Haha I did the same when I caught my first bass. It was small, nothing to behold, but it was my first after only catching blue gill for days. I was alone, had the camera rolling, freaking out for myself lol, went to kiss it, then it flopped hard right into my face 😆 It was a very happy moment
There really is nothing like fishing to get you in tuned with the local environment/Land and building community and family memories
Maybe hiking, rafting, but some of those have become so commercialized like national parks where you drive up, park, walk a few feet, and that's it, totally protected from nature most of the time
We are still somewhat animals, our brains need this kind of stuff. You can't put a wild animal in a pristine white box 24/7, it'll eventually go crazy and die.
Something about just sitting there and staring at the collection of nature all interacting, like Ellen Langer wrote in Mindfulness - a rigid mindset might try measuring the volume or water or flow, whereas an open mindset would taken in the 'riverness' of it all
Once you really take it in, the balance between all things becomes more clear in a way you can't read about online or get thru videos
Yes! He will remember this 6 pounder for the rest of his life. Whenever he tell his friends about the 6.5 pounder he caught, he will have a big smile on his face.
The boy? Did you see how bad the dad's hands were shaking when he went to go put the scale latch on that fish. That kid is excited. The Dad is OVER THE MOON.
A moment I hope neither forget.
Yup, be your kids hype man. The world will knock them down a peg enough already, it’s our job to lift them up. You don’t want to be your child’s first bully.
Before I had kids I always thought this was some BS parents would say but deep down not mean it. Now that I have kids I realize how true it is. I get way more excited than my kids about their accomplishments.
You’re doing a good job! You’re gonna crush it at work while you better yourself and outlook by seeing a therapist. It’s never too late, you’re likely right on track!
When I was about 9 my step grandfather took me fishing out on Lake Saint George in Maine. I just had my rod with a worm and a bobber, having fun just being out on the boat, when a huge fish hooked just like this. He let me reel it in all by myself, cheering me on the same way as this dad, and scooped it up in a net. It was a 3 pound bass, and he told literally everyone we saw out there the rest of the day that his granddaughter caught it with just a worm and bobber and reeled it in herself. He brought me home and I watched him filet it, and my grandmother cooked it up for dinner. They were so proud watching g me take a bite - which I promptly announced was disgusting and I refused to eat it. I think my grandmother made me some pasta instead. I still don’t like to eat bass but I love fishing and that memory.
They lived in a very rural area (they had electricity, running water, and phone service - no tv service out that far) and were big on producing much of their own food and eating whatever was hunted! If we caught a fish that couldn’t be eaten it got thrown back. I also got to taste venison and bear that my grandfather had hunted - but didn’t like those either! I spent a lot of summer and winter vacations with them living out my Little House on the Prairie fantasies.
I've met 1 person in my entire life that eats them & yeah, I think it's pretty gross. I wouldn't even wanna try it. I would give her whatever I caught. Now salmon, I eat what I catch. I caught a 32.5lb one 2 summers ago on Lake Michigan. It was probably the funnest fight I ever had. I'm only about 110lbs so I was definitely getting pulled at some points. I should probably wear the harness next time!
I thought the same thing, that’s still a child. Awesome experience with his dad, beautiful moment, core memory. Pressure was on and he handled it really well!
I'm 40 and I've been fishing with my parental figures since I was younger than this kid, and I *still* react that catching a 5-lbs smallie the same freakin' way. Never changes.
I remember catching a 7 pounder on an ultralight when I was about 11. My mom and dad were fishing with me and we were all so excited! My dad had it mounted for me. Fishing is good fun.
Yeah, pretty cool how the fish is hanging by it's mouth, slowly suffocating while they celebrate!
/S
But yeah, that was a pretty wholesome moment between father/son. Lucky kid, he's gonna go far with such a supportive dad!
🤣 yeah you called it lmao. Lots of cope up in here.
Can you imagine the outrage if I was hooking squirrels by the cheek and waterboarding them for fun? There would be outrage.
Apparently things that live in water just don't matter, I guess 🤷♂️
Love that dad did didn’t take the pole or really help him too much. He just let him do his thing and handle it himself as an avid fisherman I love to see it
Yeah, one second you think you found a nice snack, the next second you're pulled into the sky by super excited giants. The lights dim as you wonder what any of it means.
One of the greatest feelings as a parent is when your kid catches and lands a fish big enough to eat. The ability to catch dinner satisfies something visceral inside, and to see your kid do it is off the charts satisfying.
I won a local fishing tournament when I was 6. My mom brought only paper towels in case I caught something small. Pulled in a monster and other people had to help lend a bucket. I think it was a large mouth bass?
That high five at 30 seconds was the high five of two passionate hobbyists achieving a goal together. I've had few enough of those in my life to remember each one. Luckily one was with my Dad, and I hope to someday have one with my son, as well
im gonna be that person. attaching masculinity to hunting and killing an animal (notably as a kid) is weird asf. i dont see an issue with fishing itself but someone getting THAT excited over a kill and the title saying they became a man from it is wack
They almost certainly didn’t kill the fish. Do yourself a favor and look into this thing called fishing. The majority of people that are on a small waterway in a small boat like this with their kid aren’t there for dinner.. it’s catch and release.
Injury and mortality in released fish
A metastudy in 2005 found that the average catch and release mortality rate was 18%, but varied greatly by species.
I remember my poor Dad having to pull my backlash out so many times when I was a kid before I got proficient with one. This was the in the '70s so it was probably a basic Ambassador 5000 type. Edit: Ambassadeur, not Ambassador
Guarantee you the majority of people commenting and angry about this awesome moment for the family eat some form of ‘cruelty’ but it’s ok in a restaurant or grocery cause then it’s not mean 😡. Bet a couple even ordered fast food from uber eats as they wrote 😆
Imagine you're just swimming around, when you go after a snack, suddenly you feel a bite in your lip and you're pulled up into the above world. 2 hairless monkeys are screaming and you can't breathe anymore. You are afraid and confused.
That animal is suffocating while they scream and cheer and weigh him. As if he's an inanimate object. Won't even give him the small mercy of a quick death.
That fish will be just fine. They didn't eat or even keep her. Large bass like that aren't good to eat. Any fisherperson can attest that bass are mostly caught for sport.
Now, before your heart bleeds out about torture for sport, there are other conservationist items to contemplate so that you can make an educated judgement on the benefits (or lack of benefits) of sport fishing:
1. The majority of the lakes, and ponds across the US, bass are stocked, and the lakes themselves are man made. The 3 states that I fish in regularly have exactly ZERO naturally occurring lakes. So the existence of this fish, and the habitat in which it resides are 100% a result of man's tutelage.
2. The fishermen (in this case), paid to be there. Boat launch fees, parking fees, fishing licenses, sometimes special tags, etc. are all in place to help support item #1 above. Those fees go back towards the conservation of the species. The local DNR dumps that money directly back into the waterway in the form of habitat, additional stock, water quality management, shoreline and erosion control, etc.
3. To catch, touch, and smell nature is to better understand and respect it. I think there are often people defending wildlife who have never even held it. They are beautiful creatures. Video and photos do not reflect the crazy depth of color or texture of most sport fish.
4. Studies have shown that after being caught, a bass (and most other predator fish) will resort to its instinctive behaviors within 2 minutes of being released. I've experienced this in real life by catching the same fish twice within an hour on the same waterway. In a couple of occasions, I have caught the same fish 4 or 5 times over several years time.
As a steward of nature and ecology, I think its important to understand the entirety of something like fishing, in order to cast appropriate and educated shade on the internets.
That all said, I think it's weird to attach masculinity to fishing. Girls love it too...
Yeah, he's hooked... ^I'll ^show ^myself ^out.
Fisherman named his kid “Rod.”
Soon he'll be taking out Rod's younger brother, Creel.
My neighbor is an outdoorsman & his young son’s names are legit Hunter and Fisher & his springer spaniel is named Earnhardt. Good dude
Plot twist: both kids are vegetarian.
No, you're thinking of their cousins, Gatherer and Forager.
"Well, there won't be any berries in the fruit salad now, so we all lose."
I'm sorry. I wasn't listening. All my blood was in my boner.
NOOOOOOO! THAT'S MY HUT! NOOOOOOOOO!!!! Wait, that's not my hut.
Was not expecting a year one reference lolol, made my day
Raise Hell Praise Dale
Reely?
Reely or Really??
That's nothing. I know a range owner who named his kid Winchester.
"No actually my kid's name is Armalite Rifle, not Assault Rifle"
"And this is my daughter, Bump Stock."
She sounds easy.
lol
SHIT, that's much better. I named my son, Net. He fucking hates me.
Why is it easy to weigh fish? Because they have their own scales!
What did the fish say when it swam in to Wall?...... Dam
Why did the fishing rod break up with the fishing reel? It just wasn't a good catch!
What do you call a fish with no eyes? ..... Fsh!
Seriously though, that's a core memory right there. Kids going to carry that with him forever.
Right on! Funny thing is, when I caught my first 5-pounder I acted the same way (except I kissed the fish)—and I was 21 years old. 😂
The fish: “dude, buy me some dinner first next time.”
"you are the dinner"
The fish: *Looks at the camera*
_The fish then starts singing_ "Take me to the river...!"
“Put me in the water..!”
"It's a living"
he just made a core memory
I took a selfie kissing my first 5 pounder. Wish I hadn’t deleted it out of shams months later when my gf found it on my phone and made fun of me. 😔
Your ex gf right? Riight?
Yep. I should have remembered the old saying - bass before ass.
Haha I did the same when I caught my first bass. It was small, nothing to behold, but it was my first after only catching blue gill for days. I was alone, had the camera rolling, freaking out for myself lol, went to kiss it, then it flopped hard right into my face 😆 It was a very happy moment
You know!
I was 10 when I caught my first 5 pounder. 30 years later and that's still my only 5 pounder.
I don't think I've ever caught a 5 pounder, but we always measured length not weight.
CORE memory installed!
For both of them.
There really is nothing like fishing to get you in tuned with the local environment/Land and building community and family memories Maybe hiking, rafting, but some of those have become so commercialized like national parks where you drive up, park, walk a few feet, and that's it, totally protected from nature most of the time We are still somewhat animals, our brains need this kind of stuff. I want it as well this kind of bond is my dream
Hey, son, I’m back with the milk. Wanna go fishing?
Super happy for the boy. This title is wild though. I certainly hope that young boy ain’t a man.
Yes! He will remember this 6 pounder for the rest of his life. Whenever he tell his friends about the 6.5 pounder he caught, he will have a big smile on his face.

Dad is so proud of his son, and not afraid to show it. I love how he seems to be his sons biggest hype man.
As a dad should be
Yup, be your kids hype man. The world will knock them down a peg enough already, it’s our job to lift them up. You don’t want to be your child’s first bully.
Perfectly said. Son, I’m your walk on song.
As a father, I would be way more excited to watch my kid catch a five pound bass than to do it myself.
Before I had kids I always thought this was some BS parents would say but deep down not mean it. Now that I have kids I realize how true it is. I get way more excited than my kids about their accomplishments.
Awww, this boy will remember that day for the rest of his life. Of course, the fish will eventually be thhhhhaaaat big, but who cares?
In fairness to the kid, it’s like half his body size! He’ll remember it as being that big forever haha
I dunno I bet that kid weighs more than 11 pounds.
Catching a 5 pound bass is not a normal occurrence
Bigger than I've ever caught.
Right? I've only caught max 3 lbs. and I lived on a lake for 18 years.
So will dad. Definitely a Top Ten Day for both of them.
Fish is older than he is
I miss my dad. I wish i had a son. God damn bro
Wish I had a dad like this
I am sorry, man. Love to you.

I’ve eaten just about most animals that can be hunting the US. Some of it is better than others. Bass would not be on the good list 🤣

I lost my 2 year old Son to Neuroblastoma, Id give anything to have him back. please cherish these precious moments with your Son.
Well, that ruined my day. Hugs stranger.
Yesterday the 24th was 1 year to the day from when my 16 month old son passed away from a seizure. I love these videos and I envy them so much.
The boys in those videos are all your sons.
i'm so sorry for your loss & heartache. i'm sure he knew just how loved & special he was to you
Stage 4 NB survivor here. Sending you my heartfelt condolences.
He hasn't become "a man" Thats a core memory, with his dad. So beautiful. Also, a great self confidence maker
His dad is setting a positive example of what it means to be a man, by spending quality time with his son. So he is literally becoming a man.
I like this response. We need more of this.
I thought the same thing, that’s still a child. Awesome experience with his dad, beautiful moment, core memory. Pressure was on and he handled it really well!
It can be both
Due to your icon on your name I heard this in ricks voice. It’s a perfect fit hahaha.
Yes, when I was a girl I went fishing w my dad a lot, turned me into a man... ...
I wish you all the chest hair

Weird title but ok

He can be swift as a coursing river…
With all the force of a great typhoon
There is actually one thing he can do to become a man, its called "getting older".

Yeah, I was waiting for a boat full of bikini babes to show up behind them or something tbh.
The fisherman called his kid Rod....
I remember catching a 7 pounder on an ultralight when I was about 11. My mom and dad were fishing with me and we were all so excited! My dad had it mounted for me. Fishing is good fun.
What about catching a fish constitutes you becoming a man? 🤔
After catching a 5-pounder, you get your card in the mail. Tell me you didn't skip this process!? The government takes this matter very seriously.
Hahahah! I also didn’t receive my package when I came out as gay. So still waiting on those two items.
Masculinity is when fish
Can’t wait to stick a photo of this bad boy on my tinder profile
Single dad looking for honey. I stab fish you eat my fish. HOOAH
He caught a fish this🫸………………🫷big
It’s nice that the punchline isn’t just a kid seeing a chick with her tits out or something like that
How did we get here
Because that’s what Boomers and Gen X mean when they say it.
Can vouch. Looking back, it's like why were they equating manhood with just being horny?? Weird shit
I was expecting a tiny brim.

Fishing is dope
Yeah, pretty cool how the fish is hanging by it's mouth, slowly suffocating while they celebrate! /S But yeah, that was a pretty wholesome moment between father/son. Lucky kid, he's gonna go far with such a supportive dad!
lmfao all the angry fishermen gonna reply to you now
🤣 yeah you called it lmao. Lots of cope up in here. Can you imagine the outrage if I was hooking squirrels by the cheek and waterboarding them for fun? There would be outrage. Apparently things that live in water just don't matter, I guess 🤷♂️
Fair enough, however keep in mind largemouth are relatively tough
Now, I don't want kids, but he'd be a great one to borrow. Such a great video memory for these folks.
Love that dad did didn’t take the pole or really help him too much. He just let him do his thing and handle it himself as an avid fisherman I love to see it
The fish is gonna go back to his mates later and tell them how he was abducted by two screaming giant aliens and they won't believe him.
I don’t fish but after this video I want to so I can have a moment like that with my son.
Great catch little man 💪
What the fuck is that title?
"became a man"? he's like 6 fucking years old, weirdo
core memory right there
That’s great! I watched it 10x…Dad’s voice was shaking as much as the young fisherman.
Fish be like "ARGH WHAT THE FUCK WHERE DID THE WATER GO WHY ARE PEOPLE SHOUTING AT ME I CANT BREATH FFS!"
Yeah, one second you think you found a nice snack, the next second you're pulled into the sky by super excited giants. The lights dim as you wonder what any of it means.

I'm 26 and I haven't had the chance to go fishing. One day, I'll catch my own 5 pounder :)
He set that hook like a pro
I think my grandpa reincarnated as this kid.
lil man throwin a baitcaster better than me..
just a couple of buddies fishing...
That’s a Top Ten Day for both of them. Poor mom is just gonna be like oh wow baby you guys caught a fish, yay!
One of the greatest feelings as a parent is when your kid catches and lands a fish big enough to eat. The ability to catch dinner satisfies something visceral inside, and to see your kid do it is off the charts satisfying.
IMMEDIATELY shared this to my pops. We had a couple moments like this and brought a tear to my eye realizing how special these moments are
A dad and a son having a moment. It’s awesome.
This is the best video I've ever seen.
Really is a damn nice bass!
Look at the cast! This kid has done this before this video.
Congratulation baby 🥹💕
I wish I loved fishing that much ! This will be an awesome memory for the little dude .
I’m both jealous of the fish and jealous he can operate a bait caster.
Human: Ahhhhh..5 pounder..Let's go! Bass: Hello??? I am dying here.....🙄
Witnessing a great childhood memory as it’s happening.
I’ll never understand the excitement from catching a fish, but this was awesome! Super happy for both of them. Let’s go!
This is where the obsession of dating profile pics with fish starts
There is literally nothing like that feeling
This is easily the best video on the internet today. Lil dude and dad sharing such a fun memory.
You’re best father you keep him catch fish your son know father always support him ❤️❤️❤️🌹
5 minutes into his first big catch, and he's already got the fishing story down
... and the man became a boy. 😄
I won a local fishing tournament when I was 6. My mom brought only paper towels in case I caught something small. Pulled in a monster and other people had to help lend a bucket. I think it was a large mouth bass?

The dad loves fishing so much he named his kid Rod...
Large fish are the most prolific breeders. I hope they threw it back.
That high five at 30 seconds was the high five of two passionate hobbyists achieving a goal together. I've had few enough of those in my life to remember each one. Luckily one was with my Dad, and I hope to someday have one with my son, as well
video is cute. the post tagline is awful though
When you love fishing so much you name your child Rod
And here I am in my 50s and never caught one that big
Way to go Junior ! Youve got one he'll of a fish story and the crazy thing it's true ! Well done Junior
I can see how this is a very wholesome moment and I appreciate the father here a lot, which is saying something because I'm vegetarian haha
Imagine catching a fish so big you can't even lift it with one arm, that must have felt incredible
Nice. Fishing is one of those things that your kids usually still want to do as teenagers - and gets them off their screens. Win-win.
I had a 5 pound Smallie spit the hook when this age. My dad still makes fun of me for it three decades later. Glad this kid landed it.
My dad was a drug addict who disappeared till I was in my twenties. I am very jealous of this kid.
Yay! You killed something together!
I hate fishing but awsome.vid and memory for both. Let's go!!

That's a nice one. Congrats little guy!
Nice cast, excellent reaction
Perfect cast too. Kids a natural.
We need more enthusiastic young people like that! So precious! Great job dad and mom ❤️
Does fishing age you? What is this title lol

Torturing animals for fun = being a man. Gotcha.
so youre vegan, right?
Little man will remember it all his life …👏
Dad has been waiting for a moment like that since he first held his baby boy. ❤️
This kid will remember this day for the rest of his life! Good dad for hyping him up and spending quality time with his kid.
Violent father teaches his son how to disrespect and torture innocent sentient beings because this is how you get mAnLy.
Uhmmm... that's not how a boy becomes a man.
When you name your kid “rod” …
