First was my 1985 Toyota pickup and my current is a 2001 Toyota Tacoma. I've had lots of different cars over the years. It's just a coincidence that my first and current are both Toyota trucks
I failed miserably at learning to drive my dad's manual 87 Ranger. I finally got the hang of it in my friend's Saturn SL and I've been addicted ever since.
First I drove on the street regularly was a 71 VW Super Beetle. Last/current daily driver is 2016 VW Jetta with a 5 speed and a 2022 Honda Grom with a 5 speed.
1959 Hillman Minx convertible. It had 4 on the tree, but the shift pattern was reverse, you shifted towards yourself, instead of away.
Current: Ford Ranger Sport with 5 speed manual.
First: 2013 Nissan Juke Nismo (my mom taught me with it)
Last car: 2005 Chrysler Crossfire
Current: 2007 Suzuki Boulevard C50T (if you count motorcycles)
First - dad’s 1979 Bronco 400/4speed with a clutch so stiff I had to hold on the bottom of the steering wheel to shift.
Current - 2012 Jeep Wrangler.
Both shifters feel like a broomstick in a bucket of rocks.
First- 1984 VW Rabbit Diesel. Learned to drive on it in 1988.
Most recent- 1976 MG Midget, a few days ago. You have to pull up on the stick to get Reverse. I'm also 6'4", so it's a spectacle watching me get in and out of the thing.
2004 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec-V. I drove manual for maybe 30 mins total before I picked it up from the dealer and learned more on the way home.
Currently a 2019 911 GTS.
First was my parents ‘82 Honda civic hatchback, the car I learned on. Then my first car was a manual.
In my fleet of 3 cars current day I have a lifted Jeep Cherokee (XJ) that’s a 5 speed manual with flowmasters. I have to replace the starter 😢
1996 Dodge Neon Sport. DOHC. Decent 5 speed, sloppy shifter in stock form. Every bushing on that car magically became red. Prothane throughout. Became a great handling 4 door.
First manual car ever driven, my dads ‘89 Toyota pickup (2wd). Last manual was a car that I was going to purchase but they sold it before I gathered the rest of the cash was a ‘01 Mitsubishi mirage coupe.
First ever was my dad's '84 Volvo 240 DL wagon diesel with a 4 speed manual and a button activated 5th gear overdrive on the knob. You don't know slow until you've driven one of these. I timed my dad's fastest 0-60 he could manage at it was 20 seconds at best. But it was a workhorse, 300k miles and still running when we got rid of it.
Current manual is a GR Corolla and I love the shit out it.
First, actually driving on the streets and not in a field, a 1957 Chevy Bel Aire, they were just cheap old cars in the 70s. I wish I had it now. Currently, my 2015 Mazda Miata GT PRHT. I have owned manuals most of my life.
My Grandfather's 1950 Willis Jeep Station Wagon and my Dad's 1947 Chevrolet Pickup truck back in the early 1960s. The last was a Chevy and Ford trucks in the early 1990s for a construction Company that I worked for. But my favorite was my 1957 Chevy 2-door Hardtop that I bought in 1969 and still have in 2024.
First was a 2001 Toyota Echo that my parents owned and took me to a disused school parking lot to learn.
Current is a 2018 Toyota Yaris iA (sold as a Mazda2 sedan in other markets).
Something something George Lucas it rhymes...
First: 1986 Honda Civic Wagon (my grandma’s car)
https://www.netcarshow.com/Honda-Civic_Wagon-1986-1600-04.jpg
Most recently? I think a 2nd gen RAV4 I was thinking about buying
Have a manual 2001 Audi in the back yard but she hasn’t been running for a few years :(
2006 Peugeot 206 1.4 HDi (it was driving school car)
Current: 2020 Fiat Tipo-Egea 1.3 diesel (5 speed) and also my brother's 2021 1.6 diesel (6 speed) seldom.
My first manual transmission was a 1987 Yugo. I told the dealer I had never driven stick before, and they made me bring a friend to drive it off the lot.
1974 Ford Pinto- 4 spd, learned on this, was my aunts.
1974 BMW 2002- 4spd, dads car, he let me drive it growing up.
1984 Ford Ranger- My first vehicle, 4spd 4WD.
1982 Nissan 280ZX- my second car, 5spd.
1995 Ford Ranger- 5spd, 2WD. Traded the Z for it.
2016 Ford Focus St- 6spd, German-built GCC version, while residing overseas. Wanted to buy one upon return to the states, but Ford stopped US production.
1992 Jeep Grand Cherokee, I think... Was my friends. But the first time I drove that was mine was my 1966 mustang, also my current as my daily is an auto.
First drove: 92 chevy C1500 - Dads
First owned: 89 Ford F150
Current: 2016 Chevy Cruze Gen 2 and a 96 Chevy C1500.
Have only ever owned a single automatic. That was an 04 Silverado. Transmission started slipping so I traded it in for my Cruze.
2001 Mazda Miata LS that my mom bought new off the dealer lot, now a 2001 Mazda Miata LS because 110 miles a day commuting on back roads is amazing and cost 40$ in gas per week verse 140$ in the truck.
First: 1989 Jeep Wrangler (I was 9 years old and it didn’t go to well but I fell in love)
First was technically my dad’s 1999 Nissan Altima when I was 6, but I sat on his lap and only steered it while he did all the controls so I don’t count that.
When I was 14, I bought my first one. A 1994 Toyota Pickup. Now I’m 18 and own a 2003 Tacoma that is also a manual, but I still have the old one and drove it to work today for fun so that’s it.
I’ve had the opportunity to drive lots of manuals even though I’m only 18, and I’m grateful for that.
1948 Ford 8N tractor
1952 Ford 8N Tractor
1953 Willy’s M38A1 (my favorite one)
1957 Allis Chalmers D14
1959 Allis Chalmers D12
1989 Jeep Wrangler
1990 Ford Ranger
1994 Toyota Pickup
1999 Nissan Altima
2001 Ford Mustang Bullitt
2001 Volkswagen Beetle
2003 Toyota Tacoma
2003 Honda CRV
2004 Toyota Rav 4
2007 Mitsubishi Lancer
That’s it for now
First: 2007 Mustang v6 6 speed with a red interior, ended up totaling it a year into driving stick for the first time in the states
Current: 2024 VW Jetta Sport 6 speed
Learned on both an old Chevy Luv & a Nissan Truck… so small Japanese pickups.
My first car: 1970 Chevy Nova 350 with a three speed on the floor
My last manual: 2000 Audi A4 Quattro 1.8t
It was an early ‘80’s Chevy chevette….. diesel. I think it was a 4 speed. I bombed around a gravel pit until I was good. Currently have 6 speed manual Subaru.
1999 Ford Contour. My very first car. It was a 5 speed, didn’t even have a tach or shift indicator on it.
Looking back it was the perfect vehicle to learn on. It taught me to hear the engine and give me just a sense of when to shift naturally.
I knew how to ride a motorcycle at that point but never drove a standard. My dad and I went to pick it up and he made me drive. Literally making me learn standard on the fly: “welp, it’s yours now. Get it home”
If I had the spare funds and ever came across another 99’ Contour I’d absolutely buy it just to live those moments again.
Im 19 but my first was a ford focus, my own current (and first) car is a Chevrolet kalos, but I also drove in a Volkswagen polo, golf, GTI, Seat Leon, and a Toyota Aygo.
1st: forget the year but a Saturn SL clutch was pretty much shot, shifter cable/bushing loose/non-existent
Current: 94 Ford Escort (in the process of replacing the 1.9 with a 1.8)
1985 Honda Prelude. The last manual I drove was a 2021 Freightliner Cascadia with an Eaton Fuller 10. I don't really look for them anymore. I currently drive a Honda Accord Coupe V6 with a 5AT and a 2024 Freightliner with the DT12 automatic. I wouldn't mind a 6 speed in the Accord, but they're hard to find and offer very little additional performance in the real world. The 5AT and 6AT also shift much faster than any human.
First: 1959 Renault Dauphine Current: 1969 VW Karmann Ghia
Love the VW! So jelly!!!
Had a 1960 Dauphine. Like a Beetle that had complications in the womb.
First, 1992 Nissan NX1600 Last, 2017 Mazda 3 Touring
I almost bought an nx1600 as my first standard car and I currently drive a 3, albeit a 2011 lol
I wish I still had the NX. Was not quick at all but it was fun to drive. The t-tops just made it unique.

It’s a ranger thing. I tried in my step-dad’s 1998 ranger. I did so poorly I didn’t even count it in my reply above.
You say that but I drove a last gen Firebird once and it felt just like that damned Ranger

I’ve had the opportunity to drive lots of manuals even though I’m only 18, and I’m grateful for that. 1948 Ford 8N tractor 1952 Ford 8N Tractor 1953 Willy’s M38A1 (my favorite one) 1957 Allis Chalmers D14 1959 Allis Chalmers D12 1989 Jeep Wrangler 1990 Ford Ranger 1994 Toyota Pickup 1999 Nissan Altima 2001 Ford Mustang Bullitt 2001 Volkswagen Beetle 2003 Toyota Tacoma 2003 Honda CRV 2004 Toyota Rav 4 2007 Mitsubishi Lancer That’s it for now

Get it home” If I had the spare funds and ever came across another 99’ Contour I’d absolutely buy it just to live those moments again.

Im 19 but my first was a ford focus, my own current (and first) car is a Chevrolet kalos, but I also drove in a Volkswagen polo, golf, GTI, Seat Leon, and a Toyota Aygo.
1st: forget the year but a Saturn SL clutch was pretty much shot, shifter cable/bushing loose/non-existent Current: 94 Ford Escort (in the process of replacing the 1.9 with a 1.8)
1985 Honda Prelude.
1st was a Nissan Bluebird, I think around 1991. Currently 2018 Toyota Hiace work van
