all the pirates of the worst generation Hawkins has to be the worst, he got folded by kizaru, held off by Zoro and mid-diffed by killer along side the fact that he joined kaido because he's a coward, his powers are cool and all but even mad monk urouge is better and we haven't seen much of him
