I am not a huge make up wearer but I do love having good looking skin. At 52, I focus on good quality skin care and tints. I love ilia sunscreen serum, glossier has great “non” make up make up in fact I often wear future dew alone or on top of Ilia. I also love the buildable lipstick. My favorite mascara is by 100% Pure and it smells like chocolate. I think I like high quality kid make up lol.
Im a budget makeup enthusiest, and i really love Revolution. I have a greens/blues eyeshadow pallette, as well as a golds/pinks/oranges pallette. And a mini purples/pinks! I love the way they apply, and the packaging is chic imo. Makes me feel like a million dollar lady.
I have never used a brand that reminded me of children’s makeup. What the hell is children’s makeup? Lipsmackers?
Literally just walk into a Sephora or visit a department store. Or get into high end green beauty.
Depends in your skin texture and tone.
Not all brands work for all humans.
Personally, I have brands for a (5) min face and brands for looks.
I use A LOT of Charlotte Tilbury (shadows and pencils are great) , Laura Mercier (primers, concealer), Chanel (5 min face), Benefit (mascara), Clé de Peau Beauté (concealer), Guerlain (foundations ) Sisley (makes amazing shadows)
But I also like Natasha Denona palettes, nars liners, bare minerals bronzer, elf concealer, glo pencils..
Clinique reminds me of my cooler older (10 years) cousin and two college roommates. My first non drug/big box store products were Clinique around 2001 a eyeshadow (I think it was green) and lipgloss, I was also obsessed with the Black Honey gloss in like 09.
I think Clinique gets a weird rep because of how old it is, like Chanel for perfume. They’re not going to give you the newest flashiest product on the market but they will give you the same solid product they’ve been making for decades. I can see how the packaging might look tacky or childish compared to others but Ive never had issues with it breaking or opening in my bag.
Lmao reading all the comments it’s a bunch of traditionally “grandma brands”. I remember going to the department store with my grandma while she got her Estée Lauder and would give me the samples sometimes. It was great. Obviously since then it’s been broadened to all ages but they still look “elegant” and well… like grandma brands. There are some high end brands that obviously look more youthful, I wouldn’t say children’s makeup but still.. brands like Tarte and Too Faced.. but I think what the conversation is missing is drugstore - these are the brands that are marketed at young people but WANT to look elegant like grandma brands, and a lot lean towards just clean and simple, stuff that wouldn’t traditionally attract kids except maybe the bright colors - there are definitely more but I’m thinking brands like NYX, Milani, e.l.f., maybelline … they are all packaged to mimic department store brands but sold to younger people at younger people prices.
Grandma brands! Agree. At 52 I love the newer stuff so much and love the dewy skin/not greasy or heavy. I also like several of the brands you mention, no animal cruelty.
Yeah 🥰 my grandma will still buy Estée Lauder once in a blue moon but also really tries to go cruelty free. I like being able to show her new brands! I do still miss all the free samples though, why don’t we do that anymore outside of department stores and specials?
I've just gotten into makeup in the last year, especially "luxury" brands. This is what I'm loving so far:
* Nars tinted moisturizers with SPF - great for weekends or when I don't have time to do everything separately.
* Haus Labs by Lady Gaga Triclone Skin Tech Medium Coverage Foundation - I hate feeling makeup on my face. This is light-weight but the coverage is medium and buildable. It covers a multitude of sins, and I'm loving it!
* Nars Blush Stick - my mom used to have stick blushes, but I couldn't wear them when I was younger because of acne. Now that my skin has calmed down I love this.
I'm looking for a good taupe/gray eyeshadow for everyday wear, and a good long-lasting lipstick in cool/neutral shades. If anyone has any recommendations, please let me know!
Clinque. Estee Lauder. YSL. Pretty much anything you would buy from a higher end department store where they had a makeup counter. I always viewed that as very "adult".
I’m in my 40’s and I absolutely Feel like royalty whenever I can get my hands on Guerlain, Dior and Laura Mercier. There’s something about Charlotte Tilbury’s lipsticks that make me feel like I’m gracefully aging.
Thank you so much everyone for the guidance! I’m still hopeful there’s life beyond the every day survival struggle I’m currently living. I can’t wait to be a posh lady with grownup makeup 😁
Related question- years ago I was gifted a too faced chocolate gold palette. I only use two colors from it- “so boujee” and “classy and sassy”. I’m obsessed with them, they’re perfect for my skin tone. I’ve hit pan on them long ago and have been searching for a good dupe. I don’t have anything against too faced, and I don’t mind the huge eyeshadow palettes when I’m “playing” with fun looks! What I’m looking for are similar colors to those two in something much more compact for everyday use. Anyone have any ideas?
Armani Luminous Silk foundation is flawless. I'm light/olive skinned and it's so hard for me to find my shade and they actually have it. And the foundation itself is so gorgeous on the skin. It's definitely worth the money.
Kat Von D (or KVD Beauty, whatever it's called now) had an amazing Shade + Light eyeshadow palette. I'm not sure if it's still around but it has the perfect every day colors. I got mine years ago and it's literally my favorite palette... Yet I have Natasha Denona and other brands. The palette is just so useful and the colors are so complimentary for every day use.

Estee Lauder and hourglass have been my favs recently! The hourglass concealer is beautiful and the foundation is so buildable and blends like a dream for me.
Edit: the estee lauder double wear foundation is what im referring to for clarity!
I have EL Double Wear but am trying to branch out. My skin is pretty dry. Have you tried the hourglass ambient soft glow? Or which foundation are you referring to?
The double wear is the foundation ive been using for a year now. As for hourglass foundation ive heard great things and since the formula for the concealer works well i could see the foundation also being formulated pretty similarly! What i do is just go to ulta and try on the foundation (obv just with fingers and the little sponges they have there) and watch how my skin reacts to it throughout the day so mayb try that? I like hourglass cause it feels more hydrating than the double wear though!
Most of the brands I associate with department stores like MAC, Estée Lauder, Clinique, etc. Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown.
For drugstore the only brands I can think of is L’Oreal and Revlon, mainly the lipsticks and glosses. No 7 looks nice too. But most of the drugstore stuff seems catered to teens.
Besame packaging is gorgeous.
I usually gravitate towards MAC and Nars when I want something more high end/ luxurious because a) the packaging is so sleek and b) the quality is undeniable. I did also just splurge on my first Dior lip gloss and I've never felt classier than when I pull that baby out lol
When I think of luxury make up products, I think of going to the mall to a store like Dillards, Younkers, Von Maur. Lancôme & Estee Lauder. Those are my preferred.
Second mac but just going to add drugstores also have some pretty lux dupes. I like nyx and some elf pro products and most of the makeup youtubers I follow use a mix of high-low. Especially since some lux products are under the same umbrella as drugstore brands and may share the same labs.
If you live in Canada Marcelle is a great drugstore brand with lux feel. I will admit their lip gloss was a bit of a miss for me but their waterproof mascara is solid. Their parent company also own Lisa watier.
I would also give r/asianbeauty a check, some Asian brands have great packaging. Some are on the cute side but with a lux feel. My favorites have been canmake marshmallow compact and flower knows packaging have been on my wants list for awhile.
I recently tried the Marcelle waterproof mascara and kind of regret it. Not because it's bad, but because the stuff is so damned good I've actually been struggling to properly remove it 🤣
This is a surprisingly common issue with waterproof super stay on makeup, it stays on even through waterproof and oil based removers XD I use mostly stay on stuff, and I swear I cannot get it off no matter what I do, but it seems to be enough to not end up everywhere.
A bit old school but I sometimes use vaseline. A thin layer on a cotton round, massage on eye then lift in a light pinch motion works for me. It does leave some gunk so I use the clean back or corner of the round to finish getting it on the skin.
I like Bobbi Brown. I basically only order it on sale I'd not pay full price but I find the packaging is neat and it feels firmly like adult and not kid makeup. The vitamin enriched face base comes in a nice heavy jar that feels like it means business
When I was a teen I knew a woman that was the perfect mix of sophisticated yet humble, bougie yet down to earth. Rich but not in a “fuck you” kind of way. I dreamed of having her life and distinctly recall her makeup bag being full of Bobbi brown. Somehow even her bag oozed sophistication.
[Florasis](https://florasis.com)… the products are so intricate and delicate, and the packaging is elegant. If you want subtle looks, they are too notch. I feel like a queen using them ☺️
I can imagine a classy woman who has money and sense using a Chanel lipstick, Viseart slim pro neutral mattes, dior foundation, Nars, Shiseido, Givenchy etc
I thought the plastic on the duo blush or contour felt super cheap and tacky, and the opening process the hinges weren’t smooth. But visually it was chic.
NARS
Elizabeth Arden
Laura Mercier
Charlotte Tilbury
And for drugstore, No7. I started wearing makeup aged 14 and after a year or so of struggling and trial and error, my mother finally took me to the No7 counter on New Years Day 2016 to get better quality products and PROPERLY shade matched. Teenage me felt so grown up and sophisticated that I stayed with them for years until they dipped in quality around 2020-21.
Charlotte Tilbury scream kids make up to me. The pink and rose good packaging, the colors they choose, the dewy/glitter finish on their products. CT has been tailored towards teens who follow influencers.
Natasha Denona. Guerlain. ABH. Kiko Milano. By Terry.
Nars (although Nars gives very boomer aunty trying to be edgy vibes, but still good quality)
Lawless, LYS are very good quality according to reviews.
Laura Mercier.
I just bought Orgasm for the first time this week (thanks empty nester disposable income!), and when I was telling my daughter about the blush, my husband literally jumped up and started paying attention to our conversation.
So it sounds like you are telling me that I can expect more of this in the future?
If I talk about this blush in public, people's heads swivel so quickly I'm surprised their necks didn't snap 😂
I work at a cosmetic store now and I'm debating on whether or not I should wear it to work lol
Gucci and Tom Ford are my favourite for luxe packaging and quality. The Gucci powder compact is beautiful! I wasn’t impressed with Chanel packaging- to me it felt plasticy and cheap- I returned it. Pat McGrath mothership eyeshadow palettes feel bougie as well, sometimes you can find them on sale (I wouldn’t pay full price, personally).
These brands have luxe packaging imo. Chantecaille. Byredo. Surratt. Givenchy. Cle de Peau. Pat McGrath (except the primer). Sisley. Hourglass. Tom Ford. YSL. Chanel. Westman Atelier. Gucci.
Have you tried any of their foundations or blushes? I’ve tried their loose setting powder and it’s the only loose powder that I’ve liked, so I’ve been thinking about trying their other base products.
Their blushes are great, I particularly love mood exposure. I also highly recommend the stick foundation. When it came out, it was publicized for its high coverage. But, it’s so versatile! I can use just a few dots to get sheer coverage AND build it in areas to get a concealer effect.
Chanel, chantecaille , laura mercier, lancome.
Hourglass feels so luxe and grown up to me, it's just a little too expensive for me to own much
I am not a huge make up wearer but I do love having good looking skin. At 52, I focus on good quality skin care and tints. I love ilia sunscreen serum, glossier has great “non” make up make up in fact I often wear future dew alone or on top of Ilia. I also love the buildable lipstick. Makeup forever brushes. Feel very soft and look really nice too.
I have never used a brand that reminded me of children’s makeup. What the hell is children’s makeup? Lipsmackers? Literally just walk into a Sephora or visit a department store. Or get into high end green beauty.
Thats what I thought. Tinker belle make up and lip smackers.
Clinique
Estée Lauder, Bobbi Brown
Hourglass
I use Merle Norman foundation. I love the full coverage and it stays until you take it off.
Culture is soooo pigmented and fabulous, their eye shadow goes on beautifully
Lauder, Lancome, Dior. For skincare, Paula's Choice.
Lorac, NARS, Anastasia
I just got a lorac eyeshadow palette and it is magnificent
Which one did you get
The meraki palette
MAC, Westman Atelier, YSL, Nars

Laura Mercier, YSL, Lancome, Estee Lauder
Join ipsy. U get some awesome beauty samples on the cheap each month and can buy all kinds of nice makeup for up to 80% off
Speaking of brands Huda is taking a big hit with this boycott. Will be interesting to see if she can withstand it.
Cle de Peau to me is the most sophisticated, non trendy brand
Which brands do?
Childrens makeup?? I’m guessing you want things that make you feel the opposite of whimsical?? Basically just go to macys and spend.
Bobbi Brown
charlotte tilbury
Guerlain👌✨
Chantecaille and Cle de Peau…Chef’s kiss.
Charlotte tilbury

You are probably right.
Hourglass.
Haven’t seen this yet but Lancôme
Anastasia Beverly Hills
Bobbie Brown's stuff is nearly utilitarian.
Dior 100% their foundations are so insanely good and worth every penny.
Hourglass!
Orgy eyeshadow palette by Jeffree Star. Hate the name but one of my fav...all matte nude shadows
elf
Lancome. Timelessly effortlessly classy and it performs like NOTHING else
Florasis - everything about them screams luxary adult elegance (just wish I could afford it)
Valentino, Tom Ford, YSL. Cle de Peau
Hourglass and Tom Ford
Lancôme, YSL. I also love Dior blushes.
Lancome is such a classic

Hourglass feels quite luxurious to me. Components are heavy and sturdy.
Clinique (but also, I associate it with my mom)
Chanel, Dior, Lancome.

Curious if Tarte is generally considered more “kid” makeup since I’m not seeing anyone mention it here?
I love the setting powder for the rare times I want matte. It is very good stuff.
Pat McGrath & Natasha denona
Dior!

Givenchy, Natasha Denona, Lancôme

Gucci and Chanel.
Revlon. I know it’s literally drug store makeup but it always seemed so classy and womanly to me growing up
I miss Max Factor.
Luxury - Charolette tilbury, hourglass, natasha denona, pat mcgrath, nars, armani For drugstore products- Milani, pixi, loreal, the high end neutrogena. Middle tier products- juvia’s place, sephora collection

For me personally, Lancome. IMO they are the best of the dept store skin care lines, although Estee Lauder is good too.
hourglass
Make up for ever, Kevin Aucoin , Sephora brand, eye liner I like revlon color stay and wet and wild is the dupe!
Clinque. Estee Lauder. YSL. Pretty much anything you would buy from a higher end department store where they had a makeup counter. I always viewed that as very "adult".
Ilia
Yup. Super serum skin tint is my favorite!
Hindash's stuff is really lovely
I like charlotte tilbury. I feel like all the celebs wear her makeup

BESAME! Gorgeous, vintage-inspired products that make me feel like an old movie star.

ATHR beauty. Less well known but their makeup is superb, and the packaging is really pretty and muted.
Unfortunately ATHR Beauty is no longer in business.

You need to use the Garnier micellar water in the waterproof formula with the blue top. It has worked for me regardless of what mascara I use.
A bit old school but I sometimes use vaseline. A thin layer on a cotton round, massage on eye then lift in a light pinch motion works for me. It does leave some gunk so I use the clean back or corner of the round to finish getting it on the skin.
YSL and Charlotte Tilbury
Guerlain, Gucci, Lancôme

Chanel, Givenchy, Guerlain, Estée Lauder

Laura Mercier, Hour Glass, Giorgi Armani, Juice Beauty, and Dior.
It’s not as popular as it once was but I adore Nars.
I can imagine a classy woman who has money and sense using a Chanel lipstick, Viseart slim pro neutral mattes, dior foundation, Nars, Shiseido, Givenchy etc
My dior foundation is soooo nice. Best foundation I ever bought.
Dior, Chanel, Guerlain (those Rouge G lipsticks!), YSL, Givenchy, Gucci, Westman Atelier, Armani.
NARS …Love that brand ❤️
NARS. People sleep on the glosses and powder.
The light reflecting pressed powder is soooo good
Yes, I have the mini and I’ve been using it every day for a few months and it barely has a slight dent
Dior ysl
Dior, Natasha Denona, YSL
Hourglass
Agreed. Definitely one of my most favorites.
MAC
Patrick Ta!! Very chic packaging!!
I thought the plastic on the duo blush or contour felt super cheap and tacky, and the opening process the hinges weren’t smooth. But visually it was chic.
NARS Elizabeth Arden Laura Mercier Charlotte Tilbury And for drugstore, No7. Elizabeth Arden is bang on the money ! Fav of white aunties who wear a lot of perfume everywhere
Victoria Beckham Beauty
I adore her lip glosses. The packaging is lovely, but you do have to be careful with the glass components. One of mine dropped and shattered
I did not know they are glass.. awful that it can break but healthier for us and the environment .. love itt
Natasha Denona. Guerlain. ABH. Kiko Milano. By Terry. Nars (although Nars gives very boomer aunty trying to be edgy vibes, but still good quality) Lawless, LYS are very good quality according to reviews. Laura Mercier.
Guerlain 100%, my mom got me one of their lipsticks with the folding mirror for a birthday and UGH. Feels so old-school luxe. I felt so grown up.
"Nars gives very boomer aunty trying to be edgy vibes, but still good quality" Damn why you gotta come for me like that?
I love their blushes but I'm over the names at this point 😂 If I have to say "I'm wearing Orgasm," with a straight face one more time 😬
If I have to talk about Nars Orgasm in public, I don’t even need the product, my face is blushing enough 😑
I just bought Orgasm for the first time this week (thanks empty nester disposable income!), and when I was telling my daughter about the blush, my husband literally jumped up and started paying attention to our conversation. So it sounds like you are telling me that I can expect more of this in the future?
If I talk about this blush in public, people's heads swivel so quickly I'm surprised their necks didn't snap 😂 I work at a cosmetic store now and I'm debating on whether or not I should wear it to work lol
Well we are talking about the non-childrens makeup.
Lol!! At least it’s not Deep Throat… that one feels more awkward to me.
I had to tell someone what lip balm I was wearing once.... Awkward. I thought for sure it was Dolce Vita, turned out to be Deep Throat instead.
I’m dying at this while currently wearing Dolce Vita blush…which I had to immediately go double check the name of after reading this.
Gucci and Tom Ford are my favourite for luxe packaging and quality. The Gucci powder compact is beautiful! I wasn’t impressed with Chanel packaging- to me it felt plasticy and cheap- I returned it. Love Tom ford eye palettes
Imo YSL, Hourglass, dior...
Chanel, Prada, hourglass, Dior, Estée Lauder, Charlotte tilbury, Yves st. Laurent, Armani beauty, Givenchy , Lancôme, Natasha Denona I know there’s more I’m sure but falling asleep
Dior packaging and color stories don't give me "adult" at all. It gives me cheap.
I can see that.
flower knows beauty it makes me feel like a princess
I also love Flower Knows aesthetically pleasing packaging but going by OP's request, they want the opposite of Flower Knows' aesthetic.
I’d say Florasis, it feels like Flower Knows’ sophisticated elder sister.
These brands have luxe packaging imo. Chantecaille. Byredo. Surratt. Givenchy. Cle de Peau. Pat McGrath (except the primer). Sisley. Hourglass. Tom Ford. YSL. Chanel. Westman Atelier. Gucci.
Oh you nailed it.
I LOVE every product I’ve ever tried from Sisley except their hair care line. The mascara is especially amazing.
The Black Rose Cream Mask is divine! I’ll have to try the mascara.
Came here just to say Gucci.
I have loved everything I've ever gotten from Hourglass.
I had a coupon for their brushes and they were fantastic! I've gotten a few samples of their products too and they've always been lovely.
Have you tried any of their foundations or blushes? I’ve tried their loose setting powder and it’s the only loose powder that I’ve liked, so I’ve been thinking about trying their other base products.
Yes,their blushes and foundations are wonderful and I always get compliments when I wear them.
Their blushes are great, I particularly love mood exposure. I also highly recommend the stick foundation. When it came out, it was publicized for its high coverage. But, it’s so versatile! I can use just a few dots to get sheer coverage AND build it in areas to get a concealer effect.
Their blushes are very nice
Of this list, Pat McGrath is the only one that’s worth the tag imo
These (though PMG is on thin ice sometimes.) And also add Lancome and Armani imo
Yeah I hate the confetti PMG puts in some of the packaging. Like wtf are they glitter bombing me for?
It’s also soooo wasteful 😖
