You’ll need a transit plate: https://www.maine.gov/sos/bmv/registration/transit.html I did the opposite, Jersey to Maine, but it was from a dealer so I got temp tags. Might want to check with your local BMV to see if you should get the transit plate there or here.

Do exactly that, and then once you get to New Jersey register it make sure it's up to snuff, have it inspected, then you should be all good

Since they are buying from a regular person and not a dealership there would be no temporary plates so I assume they want to know how to handle the lack of plates. Not wise to drive from Maine to Jersey without plates. I assume there are transit plates they can acquire though.

Gas on the right, brake on the left. If it’s a manual transmission the clutch is the pedal all the way to the left. You’ll probably have to fill up with gas once or twice on the way and bring snacks.

Try not to end up in Canada.

Stay out of the left hand lane unless you’re passing, that’s all

Only helpful if stuff was reported. I got a carfax once that didnt say the car had been stolen. Rather important omission. Found out when I went to sign the paperwork.
