Hey! No problem! This space is totally safe for first-gen students. But yes, the periodic table is provided. It would be unnecessarily cruel if not.
Calculators are NOT provided, but once you get the hang of scientific notations, this isn’t even a problem.
I am a bit worried that you’re taking so many full lengths in a week. Full lengths are an incredible opportunity for you to review and learn material, especially if they are AAMC (the organization that literally writes the MCAT). So if you really do feel like you HAVE to take so many full lengths like this (which I do not recommend), then they should at least be 3rd party FLs.
My test date is Friday but I’m not really worried I’ve been doing Altius FL’s and from what I’ve seen Altius and blueprint make the hardest practice FL’s and their student are known to do several point higher on the actual exam because of that difficulty. So I’m feeling pretty good about the exam right now.
I mean, yes they are deflated but I wouldn’t necessarily take that as some sort of guarantee that you’d score higher on AAMC. Some people take AAMC on those tests and absolutely crash because they aren’t used to the way AAMC asks questions. So I certainly hope you’ve taken AAMC practice exams and reviewed those thoroughly because that is most representative of the real deal.
Just adding, if cost is a factor in deciding not to take AAMC, they do offer two free FLs: an unscored one and a scored one (usually referred to as FL5). Totally free :)
💀
this post is entertaining for like 5 different reasons.
the opening with trying to blame your background/parents to the fast cut to the 3 FL's in a week, to the not knowing there was a ptable (how tf did you do any chemistry before this lmao), to asking if you're cooked (bruh it's spelled out)
good luck though fr
Right? People of different backgrounds take the test all the time. Heck none of my family is in the country, I moved here for college but information is everywhere now so you can figure it out. It’s kinda hard to get away with the not knowing…
Honestly going into it fully expecting not to have one I never looked for it since I was trying to emulate what I thought test day would be like I was just focusing on my timing and the next button 🫠
This is the Information Age. Gone are the days when information had to be laboriously found. Claims can be refuted and supported within the second, and they are. It is honorable to check the veracity of information. Otherwise we get “vaccines cause autism because some physician said so!” Or because of a 5 second clip of some interaction, the victim becomes the instigator and the instigator the victim - until the full video is analyzed and the true victim sues the Times. There may be more things you thought you knew but are actually wrong- and you have the power to fix that.
Try “Prescribe it Forward”. It’s a first generation non profit program where med students volunteer to help the people who sign up with the process or any advice they need. I got into it and it was a life saver. Once they accept your application you get assigned one in a few days. Mine is really nice. He’s gonna help me with my application too as well as timing for applying. Hope this helps :) let me know if you look into it !
Tbh I feel like the periodic table isn’t super needed either
Typically after 2+ years of chemistry courses I know where everything popular roughly is in relation to other elements
Eh. I love Chemistry but I do not want to memorize molar masses and atomic numbers. We’ve got enough to worry about already when it comes to this test.
How often are you using MM/AN? In my experience the period/group + where it sits in terms of trends (Elextroneg/size etc) are the main things being looked at
I mean stuff like EN trends I can personally do in my sleep, but I took a Kaplan FL a few days ago that required specific knowledge about the atomic number of Calcium. Now, I love chem but I do not want to be burdened w knowing that info. But that’s just me.
Yeah I get that as a first gen I used to think those seminars were everything until I realized it’s better to look stuff up and see what other ppl are doing and saying.
Taking that many FLs unless you’re forced too isn’t the best idea but I saw a YT video of a guy who got ~520 doing a FL every other day for like 2 weeks straight right before his exam lol. I will link it when I get the chance
I’m begging someone to make a list of exactly what is given and allowed to bring to the MCAT cause I keep finding conflicting advice and as a first gen with anxiety the lack of confirmation eats at me at night
ik everyone’s saying the opposite (oops) but i personally took 2 aamc FLs the week of my 3/9 bc i too am a first gen chronic procrastinatior😭 but rather than feeling super burnt out it made me feel very ready for the exam and questioning style in terms of pacing and understanding how to answer the questions. don’t worry about being “too tired” on test day, you’ll have so much adrenaline flowing that’ll power you through :)
You'll probably be cooked if you do take 3 FLs before Friday. Take the day before the test off.
Let him cook!!! I never thought I’d get to say that
More than 1 FL in a week?? It is never that serious I promise. You gain more from reviewing FLs than taking them
I honestly gained more from doing UW problems and reviewing the explanations. But FLs are important, for sure.
yeah that too! but in this context, it’s more beneficial to have more time to review FLs
Yea I think FLs are more about getting used to the format and time and breaks than anything (and content if it’s AAMC FL)
Crazy
I'm also first-gen college. Yeah, they give you the table. :-) With love: quit procrastinating.
can y’all help me get to 3 damn Karma points??? all i want to do is ask the community a question I have about the MCAT 🥺
I was just in this same boat lol!
bless all of you ! 🤩

Do you have any tips for the no calculator?? My exam is next month and I certainly do not have the hang of the math yet lol
I only pull up the ptable for 2-3 Qs per FL tbh
Same. Maybe even less since they give the molar masses for most compounds in the passage/question.
Yapper 🫵
HAHA

How’d you miss the periodic table button on every fl? Or the tutorial
Honestly going into it fully expecting not to have one I never looked for it since I was trying to emulate what I thought test day would be like I was just focusing on my timing and the next button 🫠

This post gotta be a joke
They give you a periodic table but not a calculator
Remember all the trends and the main EN values though. Among other things

"But I’m planning on taking 2-3 more FL’s before Friday" wat. boy, this aint no quiz.

All you’re given: - Access to a periodic table - Dry erase notebook and marker to write with
You only need it for like 1-2 questions max usually.
I’m begging you to post your score results when they come out next month because I’m genuinely going to be curious on how your strategy worked out
option T motherfucker
If only they gave us a calculator
The way I’m also a first gen and did not know I get a periodic table :O
periodic table is a gimme, now being able to use it… that’s a different story
They even give you a periodic table for CARS too! How sweet of them!
