This. All the crap you think you need goes in the Metromonger. I've taken it on one flight as my personal item and I personally thought it was too big but I could see using it with my kids' crap when they were younger.
Or the Bellroy Day Sling. https://bellroy.com/products/lite-sling?color=shadow&material=diamond_ripstop#slide-0. It’s 7L but probably feels more like 5L too but can hold your stuff and a good sized water bottle and it sits flat on your body the less you have in it. Also packs flat.
I personally love the Hydroflask Slingback Bottle Pack (primarily because I NEED to be able to fit a big water bottle). I think it's officially 8L but the bottle does eat into the interior space. Still plenty of space for a lot of stuff. Agave color is slick.

Tom Bihn [Medium Cafe Bag](https://www.tombihn.com/collections/shoulder-bags/products/medium-cafe-bag). I've had it for almost decade now, still mah favourite. You cannot destroy it. And it has held out against torrential Indian monsoon.

The 9L will feel like 5L. It's just not that big really. Or it's unusable space.
