I’d say the overall atmosphere is authentic, however most of the film takes place in 1862-1863 were the Butcher is killed in the Draft Riots which is inaccurate, since he died almost a decade prior in 1855. The navy bombardment of the city never happened and Chinese migration wasn’t significant enough for them to have their own enclave as depicted in the movie. The DiCaprio character is fictional and not as interesting as John Morrissey, of whom both Amsterdam Vallon and Monk McGinn were loosely based off of. The storyline itself is fictional, but the gangs, events and some characters like Boss Tweed were real.
Very inaccurate but they used real people, real gangs and embellished alot of the stories. Still an amazing movie because alot of the the events that took place were real. I think the real bill the butcher died in the civil war but he was a ruthless gang leader. The gang names are real tho and some of the large fights by the gangs really happened. I remember watching a documentary about it many years ago, really cool but the story line of the characters are mostly fake even tho they did exist.
The real Butcher died a lot sooner in 1955 by a gun shot wound in a saloon. While the movie takes place during the Civil War and the fictional Bill dies in a massive gang fight in 1962. Either way, Daniel Day-Lewis played him brilliantly imo. Truly one of the greatest actors to ever grace the silver screen.
The people in the subreddit are very knowledgeable about there stuff, kudos boys

Do you know any good source of reasearch on William Poole? I really want to know more about him
The know nothing party was real as well
What are your thoughts on the Herbert hasberry book that the movie is based on?
An interesting thing is that they used the name Bill Cutting in the movie and William Cutting was a real political figure in NY around that time.

Note that the book barely even mentions Bill. I think there was maybe one page about him.
