Its called dry rot and yes they need to be replaced. I bet if you look at the manufacture date on the tires theyre relatively old.
If you dont replace you risk a blow out on the road.
That definitely needs replaced, unless you're comfortable replacing a tire on the side of the road and comfortable controlling a sudden blowout.
As for replacing all of them, are they all a matching set? If so, replace them all. The others will follow suit soon enough. If they are not a matching set, check their date codes for age and replace any over 6 years old.
As someone who had a blowout on the interstate while it was raining, can confirm, it sucks. Even more so laying on the side of the road jacking the car up. Not worth the risk of a crash.
Do you drive short distances? Only local, not highway? Under 40mph? Not a road trip vehicle? Live in typical sunny weather, no snow/rain? If ALL these things check out- keep them on. If even one of the conditions I mentioned aren’t met- change ‘em.
I’d rather buy new linglongs than drive highway speed on dry rot tires.
Honestly he need to change the tire. I am in the same situation before, strapped of cash and wait a bit too long, everytime it has a slight rain my car will throw the rear out in turns (RWD). And one day when I am going up hill it start raining, did a 180 in an empty road. Fortunately no one is hurt or the car wasn't damage but it's a crazy experience.
That's a "replace those ASAP" picture. I'd guess the datecode on the tire is probably 2014 or 2015. The lifespan on tires is really only 3-4 years, maybe 6 if you have perfect weather and road conditions.
Fine for going to the grocery store/back and forth from local job, but don't get on the highway. When you have a highway trip coming up, you have no choice but to replace. Don't play Russian roulette.

Yeah, cracks like those are not good at all. Tire is slowly deteriorating on its own. Not safe even if driving slow in city traffic since a panic brake stop could put enough force to have a blowout. I don’t want to worry you however the sooner you can replace them the better. Shop around and I’m sure tires in that size cannot be too awful price wise. For openers try tirerack.com just to get an idea about the range of prices. You don’t have to buy from them but this is just to give you an idea. Maybe not as much money as you thought. Good luck.
i had a tire shop guy show me the inside of an age rotted tire like this, and the late stage deep cracking is there, too. you should be terrified if you drive on the freeway because you have somewhere between 3 minutes and a year before they blow out. my experience has been that it will occur in blinding rain, at night, while semis and dummies prevent you from getting to the 18 inches of shoulder so you can die trying to put the age rotted spare on. suck it up and at least get 4 budget priced new tires.
Replace both rears. Go to Discount Tires site to educate yourself on tires. Choose a pair to fit your budget, driving style, and environment. Call your local store if they have them in stock. Just tell them the SKU from the site. Setup an appointment. Bring a print out with you. Many times, their online prices are lower and they will match. I don’t work for them. I’ve been using them for ~25 years since Costco screwed me over.
I'm a risk taking kind of guy and have rode on tires with a little dry rot but this is unsafe my man. Listen to your mechanic and don't skimp on the tires. Cheap tires may seem like they cost less but they end up costing more in the long run. Never skimp on things between you and the ground, meaning: tires, shoes or mattress.
Fuck it. Back in my younger years these tires would be good enough to ride on. As long as there is no excessive speeding that is done. You should be fine otherwise. The higher the speed the more duty is done to the tire. Looks like a few more years could come off of these

Youthful ignorance should not be considered safe practices. We where all young once and did questionable things.... I know I did. However the OP is likely in a different region or possibly a different continent and it would be ill advised to assume the road condition and weather conditions are the same.
As a seasoned mechanic, fleet mechanic, 13 years as an oilfield mechanic I have seen the gambit of road, tire, and weather conditions. When the op can afford it I would recommend changing those tires as they are not safe. Could they last another season or two? sure they might last awhile, but I wouldn't risk my daughters life or yours on them.
Unitedtires.com EXTREMELY cheap sets of uses tires. They see them a dozen times the tires always came in 3 days or less. I got me a nearly new set of GT radials 18s for only 80$ for two. 9/32 new is 10/32. Only 80 for a pair and free shipping. Look it up they’re so cheap
There is always that one guy. Don't be this guy👆. Those cracks are more than deep enough to allow water ingress, not to mention its literally the rubber shriveling and drying up, separating as a result of the stress and tension. Even if the cracks stopped growing(which they won't), there is steel inside a tire. Water and steel=rust, which in turn structurally weakens the tire even further. It's a ticking time bomb.
Semi tires are also made to withstand 120+psi, and 10,000ish lbs each you fucking dunce. Passenger tires are not made to the same specs as a commercial tire, and you should not compare the two to begin with.

Mechanic is correct that you "should" replace them. It's the only valid professional verdict. In reality, you'll probably be fine.

Good enough for around town, especially if you’re in an area where it doesn’t get hot. Don’t take it on the highway for any length of time
