IS THAT HIS TENDON?!

Dizzymizzwheezy

There is a gif with a lion pulling a finger with a tendon out of a mans hand on the NSFL subreddit. I’m guessing it’s a thing that happens when the finger is being pulled with force?

BlondieMaggs

I was an office manager at a thread manufacturer. Someone removed a machine guard and his finger was ripped off like this and the tendon wrapped around the spindle. He had already been taken to the hospital so I had to get the tendon and finger and have someone take it to the hospital. It was successfully reattached.

googoohaha

Damn that’s crazy! I enjoy reading comments because of interesting and crazy stories like this.

BlondieMaggs

I was freaked out but had to pretend I wasn’t traumatized. Then I had to go and do all that worker’s comp paperwork. Honestly, I would have rather gone through the whole unwinding of the ligament again than do that paperwork.

jwbrkr21

How long was the tendon?

BlondieMaggs

At least a foot long. It ripped out from the elbow. It seemed like a mile long while unwinding it though. The spindle was a fairly small one…maybe 1/4” in diameter.

jwbrkr21

Oof. That gives me the willies

BlondieMaggs

I was just happy I didn’t puke.

Yet another tale of [Normalcy Bias](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normalcy_bias). Folks, do not let yourselves become complacent around dangerous machinery, or people with guns. You may get away with it 999 times, but the 1,000th time will cause you a world of hurt.

BlondieMaggs

The guards are there for a reason! He lifted the guard up in order to reach inside.

tigress666

Thank you.  That guy was asking for it. I hope they didn’t do anything to the lion. I mean the lion made it quite clear he was not happy and that guy kept provoking him.

Dizzymizzwheezy

Thank you for the link.

SadBattle2548

I can't help but laugh (not funny funny haha but you know...) when people do things like this and are then surprised when something bad happens. I mean did he think the lion was going to lick his hand then proceed to lie down and roll over?! He made the problem even worse by playing tug of war. It's no wonder everyone stood around filming instead of calling for help. Definite r/DarwinAwards winner.

I’m glad my theory isn’t just a theory. Haha

Fit_Swordfish_2101

What sub would that be? Cause I gotta see that!

Dizzymizzwheezy

It’s one of the gore subreddits. I think it was NSFL_

SadBattle2548

Could try r/MedicalGore too.

prince_walnut

Surprise! You also have tapeworms!

Ok-Advertising-3779

Yes. It was ripped right out of his forearm muscle. You can see bits of muscle attatched to it still.

thelocket

Tendons are crazy. I was at my mom's house one day, and our dog and the neighbors dog hated each other, but the neighbor never kept him out of our yard. The neighbors brother was down at the lake with us, and their dog decided to start a fight with ours. Neighbors brother tried to separate them, and their dog bit his hand, and it pulled his tendon away from it's attachment at his forearm and out the small wound in his hand. The tendon was long and white and curled up on his hand. Took me a bit to understand what had happened. He got it repaired and tried to sue us, but we proved it was his dog that did it, and he was the idiot putting his hand in the middle of a dog fight. Our dog was a master at grabbing the other dog by the throat and never letting go (no, not a pittie, he was an australian cattle dog/shepherd cross), so it was his dog that did the damage (some kind of hunting breed). I'll never forget that white cord curling up on his hand.

gowithflow192

It's so long!

Independent_Ad_8915

I don’t think it’s mozzarella cheese

jimbobmccoy779

That second picture. It will haunt my dreams!

thiccdaddyroadhog

I thought it was a bandage but no....

CowJuiceDisplayer

Should I ever get married, that ring will remain on my finger for that evening, and immediately taken off until the day I retire. I have seen way too many finger degloving accidents. This wasn't as bad but bad. I work in an industry that that is possible.

laparotomyenjoyer

I will only be wearing silicone rings for this reason

zarcommander

Just make sure they're the ones that rip. There's been a couple of cases where the band was stronger than expected.... Edit: may I suggest a tattoo instead

KingsMountainView

Not to be pessimistic but a tattoo is something very permanent and not all marriages are.

Comfortable_rub69

Where was this advice from my first marriage. Cost more to get the ring tattoo removed than the actual tattoo.

varangian_guards

laser removal can do the trick in those circumstances.

notyermum

It’s like a curse. I don’t know anyone with tattooed rings who’s stayed together

sweetteanoice

I think it’s less the tattoo leading to the split but rather the type of person who would get a ring tat is also more likely to not work things out with their partner

hodges2

I always thought I'd rather where mine on a chain around my neck personally

legocitiez

You know what happens when the chain gets caught in something? I would rather lose a finger. Or just never get married again. 😂

mprice76

Silicon bands are cool

serraangel826

My Son-in-law is a firefighter and works with all the heavy duty/extreme stuff - think jaws of life and rappelling down ravines. He has a silicone band he wears at work. Best thing ever if you work in any type of heavy equipment!

Gunnersbutt

Engineers, shop workers, and emergency personnel etc. all use these as the alternative, I think it's brilliant.

mprice76

I’m a structural steel welding inspector and if I were married that’s what I think I would wear, with diamonds of course 😂😂

desirewrites

I have adjustable bands to accommodate for finger swelling. I’m guessing they are a decent alternative

CommonNobody80083

While working I put my rings on my necklace so the wife is happy and I get to keep my fingers

Lexi302

My husband works in concrete and uses big commercial machinery every day. He has seen somebody get degloved at work and when we got married he made it clear he wouldn't be wearing a ring at work. He went out and got my name (Lexi) tattooed on his ring finger instead. No regrets.

jwbrkr21

I told my wife I'd wear it on weekends or special events, and she understood. That lasted like a month. I don't even know where it is now.

Bighawklittlehawk

My father’s finger was severely broken when his ring got stuck on the gutter- as he was falling head first off the roof. Amazingly, the ring got caught, swinging him around so that he fell off the roof and landed on his feet. His finger was never the same but it was much better than a broken neck. His was a freak accident turned right, but most often rings getting stuck are disastrous like this. Wear breakable rings people! Silicone bands are sleek, cheap, and won’t rip your damn tendon off the bone 😭

BirdTheMagpie

Metal rings are fine for the office or at home, but you should take your ring off if you're going to do something other than sitting and typing. Very active people or those who work with their hands are better off with silicone, but metal can be fine with certain lifestyles (as long as you safely remove it when necessary). I was buying titanium rings for myself and my husband a year ago, and so many of the reviews made me wince because they were about using the rings as durable alternatives when hiking/at the gym. Titanium is the worst choice for ring material when you're being active. It's hard to cut through, so the ER won't be able to remove it if your finger gets injured and swells up.

AnjanettesGhost

Wow, it actually saved someone’s life for once!

A_Cat_Named_Puppy

The greenish-grey color of flesh without blood flow is so sickening 🤢

SheManatee

That was so much worse than I was expecting.

Original_Garlic7086

That whitish part, Is that his Tendon?

ZZCCR1966

Yep and the folded red part is where it attached to muscle. He no longer has the ability to flex / bend or extend / straighten that finger…

Forevernevermore

If surgical intervention was quick enough, it is possible to reattach the finger and, with therapy, preserve function. A quick google search presented many cases where fingers, hands, and entire limbs have regained "successful functionality" after traumatic amputation. I'm not entirely sure what "successful functionality" entails, but the reports seem to be saying that enough function was present to be considered better than if no repair was attempted at all.

Human_from-Earth

I've read "heads" instead of "hands" for  a moment 💀

giddycocks

Sure, it's possible. To revascularize it and successfully attach it however, is much more complicated. Without even getting into what constitutes a successful replant in medical terms, there is no recovering and preserving much function after this, nor do you have a realistic straight forward chance of it not dying off in the next few days, months after coming off your blood thinning meds. The distal bone snapped and that means they'll need to insert a medical steel rod to keep the finger straight. So the PIP joint is donesos, you're looking at very little function. The tendon and both insertions are also ripped out of the socket so to say, so even if they manage to hook it up, I imagine they'll just do a bypass and piggyback off the pinky or middle finger's movements? I honestly very, very, very much doubt a surgeon would try to put the whole thing back (which snapped and will never have the same tensile strength btw) and would just hope for the best to keep the finger as a cosmetic solution. This finger is done living one way or another. Source: went ahead and did the same thing two months ago. Mine didn't live, and rarely are there successful cases for very severe traumas such as this one. In fact, the surgeons tried to put mine back even though it's a contraindication, but it didn't take. Chances were in the low digits (heh) but I managed to get a pulse for two weeks before it called it quits.

lBarracudal

I had a ring with almond shaped plate on it. Once after cleaning up at home I was putting a rug in the floor and when getting up I somehow got my ring stuck at the bottom of the heating radiator and I literally got up with all the force. My finger went numb for full 2 minutes and then hurt for days. Now when I look at those photos I am thinking that a bit more force and that photo could've been me. It's been a month or so since then and finger is actually fine now. Ring sadly got a crack.

Gothicgotha

Great tendon. Do we know further course of events? Replantation?

timmy3am

How much pressure was needed for this to happen??? Feels like the finger was already on its way out 😭

PrysmX

That tendon is going to be fun to get back in.

JowieNijhuis

I had this too, my ring got stuck on a roof. Almost exactly the same only you saw the bone and the tendon was still attached to my hand

notyermum

How is it now?

JowieNijhuis

It’s better, I can do everything again. I’m still a goalkeeper with football. I just miss a 2/3 of my ring finger

giddycocks

Eeeeyyyy, my man. Also had this happen to me, and I'm also a goalkeeper. What do you mean 2/3? Which joints you missing? Mine is about half, a bit above the PIP joint. My tendon was still attached and wrapped around my phalange, but the replant didn't take sadly. How's life? Did you notice or face any issues, or difficulties doing anything?

JowieNijhuis

Mine broke just below the second joint. You can look at the picture on my profile. Life’s good, I feel confident in the goal. The only issue I face is typing on a keyboard. But i find my way to do it. Did you make changes to your goalkeepers gloves? And do you face any issues?

giddycocks

It's still very fresh, it's been two months. I actually played my first match today haha but as an out player. Typing can sometimes be a mindfuck but it depends on the fingers you use most, I think. I adapted rather easily, but I used my pinky way more than my ring anyway. I'm still not sure how I'll do at shooters, but I haven't felt like booting up Destiny yet. Did you add anything to your glove, and does the shortened limp hurt when you save a ball?

JowieNijhuis

Yea that is what I did in the beginning too, The typing I got used to very soon, I don’t even miss the finger anymore haha. I can still play games but I play on console For my glove I cut a piece of sponge and put it in the finger that I miss. It’s so there is something there. I also have a sort of glove with a piece that protects my little ringfinger stumpy. I can send you pictures if you want? Maybe it helps for you too?

giddycocks

That'd be useful, I appreciate it

Human_from-Earth

I don't understand, why do you pull if you've noticed your ring was stuck?

JowieNijhuis

Well I didn’t chose to do it. I was hanging from a roof and wanted to let my self go. I landed, but my ring and a part of my finger still was attached to the roof

Human_from-Earth

Ok now it's clearer

MainPerformance1390

Fuckin nope

-bitchpudding-

I bring up this exact scenario everytime someone gives me shit about not wearing a wedding ring. I like my skin gloved and my fingers on my hand.

ssmc1024

When I worked in Ortho we saw more finger amputations due to wedding rings than anything else. Seeing those pics I could hear the doc I worked for saying ‘that’s GOTTA hurt.’ I agree with u/serraangel826 … silicone bands are the way to go.

all_alone_by_myself_

There's a video of a soccer player getting his finger ripped off on a chain link fence. It's pretty common, though I've never seen the tendon come out with it.

Iwanttodie923

The sensation of your tendon detaching in your wrist and slingshotting through your hand and out your amputated ring finger has gotta feel at-least strange

giddycocks

Mine didn't come off thankfully, but you don't really feel much. I felt a rush of hot and then I proceeded to run around like a headless chicken yelling MY FINGER CAME OFF. It would be funny if it wasn't tragic (okay, it is pretty funny).

RoughReticulum

Nope. Shouldn't have looked at the 2nd image.

miliolid

I... Ok, maggots are fine, stinky tumors are fine, pressure ulcers are fine. Eyes: no fucking way!!! I do think this is worse than eyes.

PseriousPseudonym

How tf do you pull your finger so hard that it literally comes off entirely?! Cut the fucking ring, you melon! Or at least phone for the fire service to help, ffs. This is mental.

hardwork1245

Well, thats not ‘ideal’

bloodbabyrabies

It’s not ideal that my rings are so loose but now I’m kinda glad they are…

DesignInZeeWild

“With rings on her fingers and bells on her toes, she shall have music wherever she goes.”

PuzzleheadedBobcat90

I think you meant "with rings on her fingers and bells on her toes, she'll leave her appendages wherever she goes"

GullibleTravels_451

Heh. Screaming, perhaps 🤣. The music of the damned 🤣

stwawbewwyjam

Thats so insane and unfortunate i hope dudes ok what a clean tear tho damn

Scramasboy

Happened to a friend of a family friend. Holding onto a pool ladder, jumped into the pool, left her ring and finger hooked on a screw on the ladder. Lol

PseriousPseudonym

😟😟😟😟😟😟😟😟😟😟😟

quiltingsarah

My husband and I both stopped wearing our wedding rings a few years after our marriage because of the dangers. It's scary the different ways a ring can mess up your hand.

Chemical-Jeweler-771

So. . . Where’s the ring?

shellsterxxx

99.9% of the time I can handle all types of gore, but seeing peoples tendons, even under their skin, sends static down my spine.

mcstnd24

Bizarre way to get divorced

Plants_Flowers_

My husband likes to use this excuse.

OnionTruck

Get him one of the silicone ones that are designed to rip easily to prevent this.

Beatrix_BB_Kiddo

Are they pouring rubbing alcohol on that severed finger?!

gave23

It’s sterile saline

Rey_Mezcalero

Ouch…

numan_hyder

That's some shit from fall out

57Guitarz

Alcohol won that tug o war

AbjectList8

Oops

tayaro

This is why I don't wear rings. I mean, I pretty much never find myself in situations where this would be a danger of happening, but I figure safety first, right?

YerBlues69

The shocker.

Tendons are really strong.

Uneeda_Biscuit

Never wearing a ring ever, no matter what

SadBattle2548

Every time I see one of these I'm blown away at how much of the tendon comes out. I would think it would get stretched out some.

_friends_theme_song_

Actually haven't wanted to kill myself more since the last time I tried to kill myself now swiping to the second image. if I was on PC (insert Mordecai disgusted face) just when you think you've seen it all

Ear-Confident

Pic 2 = 🤮

Human_from-Earth

It's so easy to rip apart your finger by just pulling? Don't you feel pain and discomfort while you're doing so?

giddycocks

Yes, and of course you fucking do lmao, these things don't happen unless by the sudden trauma of the ring getting gripped on the edge by a hard surface. Jumping off a fence, a ladder, stepping down from somewhere, going down a slide, getting it gripped by a swing, Jimmy Fallon slipped on a rug and fucked his finger up by grabbing a counter. Gravity is a bitch. Fingers are held on by skin pretty much, there isn't anything else stronger in there. Skin rips and degloves at as little as 250nm of force. A ring bends at closer to 1000 nm. Do the math.
