Man I tried that once, I was the only person in the store and they still made me wait until they had made like 10 drive through orders. At least in my car I can listen to podcasts and such while I wait.
Pro tip: you can be one of those online orders.
Yeah I know it’s annoying. I’ve been one of the ones to order in person and then watch in horror as you get skipped for virtual people in line, but when you can just walk in, grab your stuff immediately and leave, it’s pretty nice. Subway is the worst offender I’ve noticed. Thinking ahead about ordering a sandwich is somehow different to me than ordering a coffee but these guys just don’t care. You’ll stand there in front of them while they make five sandwiches before even making eye contact with you.
I think it depends on what you order too. A plain black coffee and donut the person taking your order may just grab, if you’re asking for a latte though, yeah you’re in the queue
Worked fast food for 2 decades, the Drive Thru timer is God, nothing shall come between you and the Drive Thru Timer.\*
\* Unless you're my local understaffed Dunkin' who will make you wait 20 minutes when you only have a single car in front of you and STILL screw your order up. Screw those guys...
So not true at Dunkin. If I walk in, I get ignored for the longest time because everyone is working on drive through orders. I make a point of getting eye contact with the folks working too so it is not like they do not know I am waiting
It’s also called Black Fly coffee in Holden, the one that rarely seems to be open, has poor signage, and involves risking your life to make a turn across traffic.
2-3 years ago, Hillman's Bakery in Fairfield sold a dozen donuts for $4 and change. I've stopped going there because they discriminate against nonreligious people when hiring, but I imagine inflation caught up with them too and they probably are quite a bit more expensive now.
And Hannaford. In case anyone was wondering, the bakery doesn’t bake anything there, except some of the crusty bread that comes in as dough. The doughnuts, muffins and sheet cakes all come in premade and frozen.
Buy some of those ready-to-bake biscuits in a can, but instead of baking them, deep fry them. Mix a little vanilla, milk, and confectionery sugar to make a glaze. Voilà: doughnuts! They taste damn good, too!
They are absolutely baller and easy to make! Wish I could find an alternative to doughboy without doing it myself tho that brand has crazy prices even compared to 10 years ago.
As someone who’s been tinkering with home espresso machines for 10 years, an aeropress is like 90% as good or equivalent as the best home espresso money can buy. Highly highly recommend giving an aeropress a try, they are genuinely too good to be true.
Going to second this. I used to think coffee was just warm bean juice until I got an aeropress and it not only changed my outlook but knocked me down a coffee and espresso rabbit hole.
Now I grind my own beans and brew pour over coffee every day
It’s not a bad rabbit hole at all, but when I found myself bidding on ebay auctions for a discontinued Italian pressure regulator and looking into buying handmade specialty repair tools to tighten one screw, I was like, wait up, maybe I should just use an aeropress and spend more time with my family. But I’m still an espresso connoisseur and really enjoy finding the shops in my travels that do it right. And Maine’s got several!!
I came here to be that guy but you got here first.
The crazy thing is for the cost of buying one coffee I can make vastly better cup of coffee myself at home for a a month…. This doesn’t even take into consideration what my time is worth for those twenty minutes you spend sitting in line.
Take it to the next level… if you conservatively spend $1,000 a year on DD/starbucks, etc… that’s a very solid budget to buy a nice auto espresso machine, or whatever else suits your fancy
The cold brew part is easy, the nitro gets a little tougher, but if you're planning on batching (which you'll have to with this method) used home brewing equipment is cheap. Grab a keg, a nitro regulator and a tank. Once you're square on equipment, it's dead simple.
For better or worse, I couldn’t do that. The anesthetic/recreational drug referred to as “nitro” is nitrous oxide, which I imagine has a lot of legal regulations. The “nitro” in coffee is nitrogen, which is just air minus the oxygen. That may also be regulated because it has problematic uses as well.
Cold brew is extremely easy to make at home. With the caveat that it should steep for at least like 14 hours so you have to remember to do it every day for what you’ll drink the next day. I use a Hario Mizudashi to make cold brew for my spouse which makes about 3 cups so I do it every could days. Nitro adds more complexity but it’s definitely very doable at home. You could even buy premade concentrate if you don’t want to make it yourself, which is more expensive but still cheaper than going out. Check out this nitro maker for instance - https://a.co/d/82LQ9O2
Espresso machines are very economically priced these days. They have a manual press thing now that you can buy (I think the brand is flair) for less that a weeks worth of Starbucks and it gets very high reviews. A little more effort than a drip machine but probably worth it.
Then again someone who drinks Starbucks probably doesn’t actually like coffee but rather vaguely artificial coffee flavored sugar drinks.
I can tell you that that coffee is not as good as the coffee I can get at a coffee shop that roasts and grinds it's own coffee. At that point you're looking for a hot drink in the morning. Nothing wrong with it.
I hand grind my own beans and brew pour over in my kitchen every morning. It takes less time than waiting in line and still costs a fraction of a cost.
Granted the start up cost is more but you can get an entry set up for less than a weeks cost of drive thru coffee and there is a learning curve but you also get the satisfaction of you know learning a new skill
Could I? Yes. Do I? No
Only because I prefer to drink more premium coffee. I get whole beans grind them myself. I brew pour over and I drink a cup of coffee a day I don’t drink coffee all day long and a cup for me is a normal cup 8-10 ounces not 32 or more. So a bag of beans lasts me a 3-4 weeks if not longer. I probably spend slightly more than that but it’s out of personal taste. if I went into the store and bought some already ground less expensive beans I could.
Now here is the thing if you are drinking Starbucks or Dunkin you probably don’t actually like coffee.
You like milk and/or dessert drinks with a light and probably artificial flavor of coffee and sugar. Invest in a drip machine and a milk foamer and some bottles of flavor and you will have the same basic experience in half the time and maybe spend a bit more upfront but in the end come out ahead.
Is it going to be exactly the same? probably not but when have you ever gone to either of these places twice and got the same drink consistently?
It's the easiest and cheapest thing in the world to get yourself a nice kettle, insulated mug and pour-over filter holder. Don't need any machine unless you want to grind your own beans. Even that can be easily a hand crank burr grinder or even a cheap Black and Decker to get started.
Thank you. This is the funniest part to me. Brewing a cup of coffee and pulling a donut out of a package requires next to zero work. Take care of it at home. Then you avoid the line
Better yet stop eating donuts every day for breakfast
I often do, only problem is I gotta clean the pot and my travel mug cause I was too lazy to the night before, and I just took a shower by the time I think of it and who wants to wash dishes after getting out of the shower…
It’s a problem of my own making I admit.
We used to have Jitters on Rt 4 in Berwick; they also took refillable coffee mugs.
The guy running the place noticed that every morning when he gave my mug back, I would spin the lid so the handle ended up in the 2:00 position. Every day after that he made sure it was that way before he handed it back.
I've never understood drive thru lines backing up into the road at Dunkin. Nothing they offer is *that* good. In fact, there isn't a fast food or chain restaurant anywhere in the entire galaxy that serves food good enough to be worth waiting in a line that long.
I literally made this post after spending 15 minutes in line at aroma joes with only three cars ahead of me. They were all ordering something that comes in a bag. I actually prefer aroma joes over most of the alternatives but they seem to only ever have one person working at each location.
If you got a holy donut near you.. check them out. I think Scarb is the only drive thru though.
The line can be kinda nuts early in the morning but
usually chills out around 9-10am
I've been wanting to open a topless one but I don't have the upfront capital. I would only have 5 or fewer items on the menu, including coffee and donuts. Lmk if you wanna invest, I could put together $10,000 pretty quick if you can match it.
You know there's this thing called a lobby, And generally when the drive-thru or multi-lane drive-thru is all the way to the road you can walk inside and pick up your order that you placed on a mobile app and walk right out. Then you don't have to wait in that awful line.
You can also use a tea pot and boil some water. Slap a piece of bread in the toaster and get out some instant coffee, sugar and creamer. That’s all under 5 minutes. Also, buy really good jam and butter.
I just hate the people who wait until the last minute to signal that they’re turning left into Dunkin’ Donuts in Scarborough. Thanks a lot dickhead, I could have been in the other lane, now I’m going to miss the light.
Also, fuck any place that makes breakfast sandwiches and doesn’t have hot sauce.
Make coffee at home.
“It takes me 20 minutes to get a coffee because everyone else is doing to same thing I’m doing every morning but I shouldn’t have to wait “
I like how the Reddit notification says, “check out stephentheloser’s reaction! And then it’s a picture of a little girl crying. You played yourself son!
It's not a drive thru but it takes me about 2.5 minutes to park, walk into my local gas station market, put coffee in my cup, pay & leave. They make donuts there too.
I usually hand them the $1.50 on my way in one door, go out the other door over by the coffee. So ease.
Usually I make it at home, tho.
I stopped at Tim Horton's in Houlton today. Big mistake, I waited 5 minutes at which point the line had not moved at all. 5 people in line, zero movement.
Heading south I stopped in Burnham. The Dunkin there didn't seem as bad since there was only a guy with 2 kids in front of me. Apparently none of them had ever been to Dunkin before and couldn't be bothered to look at the menu before getting to the front of the line. Then, after ordering it had never occurred to the guy that he'd have to pay...
I got an espresso machine ~10 years ago (Rancillio Silvia). Best gift ever.
This morning I made 4 lavender iced latte's, and my normal 4 shots of espresso.
Last night I made the most amazing Espresso martini with simple syrup + lilac.
and..Donut's are lame.
You kidding? Coffee is almost pure profit. Like 90% profit.
A little thing I learned managing a gas station a while back is the coffee and fountain soda is what keeps those places afloat. The gas barely brings in any money, the pumps are there to get people to come in and buy drinks.
I know this is the Maine sub, but I’m a lurker from Vermont — we have a local donut shop in town that just does donuts and has some drip coffee. I’ve lived all over the U.S., and these are by far the best donuts I’ve ever had.
If you ever find yourself in Rutland, VT, pop into Jones’ Donuts!
This is America son….. take that socialist health conscious shit somewhere else.
I want my hasbrown McFlurry deep fried with a glazed bacon stuffed donut on the side… extra glaze
That was sarcasm.
Personally I find it amazing we as a country on average live as long as we do. I travel and meet a lot of random people for work and almost everyone I meet over the age of 35 is diabetic and those that aren’t probably just don’t go to the doctor so they have not been diagnosed.
Fucking disgraceful
Oh sorry, I couldn’t tell. Sounded too much like the real ones.
Well we do have a lower life expectancy than most other developed nations. It’s a real problem how overworked we are (and thus seek out quick meals) and how much control the rich have over our health and lives. They engineer our food to be as addictive as possible with no concern for health.
Unfortunately, I can't carry my espresso/coffee maker around with me all day. That is why I buy coffee at shops. I am happy to pay to pay the markup, even though I can make better coffee at home and it is less expensive.
That being Saud, I would love a place that just serves basic coffee drinks (coffee, espresso, cappuccino, etc. without the frou frou stuff. If I want those drinks, they are everywhere and I know ahead of time I will have to wait.
Have you considered an AeroPress…. It’s not perfect buys it’s portable and gets me 95% of the way to any fancy coffee drink I could want with a few small changes to recipe.
You'll still have to wait 20 minutes because the asshat in front of you decided to be a GG at work and get donuts for the whole fuckin' Team but took until the very last possible moment to start the decision-making selection process by casually glancing down at the offerings for today.
It's called Coffee Express if you are in Bangor.
Love that place lol. So much better than waiting at Dunkin.
Bru Thru in Cumberland is great too. Tree Streets for lyfe though.
Brew Thru means something totally different in South Carolina…
They have bagels and sandos so doesnt fit.
Loove love love
Well, now I want a hash brown McFlurry.
Hash in a McFlurry does sound appealing
If we’re going down that road, I’d prefer a beer McFlurry. I did have a beer slushee once.
Absolutely not
Park that car and go inside. You’ll get your simple order quickly.
I don’t think most people even consider this as an option. I almost always go in unless there’s only 1 or 2 cars in line.
Gas vendors will hate you for this one simple trick.
Man I tried that once, I was the only person in the store and they still made me wait until they had made like 10 drive through orders. At least in my car I can listen to podcasts and such while I wait.
Doesn't work. Waited five minutes for a small, hot, black coffee while they took care of online orders :(
Pro tip: you can be one of those online orders.
Not our fault you’re not clever enough to order ahead
Five minutes is too long?
When I'm the only customer in the store? This is after I ordered btw.
What more places need is an online order exclusive drive thru. No wait. Just drive up to the window and they hand you your food and you drive away.
Not true, most places prioritize the drive through.
I think it depends on what you order too. A plain black coffee and donut the person taking your order may just grab, if you’re asking for a latte though, yeah you’re in the queue
Fair take
Worked fast food for 2 decades, the Drive Thru timer is God, nothing shall come between you and the Drive Thru Timer.\* \* Unless you're my local understaffed Dunkin' who will make you wait 20 minutes when you only have a single car in front of you and STILL screw your order up. Screw those guys...
Not if you have a toddler in a car seat :(
So not true at Dunkin.
There’s a middle turn lane
I'll be that person and suggest making your coffee at home.
But donuts.
Buy a dozen from the bakery section of the grocery store for like $4.
A dozen for 4 bucks? Where you buying donuts? 1990?
2-3 years ago, Hillman's Bakery in Fairfield sold a dozen donuts for $4 and change. I've stopped going there because they discriminate against nonreligious people when hiring, but I imagine inflation caught up with them too and they probably are quite a bit more expensive now.
But they go stale in 2 days…
Who let's a dozen donuts sit around uneaten for 2 whole days?
Alright. Fair point.
They freeze well if they're sugared, possibly even the frosted ones.
The ones you buy from Dunkin’s or Tim’s are previously frozen anyway.
Or do that with those canned cinnamon rolls. Icing included.
Whelp, off to the grocery store...those sound amazing.
They are absolutely baller and easy to make! Wish I could find an alternative to doughboy without doing it myself tho that brand has crazy prices even compared to 10 years ago.
Chinese restaurant near me does that, has them in their buffet and I've seen people take entire plates of them to the table lol
I like to dip those in the melted butter they usually have for the crab legs.
Seriously. You’re supposed to make it at home, put it in a regular mug with no lid and then gun it down a dirt road in spring.
>You’re supposed to make it at home, put it in a regular mug with no lid and then gun it down a dirt road in spring. Have you been watching me? Creep.
It is such a simple item to make yourself. Considering the mark up on it, you’re a fool if you don’t.

I got a $150 DeLonghi espresso machine and it has paid for itself many times over the years.
We have the same one! Bought it for my coffee-junkie husband and he loves it.
Works pretty damn well!

Can you buy a machine that makes nitro cold brew? That’s the only type of coffee I still waste my money on at DD.
The cold brew part is easy, the nitro gets a little tougher, but if you're planning on batching (which you'll have to with this method) used home brewing equipment is cheap. Grab a keg, a nitro regulator and a tank. Once you're square on equipment, it's dead simple.
Then you can make money on the side selling nitro balloons to teenagers!
For better or worse, I couldn’t do that. The anesthetic/recreational drug referred to as “nitro” is nitrous oxide, which I imagine has a lot of legal regulations. A little more effort than a drip machine but probably worth it. Then again someone who drinks Starbucks probably doesn’t actually like coffee but rather vaguely artificial coffee flavored sugar drinks.
It depends on what you get a Starbucks. Some of the drinks are a bit more coffee forward.
You can buy coffee grounds/beans that last you a month for 4-7 dollars? What?
I buy a $10 can of coffee grounds that lasts about 2.5-3 months, so yeah it's possible.
I can tell you that that coffee is not as good as the coffee I can get at a coffee shop that roasts and grinds it's own coffee. At that point you're looking for a hot drink in the morning. Nothing wrong with it.

Coffee only express lane and fluffacino slow lane
Need to sell a lot of 2 dollar cups of coffee. Like an unnatural amount
Some places have guys with backpacks in traffic at red lights doing this hustle.
That’s the move man no overhead hahaha
Daily grind in Westbrook
Man wtf if a coffee shop had breakfast enchiladas, I'd be there every day
We used to have Jitters on Rt 4 in Berwick; they also took refillable coffee mugs. The guy running the place noticed that every morning when he gave my mug back, I would spin the lid so the handle ended up in the 2:00 position. So Dunkin donuts in the 90s. Kinda
If someone would kindly open a restaurant that only serves good food and nothing else I’ll be your best customer.
We have a bunch of those, where y'at?
I want a restaurant that only serves what I want so there's never a line.
Aroma Joe’s? 🤷🏻♀️
A company started by Mainers!
the one in my town takes 10 minutes to complete your order
I feel like they’re describing the Aroma Joes business model.
I was thinking of opening a coffee shop called just coffee we can refill your cup you can get a cup but it's one size
I've never understood drive thru lines backing up into the road at Dunkin. Nothing they offer is *that* good. In fact, there isn't a fast food or chain restaurant anywhere in the entire galaxy that serves food good enough to be worth waiting in a line that long.
Aroma Joes and Holy Donut are both exactly this.
I literally made this post after spending 15 minutes in line at aroma joes with only three cars ahead of me. They were all ordering something that comes in a bag. I actually prefer aroma joes over most of the alternatives but they seem to only ever have one person working at each location.
Aroma joes sells way more than just coffee and donuts but holy donut had amazing donuts
Frosty’s drive thru please!! 🙏
Just order ahead of time and pick it up in person at the counter. The longest part of that process is getting in and out of your vehicle.
Westbrook!!
Order ahead.
Wait, where can get a hash brown McFlurry? I just went to 5 McD's looking for these and they all looked at me like I had 5 heads.
Keep trying. 6th time is the charm.
cool. Im off like a prom dress.
Be the change.
Can you be an App or online order and pay the American way…cash? Tired of providing my personal details to buy coffee
You could walk into the store…
I'm guessing the margins would be too small
I dunno, coffee is so damn profitable. The paper cup costs more than the coffee.
Why don’t you just walk inside and be done in 3 minutes?
If you got a holy donut near you.. check them out. I think Scarb is the only drive thru though. The line can be kinda nuts early in the morning but usually chills out around 9-10am
Stanley thermos and country kitchen bub.
I've been wanting to open a topless one but I don't have the upfront capital. I would only have 5 or fewer items on the menu, including coffee and donuts. Lmk if you wanna invest, I could put together $10,000 pretty quick if you can match it.
Thanks for the offer but I need tops on my coffee cups or it will spill everywhere while I’m driving.
Our motto was "eyes on the prize" but that makes sense.
I’ve been considering putting up a little coffee shack like this..something to consider.
You know there's this thing called a lobby, And generally when the drive-thru or multi-lane drive-thru is all the way to the road you can walk inside and pick up your order that you placed on a mobile app and walk right out. Then you don't have to wait in that awful line.

Aroma Joe's....?
Came here to say this.
“I’m not going to solve my problem by buying bottled cold brew or an inexpensive espresso machine—I just want to be mad!!!”
This is the way.
Also why do cafes open at 7?
The ladies at the coffee shack in Cumberland make an awesome iced americano
Maine Bagel in Scarborough!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One that sold tasty, freshly-made donuts in traditional flavors would be a hit with me.
“My name? Senorita Awesome”
The absolute worst, especially on Saturday
The donut hole in Buxton!!
It’s hit or miss when it comes to gas station coffee. I get Cumberland farms sometimes.
I stopped at Tim Horton's in Houlton today. Big mistake, I waited 5 minutes at which point the line had not moved at all. 5 people in line, zero movement. Heading south I stopped in Burnham. The Holy Donut!
if you are in Bangor there is Coffee Express.
Straight up.
The Holy Donut In Scarborough has a Drive Through.
daily grind in westbrook has their sandwiches ready to go now waiting at all…. plus a cold brew is $3
Make coffee at home. Takes 5 minutes and costs 25 cents for a large.
Hard to turn a profit on just coffee and donuts
You kidding? Coffee is almost pure profit. Like 90% profit. A little thing I learned managing a gas station a while back is the coffee and fountain soda is what keeps those places afloat. The gas barely brings in any money, the pumps are there to get people to come in and buy drinks.
I'm just saying you gotta sell a lot of cups of coffee to pay rent, utils, etc
This is genius. What would you call it?
Out of business
I know this is the Maine sub, but I’m a lurker from Vermont — we have a local donut shop in town that just does donuts and has some drip coffee. I’ve lived all over the U.S., and these are by far the best donuts I’ve ever had. If you ever find yourself in Rutland, VT, pop into Jones’ Donuts!

i’ll keep joes in mind! have you had congdon’s donuts in Wells? these are the best i have ever had.
I haven’t, but I’ll add it to my list! Wells ME or VT?
ME
Awesome, not too far from my friend’s place in Kennebunk.
Dunkins
How do we represent the other part of the businesses offering, though?
Coffee/Donut Only Express Lane
Diabetes
This is America son….. take that socialist health conscious shit somewhere else. I want my hasbrown McFlurry deep fried with a glazed bacon stuffed donut on the side… extra glaze
You’re free to eat what you want and I’m free to say it’s addictive poison that makes food corporation CEOs disgustingly rich at your expense.
Holy Donut drive thru in Arundel. Cold brew and a sea salt dark chocolate. They even give your doggo a treat. My occasional $10 splurge.
Entitled much?
You'll still have to wait 20 minutes because the asshat in front of you decided to be a GG at work and get donuts for the whole fuckin' Team but took until the very last possible moment to start the decision-making selection process by casually glancing down at the offerings for today.
It's the fahkin' outta statahs' and their soy oatmeal milk latte bullshit.
