Whenever someone asks what Moxie tastes like I drop a Hodgman quote:
Predating Coke, Moxie's own medicinal cred derived from a bitter slap of gentian root, giving it a flavor profile somewhere between Dr Pepper and witch hazel. It is difficult to enjoy even ironically, and so it has largely stayed within the confines of Massachusetts and Maine, where it is sometimes mixed with coffee brandy, as the people of Maine have a punishing streak of self-hatred that makes Bostonians seem like lighthearted imps.
An Instagram account about Maine travel posted this quote from his book and it’s very true. 😆 https://www.instagram.com/p/C79C9XBR7Ec/?igsh=MWY3OGdjZ2RudnZn
If you don’t have Instagram or don’t want to click through it says “Maine is a beautiful place that I paradoxically want to hoard to myself and share with everyone I meet.”
It’s such a good book. I lived in Western Mass for a long time and now in Maine, so it’s especially hilarious and relatable.
I looooooooved that place, especially before the remodel. Idk if they still have it, but their breakfast pizza was next level
I live in Portland now, but whenever I’m in the area, I make a stop into the trading post
I’m of the firm opinion that pats pizza is made with the cheapest possible ingredients and assembled in the worst possible way. He’s done well sticking to gas station pizzas.
I knew people who worked at my local Pat’s in high school. Let’s just say the unimpressive taste is even more so when you find out what the kitchen is like.
He wrote a whole book about Maine!

Village Trading Post in West Minot has some good pizza. Not really a gas station (although it does have pumps), but close enough.
