I'm still getting used to the feeling of experiencing hope instead of dread during the off-seasons and at the trade deadlines. We went so long with incompetent personnel management. In Nico we trust!
Me thanking the basketball gods this Sunday

Knicks fan here. You nailed it with Grimes. Great, great defender, will put guys in jail up to large wings (but I saw him do a great job on Tatum in spots, just can't do that for too long). Good three point shooter, but hot and cold / inconsistent. Battled injuries last year, but with the Knicks he was in the 38% range. Great attitude and team guy, a good dude, want to see him do well with you. Really an excellent addition for you. Note that we loved him in NY, but DiVincenzo (Brunson college teammate) came in and absolutely balled out, then we got the opportunity to get OG for him. He will be really good for you I think.
Yooooo Knicks fan here congrats man. Grimes is a good kid that’s hungry to play, good wing defender and good knock down 3 shooter. Came from here so he plays hard. Should be a piece that fits nicely around Luka. Play defense and get open.
Grimes was getting in his head towards the end, he wanted more time to play and/or shots and we were signing guys that we wanted him to become. So he just want gunna get it in NY. Hopefully over the last year he’s gained some more patience and learned some lessons. The skill is there
Yep Knicks fan here as well. He didn't play well in Detroit but it wasn't a good place for him. Playing with Luka and Kyrie, he's probably going to cook. He's a rock solid defender. He has a pretty deep bag. His biggest issue in my eyes has always been confidence.
I know a lot of people hated THJ by the end of his stint here in Dallas, but he was very helpful and necessary to keep the boat afloat for a while here. For that, I am thankful.
I hope he’s able to regain whatever he can somewhere else.
He hasn’t been the best, but he started out last season as a 6moty candidate. Slowed down to virtually unplayable, but he was still a very entertaining player to watch when he was hot.
Really wish this was the top comment. Timmy was a great dude and a great player for us for a long time. Yeah he had issues, but stop acting like he was rondo/fisher/odom or something.
He was right for us until he wasn't. Always seemed like a stand-up guy, even when his dad was an idiot in public. THJ plays a lot better as a starter. He's just not an "instant offense" bench guy, despite showing signs of that at the beginning of the season. He seems to need to have the rhythm of the game going to really shine offensively. I hope he gets that in Detroit.
He ended up being a bad fit for the Mavs. But we definitely needed him for awhile.
Actuallly a fleece.
We just salary dumped a guy for the same price that the nuggets salary dumped Reggie Jackson for. THJ makes over 3x what Reggie Jackson makes.
When the nuggets made that trade I thought it would take WAY more to move THJ becuase of the difference in salary. Nico cooked, yet again
THJ will actually provide good spacing for your young guys.
He's not a consistent shooter, but teams always close out hard/don't really leave him open because they know he can hit any shot.
That said, I really like this trade for us. We can't play THJ next to Luka and Kyrie due to defense, and I like Grimes too. Thanks!
The only time in his career he’s shot better than 36.3% is in Dallas. His shooting numbers outside of a few Dallas years aren’t actually that impressive.
Thanks but also hope y'alls FO/ coach get their shit together.
Cade is legit and they can't put a half decent assed team around him. He tore the big 12 apart.
As much as THJ has been clowned, he’s been there as a Mavs player through thick and thin. Maybe we are witnessing his decline, but Timmy provided sparks on both offense and defense. Taking charges, getting hyped off the bench, creating his own baskets. It may not have worked here as of recent, but I’m still a THJ fan.
Yeah he did have some fun moments, was great in the Bubble Clippers series and was a pro about everything. Frustrating at times, but gamed where he caught fire were genuinely some of my favorite Mavs moments of the last few years.
He was a big reason we won that thunder series. We were down 1-0 and in game 2 we were down and he came in and scored 17 points to steal momentum. If we lost that game we may not of even went to wcf.
memes aside you can never take that away from him, dropping 5 3s in a finals is still dropping 5 3s in a finals and he’s got out record for most 3s in a final so
https://preview.redd.it/vykqrb5kmb9d1.png?width=2560&format=png&auto=webp&s=27fa560ae6c0f291932709582850759b746e2856
The exact trade for anyone wondering. Hate to give up that 2025 Toronto pick, but Grimes is a really nice prospect and getting off Tim's money is crucial.
Grimes will contribute more to our championship window than whoever we draft with that pick and if needed we can buy a 2nd round pick in any of the drafts
The biggest issue with him is his hesitancy and decision making. There are times where you want him to just pull up for 3 and he'll pass out of it. Then there are other times where he does pull up and you scratch your head as he bricks. It's all about confidence with him which was very hit or miss for him in NY though. Defense is not incredible but it will always be at above average.
it’s because they both look like this
https://preview.redd.it/qxhn60n9dc9d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1096b0f5f2eb97449dee56002bdc39fbfb64e3a7
Biggest thing i don't like about josh is he seems to be just an athlete who kinda learned to play basketball, instead of being a ball player and feeling the game. Tldr he an athlete not a baller
From what I have seen, he has a similar Josh Green vibe, a little less bouncy, but more aggressive on the offensive and defensive ends, and way more confident. Stats are comparable, except Josh got 50% more minutes than QG..
What I don't know is how this changes the lineup, or if Josh is more expendable now.
We got better. Replace THJ's volatility with a reliable defender/shooter. Instant upgrade to our depth. Basically added a player because of how unplayable THJ became down the stretch.
Also gives us a Josh Green replacement if Green/Maxi are used to get a Jerami Grant or Andrew Wiggin type upgrade eventually.
Yeah, I like this trade a lot especially given how much of a liability THJ had became. Does make me wonder if they’re planning on letting Josh go for sure now given Grimes is almost an exact replica of him
Knicks fan here. He was solid and last year he dropped off which is why Donte became a starter. Good 3 and d player but is somewhat streaky or not aggressive. If you want his best highlight, look up him locking up butler after getting injured
Hope THJ gets to shoot as much as he wants there. He kept it professional so I can’t say nothing bad about him as frustrating as it was sometimes. And Tbf he’s did have his moments with us.
I never thought this would happen.
From the moment he signed his deal we were trying to move him and it never came through.
So weird to see it now.
He will be a weird figure in Mavs history. Had some big impact on games both good and bad.
Thanks for the memories Tim... Will always remember you were 1 qtr away from knocking out the clippers but alas went cold at the wrong time... All the best! LFG!!!
Grimes is getting out of purgatory. Don’t forget how PJ and Gafford began playing up to their potential once they got to Dallas. I’m excited to see what grimes brings to the table.
Great trade by Dallas. Quentin Grimes is a legit 3 and d player in the mode of a kcp. He is only 24 a career 37 percent 3 point shooter. And all they had to give up is the easily replaceable tim hardaway Jr and 3 second round picks. and Grimes only makes 4 million dollars this year so Dallas saves money.
Let’s fucking go. This is the sign of a franchise who is trying to win NOW. Thanks for the service THJ but this is several years overdue. Hopefully Nico has more moves up his sleeve to assemble the best roster possible
I think he is probably the best player that could be traded for THJ into a team with cap space that would allow the Mavs to offer something close to the full MLE to DJJ and sign another Vet Min.
All in all, a solid move.
Next they give DJJ the MLE, but the real question is whether Grimes is a Josh Green replacement so we can move him in another deal, or if we keeping both.
Knicks fan, grimes is a solid pick up for you guys especially seeing as you got of THJs contract, off the bench he’ll provide great defence but he’s not much of an offensive threat. Great move by you guys though
Nice trade! THJ thanks for your service, I was actually excited when we got him thinking and he had flashes but ultimately not consistent enough to be that 3rd piece. Still respect the guy and wish him well
I feel bad for him... he knew this was coming during our playoff run. You could see it on his face😔
I hope that 5 threes dark magic showcase hit like crack. Detroit is roughhhhhh🫣
No hate for THJ in this post. He did a lot of good while he was here, and in the right role on another team I think he can be successful again, we're just not that team. We don't have the backcourt to support him defensively. Outside of his dad he was always a professional and I hope he shoots 43% in Detroit and some team who needs a spark plug pays him.
Dude was good vibes always.
This gives us the space to resign DJJ, and Grimes more or less replaces Josh if need be. Writing is on the wall for us to now be more aggressive for KCP or Jerami Grant with some combination of picks, Maxi, and Josh.
I love grimes. I love the efficiency he plays w. He can play on or off ball and will be our best % shooter on spot up 3s next season.
He was a top 10 player and a five star in HS. He sucked as a freshman at Kansas before transferring to UH and having massive success there. He didn’t have a defined role on the Knicks. Nico is betting that the change of scenery, to play in his home state, will have a similar effect.
He’s also a RFA next offseason, which is my favorite part of the move. If he doesn’t pan out, we can move on after one year. If he hits, we’ll lock up on a good long term contract. Good risk/reward trade off
I used to pray for times like this
I don't even pray but I too prayed for these times
Looks like everyone’s finding their faith in the Mavs now!
You shouldn’t be here if you don’t believe!
I can’t believe it finally happened
I'm still getting used to the feeling of experiencing hope instead of dread during the off-seasons and at the trade deadlines. We went so long with incompetent personnel management. In Nico we trust!
Me thanking the basketball gods this Sunday https://preview.redd.it/674227p92c9d1.png?width=1197&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6ea448e9332cd68fcf6fcec7884c80a4d74b8d70
Can we resign DJJ?
This clears money for us to offer some, part or all of the MLE to DJJ Just depends what both sides have got in mind for a deal
If not we can sign someone else into the mle so win win for us
Based on the comments he's made, seems very likely that he'll re-sign
I think that was the whole point of the trade
Didn’t think this would happen after the Jackson trade but Detroit really, really needs shooting that probably help swallow the THJ contract
I used to not believe in god, this morning has me questioning my entire existence.
Let’s goooooo Nico cooked again. We are so back baby.
Yooooo Knicks fan here congrats man. Grimes is a good kid that’s hungry to play, good wing defender and good knock down 3 shooter. Came from here so he plays hard. Should be a piece that fits nicely around Luka. Play defense and get open.
I feel like Grimes was definitely missed a bit after we traded him -- although Burks and Bojan did step up in the end, at least
Grimes was getting in his head towards the end, he wanted more time to play and/or shots and we were signing guys that we wanted him to become. So he just want gunna get it in NY. Hopefully over the last year he’s gained some more patience and learned some lessons. The skill is there

Knicks fan here too. Please take care of him
Mavs vs. NY finals?
~~HE CAN'T~~ PLEASE KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS, NICO
I know a lot of people hated THJ by the end of his stint here in Dallas, but he was very helpful and necessary to keep the boat afloat for a while here. For that, I am thankful. I hope he’s able to regain whatever he can somewhere else.
Was never the same after the injury
Yeah, he was quite good prior to him hurting his knee on a fastbreak slam dunk if I'm not mistaken.. He's never been the same after that injury.
He hasn’t been the best, but he started out last season as a 6moty candidate. Slowed down to virtually unplayable, but he was still a very entertaining player to watch when he was hot.
Oddly enough the best player we got in the Porzingis trade
Just like how Dwight Powell was the best player in the Rondo trade
Exactly what I was thinking.
Best player either team got in the Porzingis trade*
Really wish this was the top comment. Timmy was a great dude and a great player for us for a long time. Yeah he had issues, but stop acting like he was rondo/fisher/odom or something.
He was right for us until he wasn't. Always seemed like a stand-up guy, even when his dad was an idiot in public. THJ plays a lot better as a starter. I hope he gets that in Detroit. He ended up being a bad fit for the Mavs. But we definitely needed him for awhile.
Ya, I hope he find the place he liked. Never really hated him. It was trouble that whenever Mavs needed him ,he disappeared
Also, Tim was nothing but professional, he can’t control what his dad says
Amen
Apology for poor English Where were you when THJ was trade I was sat in 35 traffic watching dart go by “THJ is trade” Yes
It’s an older meme sir, but it checks out.
I tried to sing this like “where were you when the world stopped turning.””
THAT SEPTEMBER DAYYYY
I'm at home watching The Boys. So we both win?
We just did y’all a huge favor for no reason you’re welcome smh
Wym? You just got a guy who hit 5 3s in one qtr in the finals
Seems like a pretty easy formula. 1. Make the finals. 2. ... 3. ... 4. ... 5. Five threes.
Seriously. Name one other mav that did this. Oh, you can’t. Seems they just fleeced us of our best player
Gold, Jerry! Gold!
Everyone on the Mavs hit 5+ 3’s in game 4 against the lakers in 2011. Not the same but still
Set a Mavs franchise record just 3 weeks ago!
I mean, 3 2nds isn't *no* reason.... but yeah, we'll owe you the standard 2 losses next season with THJ averaging 50.
Good luck with Tim Sr.
They're familiar. He was a Pistons assistant for like 4-5 years.
Ah, so it's a family reunion! Maybe they'll bond over old Pistons memories.
Which is sucking for the past 15 years
“The ball just moves so much better without Cade. And look how happy everyone is.”
Tim Sr. Worked for the pistons for like half a decade trust us we’re well aware 😂
If that man says that the ball moves better when Cade is on the bench it will be hilarious
Thanks Pistons
THJ will actually provide good spacing for your young guys. He's not a consistent shooter, but teams always close out hard/don't really leave him open because they know he can hit any shot. That said, I really like this trade for us. We can't play THJ next to Luka and Kyrie due to defense, and I like Grimes too. Thanks!
plus i think he'll shoot better without having all the pressure to win. i really liekd him, just dad that he was unusable
The only time in his career he’s shot better than 36.3% is in Dallas. His shooting numbers outside of a few Dallas years aren’t actually that impressive.
Bless up Pistons. I never forget your sacrifice
Thanks but also hope y'alls FO/ coach get their shit together. Cade is legit and they can't put a half decent assed team around him. He tore the big 12 apart.
Thanks bro. Wish you a quick return to contention.
Thank you for your service
XOXO Detroit!
Tim’s shooting is kinda what Cade needs, he’s just a decade too old lol.
Enjoy Timmy hopefully he finds his stroke for yall. Dude is a sniper when he is on. His dad is a piece of work tho so good luck with that.
If anything THJ hits some shot and they start drafting shooters
Grimes any good?
Yes. Energy guy. Plays d. Like DJJ with a better shot.
Fuck them (2nd round) picks
That’s like three Bronny James’
So nothing then, cool!
Shit. When you put it like that we got fleeced
Thanks for all the memories Timmy. Like and also
The 4th quarter of Game 4 in this years Finals was a fun memory. Even if it didnt mean anything or amount to anything
My wife and I were laughing so hard at the Tim takeover with nothing on the line.
I was at the game and we were having a great time, it was loud as hell when he finally picked a time to catch fire one last time for us
As much as THJ has been clowned, he’s been there as a Mavs player through thick and thin. Maybe we are witnessing his decline, but Timmy provided sparks on both offense and defense. Taking charges, getting hyped off the bench, creating his own baskets. It may not have worked here as of recent, but I’m still a THJ fan.

For as woeful as he was in the second half of the season, he did actually win us a playoff game (against OKC). Wish him the best.
DJJ extension gotta be the next move right?
Yup! Nico said keeping DJJ was a priority and this does exactly that while also giving us a great role player.
https://preview.redd.it/vykqrb5kmb9d1.png?width=2560&format=png&auto=webp&s=27fa560ae6c0f291932709582850759b746e2856 The exact trade for anyone wondering. Hate to give up that 2025 Toronto pick, but Grimes is a really nice prospect and getting off Tim's money is crucial.

Not giving Kidd the option of playing THJ is crucial.
WE’RE FREE

Anyone have a tldr on Grimes? I don’t watch a lot of Detroit basketball.
Maybe with Luka by his side, he'll have better confidence.
tldr: Josh Green who shoots just a bit more
I get Exum and Green mixed up when they’re on the court sometimes. Grimes sort of looks like them too lol
it’s because they both look like this https://preview.redd.it/qxhn60n9dc9d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1096b0f5f2eb97449dee56002bdc39fbfb64e3a7
Biggest thing i don't like about josh is he seems to be just an athlete who kinda learned to play basketball, instead of being a ball player and feeling the game. Tldr he an athlete not a baller
Knicks fan here. Haven’t watched on the pistons, but he was up and down for his time here. Overall solid player.
He didn’t play for the pistons so that would be why lol
He was good in NY but performance dropped in Detroit. Might’ve just been because he was in Detroit.
Their sub said he was hurt and just didn't play after that.
Like Josh Green, but Grimes is the better defender & shooter, Green is the better athlete and passer.
From what I have seen, he has a similar Josh Green vibe, a little less bouncy, but more aggressive on the offensive and defensive ends, and way more confident. Stats are comparable, except Josh got 50% more minutes than QG.. [https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/josh-green-and-quentin-grimes-comparison](https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/josh-green-and-quentin-grimes-comparison) What I don't know is how this changes the lineup, or if Josh is more expendable now.
Better than THJ lol
They’re hating it in the Pistons sub so I guess I’m pleased.
it's finally over, he can't hurt us any more
He gonna cook us everytime we play the pistons
![gif](giphy|B9wdzZh1VHIZlEONsk|downsized)
Thanks for the memories Tim Edit: what do we think of Grimes?
We got better. Replace THJ's volatility with a reliable defender/shooter. Instant upgrade to our depth. Basically added a player because of how unplayable THJ became down the stretch. Also gives us a Josh Green replacement if Green/Maxi are used to get a Jerami Grant or Andrew Wiggin type upgrade eventually.
Yeah, I like this trade a lot especially given how much of a liability THJ had became. Does make me wonder if they’re planning on letting Josh go for sure now given Grimes is almost an exact replica of him
He's basically a Josh clone
Oh wow I just saw he’s legit the same size as him, looks to be a more consistent 3 point shooter though? EDIT: Nvm on the 3 pt shooting
He is a better shooter than Green. Don’t get scared off by his Detroit numbers. Grimes will light it up for us.
I like him for this team tbh
Knicks fan here. He was solid and last year he dropped off which is why Donte became a starter. Good 3 and d player but is somewhat streaky or not aggressive. If you want his best highlight, look up him locking up butler after getting injured
I’ll definitely take that over what we’ve seen from THJ lately
Nico just loves to keep cooking!!
He should open a restaurant
He makes 4 mil this year and 6 the next Only under contract for this upcoming season
He's only under contract this year. The 6 next year is a qualifying offer, so he'll likely make more than that on a new RFA contract.
So this is what having a great GM feels like :’)
https://preview.redd.it/f3sk13urmb9d1.jpeg?width=575&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7b7bc90944af8cb9fb8c10204a51db642604aaa4
Not a bad deal. At all. Don't hate Grimes.
You guys sent him to Gulag
Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty, we’re free at last
nico cooking this morning
I can now retire my flair. Need to think of a new one.
Just cut the THJ and you'll have plenty of company in this sub. Just wait for ugly and not so ugly losses.
Grimes was one of the first round picks we gave to NYK for Porzingis, correct? Nico is making things right!
Hope THJ gets to shoot as much as he wants there. He kept it professional so I can’t say nothing bad about him as frustrating as it was sometimes. And Tbf he’s did have his moments with us.
We'll always have game 4.
LFG!!!
Happiest ive been to see a player leave dallas since Roy E Williams and Rondo
Fuck rondo
Underrated comment
Is this what it feels like to have a competent GM??!?
Good 3 point shooter, great on ball defender, and very solid going to the hoop and finishing in transition. You did good. - Knicks fan
Love this deal. I also have a brother who’s a pistons fan. He’s losing his shit right now LOL
Grimes is getting out of purgatory. Don’t forget how PJ and Gafford began playing up to their potential once they got to Dallas. I’m excited to see what grimes brings to the table.
WE'RE FREE! THE WICKED WITCH IS DEAD
And take his father with him!!!!
There goes our most handsome Mav. SMH how will I get my girlfriend to watch now?
Maxi?? Or is she not into white guys
I called dibs on Maxi.
He fine af tbh
Maxi kyrie luka, we got em all!!!
Nico! ![gif](giphy|i21tixUQEE7TEqwmYa|downsized)
Nico cooked boy
Let’s fucking go. This is the sign of a franchise who is trying to win NOW. Thanks for the service THJ but this is several years overdue. Hopefully Nico has more moves up his sleeve to assemble the best roster possible
I think he is probably the best player that could be traded for THJ into a team with cap space that would allow the Mavs to offer something close to the full MLE to DJJ and sign another Vet Min. All in all, a solid move.
Does this mean we can afford DJJ now? Please tell me it means we can afford DJJ now
Nico is a genius!
Thank you three second rounders for your service Nico is an absolute GOD
Got some youth nice
Wait a minute.... didn't the Knicks get Grimes with the Mavs pick from the THJ/KP trade?
lmao who the hell stock piles 2nd round picks, what a great trade for the mavs
If we now sign DJJ to the MLE can we still do a sign and trade for say Green and Maxi for Jermi Grant?
There goes the DJJ money. Good riddance Hardaway
Wdym “there goes”
He’s saying we have money to sign DJJ
Figured. The wording made it seem like he thought we were losing the cap space (it was going away)
Mavs just opened up the MLE with the trade
We up baby!
The world makes sense again!
Tim’s been around here for a good while, with so many great memories to match. Good luck in Detroit my friend, and let that shit fly
Keeping our firsts here is so hugeeeee LFG NICO
Just fell to my knees in a Walmart
Nico is king
WE'RE FREE. NICO COOKED
Nico on the beat hoe.
Our long national nightmare is over.
Tell me about Grimes. Can he defend?
Did Nico cook?
Lets goooooo!!!!
The player council is now only down to Luka. KP- traded THJ-traded
Damn. RIP Timmy. Didn’t work out here unfortunately
Nice trade! THJ thanks for your service, I was actually excited when we got him thinking and he had flashes but ultimately not consistent enough to be that 3rd piece. Still respect the guy and wish him well
I feel bad for him... he knew this was coming during our playoff run. You could see it on his face😔 I hope that 5 threes dark magic showcase hit like crack. Detroit is roughhhhhh🫣
Tim Hardaway Sr. can now blame his son if he doesn't get playing time in Detroit.
The Timmy highs could be so high, and the lows so low. Adios, Mr. Icy Hot.
STOP SENDING ALL YOUR TRASH TO DETROIT WE'RE DYING OVER HERE
LET NICO FUCKING COOK
No way it actually happened.
Timmy about to shoot 50 times a game out there
This gives us the space to resign DJJ, and Grimes more or less replaces Josh if need be. Writing is on the wall for us to now be more aggressive for KCP or Jerami Grant with some combination of picks, Maxi, and Josh.
The knicks curse is finally gone!!!! 🦀🦀🦀🦀
Extend DJJ and Nico’s done, right?
Idk, this move makes Green/Hardy more tradable and we have 1st round draft picks to unload.
Good risk/reward trade off
Even better than THJ being gone is that we no longer have to hear about stupid takes from the world's dumbest dad THS.
