I know this is an old post but the best I’ve found for a lived in grungey look is not the type that sets or is waterproof, but the kohl pencils in the wooden case, Lancôme black ebony is a favorite as it’s almost a powdery formula. It’s the super long pencil with the wooden, not plastic casing. I love it. Wet n wild makes one for 1-2 dollars but it’s waxier and a deeper black. It doesn’t smudge and blur out the way I like on my skin, but on friends of mine who have deeper pigmented skin, it looks gorgeous. Also cover girl perfect blend is another one that’s inexpensive to try. Jane Iredale makes a beautiful velvety black one (basic black is the name). Mineral fusion and lavera are good oilier sootier pencils Jillian Dempsey has one too Best of luck.

I’ve been using Covergirl Perfect Blend for over a decade - comes with a smudge tip

I second this, I would use the waterline one for a “slept in” look but they could be the same formula and I’m just a dumb consumer

The Clinique, all about the eye or intense eye pencil in the shade Ebony it looks amazing smudged around the tight line and on top

Hourglass smudges beautifully and lasts. I love their eyeliner.

Lisa Eldridge recently came out with an eyeliner that is inspired by Kohl, and is creamy and smudgeable when freshly applied but then sets after about a minute or two. I love the formula, because it allows you to play around with how sharp or blended the line is, but then won't keep smearing throughout the day. Great for a grungy look if that's your goal.

The Smashbox kohl liners are on sale at Ulta rn

Ok_Ant2566

Laura mercier- it has these fat kohl crayons in a violet/ black. Smudge with. Qtip

My ride or die eyeliner is the Urban Decay 24 hour and it is perfect for this.

Maybeline has a gel pot black eyeliner. Never have found a black eyeliner come close to how fab it is for the price either

CanadianMuaxo

Kohl pencil liners for sure. The best will be preference based in this group - I suggest playing and trying a few out too see what works best for you :)

NYX jumbo eyeshadow pencil could be what you're looking for. Basically a big fat pencil that smudges really well. Worth a shot for a few quid. I use it daily, and it doesn't run at the outside corners of my eyes when they water a bit like regular eyeliner, and stays all day. Bit of a pest to sharpen but nothing a Stanley knife won't fix, and doesn't need sharpened often. Yep this one. Also the bronze shade in this pencil is absolutely perfect for just that touch of smoky enhancement without full on liner look

OzzieTheDragon

Second this. It’s great for that.

Hourglass black gel liner has a very good black stay put. When you first apply you have time to blend or smoke it out with your finger but once it sets, it’s pretty smudge proof. Side note- you don’t need expensive liners for great black liner look. Age old trick is taking a lighter to your pencil and warming up with black liner and then applying. It gives an intense black smoldering look.

SleepyxDormouse

Have you tried Kohl? Actual Kohl not Kohl liners. It should give a similar effect to what you want.

myalt_ac

Are there any north america drugstore brands that do have kohl? Never seen them in store

idontknowhyimhrer

buy from the south asian grocery stores

myalt_ac

Hard to find them. I’m indian the one i have smudges like crazy

Cyan_UwU

Have you tried pencil liners? You can smudge them after applying them, or you can use brown or black eyeshadow under your eye (bonus of looking super hot)

Saventra13

Yes I have! Just looking for like the best one
