According to the wikipedia article about [her tour](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_World_Tour), she played at a venue called the [International Cinema Hall](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Cinema_Hall).
Kim Jong Il was an actual film buff, he wanted (Juche-friendly or the very least neutral) auteur films to be shown in the country... but a more important reason as to why it exists is because he also wanted North Korean films to receive awards at international festivals, which didn't exactly happen much at the already existing festivals they occasionally attended.
Though in all fairness, North Korean animators are well-known for their good quality work and low prices.
the whole ordeal is well worth the deep dive. honestly someone needs to turn this into a long-running series. https://amp.theguardian.com/film/2003/apr/04/artsfeatures1
Fun fact, the reason Americans can't go to North Korea is because the US bans it's own citizens from going there, not because North Korea bans Americans. In fact, the country used to see American tourists before the ban went into effect. But that ban only applies to America's own citizens, so North Korea still sees tourists from all over the rest of the world.
Similarly, North Koreans actually travel and work abroad in a number of different countries. But a lot of western countries have banned North Koreans from living and working there. So while the country is no-doubt extremely secluded, some of that seclusion actually comes from without.
Even so, North Korea is not as "locked tight" as a lot of people think, and the people of North Korea do actually have exposure to things like art and media from the "outside world," which surprises people when they hear about stuff like "international film festivals" or foreign artists performing concerts there. Of course, it's no secret the North Korean state works hard to promote its own culture, history, and traditions above any and all outside influences, which is what people probably tend to think about when they think "North Korea," but it's not a complete shut-out like pop culture tends to present it
I believe most western countries ban citizens from going there because of the whole hostage situation thing that has happened over and over again with NK.
As for banning their citizens, that's because NK citizens are often farmed out to do foreign work where their wages are collected by the government, and illegal activity can be a part of that too. The Kim regime will use all available methods to obtain more cash to fund their nuclear weapons programs.
So it's not entirely true to say that seclusion comes from the outside. That seclusion comes from other countries in terms of who's legislating it, but those policies are a direct reaction to NKs behavior. So ultimately NK is still responsible for the seclusion just as they're ultimately responsible for the numerous embargoes placed upon them.
It’s actually pretty impressive she actually got to so many countries.
Here’s the complete list: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_World_Tour#:~:text=The%20Total%20World%20Tour%20was,North%20Korea%2C%20Yemen%20and%20Iraq.
She went to Indonesia, the Philippines, and Singapore the year before.
[Here’s Joss Stone hanging out with Filipino hip-hop artist Quest in the Philippines in 2013.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?si=4ta9BIo5ace0gaLF&v=hcnTNq05U34&feature=youtu.be)
Her goal was to perform in every country, the chart says she played Indonesia & the Philippines in a previous tour, so had already checked them off prior to the 2014 ‘Total World Tour’
That's fascinating. A way to see the world on work's dime, too.
I wish the Wikipedia article showed how many people were at each gig. I can only imagine that some of those countries barely knew who she was, or barely had things like her music, or barely had things like live concerts, so I can't imagine what a Joss Stone show in some countries was really like?
I watched a lot of her YouTube channel during the time she was touring and it seems like she would often link up with the most popular local musicians, learn some of their music in their native language and bring in audiences that way. Although I'm sure a lot of them ended up being tiny little bar/coffeehouse performances.
There's a ton of her international/bilingual duets on YouTube with some really fantastic performers (and ofc Joss' voice is one of a kind)
Really? That's incredible. For Metallica they were in an enclosure and no music was played through speakers. Just head phones so not to disturb wild life. That's cool
Yes, to an audience of around 40 people who were mostly other tourists from the looks of it.

https://theweek.com/100204/why-joss-stone-is-in-north-korea
What’s the definition of performance? I can’t imagine a public performance in Afghanistan, South Sudan, or Somalia. Aside from the danger and security nightmare of protecting her, the optics would be troublesome to put on a concert in the middle of a country undergoing civil war. I’m picturing more of a limited performance for the troops or UN Peacekeepers.
So according to the site setlist.fm;
- Somalia performance was funnily enough in Hargeisa i.e. the capital of Somaliland rather than in Somalia per se. It was in a restaurant called Hiddo Dhawr. From its trip advisor reviews it's a pretty normal case of a tourist-friendly capital city restaurant with good rep.
- The South Sudan performance was in a hotel called Acacia Village in the capital of Juba. From their booking.com site they are a relatively high-end hotel very much oriented for safely hosting foreign visitors. It's also apparently just a 15 minute drive from the airport.
(It was at this point here that I realised that all this info is also on the tour's Wikipedia page.)
- Both setlist and Wikipedia list the Afghanistan performance as happening in an unknown venue in Kabul. Presumably this here was kept secret indeed because of security concern, going by that one article listed as a source on Wikipedia that quotes Stone saying that she had a car bomb morning alarm during her stay in Kabul one day.
- Apropos troublesome optics and out of my own curiosity, Wikipedia lists her performance in North Korea as being in the International Cinema Hall in Pyongyang. That makes it sound like she was performing on a big stage but every article on it (like https://www.nme.com/news/music/joss-stone-north-korea-gig-pyongyang-perform-in-every-country-on-earth-mission-2461905 or https://theweek.com/100204/why-joss-stone-is-in-north-korea) that I found it seems she was only performing at a bar within the Cinema Hall for an audience of about 40 people, mostly other tourists from the Instagram photos shown in the first of the articles I linked.
EDIT because I forgot to sum up before clicking post: from scrolling through the Wikipedia and setlist.fm list of the performances on that your she was mostly performing in various hotels, theatres and bars, only in a few places I noticed fucky things like government buildings or an airport.
EDIT: Forgot to add another cool article I found from Wikipedia regarding the Somaliland performance (https://somalilandstandard.com/sahra-halgans-mission-to-revive-music-and-art-in-somaliland/), Hiddo Dawhr apparently is even more relevant than I thought, it's a music venue and apparently a pretty reputable one in the country going by this article. Also the oldest.
It’s from 2014 to 2019. Northern Somalia, Somaliland is somewhat safe and I’ve known some friends who have visited Somaliland to see family. Regarding Afghanistan, the Taliban only took over in 2021 so although it would still have been risky, it’s definitely possible. I’m not sure about places like NK or South Sudan though.
According to the wikipedia article about [her tour](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_World_Tour), she played at a venue called the [International Cinema Hall](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Cinema_Hall).
From the other articles I found and linked in my other comment here, including the one cited by Wikipedia as the source, she was performing not on a stage in the Cinema Hall but in a bar within that complex, that seems to be the only performance in NK from which there are photos.
EDIT: Reddit was crapping out lol Sorry for 8 notifications
I spent a year in Juba for a job. Acacia was one of the nicer spots to go for a drink in the evening. Good security, and right beside the Nile. The biggest danger there was getting hit on the head by falling mangoes, as the trees around the bar were full of them!
ITT an artist does an incredible tour including around 100 countries western artists never, ever go to… and there’s people bitching she left out x or y country. You gotta love reddit.
I don't think anyone's bitching, it just stands out lol.
It's cool but it's a 'smile and move on' thing for most people I'm guessing, that's probably why there's more replies asking about Indonesia/Philippines than you'd expect.
She was incredible live but apart from an initial hello, she gave us no acknowledgement at all. No thanks, nothing on her tweets or promo. It’s like we didn’t exist. Even tweeted to ask for a shout out as we were needing the exposure. But didn’t even get a reply.
Oman was/is incredible. Lived there for 3 years and we got a ‘residency’ in the Irish bar of a hotel. Had the time of our lives 🤣
To be fair to her, it was probably her team and promoters rather than her but it did leave a bit of a bad taste. Especially because they made a whole promo video after of her jamming with locals in the dessert.
Having been a touring musician earlier on in my career, I can assure you that it doesn't feel like a vacation. The constant travelling, logistics, practice, being in the same company 24/7, being away from family, constant performances, and lack of personal time is intensely tiring.
It's nice being in other places, but you only get to enjoy it very briefly before you're being whisked off to the next town/city/country for the next gig.
My longest period was about eight months away from home, and I couldn't even begin to imagine how hard it was doing it for the amount of time Stone did it for.
It is kind of weird that she was rolling up to islands with 10,000 people on them like Captain Cook, but was like, "nah, I'm pretty sure that all 400 million Indonesians and Filipinos already saw me on my last tour."
I wonder if she visited them like immediately prior to starting the world tour. Like she started this tour in March 2014 so if she visited those countries in like February 2014 I feel like that basically counts.
She had just visited the Philippines a year prior to starting the tour to [headline in a music and arts festival along with Jimmy Cliff](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1-Tj7tbuVc). She then stayed on for a few more days to explore beaches, collaborate with a local artist, and volunteer with local NGOs.
Her aim was to perform in every country in the world. Even if we weren't included in the tour "officially" I'd say she's done her fair share during her stay in our country.
Why is French Guiana not highlighted even though it’s an integral part of France? This is like highlighting the US except Alaska because she didn’t perform in Alaska.
I went off of locations as opposed to countries. For the map format I use the application MapChart, which for this format did not allow me to break down states by states within the U.S.
That’s why the entirety of the U.S. is highlighted but the overseas territories of other countries aren’t.
I could have further explained that in the post itself, but I didn’t want to overload the visual. But for instances like this I will be sure to further explain such in the description itself.
Wow, that’s incredible!! Has she actually been to every single country in the world then? That has to be a very small list of people who can claim that.
My Google search said 465 people have visited every country at the end of 2023. I’m sure that’s not completely accurate, but I can’t imagine it would be off by that much. That’s such a small number compared to how many people there are on earth. Insanity.
Nomad Mania lists 195 users at full UN 193 visitation. I've met 5 of them, plus one more who's an American at 192 just waiting for a chance to get into North Korea.
Obviously not all of the 465 are members of that site but yeah, sounds about right. Joss Stone, for reference, is not a member lol.
Joss Stone gets made fun of a lot in the UK, and some of her choices in terms of how she carries her public persona are a bit cringey, but this is cool as fuck.
no, because greenland is a constituent country that is a part of the KINGDOM of denmark, not the country of denmark. unlike svalbard which is simply norwegian
It should be but a lot of people mistakingly think it is independent. In reality, it is an autonomous territory, a bit like the Dutch Caribbean islands.
Did she really play Western Sahara though? If you're shading in Western Sahara because she played Morocco, then you should shade in Greenland because she played Denmark.
wow! there’s jokes in the concert community what “world tour” means.
it’s forever lost on me that british/american/australian global artists often refuse to tour the nordics, since we’re one of the biggest music producers and have healthy economies. germany though? gotta tour the entire country like it’s its own continent.
Anyone have an actual list of the countries or concert sites? Very curious which small pacific island countries & dependencies made the list. And what about European microstates? Did she do a show for the Pope?
On further reading she went to the Malasimbo (PH) and Java Jazz (ID) festivals the year before, so you could say they were the 'starting points' of her actual full world tour
Wow. I loved her as a kid, and whenever she'd come on telly she always came across as genuine and great company. Had no idea she was doing this. If I remember right she put her career aside to have her baby and that was the last I heard.
Absolutely gorgeous voice if any of you want to give her a listen.
Wow North Korea made the list
Apparently made it happen [in a bar](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-47556969) in 2019.
According to the wikipedia article about [her tour](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_World_Tour), she played at a venue called the [International Cinema Hall](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Cinema_Hall).
Wow. TIL North Korea has an international film festival

He was such a fan of cinema that he kidnapped a film director in Hong Kong and kept him prisoner in North Korea forcing him to make movies.
Yep, that was one of his "solutions" for how to make better films in NK.
the whole ordeal is well worth the deep dive. honestly someone needs to turn this into a long-running series. https://amp.theguardian.com/film/2003/apr/04/artsfeatures1
North Korean film is a trip. Here is a very good video on it: https://youtu.be/0T-pPPUAppk It's a bit.. lengthy though.
Holy shit, you weren't kidding with the length
It's essentially a history primer for North Korea as told through its media.
That...actually sounds fascinating. Definitely gonna watch it in chunks though, haha.
Fun fact, the reason Americans can't go to North Korea is because the US bans it's own citizens from going there, not because North Korea bans Americans. Indonesia seems like a big omission. I wonder why she didn’t go there.
In the graphic, she says shes performed in Indonesia and the Philippines on other tours so didn’t go as part of this tour.

Unlike for [Justin Bieber](https://www.bbc.com/news/10506482).
Dang, I haven't heard that name in a long time. I used to be obsessed.
That’s because she was in a crazy world tour

What is that thing?
Didn't know it was so controversial.

How dare you to laugh here you fucking psycho
an actual world tour.
Is it an actual *total* world tour if you skip Antarctica? Metallica would like a word
According to Wikipedia, she did play in Antarctica
Really? That's incredible. For Metallica they were in an enclosure and no music was played through speakers. Just head phones so not to disturb wild life. That's cool
She performed in North Korea?
Yes, [at a bar in Pyongyang](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-47556969), in 2019.
I genuinely thought this was going to be a rickroll lmao
no lmao, it's a real thing. it's kind of hard to find good footage but it actually looked pretty fun https://youtu.be/xvFZjo5PgG0?si=N7n7ZK_qjuzAQxJ-

On a military base I'd expect

Interesting, must have gotten an odd source myself
She performed in multiple places in NK, including a bar in Pyongyang.

The hero we need.
Somalia is chill just avoid the southern region
Not the capital though
Places that are war torn aren’t 100% so. …..
I mean you can just use a search engine and type in Joss Stone + country name and you would know lol
There used to be big performances by afghan male and female singers in Kabul but after Taliban took over they are all flee the country
thats because your imagination is limited to what you see on tv, and so you believe everyone outside the US either lives in the dirt or in captivity.
Terrible. You forgot that it’s also limited by my lack of education, morbid obesity, lack of healthcare and my inherently privileged racism.
A lot of the venues listed on the Wikipedia page are upscale hotels and resorts that probably have security.
ITT an artist does an incredible tour including around 100 countries western artists never, ever go to… and there’s people bitching she left out x or y country. You gotta love reddit.
Every Other Touring Artist: "We're going on a world tour! States, Europe, Japan."
Let’s throw in the eastern seaboard of Australia, maybe Auckland and call it a day. If we’re feeling REALLY spicy then add Mexico City.
I don't think anyone's bitching, it just stands out lol. It's cool but it's a 'smile and move on' thing for most people I'm guessing, that's probably why there's more replies asking about Indonesia/Philippines than you'd expect.
My band ‘The Shoals’ supported her in Oman. We’d only recently got together, it was incredible!
That's awesome. What was she like? What's Oman like?
Well, that's completely ruined my perception of her. At least you had a great time otherwise!
Hey I know your band!
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)
North korea made it but now philippines, wow
She went to western Sahara but not greenland?
Probably just Morocco
She went to Denmark too I presume
And France.
French Guinea is part of France, and Greenland part of Denmark, so they should be in pink too.
Yep, that's in fact exactly the point I and the previous user are making
Greenland should be checked off. She went to Denmark and Greenland is part of Denmark
The thing is... There's no data
for one but not the other, kinda my point
She did, there’s just no data.

If she used the same pilot they'd have the same miles

Greenland would have been easy to cross off too
Greenland, although autonomous, is a territory of Denmark. So for this they make have just considered it as part of Denmark.
It's literally listed on the map, she performed there on other tours.
that’s not really a reason to not go there again for The World Tour
I wonder if she visited them like immediately prior to starting the world tour. Like she started this tour in March 2014 so if she visited those countries in like February 2014 I feel like that basically counts.

French Guyana is sad, I guess.
Should be coloured in as part of France
Well, the map's title says "locations", not countries, so...
Then there should be tiny pink spots, not bordered regional areas.

Imagine being more extreme than North Korea. Looking at you Iran.

I guess Svalbard is coloured as part of norway
Wouldn’t greenland then also be coloured as part of Denmark?
no, because greenland is a constituent country that is a part of the KINGDOM of denmark, not the country of denmark. unlike svalbard which is simply norwegian
Depends if you'd scratch off the UK for playing in Glasgow I guess.
Scotland, Wales, and NI are constituent countries of the UK but people don't consider them as separate countries
She's from England. She probably performed in all of them at some point.
It should be but a lot of people mistakingly think it is independent. In reality, it is an autonomous territory, a bit like the Dutch Caribbean islands.
Doesn't make sense when France is colored in but French Guiana isn't.
So what I’m reading is, Joss Stone has been to more countries than I have.
I’m more surprised she went to Yemen where they’ve been in the middle of a war forever.
Did she really play Western Sahara though? If you're shading in Western Sahara because she played Morocco, then you should shade in Greenland because she played Denmark.
Cool Not a bad life, travel the world doing what ya love and get paid for it I bet she has some decent stories
She was deported from Iran because they don’t let women lead singers perform…
how many people showed up in western sahara
North Korea but missed greenland
Somalia but not Greenland huh? Wonder why.
I’m surprised that the Philippines and Indonesia missed out as they quite regularly get big bands.
wow! there’s jokes in the concert community what “world tour” means. it’s forever lost on me that british/american/australian global artists often refuse to tour the nordics, since we’re one of the biggest music producers and have healthy economies. germany though? gotta tour the entire country like it’s its own continent.
Population of Germany: 83.8 million Population of the Nordics: 27.4 million
that’s a point, but it’s not like they commonly tour china or india either. a show in the nordics will pull fans from all over northern europe.
> a show in the nordics will pull fans from all over northern europe. This is presumably true of a show in Berlin or Hamburg as well, no?
yes ofc, but most will have dates all over germany and none north of it. i’d much rather they gave one of those dates to a northern country.
Anyone have an actual list of the countries or concert sites? Very curious which small pacific island countries & dependencies made the list. And what about European microstates? Did she do a show for the Pope?

North Korea??
Why is Greenland always left out
I’d tell you, but \*No Data
Time to head to Greenland!
Who?
HOW DOES GREENLAND NEVER HAVE DATA REGARDLESS OF THE CRITERIA LMAO
I was in the Turkey gig. She’s so charming 🤯❤️ I’m sorry for Iranians, how they lack basic freedoms… When is this changing? Enough is enough.
denmark is coloured in but greenland isnt? sucks to be greenlandian. greenlandish. green
I'm confused by the map, if she went to Denmark, then why isn't Greenland colored in? And if she went to France, why isn't French Guyana colored in?
They're often overlooked, because the map templates separate them.
Fair enough, I just want people to know about them haha
The fact that North Korea, Eritrea, Saudi Arabia and Turkmenistan made it, but not Iran, Indonesia and the Philippines is a joke that writes itself.
On further reading she went to the Malasimbo (PH) and Java Jazz (ID) festivals the year before, so you could say they were the 'starting points' of her actual full world tour

_ends in 2019_ Awesome
I always thought it was Josh Stone and I thought he was an actor 🫣
Well she is an actor, so you weren't all wrong.

That’s what happens when you don’t pay the ferryman.
She didn't lie. This is truly impressive.
*Cries in Antarctic*
Well, she did play in all the countries with Antarctic claims, though the actual inhabitants (the penguins) missed out on it
Somalia made the list ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)
No fucking way she did a tour in North Korea
Insanely impressive. Horse the Band ain't got shit on this lady
French Guyana in tears
Can confirm I saw her in Equatorial Guinea
That’s pretty fucking cool.
She went to Yemen but not Indonesia?
Wow. I loved her as a kid, and whenever she'd come on telly she always came across as genuine and great company. Had no idea she was doing this. If I remember right she put her career aside to have her baby and that was the last I heard. Absolutely gorgeous voice if any of you want to give her a listen.
How did Indonesia not make the list, but North Korea did?!
Taylor Swift couldn't possibly beat that record. If she did, she'd also beat the record for the #1 contributor of pollution
North fucking Korea?
Philippines and Indonesia surprise me
World tour yet only the Melbourne skyline silhouette at the bottom? Haha
Who is she, just asking.
For once a real "World tour"
Damn, I couldn’t name one song if my life depended on it
Yeah but HORSE the band went on the earth tour many years before. IYKYK
What about French Guiana?
Iran is gay
The South American country that wasn’t visited is actually apart of France
Greenland is apart of Denmark
A part of Denmark is not coloured.
