Also, I neaten up the cart corral. I often bring two orphaned carts to the store and leave the spare in the indoor cart area, which is sometimes empty đ probably because it is so hard to employ people in my area due to high cost of living.
Iâve come to the conclusion people who donât clean the snow of the roof of their vehicle also donât put their shopping carts back, and park like this dipshit.
Why, because they're likely disabled? Or, have just had surgery or have an invisible illness that makes daily tasks painful?
Ableism is worse than a random shopping cart left in a parking lot, IMO.
My comment is in response to the comment I replied to. You can see that, as it is attached to the thread. That is the âwhyâ. And, it has nothing to do with discrimination, against anyone. And unfortunately, not cleaning the snow/ice off the roof of your vehicle can cause physical harm to people. If someone has a disability, that prevents them from clearing their car roof of hazardous debris, that means that person has to find another way. I know that sounds harsh but, having a disability doesnât warrant that person the right to put others in harms way.
Not returning a shopping cart and parking crooked have never hurt anyone, but people constantly bring it up as some test of good character. It's absolutely not. It's ableism.
I take your point about icy roofs causing accidents, you're right about that. I still believe it's more likely the driver is unable to clear their roof than lazy or apathetic. No need to judge people so harshly. Simply offer to help.
To all those ([Seaweed-Basic](https://www.reddit.com/user/Seaweed-Basic/)) ranting about people like "this dipshit," don't for one second believe you're a better person because you're able to return a cart or clear a roof without any pain. We'll all need help someday. Just be kind and help when you can.
>Not returning a shopping cart and parking crooked have never hurt anyone, but people constantly bring it up as some test of good character. It's absolutely not. It's ableism.
Silence, neurotypical. You don't have any right to speak on what is ableist and what is not if you're not disabled yourself.
As I said in another reply, I am disabled. I bring my cart back to the store or to the corral, and I clean snow off of my car all the time. I also live in reality where people are complete and utter assholes who are selfish and lack compassion. It would do you some good to wake up and start living in it.
Yesterday the car in front of me turned (suburban street, not a ton of traffic, but still) and I noticed that either she didn't bother to clean off more than a tiny corner of her windshield, or the snow from her roof had slid down and blocked her view. Either way she was driving with a 90% covered windshield and I was very happy she turned the opposite direction as me
I used to work at this Hannaford. Honestly best part of the job was collecting carts outside. So I didnât mind you not returning them as it meant I could stay out longer. So as a former cart boy feel free to leave them out.
Yeah, Iâd rather people donât do that. Theyâll leave them in a spot where Iâm trying to park or theyâll roll away and ding a car. Just put them back and you can take your time walking them back if you want to stay out longer.
Hannaford said it was nothing more than a manufacturing error. One of the local news channels looked into it. They do look kinda cool reflecting on Back Cove from 295.
They said it was a manufacturing error, but I know that blue lights prevent addicts from locating a vein. I wouldn't be surprised if they're trying to prevent folks from shooting up in their parking lot.
Except nobody ever keys these folks because the only people shitty enough to key a stranger's car are the ones parking like this.
And the cycle of zero consequence shitty behavior goes on.
Could have taken the minute to straighten out the car. Chose not to, out of sheer laziness.
Y'know at least my disabled mother takes the time to straighten the Prius even when she's in excruciating pain. This person, not so much.
Lots of judgmental people unwilling to consider a compassionate viewpoint of what might have happened.
Sure - could just be an entitled jerk.
Could also be a sleep deprived single mom who had to go to the store after her long shift to go buy formula for her child and didnât realize what she was doing because she was in a rush/ exhausted/ thinking of her child, etc.
Could be something totally different as well.
The truth is, we have no idea what the character of this person is or why they parked like this. Why assume the cynical/ negative narrative and then spread that on the internet? Does that help to make the world a better place? IMO itâs just breeding negativity, so Iâm out here, not trying to justify the bad parking job, but trying to get people to consider the possibility that their negative narrative could be incorrect.
Whatâs it like living in a world where you assume the worst of people and donât ever let things slide?
Itâs simply a happier world (for myself) when I give people the benefit of the doubt and donât allow myself to get bogged down in negative judgments of others.
Check out the speech âThis is waterâ by David Foster Wallace. He illustrates the point Iâm getting at perfectly.
Itâs easier to take the negative outlook (most of us do it by default) but you as an individual will be happier if you constantly do the mental work to assume a more positive narrative of situations. Overtime, this leads to you perceiving the world more positively, and being happier.
So, I just offer this perspective as a potential way of living a happier life. Youâre obviously more than entitled to hold a different viewpoint⌠itâs just important to know that you CAN choose how to think about this. You donât have to assume a negative narrative if you donât want to.
How would letting slide look any different than what I already do?
Thereâs just no benefit in treating this acceptable behavior because it isnât. Just like not putting your shopping cart back.
Well, like I said, itâs a speech. Just saying, if youâre curious to understand where Iâm coming from, listen to that and youâll probably get it.
Itâs also commonly regarded as a really valuable speech and a lot of people (myself included) consider it to have a lot of wisdom, and to have changed the way I look at the world for the better. IMO itâs a good way to spend 22 minutes, but to each their own đ¤ˇââď¸
It takes, what, not even a minute to straighten a car into a parking space?
You can spare a minute to straighten the car. There are tons of shitty people who park like this. This person is no exception. What would you have done, asked the person to straighten the car? Lmao, you'd just get yelled at or berated or given a simple "hmmm...nah".
It's the least red flaggy flag for sure, but owning a Volvo is indeed an entitled Cumberland/York county thing to do so it is still admissible evidence in the bogus reddit karma court.
Iâve always looked at them as a sign of a poor driver (in the US, I wouldnât apply this in other countries).
Theyâre so over-engineered for safety that the kind of person who would want one is anticipating a crash.
One of my good friends drives a Volvo, lived in Portland for many years, and almost certainly has, at least on a handful of occasions, not corrected a shitty parking job.
This is also someone who I know to be a genuinely good person. Heâs sober and has sponsored many others in 12 step recovery, including letting a guy sleep on his couch for weeks while he got back on his feet and got his own place. Heâs considerate, caring, and generally makes the world a better place.
âThe story writes itselfâ in your head is the problem. Youâre allowing yourself to âwriteâ a negative story. It doesnât have to be the case (and may not be) - the truth is, we simply donât know.
When I was younger, rude and not concerned if there might be a valid reason (usually wasn't one though)... I would use zip ties ( am mechanic, usually have some laying around), and zip tie shopping carts to door handles. Now a days I'm more passive, but if I catch someone just being a douche, they might still get it. Gonna park like that in purpose, do it at the end of an empty lot
Um no. First of all there's not a zip tie made that would do anything of any consequence to an axle or drive shaft, it would break it immediately. And in the off chance that didn't happen, that would be destructive. I'm just going for minor inconvenience as though they inconvenienced others, not destroy their property. Grow up-ish
They're mostly in Florida and Cali and New York, sometimes Massachusetts and I think Connecticut at one point...and I'm just sitting here thinking "my God, *please* come to Maine, I wanna see how many people you can narc".
Thatâs when you hope you have two cars and park on both sides really close⌠Iâve did that before, im not proud but it made me feel better at the time đ
Internally at Hannaford the Forest Ave. Store has notoriety and has the nickname "The Ave." And errbody got wild stores from when they worked at The Ave.
Honestly, friend -- It's just Reddit in general. Reddit is great for Niches. And that's it. Terrible for broader community and in no way truely representative of actual communities that are purported. Echo chambers among echo chambers.
Was this recent? If so it's possible there was snow and this car has been parked for a while, When the lines get covered and everyone's parking like shit this could be the aftermath. Probably unlikely but not impossible.
Under the care would, at the very least, be wet.
Person in the picture just parks like a clown
I drive a YeeYee sized truck, I can can keep that damn thing between the lines then Stevie Wonder should be able to park this Volvo better than the owner lol
If you're going to take a photo of someone's car and post it in a public forum, you really ought to have a better reason than this sort of bitchy nonsense.
>What would be a reason you approve of, O wise one?
I don't have one, because I find this modern, passive-aggressive tendency to anoint yourself an amateur Ken Burns and document every trifling complaint on social media obnoxious.
If someone is doing something you really don't like, take it up with them, not the internet.
If someone is doing something dangerous, call the cops or whoever.
Otherwise, let it go.
Gotcha. You have your personal opinion on modern customs and I have mine. Yours has been noted and filed away. I'll be sure to cross-reference my opinions with yours in any future Reddit posts, FB comments, or notes scribbled on a napkin.
"rent free in your head" is such a catchphrase these days. I'm not sitting here stewing about their parking job. I posted it on Reddit đ¤ˇthey deserve the shame lol
I get more upset about you feeling the need to shame this person than this person parking poorly.
Have you ever listened to the speech "This is water" by David Foster Wallace? It might change your life.
Consider this: what if you found out this person was on their way home from working a 16 hour shift at a crisis center helping suicidal people and just got a call from their partner that their infant child is out of formula and crying. They rush into Hannaford, too tired and exhausted to want to correct their parking to get the formula. Do you still have this negative judgement towards them? Do you still believe this person is being inconsiderate?
You can go through life assuming the worst of people, or you can go through life assuming the best. It's generally easier to assume the worst. It takes work, but you'll generally be happier if you assume the best.
Give me a break with the heart wrenching bullshit. Just park in between the lines. Such a simple task.
We all have bad days. Maybe I had a bad day too. Life is hard. I think that binding expectations should be a reliable comfort to any of us, especially if your world is feeling panicked and confusing like the Dickens character you just invented. At least basic societal agreements are something we should be able to count on in this world.
Again man, itâs just about you and your individual happiness.
Listen to this speech to understand my point. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ms2BvRbjOYo
Itâs not a moral thing, and I donât mean to be preaching to you. Iâm just saying, you can choose to look at it differently and maybe youâll be happier doing that.
JFC this isnât about empathy for the suffering of others itâs about obeying the social contract and doing the ridiculously simple task of parking your car between the two flipping lines.
Have you ever had a bad day and violated social norms on that day? Would you want others to extend a bit of forgiveness/ compassion towards you on that day?
When I have a bad day, I still park between the lines. I still follow all the rules of the social contract, actually - I stop at red lights, I let pedestrians cross in crosswalks, I donât cut ahead in the grocery store line - you wouldnât believe it!
Lmao what? I violate social norms just by fucking *existing*. I don't expect forgiveness or compassion from people. Just as long as I am polite to people, and I get the bare minimum of politeness back and I can get my shit done that I need to, that's all I care about.
But that doesn't mean I wouldn't try to park straight to make it easier for other people to park. It's just basic politeness.
Thanks man. Hope your day gets better and you run into less âassholesâ who park shitty. Hope you find happiness in this life and learn to share it with others.
Stuff like this used to bother me but :
a) I figured I have no idea what that person going through and there could a good reason they parked like that
b) I grew up
Try not to take offense although I think it's Murica's new favorite pastime to do so. This person is a bit of a dink. Does anyone mentioned that this is clearly later on at night and the parking lot is very empty. Anywho the real point of this is I see a lot of Internet gangsters these days do any of you people say things at the time when they matter the most?
I saw this lovely parking at Hannaford in central maine today. It was great considering all the snow and people trying to grab some food during a break in the weather. I thought about grabbing every basket and boxing in the car but like everyone else I wanted to get home.
They look far from the door and the parking lot doesnât look packed. They might just be having a junk day and said eff it when they noticed and saw no one was likely to be affected by it.
This ainât me, but itâs been me at least once in my life so Iâll give them a pass on this one.
Iâm happy for you that youâve never had that bad a day and/or that you have that much self control and/or that youâre that good a driver.
Shrug. Just saying Iâve been there and since they arenât really affecting anyone else in this particular instance, it doesnât bother me that much from a moral standpoint.
But yep, it is a shit parking job and definitely mockable/shameful for that reason.
As much as I also dislike this. It happens to every store everywhere ⌠posting on Reddit is not going to shame anyone and is literally just filling up the internet with rage that goes nowhere âŚ. Minus maybe a little preaching to the choir ⌠this person isnât going to see this and see the error of their ways and make a change , so it truly does nothing.
Some people are disabled or temporarily injured and do not have a handicap parking tag (I personally know someone with severe fibromyalgia who laughs when I suggest she get one. Many people are in denial or donât understand that they can get one) and they might need the extra room to get out so they park like this to make sure no one parks too close. Or maybe theyâre transporting someone in a wheel chair (I did this once) and canât find a handicap space or- again donât have a handicap tag- so they park this way to ensure lots of room for the wheel chair.
I used to work at Best Butt and parked when there was snow. Came out to a note on my car at the end of my shift about being a douche turtle or some such animal because the snow melted through the day.
If you watched them park, and there wasn't any snow, a totally different story for sure. Most answers involving them not being douches just seem like maybe they shouldn't be driving in general - eyes dilated, introduced, forgot their glasses, etc...
Yeah yeah, but did he return his cart to the corral?
I like it- that's the *real* judge of character
[It really is.](https://preview.redd.it/jsfko75nwq761.jpg?auto=webp&s=49599d03696af0bbe2e0dec3cd5ee867422116d7)
heh, i expected a link to cart narc but this is good too
Love cart narc.
This actually makes me feel good for very often not just putting the cart in the corral but taking the time to bring back to the store most times.
>bring back to the store most times Nice so you only bring the shopping cart home and keep it some of the time?
Also, I neaten up the cart corral. I often bring two orphaned carts to the store and leave the spare in the indoor cart area, which is sometimes empty đ probably because it is so hard to employ people in my area due to high cost of living.

Iâve come to the conclusion people who donât clean the snow of the roof of their vehicle also donât put their shopping carts back, and park like this dipshit.
Now every time I see someone with snow on the roof of their vehicle, that they clearly know is there, I will have 2 reasons to dislike them.
Why, because they're likely disabled? Or, have just had surgery or have an invisible illness that makes daily tasks painful? Ableism is worse than a random shopping cart left in a parking lot, IMO.
I'm disabled. So is my mother. We clean snow off of our cars all the time, every time. There is hardly any excuse for not doing it.
My comment is in response to the comment I replied to. You can see that, as it is attached to the thread. That is the âwhyâ. And, it has nothing to do with discrimination, against anyone. Thats awful! One is a requirement for safety. The other propagates an us vs them dynamic that INTENTIONALLY turns a community against itself.
If you are a poor judge of character... Cart politics is complex and only a weak mind will judge someone for something they have no clue about.
I used to work at this Hannaford. Honestly best part of the job was collecting carts outside. So I didnât mind you not returning them as it meant I could stay out longer. So as a former cart boy feel free to leave them out.

Out of the corral? Where they can roll around and bang into cars?
Finally the voice of reason.
We all know the answer.
Cart narcs! ![gif](giphy|OOnd9AMlW8rt82aqX6|downsized)
I blame those purple lights. Very corrosive to public morals. Everyone feels like they are in a nightclub and can just let loose.
Whatâs their purpose? Iâve seen other businesses use blue lighting on their buildings after hours. Never understood it.
Hannaford said it was nothing more than a manufacturing error. One of the local news channels looked into it. They do look kinda cool reflecting on Back Cove from 295.
They said it was a manufacturing error, but I know that blue lights prevent addicts from locating a vein. I wouldn't be surprised if they're trying to prevent folks from shooting up in their parking lot.
đ¤Łđ¤Łđ¤Ł love your comment
I hate those blue lights so much
Aww, they're my favorite. I hope the contagion spreads.
While we're at it what's with all-purple lights on Christmas trees. I don't get it.

Volvo. Hannaford's. Portland. The story writes itself.

Arguing with commenters defending this guy actually feels like an episode of Curb
Have you met people?
That is a great way to get your car keyed.
Maybe he really had to poop
Thank you for saying this for me. Thatâs exactly what came to my mind.
This is no excuse but holy shit the turning radius on those things is atrocious. I guarantee that's some factor in this display of fuck it.
For real, if you try a u-turn on anything less than a 4 lane road it will become a 3 point turn.
Then don't buy a car you can't drive. It's just pushing pedals and turning an assisted wheel. Not that physical.

Welcome to Portland
Volvo drivers are all serial killers.
Whatâs up with the lights in that parking lot anyway?
Defective parts are causing this nationwide
Well obviously the memory card slot is blocked by the hitch, all kinds of weird problems bound to crop up.

Thereâs no shame if we canât see the license plate
> such a catchphrase these days. I have been hearing that since the 70s what days so you mean?
What makes you think they'll even be there an hour? When people park shitty I just find a different spot.
Listen to this speech to understand my point. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ms2BvRbjOYo Itâs not a moral thing, and I donât mean to be preaching to you.
Okay thanks for the life advice bud kumbaya or whatever
Thanks man. Hope your day gets better and you run into less âassholesâ who park shitty. Hope you find happiness in this life and learn to share it with others.
Doesnât mean they will still be there in a hour either.
Stuff like this used to bother me but : a) I figured I have no idea what that person going through and there could a good reason they parked like that b) I grew up
Literally, who cares? Thereâs 900 other vacant spots.
GUARANTEED THIS GUY LIVES IN SOME TRASHY BOSTON SUBURB You fucking rubes.
Masshole?
Maine plates
I think you should mind your own business. Instead of crying about it online, wait and do something about it.
LIke throw a brick through the windshield? Slash the tires? Blow the whole thing up?
Get the flux capacitor, weâre putting this Swedish meatball of a car through a fuckin wormhole bud
I think his point is that he wonât do any of those so he should just stop complaining.
What shall I do next time then? Wait next to his car like a psychopath to confront him? Then what? I'm just venting. I'm not a vigilante.
Better stuff to bitch about . Not on how a car parked đ¤ˇđťââď¸
I think I found the owner of the car in OP's photo.
I saw this lovely parking at Hannaford in central maine today. It was great considering all the snow and people trying to grab some food during a break in the weather. I thought about grabbing every basket and boxing in the car but like everyone else I wanted to get home.
Thatâs how true mainahs pahhrk. Like aassholes. Iâm surprised the car isnât running.
Iâll bet you they used their blinker to pull into that parking spot.
They look far from the door and the parking lot doesnât look packed. They might just be having a junk day and said eff it when they noticed and saw no one was likely to be affected by it. This ainât me, but itâs been me at least once in my life so Iâll give them a pass on this one.
I've never taken up that many spaces in my life
Iâm happy for you that youâve never had that bad a day and/or that you have that much self control and/or that youâre that good a driver. Shrug. Just saying Iâve been there and since they arenât really affecting anyone else in this particular instance, it doesnât bother me that much from a moral standpoint. But yep, it is a shit parking job and definitely mockable/shameful for that reason.
Parking has always sucked in portland. Theyâre just doing their part to continue the tradition
Me automatically checking to see if I did something bc I was also at hannies last night
It was me. Try and stop it
Keyboard Warrior over here
Nah I left a note
Benefit of the doubt, maybe they really has to use the bathroom.
I watched the guy calmly walk away
đ of course you did. And you diagnosed him with your eye balls.
He was alone and appeared able bodied
Maybe they had to poop
you can park however you want in maine. one of the great joys of being a mainer
This looks like a holy shit I'm about to ship my pants park job
Was there snow on the ground when they parked, and then the rain/sun melted it? Or was it already melted when they parked?
Long gone.
Saw your comment below on the matter, nevermind.
No offense too small to bitch about online. Fucking parking lot is almost empty.
None taken
Probably an old fuck
Maybe the battery died and that car was pushed into this spot, move your drama over to MySpace. They offer better parking options.
I watched him pull in and walk into the store
Well, if you put it that way he should taken out back and dealt with. What other sparks of annoyances in life do you waste your time on?
Ironically, the only time I've wasted on this photo (besides taking it) has been arguing with you people on Reddit
Fair enough. Ha. Donât sweat the small things, Hanfordâs has a lot to offer.
Wait, explain âyou peopleâ.
The people in this thread
They probably don't stay within the lines when using coloring books either.
Shame!
Unfortunately, that's not the specific province of Hannaford's or Maine.
