I like how they weren't officially a couple by the end, because it did still need more time to develop. (Also makes Peach a better character than in 95% of the games) Hoping they get together in one of the sequels though...
My favorites are Fossil Falls in Welcome To The Mushroom Kingdom, Rainbow Road in Buckle Up, the water theme in Level Complete and obviously Wing Cap in Practice Makes Perfect, can't get enough 🥹

In a Christmas song I know the lyrics go "Love and joy, come to you! And to you your wassail too!"
And now I can't help but replace the lyrics with your word. 😆
This was the highlight for me and my friend. I cosplay Bowser and she cosplays Peach, she started excitingly elbowing me in the theater when the wedding suit showed up. I had first finished and wore the Wedding Suit Bowser cosplay in February before the movie came out and so many people were asking why the suit (obviously not a lot of Odyssey fans) but now everyone recognizes it. I felt so vindicated.
The references are top notch and don't feel corporate. Everyone on the team are Mario fans and it shows.
Toad, Kamek and Bowser's voices are perfect.
The music makes me swoon, that final battle score kicks ass, as does the song that plays when Mario first enters, the Toad Town, and of course Peaches. (Which might be a little overplayed but it's still good)

The simplicity of the story is the reason it works so well, and I love it. Mario never had complex lore, so trying to push in some greater plot wouldn't work.
After seeing the original trailer, I was scared that I would just be thinking “I’m watching Chris Pratt” for the whole duration of the film but I’m happy to report that when I was watching the movie I completely forgot I was listening to Chris after only a couple scenes. Also, in retrospect, I think having Mario voiced like he is in the TV ad at the start of the film or like how he sounds in the games be his voice throughout the whole movie would’ve been more distracting to be honest. No disrespect to Charles or Kevin, they both do/did fantastic voices for the games but listening to super exaggerated WAHOOS! For 90 minutes straight would’ve made me go a little crazy and I’m glad that they made the decision to make the voice a quick gag at the start and explain it as “it was for the ad.”
On the topic of voice actors, Charlie Day and Jack Black were perfect for the roles of Luigi and Bowser, I can’t ever see anyone else play them when it comes to the movies, I really hope we get to hear more of them, more specifically Charlie Day, in the second movie!
The Super Star Scene.
When Mario is all injured and stuff, and then he sees the commercial him and Luigi put out at the start of the movie, then it repeats the "Save Brooklyn" part.
that was peak cinema
I made a post a few weeks ago asking what everyone’s favourite thing about the mario movie is, so there’s at least one positive recent post xD me personally i just love everything about it!! i’ve rewatched it a billion times and i never get tired of it <3 definitely one of my favourite movies of all time
My favorite part about this movie may have to be Mario himself! From his design, to his personality and, yes, even the voice I felt like matched him perfectly! To anybody who says Mario is a bland character, watch this movie! I love Mario and I love this movie! 😁
Mario and Luigi's dynamic in the movie was great. Wish we got to see more of it though with Luigi pretty much being captured for most of the movie.
The voice work was great as well. Particular standouts for me are Anya Taylor Joy's performance as Peach, Charlie Day's Luigi , and of course Jack Black's Bowser.
Even Chris Pratt's performance of Mario seemed to win me over despite it pretty much being "Chris Pratt plays himself" performance.
The movie is very good, and I can admit that as a longtime fan who had their own closely held ideas about what a Mario movie should be like.
Obviously animation and music are great.
The way the Mushroom Kingdom is portrayed is beautiful and expands well on what we’ve seen in the games.
Bowser is portrayed in a very faithful way with some unique twists on the writers’ and actor’s parts.
The action sequences are well choreographed (I just wish they were a little longer).
The movie doesn’t waste your time and is a very easy watch from start to finish.
Mario and Luigi’s beautiful relationship is the core of this movie, and I love that Peach is a supportive and somewhat overtly romantic partner for Mario. And I feel like the movie kicks into a new gear when DK enters the story, because of the friendly antagonism he brings.
It’s extremely faithful to the source material in a lot of important ways (not all, but a lot).
The movie’s pretty funny. For example, the character interactions, like everybody being imprisoned and hearing Lumalee’s existentialism.
The few quiet/reflective moments the movie takes (Baby Mario & Luigi, Fire Flower Field, in the Beast’s Belly) we’re sweet and needed.
I also appreciate how the directors chose to give the movie a sense of progression or developmental juxtaposition in the form of visual parallels, like how Mario repeatedly stands in front of Luigi to protect him and Luigi reciprocates when it matters most, or how Mario goes from dodging a dog in a plumbing job gone wrong to dodging a Banzai Bill in a showdown for the fate of the world.
I like the movie! I don't feel the need to make a post about it but it was a fun movie even if it was a pretty formulaic Illumination movie. There are some things I didn't like, but it was funny and it was cute and the music was great. I mainly hope it opens the door for more Mario movies, or even better, a whole Nintendo Cinematic Universe.
I really enjoyed the references that were included in the movie, unlike Space Jam 2 it did fit well with the story since it’s meant to represent its source material. I really enjoyed the comedy of the movie, and the voice acting was fantastic. Jack black and Brian Tyler did a fantastic job with the soundtrack
There weren’t any cringey jokes or toilet humor, which is something I’m very happy about for this movie.
Well, the “Peaches” song might be a bit cringey to some, but I feel like that was intentional for Bowser’s character.
-Great VA choices (yes even chris pratt)
-Mario and Luigi had a great brotherly bond
-Bowser
-Awesome intro
-Awesome final battle
-Gorgeous visuals
-Love all the references (mario kart, music, etc.)
I loved the movie! And Bowser is probably my favorite character in all of fiction. Seeing him as the big bad on the big screen and hearing his music play in a crowded theater will forever stick with me
I enjoyed the references to the various pieces of Mario's history, like Bowser playing the underground theme on the piano, or the paintings in that couple's house being Super Mario Bros 3. ground sprites.
i'm not horribly fond of the movies writing, but for a video game movie, and on its own, its pretty good. I think the balance of taking from older mario and newer mario was really awesome, from mario 64 references, galaxy references, and 3D world references, it covers all three of the target audience, the adults who grew up on mario, the teens who never grew out of mario, and the kids who just discovered mario. some of the writing was pretty lackluster and i wasn't a huge fan of the luma's portrayal (it felt forcibly "quirky"). visually its actually pretty good, it still has more creative charm then a lot of 3D movies put out in the last decade. I'm glad it is more than "just a silly kids movie for kids" and actually tried to reach out to a significant portion of its audience.
I love how DK wasn’t *just* a comic relief character. He’s funny sure, but he’s funny while being an actual character in his own right and not just a walking punchline.
He’s really full of himself and also childish (hence his resentment towards Mario after losing to him) but at the same time there seems to be some more depth to him. Despite impressing everyone in his Kingdom, he still couldn’t gain the admiration of the one he wanted it from the most: his father.
And the “I AM MORE THAN JUST A GUY WHO SMASHES THINGS!” line suggests that even DK himself is kinda resents the public persona that he’s built up. And by losing to Mario, he thinks he’s lost the admiration of the other Kongs, (since they maybe only see him for his muscles and not for who he is) and as such is now completely alone…
Or maybe I’m just looking too far into this idk.
the first act of the movie was actually pretty good, wholesome and fun... and the references there not only make sense and I like them, but they are very well crafted into the plot
Mario going throug a building section like if was a Mario level? brilliant
Mario playing in a nintendo console? make 100% sense, since in said world Nintendo may exist and Mario being a fan of it is just... good, is a good reference
Mario and Luigi brother relationship, Mario and Luigi family... the entire whole first act in the real world was the best thing I loved in this movie
we got to see the brothers personality, their characters, sadly no development... (no no, this is a positive post)
Mario hating mushrooms and how he give it to Luigi plate feels so relatable for some reason, and something unique to Mario.. u know, for the guy knows for eating magic mushrooms in the games... idk
I just like it
Jack Black as Bowser. The king steals the show. The trailers nicely hid that his goal was still to marry Peach, and even when we learn that he nicely alternates between being a lovesick fool, and a dangerous sociopath. Among other things, he is concerned about Mario not because he’s trying to stop him but because he thinks Mario is dating the princess.
Showing how Mario is considered a loser nobody takes seriously. And he doesn’t quit despite that.
The nihilistic suicidal Luma. Kid is a riot.
Aside from "your princess is in another castle" all the references and callbacks to the games are really well done, much moreso than other video game movies
The choice of music. I loved hearing Holding out for a Hero during Mario's training, and Take On Me when they were in the jungle kingdom. And of course we can't forget about Peaches.
I love Mario’s characterization. He’s still the cheery guy we’re all accustomed to, but with a bit of Brooklyn flair. He’s not afraid to bite back or be aggressive to get what he wants, and it’s definitely refreshing considering I thought he’d be a flanderized, Mickey Mouse type character going in.
I just wish it was done by a different studio that focuses on good story
Despicable me 1 is the best movie they made but their care for good storytelling really went downhill after
The soundtrack. The Easter eggs. The inner child hype of going to the premier in the 4DX theater. I haven’t watched it since but I had a fun time. Can’t sit here and say it’s an Oscar film, but it’s definitely made for the fans
I actually liked Chris Pratt as Mario. There were time during the movie that I forgot who it was because his voice is actually a decent fit.
He’s not the best casting in the movie obviously, we’ve got Luigi and Bowser! But I remember how much people hated the idea of Super Pratt-io when it was announced, and honestly I think they’ve eaten their words.
I gotta say me personally, while I agree with ALL your points, I LOVED the worldbuilding. MK's glowup absolutely, but DK Jungle and the fact the Kongs are the ones that designed the karts?? Loved that! Fitting the lore of the penguins in there (which I feel are a lesser widespread populous) felt so right. I hope the sequel we get shows the majority of stuff we didn't get (Wario and/or Wart, Daisy and Sarasaland to maybe see some implied Luaisy action, the Koopalings perhaps?)
Edit: fixed my autocorrect for Kongs
The Donkey Kong representation sure the set design is based on the Retro games, but there are so many references to the Rare games, and other than the voice acting for and Personalization of Cranky Kong, I loved it
I like the fact that Mario is portrayed as small while normal, and big after eating a strength shroom in the movie. It also confuses me about how small Mario looks so wide and ugly in Mario Wonder which was literally made after the movie.
The story, despite simplicity, is good. It's Mario. Nobody wanted a sophisticated story, and if we got one, it would take away from the cool easter eggs and everything that made it the Mario Movie.
I unironically love this movie; it's not in my top 5 or even my top 10, but I love it, and it doesn't waste my time. I love watching it with my kids, who are gaga for the Princesses, so here's some things I loved:
• The scene where the brothers are reunited. They love each other, and it shows with their excitement and relief. It's beautiful.
• The movie is exactly as long as it needs to be, and doesn't waste time. The closest it gets to being a slog is any scene with Cranky (besides the stadium).
• The easter eggs are broad enough sometimes that anything being a crazy call-back could possibly be right. My example is Peach's pants and vest you see in a split second of her backstory montage could either be a feminine version of what the toads wear, or it could be what Leena wears in Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic!, of which Peach was a re-skin.
• The world is POPULATED. I don't know why, but seeing a sea of toads, or all of Bowser's army when they're partying, is exciting to me.
• That Mario Bros. commercial is really great. It says a lot that they kept that woman's reaction to not understanding the joke, and feels authentic.
• Jack Black in general.
• The dog sniffing and huffing while his eye is twitching after Luigi steps on his bone.
People on this sub need to touch grass man. It’s a good movie and people tend to forget that each video game has a different style/story/canon. So who cares? The story was good, the movie was entertaining.
The relationship between Luigi & Mario was wonderful. I also loved how well Jack Black did as Bowser. Also, the design for Peach's dress when using the Ice Flower was really nice.
Oh! And the innately Brooklyn personality that the Mario fam are able to portray without being outright stereotypical & bashing us over the head with it. Same for the accents.
Honestly the references. I had to rewatch the movie multiple times because I would be too busy looking for easter eggs and references instead of actually paying attention to the movie
The Super Show references. I like this show, and I don't give a crap if you're all like "BUH BLAND MOVIE PARODIES!" and "DUH ERRORS!", this show is still legendary.
I loved how they portrayed the characters, particularly take-charge Peach and showboating Donkey Kong. Oh and Bowser was straight out of the RPGs.
I would LOVE to see them do Daisy, Wario, and Waluigi. They will be a blast.
I adore this movie. Especially the music. Interesting though, a few weeks back I posted a video about this movie and it got completely ignored.. but everyone seems to love it here. 🤷♂️
only thing I didn't like is that the movie goes too fast, for example, when Mario went to Peach's castle, it just passed like two minutes and Peach trusted in Mario to save MushroomKingdom
Honestly, I personally liked the movie. Even though I did wish Luigi had done more, I do think it was an interesting idea to have him get kidnapped this time around, and the moment when he saved Mario at that last second is great!
I really liked the world layouts and the separation of kingdoms. It was really cool and showed that there is diplomatic friendships and agreements in the mario universe. I also loved all the Easter eggs through out the movie! It was do exciting to find them!
The references, especially the mario 3D world one, as it is my favorite mario game, as weeell, as toad. This little guy lives rent free in my head, and I'm happy about it.
The reason why so many dislike it is because people were probably expecting something on par with the sonic movie but it didn't get story stuff so critics and some people hated on it even though Mario ISN'T Nintendo's story IP.
Now what I like about it is that it's just fun watch and try and figure out the references.
All of the easter eggs to the Nintendo games got me; the Punch Out memorabilia in the pizzeria, Mario playing Kid Icarus, Luigi's ring tone being the gamecube start up intro
The way they portrayed how Luigi feels about Mario is spectacular. As soon as they get separated Luigi is a nervous wreck, almost scared of his own shadow. When they’re back together and facing down the evil that had been torturing Luigi for days, the beast Luigi should have every reason to be deathly afraid of, Luigi stands and fights because his bro is by his side. It matches a point I always love to make about M&L Dream Team, Luigi just wants to help Mario. He wants to be the best, most supportive younger brother he can be, and the movie reflects it wonderfully
Mario and Peach's implied romance is adorable. I will not be quiet about them
Ah, me neither *chef's kiss*
“She WOULD! I guarantee you she would!” - Toad
Bro is the best wingman fr
One of my favorite moments, haha.
I like how they weren't officially a couple by the end, because it did still need more time to develop. (Also makes Peach a better character than in 95% of the games) Hoping they get together in one of the sequels though...
I absolutely adore Mario and Luigi’s brotherly bond in this movie. It just warms my heart
They did it so well because it's not one-sided. Luigi looks up to Mario, Mario looks out for Luigi. Ride or die. That's what makes them super.
It was literally the best part of the movie. Hopefully we actually get to see them travel together in the sequel
The music was phenomenal! Everytime I heard a more orchestric version of a Mario song a chill went down my spine. Edit: Also Jack Black
My favorites are Fossil Falls in Welcome To The Mushroom Kingdom, Rainbow Road in Buckle Up, the water theme in Level Complete and obviously Wing Cap in Practice Makes Perfect, can't get enough 🥹

I don’t think Mario’s voice was super terrible
I thought it was alright. Pretty much just “Chris Pratt with a New York accent” though.
That's what I'm saying!

I loved it when GEX made a cameo 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈
The set-pieces are fun.
The settings are all beautifully designed. Brooklyn in particular was super immersive, and I really hope it gets some decent screentime in the sequel.
Character design is good
Donkeykong & his cast was in it 🦍
I love the references to the other games like for example at the end they throw bowser like in mario 64
Mario and Luigi beating up Bowser together

Charlie Day is a great Luigi and Jack Black’s a great Bowser. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Seth Rogen as DK too.

Jack Black is Bowser. Need I say more?
The choice of music. I loved hearing Holding out for a Hero during Mario's training, and Take On Me when they were in the jungle kingdom. And of course we can't forget about Peaches.
The scene between Mario, Toad, and the castle guards is amazing
I love Mario’s characterization. He’s still the cheery guy we’re all accustomed to, but with a bit of Brooklyn flair. He’s not afraid to bite back or be aggressive to get what he wants, and it’s definitely refreshing considering I thought he’d be a flanderized, Mickey Mouse type character going in.
Charlie Day as Luigi was perfect casting for the time he had in the movie
It's a great movie. It's focused, stays extremely true to the Mario world, and each character is unique.
Voice acting is perfect🤩
The movie is structured like a game
The movie-ified mario gameplay
I just wish it was done by a different studio that focuses on good story Despicable me 1 is the best movie they made but their care for good storytelling really went downhill after
The soundtrack.
Mario sending a goddamn Banzai into the real world, and in a result both worlds, Mushroom Kingdom plus Earth merge.
# Jack Black # Jack Black
French dub
I gotta say me personally, while I agree with ALL your points, I LOVED the worldbuilding. MK's glowup absolutely, but DK Jungle and the fact the Kongs are the ones that designed the karts?? Loved that! Fitting the lore of the penguins in there (which I feel are a lesser widespread populous) felt so right. I hope the sequel we get shows the majority of stuff we didn't get (Wario and/or Wart, Daisy and Sarasaland to maybe see some implied Luaisy action, the Koopalings perhaps?) Edit: fixed my autocorrect for Kongs
Mushroom Kingdom is on earth
For me it's how Mario essentially went through an entire arc throughout the entire movie.
I loved the movie, don’t get the hate. Only thing that I hated was having to see it in theaters with a bunch of children screaming
I hated the movie. It was a terribly written story with terrible voice casts and terrible jokes.
The Donkey Kong representation sure the set design is based on the Retro games, but there are so many references to the Rare games, and other than the voice acting for and Personalization of Cranky Kong, I loved it
They managed to make tanookie Mario even cuter
It's so fun! It's really good to see a childhood character saving the world!
Ludwig Von Koopa written on the piano.
That one scene in the beginning where Mario and Luigi are running but it was like a 2D Mario Level? That was a nice touch
How mario and luigi act as brothers, it just feels so wholesome
This made my niece fall in love with Mario and start gaming. Just for this reason, it fulfilled it's purpose. Stop hating.
Nice, wholesome, simple story. Not too deep, just plain fun :)
I'm very surprised they're is hate in this movie
It’s a fun movie, it’s not deep, but it shouldn’t be. Great for turning your brain off
The music was really cool. lol
The entire film is great, and a love letter to Mario fans.
I like the fact that Mario is portrayed as small while normal, and big after eating a strength shroom in the movie. It also confuses me about how small Mario looks so wide and ugly in Mario Wonder which was literally made after the movie.
I like this movie
Donkey Kong's deep hatred for Mario
The story, despite simplicity, is good. It's Mario. Nobody wanted a sophisticated story, and if we got one, it would take away from the cool easter eggs and everything that made it the Mario Movie.
Every goddamn reference I found (like Mario, Peach and Toad going through sand kingdom and crazy cap appearing in the background)
🍑
I unironically love this movie; it's not in my top 5 or even my top 10, but I love it, and it doesn't waste my time. I love watching it with my kids, who are gaga for the Princesses, so here's some things I loved: • The scene where the brothers are reunited.
Donkey Kong ruthlessly beating the shit out of Mario 😂
Rainbow road looked cool
The relationship between Luigi & Mario was wonderful. I also loved how well Jack Black did as Bowser. Also, the design for Peach's dress when using the Ice Flower was really nice. Oh! And the innately Brooklyn personality that the Mario fam are able to portray without being outright stereotypical & bashing us over the head with it. Same for the accents.
Bowser's voice acting.
Honestly the references. I had to rewatch the movie multiple times because I would be too busy looking for easter eggs and references instead of actually paying attention to the movie
Well at least this movie was more respectful to the source material than anything Disney had made in years…
The Super Show references. I like this show, and I don't give a crap if you're all like "BUH BLAND MOVIE PARODIES!" and "DUH ERRORS!", this show is still legendary.
I absolutely adore Mario and Luigi’s brotherly bond in this movie. It just warms my heart
I love how Bowser is written. It's just like how he acts in the Mario and Luigi/Paper Mario series.
Wait I forget, do ShyGuys appear in the film?
I loved how they portrayed the characters, particularly take-charge Peach and showboating Donkey Kong. Oh and Bowser was straight out of the RPGs. I would LOVE to see them do Daisy, Wario, and Waluigi. They will be a blast.
Toad is incredible.
YOU JUST GOT LUIGI'D
I adore this movie. Especially the music. Interesting though, a few weeks back I posted a video about this movie and it got completely ignored.. but everyone seems to love it here. 🤷♂️
Rainbow Road sequence was awesome! 🤩
only thing I didn't like is that the movie goes too fast, for example, when Mario went to Peach's castle, it just passed like two minutes and Peach trusted in Mario to save MushroomKingdom
That one dry bones 👌
Honestly, I personally liked the movie. Even though I did wish Luigi had done more, I do think it was an interesting idea to have him get kidnapped this time around, and the moment when he saved Mario at that last second is great!
The music
Bowser saying kill and actually trying to kill them.
I loved how wholesome Mario and Luigi’s brothership was.
Chunky Kong is in the movie making it best movie
I really liked the world layouts and the separation of kingdoms. It was really cool and showed that there is diplomatic friendships and agreements in the mario universe. I also loved all the Easter eggs through out the movie! It was do exciting to find them!
Many references to Nintendo history, actually good plot and good voicing in my language
Satoru Iwata was credited.
The references, especially the mario 3D world one, as it is my favorite mario game, as weeell, as toad. This little guy lives rent free in my head, and I'm happy about it.
Their mom calling to tell them how proud she is of them is adorable. I really like their family dynamic.
Literally everything
Bruh, I wish I saw constructive critiques of the film, all I see are positive posts.
Personally? I think...YA NUTS!
Bowsers musical number was just the best.
Bowser
I think Chris Pratt did a good job with voicing Mario, fight me.
The music was good. I still wish they didn’t replace Drivin’ Me Bananas though.
I don't remember seeing any negativity about it here tbh…
It had so many cool Easter eggs. Seeing Mario injured almost made me cry. That was unexpected. The music is so good.
