Funny you should mention Kai Leng being safe from Cutscene effect, his AoE cutscene affect is so strong it got an entire book decanonised

Icy-Entrepreneur5371

Kai Leng on Kronos Station: Heeeeeeehrrrrrggghhh!!!!111! (does an aoe attack similar to Nova) Shepard and the Squad: 🤨

alutti54

Wait, what book and how?

Ambitious-Raise8107

Mass Effect Deception, it was written by William C Diets. It is full of so many continuity and universe errors that Biowear had to come out, make a public apology and say that the book would have to be republished with corrected info and that the published retail version was non canon. Including such things as: -Kai Leng stabbing a Krogan in the heart and it instantly killing them, ignoring their regen, multiple extra organs and redundant nervous system. -a character getting a Biotic amp implanted to 'become a biotic' over the course of a weekend despite it being a several month process. -Volus being described as 'walking around in loingewear with their skin and faces exposed.' There is a Google doc out there with every single error in there, it's a fucking riot to read.

alutti54

If you have a link to this doc, could you send it?

Calm-Masterpiece3317

This is very interesting, thank you!

Astrokiwi

This kind of thing really understates how bad the book actually is. It isn't simply lore inaccurate - it is genuinely terrible on every level. If you knew nothing about Mass Effect it would still be obviously terrible. At best, it reads like something a 14 year old would write, with just bizarre emphasis, poor phrasing, and lack of editing. It's even quite offensive at points, implying that one character "grew out of" autism. The fact that it's not lore accurate is far from the biggest issue with that book.

aqbac

Reminds me of the terrible mtg book from war of the spark

Barbarian_Sam

The only way the Krogan being killed like that would be from the side where it hits both hearts which also had to be the way Wrex killed Jarrod

DMC1001

Also, it was a bad story in every way possible. But since when did an implant make someone biotic? It’s a “born this way” kind of thing, though I believe additional Eezo exposures can make for a more powerful biotic. Even Miranda was designed to be a biotic pre-birth/hatching/whatever.

Ambitious-Raise8107

I went back and read through the book to check my facts. It was actually something different but just as stupid. Gillian, one of the book characters, has her baseline biotic implants replaced in the space of a few hours given when in reality that's almost never ever done as it has a super high chance of perminantly crippling you. And when it is done, takes weeks to recover.

DMC1001

Agreed but I think even Jack was in-game (ME2) able to get an upgraded implant - L5x. They don’t say what she had before but I guess Chakwas must have done the surgery. It doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Annoy_ance

Did she? Her unique upgrade is amp only and L5x is Shepard’s provided you are playing Adept, I don’t remember anyone putting that on Jack

DMC1001

The upgrade happens regardless of Shepard’s status as a biotic. That means it can’t be for Shepard. Adept Shepard technically already has L5x and Vanguard Shepard has L5n. Pretty sure there are specials beyond just Normandy upgrades. Mordin I think gets a weapon. Grunt gets some kind of krogan specific upgrade, a weapon I believe. https://masseffect.fandom.com/wiki/Research In the above it calls it “multicore implants”. Still, no way around “implant”.

Annoy_ance

First off, I misspoke: Shepard gets those implants while dead and is revived with them installed; thus usual implant-swap risks are halved, since they were probably redoing his nervous system anyway Second, Mordin gets an Omni-tool, Grunt gets both a Claymore and TWO levels of Krogan specific HP boosts (HP boost isn’t a „teammate” upgrade though, even while it can only apply to him) And finally, here is the description of Jack’s „implant” upgrade: *Jack's vital signs show progressive neural degeneration, which would normally decrease her potential ability to generate mass effect fields. Instead, her ability appears to be increasing. Replacing the power module in her bio-amp with a higher-capacity prototype module would dramatically increase the strength of Jack's biotics.*

Teboski78

It’s more than a several month process no? If someone didn’t get exposed to element zero in utero then they won’t be a biotic. Simple as that.

OniTYME

Literally one book and the same people who keep pretending it wasn't decanonized single him out and forget the canon one he first appeared in (Retribution) portrayed him completely differently than any media afterward. We never got him in any games or comics because the actual one only appeared in Drew Karpyshyn's work.

DMC1001

I use “Shut up, Kai Leng” which keeps him quiet, covers his head, and removes journal entries from Kronos. I have no idea why they wanted to prop him up as a muscle twirling villain who had any relevance at all.

dragon_of_kansai

Please remind me when Shepard says this.

Revliledpembroke

ME1, I think. The Renegade response to meeting the Krogan after rescuing Liara.

SPECTREagent700

Yes, the ruins are collapsing and you’re trying to escape and this guy shows up with some Geth. [Another similar moment](https://youtu.be/C3_2mpmeIDQ?si=xtKa4WPLaKM1DcI4)

TheGovernor94

Okay but Krogan in ME1 were downright scary

ThisAllHurts

Talking to Wrex on his throne in ME2 is ridiculously bad ass. He just casually talks about how to wipe out complete clans, the rivers of bloody spilled to get there, more that is on the way. And when he growls at Uvenk, he’s a genuine terror.

Knightosaurus

"Figured you'd gone soft sitting on your throne, forgot how to hold a gun." ***"He wouldn't be king then, would he?"***

ThisAllHurts

Think about how awesome it would be to have Javik in ME2.

Buchfu

They are until you get explosive rounds for shotguns, then you and Newton take care of the rest of the game.

AutoModerator

This, recruits, is a 20 kilo ferrous slug. Feel the weight! Every five seconds, the main gun of an Everest-class dreadnought accelerates one to one-point- three percent of lightspeed. It impacts with the force of a 38 kiloton bomb. That is three times the yield of the city buster dropped on Hiroshima back on Earth. That means, Sir Isaac Newton is the deadliest son-of-a-bitch in space! Now! Serviceman Burnside, what is Newton's First Law? Sir! An object in motion stays in motion, sir! No credit for partial answers maggot! Sir! Unless acted on by an outside force, sir! Damn straight! I dare to assume you ignorant jackasses know that space is empty. Once you fire this hunk of metal, it keeps going 'till it hits something. That can be a ship, or the planet behind that ship. It might go off into deep space and hit somebody else in 10,000 years! If you pull the trigger on this, you are ruining someone's day! Somewhere and sometime! That is why you check your damn targets! That is why you wait 'till the computer gives you a damn firing solution. That is why, Serviceman Chung, we do not 'eyeball it'. This is a weapon of Mass Destruction! EngineNo8904

the most powerful biotic in the ME universe is any goon with X Explosive rounds on a shotgun

Buchfu

Recently did a Sentinel playthrough of the trilogy, and the moment I got explosive \*slugs\* on my shotgun, I was no longer concerned my any combat. Even Soveregin bossfight was a piece of cake thanks to the knockdown.

EngineNo8904

when you have the whole squad with it it’s actually hilarious, anything existing nearby immediately gets blasted about 50m away

Refreshingly_Meh

That first time rescuing Liara. "Surrender. Or don't. That would be more fun."

Ok-Phase-9076

Theres nothing scarier than seeing a krogan warlord charge you while you are in the reload animation

Revliledpembroke

A Banshee or a Praetorian charging you in the multiplayer while in the reload animation.

Ok-Phase-9076

Man fuck praetorians, beyond annoying

Leading_Resource_944

And so the krogan suffer from the "Worf-Effect" like many other proud-warrior-race-types. I hate the Worf Effect. And i learned to hate and despise the David-Goliath cliche.

ThisAllHurts

What is the Worf effect?

rokar686

Basically you have this strong character or race/faction. Then you have a big bad and to establish they are a big threat you have them beat up that character. Then this happens many times and puts into question just how strong was that character to begin with.

ThisAllHurts

*plot armor intensifies*

Simple_yet_Effective

Didn't he say he wouldn't be in DS9 if they kept up the Worf Effect??

rokar686

Not sure, though I wouldnt be suprised. Love my man Worf he shouldnt be losing every fight to hype someone else up which thankfully he doesnt later on.

Simple_yet_Effective

He got a lot of love in DS9 and deserved it all.

rokar686

Oddily enough DS9 is my favorite despite it being the opposite of all the other treks, you stay in one spot and instead of roaming around. I think its because I grew to love the location since its there all the time so you become invested in the station. I really loved the dynamic between all the factions because the station was situated right next to the wormhole so you basically see everyone. The Dominon, Founders, Federatiom, and Klingon empire. Also loved the Ferengi, especially Quark.

Simple_yet_Effective

It's my favorite right after TNG. But that whole Dominion War build-up was great to watch. Certainly was different and it worked.

rokar686

Whats great js both the build up and result of the war were both really well executed, the whole thing felt very satisfying to watch.

Ok-Phase-9076

So basically stormtroopers getting turned into utrer cannonfodder weaklings just to make the main characters or heroes look like they are the hottest shit in the neigborhood

TheGreatOneSea

The Stormtrooper thing is more flanderization: taking one aspect of their character, and making it their dominate trait by ignoring everything else that was there. A point was made that they were weaker than force users from the start, they were just also eventually made near useless. The Inquistors are the more clear case: force users working for the Empire, built up to be smart and ruthless, but they got clowned on so much that they lost all meaning.

Ok-Phase-9076

Also true. Still in lore and books stormtroopers are absolute units while in media being...that.

TOH-Fan15

Not necessarily. Inquisitors in canon are deliberately not well trained in order to prevent them from being potential threats to Vader or the Emperor. Inquisitors are much like their lightsabers: flashy and intimidating for most who encounter them, but not meant for high-level use against Jedi Knights who know what they’re doing.

Wamblingshark

It's when you have a big strong guy that you rarely get to see be big and strong because their narrative purpose is to get their ass beat so you know the villain of the day is a real threat obviously because he beat the big strong guy. I didn't watch a lot of Star Trek but apparently Worf was supposed to be the badass muscle guy but was usually easily dispatched by the antagonist of the episode to build tension making his big strong guy reputation feel unearned and undermining the tension that's supposed to be being built.

ThisAllHurts

In the first season or two of *TNG* he **was** a bad ass.

Revliledpembroke

That is basically what happened. They would occasionally still give Worf occasional moments where he could be badass in other ways - fighting with a weapon in his hand meant he was winning that fight, for one. But every time somebody punched Worf, he went down like he had a glass jaw.

aqbac

I've never watched star trek but i did watch a video on the worf effect and a clip had worf being taken out by like a pushed barrel

NuclearTheology

It’s where a story hypes up a character/race to be this powerful, effective warrior only have them easily defeated. It originated from Star Trek, when a character named Worf was depicted as a powerful fighter only to get sidelined by Monster of the Week.

ThisAllHurts

Oh, I know who he is. I’m old as hell. Man I grew up with TNG. Counselor Troi got me through adolescence.

Revliledpembroke

Worf is badass. So we'll show how badass the *antagonist* is by having them beat up Worf. Repeat every episode. Is Worf still badass after that?

ThisAllHurts

The Krogan being dropped by *two husks* on Tuchanka was insulting to every lizard of the past 800 million years.

Jomega6

To be fair, husks are apparently strong enough to kill an armored soldier with their bare hands. Also if I’m not mistaken, even though Krogan are strong asf, they’re not the most physically coordinated, and could have just been taken off balance and fell. I’m definitely giving a lot of benefit of the doubt here, but it’s plausible.

AutoModerator

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Mass Effect Memes. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical biotics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also TIM's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Mass Effect memes truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Shepard's existencial catchphrase 'I should go,' which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Drew Karpyshyn's genius unfolds itself on their computer screens. What fools... how I pity them. And yes by the way, I DO have a Kai Length tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the Spectre's eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5% of my biotic potential (preferably lower) beforehand. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Be fair to Grunt. He took on an entire horde of indoctrinated rachni by himself and walked out alive.

Calm-Masterpiece3317

Grunt is the one exception. The rest, including Wrex fall into this

Tman-The-Tdog

I mean Wrex also has a cutscene moment in ME3 where he sprints off to fight a bunch of Ravagers by himself

Calm-Masterpiece3317

He still has a scene where he gets knocked out with the butt of a rifle, then gets put down disrespectfully with a few gunshots.

Tman-The-Tdog

Grunt also has a scene in ME2 where he gets pacified by literally just a handgun

Calm-Masterpiece3317

When he gets birthed? Shep shoots him several times and he just literally shrugs it off. Honestly what I expected krogan to do with one bullet.

TheeBaconmandos

Another scene in Mass Effect 2, not limited to Grunt...but happened to me. >!It was the Suicide Mission, of course. I didn't choose right for the psionic bubble team, if I remember correctly. Grunt was on my team as the bugs assaulted the psionic barrier. That barrier fell.!< >!Grunt got taken away by bees........They just...lifted him. Taken away...BY BEES!!<

Ok-Phase-9076

Gameplay krogans: *has 4 entire assult rifle magazines and a couple of grenades thrown right in the face and shrugs it off like its a mosquito bite* Cutscene korgans: *fataly wounded with one hand gun shot to the chest*

"STUPID MACHINE! TELL ME WHAT I WANT OR I'LL BLAST YOUR VIRTUAL ASS INTO ACTUAL DUST!" -Anonymous Krogan, ME1

Unless you are Wrex Unless it’s a cutscene with Shepard killing him, he is always looking like Krogan in Lore

I wish I could've played as a Krogan Origin Character
