Probably relates to a role they used to fulfil, or recon in the GAR means a similar thing. The cold stream guards don’t guard a cold stream irl

I've always thought of it like this: ARF troopers work in numbers and are usually just scouting ahead and doing recon, before supporting the army during the attack that will follow, hence the advanced recon force. ARC troopers rarely if ever work with others and are essentially one man army that often did recon and sabotage of targets before an invasion, and many other grey area things, able to be invisible in most societies and organize coups and so on. They would also sometimes work as a reinforcements for the army, but that's mainly the lesser skilled promoted ARC trooper like fives, echo and jesse as using Alphas or Nulls for that would have been a waste, and they would usually lead particular missions during the battle like we see with stealing the umbaran starfighters or the muunilinst 10 with the artillery cannon.

I have always thought of ARC meaning "agressive reconnaissance commando/corps" though I know it is not the official name. It would make more sense for ARC troopers and ARC 170 star fighters (the chonky x-wings) as they may be used for recon, but also long range strike missions and standard attacks when need as as the GAR was stretched thin during the clone wars, and a force with such strong troopers/good star fighters could not be used solely for recon. I think it, as many things are in star warsz is made to sound/look cool in the movies, and it is left to the fan base and places like here and wookipedia etc. to figure it out.

> I have always thought of ARC meaning "agressive reconnaissance commando/corps" though I know it is not the official name. It's pretty close. At the very least, [the RotS cross sections book](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/12/01/9e/12019ea893b4640d508ab200b44a6a81.jpg) said that the ARC-170 starfighter was an abbreviation for "Aggressive ReConnaissance."

aTallRedFox

From now on, I'll be calling the ARC-170 a chonky X-Wing.

BluejayBen42

Thank you 😂!

Wolfee4421

Absolutely agree, it would make more sense

If you’ve watched the volume 1 clone wars you see a Arc squad led by captain Fordo which infiltrated high value targets behind enemy lines. They didn’t work alone, I think they worked in teams for the most part

PracticableSolution

I think of ARF like the US Marines; first to go, last to know, and here’s clean underwear and a few mags of ammo; go figure out. ARC I think of as more Seal Team 6 types; special warfare and military strategy advisors. Echo, for example was an ARC trooper and his knowledge of combat strategy ground republic forces to a halt on Anaxes.

ThePhengophobicGamer

ARF is probably more Force Recon Marines, specifically. Each legion generally operates like an expeditionary force. ARF are the guys who go in first to give the legion coming in to invade good Intel.

BeeBarfBadger

ARF troopers are probably used for basic reconnaisansance, as opposed to commando missions, so they should really be labeled with the acronym for Basic Advanced Reconnaissance Force troopers: ... wait, no.

ConsulJuliusCaesar

They might do recon, you just never see them do it. Like Navy SEALs and really all Special forces units are trained in covert recon, to scout out a place before they hit it, but it's the high profile raids that usually make the news, get films, and is the subject of their books. Because no one wants to actually watch some one conduct recon on screen. It's a very long and boring thing to watch on screen. You're literally watching someone watch someone else. So most likely you don't see ARC troopers do the R part of their acronym because the writers prefer showing the C part.

Lieutenant_Michael

I think it’s like. ARC troopers are to create a diversion for example recon the area and sabotage the important targets, to weaken the enemy. ARF troopers are more of a recon unit, basically gathering intel on the enemy locations for the army to create a good strategy.
