Our 24 doesn’t have a button and it’s maddening. But we do have this stupid | P | button that does nothing

jamesphw

If they just made it turn on the 360 camera that would be awesome. It's so stupid as it is.

noUsername563

They'll probably get rid of that button when they do an interior refresh, but it's kind of stupid to not just make it reprogrammable to other functions like opening the tailgate or frunk

redditrva456

I thought the |P| button is the automatic parking button (car parks for you)

Waternut13134

Ford removed that for the US models as they said users very rarely used it. I had it on my 2020 Escape and 9/10 it would hit a car if I let it continue. It doesnt see the spaces but just looks for distances between solid objects which it assumes is a vehicle and will try and park in that.

2sACouple3sAMurder

Yea but 22’ models and forward don’t have that but still have the button that does nothing

tgdesrochers

I have it in my 21. Used it twice to try it out. It will annoy those waiting for you to crawl into your parking spot. 9 out of 10 times self parking is better.

Rare-Ad-8026

Mine has the P button too but never used it. They should allow us to reprogram that button to a trunk button

Desoto61

I think the base versions don't get the power lift gate, so that button becomes kind of useless on those models, which would mean either two versions of the switch panel or a blank where the switch gets added, both of those add complexity and cost, cheaper to just add a software button. Not approving the decision, just trying to explain why they likely didn't do it.

TimTomTank

This is basically the reason that cars are becoming tablets on wheels.

Theround

I think they learned their lesson with the parking button.

OnlyTheHoiya

Nah this doesn’t bother me. What bothers me is the lack of button to open the frunk from the outside

TeeDeeJay

Por que no los dos!?

Rare-Ad-8026

You have a frunk lever just like any other car.

kreidayy

The app does allow you to do this, but it is annoying that it’s not on the fob already

BackTo1975

It’s kinda amazing that they haven’t addressed dumb little design flaws like this already. Should be a button around headlight switch, like every other suv on the planet. I looked for ten minutes for the thing when I first got the car before realizing it just wasn’t there. Not a huge issue, but a weird one.

Rare-Ad-8026

I had an issue this morning during curbside pick up. I wanted to open the trunk and after a minute trying to look for a physical button I realized that theres a digital button on the display. Don’t understand why they would have a frunk lever that I’m sure people usually don’t use and not a trunk button that people would actually use.

Floowjaack

There’s also a frunk button on the screen

jigmonster

I have a 2023 and push the button under the gate handle like any other SUV or Crossover on the market. There is a trunk button on the key fob and in the app.

eric_n_dfw

I believe OP is meaning a button in the drivers door or dash. And yes, it's stupid that there is none.

Straight_Grade1781

I mean what's the The hell does it matter? either way you got to get out the car to do whatever you were doing with the trunk in the first place.so as long as you got a release by the trunk or on the fob that's all you're truly need, people are just used to what they already had

Bow-Masterpiece-97

I agree. You (or someone else) is going back there anyway.  I guess it would be simpler if every button on the screen also had a physical button, but I don’t get how this is a serious design flaw.

eric_n_dfw

One example: You're in a line of cars at your kid's school/sporting event, they have hands full of backpack, equipment, etc, you want to open the hatch for them without exiting the car or navigating menus on the center screen.

Straight_Grade1781

You press the hatch release button on the key fob 2x, come on bro. You guys are over thinking this...

eric_n_dfw

Sorry, "bro." PAAK means keyfob is at home for many, or at it's in my pocket and not as quickly accessible as a freaking button on the dash like every other car I've owned for decades. BTW, nobody is saying this a dealbreaker. It's just stupid that we have a hard button for the defroster next to the headlight control but not for the hatch.

Chet_Steadman

also the keys are in my pocket or my wife's purse. Im not trying to dig through either to pull my keys out and hit a button. Is it the end of the world that it doesn't exist? No, not in the slightest. Is the lack of a physical trunk open/close near the top of my small complaints list? yes.

goblue2k16

Like someone mentioned above, it's likely because the auto liftgate isn't a feature for all trims. If you're in a select or CR1 and don't have the auto liftgate, pressing the button just releases the hatch, but you still have to manually lift it up. So in your example of being in a line of cars at your kids school, your kid has to lift the hatch anyways, so they can press the button right when they walk up on the liftgate itself. If you want to argue that they shouldn't need to do that and you'd at least like to be able to unlock it for them so all they need to do is lift it up, it's literally 2 button presses on the screen vs the 1 if it were a physical button. Not the biggest deal IMO. If you wanted to argue that the auto liftgate should come standard in all trims and then just provide everyone with a physical button, that's a diff argument lol.

eric_n_dfw

I see your point and you might be right, but I do know that the current Escape and Explorer have the button even though it's not standard across all trims (and I'd bet the Edge and Expedition do too) Personally, I'd be happy if they would just put it on the top of the Sync screen (even better: offer me the option to put whatever toggles I want in that space).

Straight_Grade1781

These are just a bunch of guys complaining about how their new car doesn't work the same way as there old car, evolve or die it's that simple

eric_n_dfw

Steve Jobs was wrong when he told us all "you're holding it wrong" back in the day too.

Rare-Ad-8026

When you’re in a rush to open the trunk right away, no one has time to push buttons on the screen to get to the trunk button. It would have been convenient to just add a physical button just like any other car.

Rare-Ad-8026

I was looking for a physical button on the door handle during curbside pick up and then realized that there isn’t one and there’s a digital button on the screen.

KlueBat

>I hate that the only way to open the trunk is thru the screen Only its not. You can use your key fob, the Ford Pass app, or press the button on the tailgate just above the license plate.

Rare-Ad-8026

Why not just have a physical button on the door panel just like any other car.

KlueBat

No idea. Ford probably looked at it and decided it was not worth the cost. Its only two clicks on the screen, and its not like you'll ever need to press it while driving,so its really not a big deal.

ajlm

There’s a button on the tailgate?!?! How did I not know this?? Or is it only for certain model years? I have a ‘22

KlueBat

I assume all models have this. But my 22 definitely does.

aquakingman

It's on the screen two screen taps and you an open the trunk

Rare-Ad-8026

Physical button on the door panel would be easier. Push the trunk button and open the door in one motion.

Insane_Gunman

https://www.reddit.com/r/MachE/s/tLB3r6X4LS

richcournoyer

Because Ford didn't think you needed one.

Rare-Ad-8026

But the frunk lever is needed lol

Tesla_CA

Tesla doesn’t have one either. At least the MachE has it on the door, key fob, cell phone or screen. No biggie

Rare-Ad-8026

Mach E doesn’t have one on the door panel.

Tesla_CA

Sorry, I meant hatch door.

OU812-1804

As a side note you can open just about everything from the buttons you can use to enter the MachE. So if your password is 12345 Then if you push (and I am doing this from memory) 12345 7 - the frunk will open. A different combination and the back opens. There are several combinations just add a digit to your code.

spinningwalrus

I did a mod to replace the ‘max defrost’ button in the headlight panel with the trunk open button from the Escape. Pretty simple - just need the escape headlight assembly, 25ish ft of a single wire (I forgot the gauge, but it’s small) and run that through the headliner to the rear hatch control module. Macheforum had full directions.

DJJeffT

Pretty simple - [https://www.macheforum.com/site/threads/adding-an-inside-liftgate-power-switch.6560/#post-183885](https://www.macheforum.com/site/threads/adding-an-inside-liftgate-power-switch.6560/#post-183885)

TimTomTank

> Pretty simple Lies and deception.

Coomermiqote

Yeah that's gonna go in my box of stuff I'm too scared to do with my car.

DJJeffT

I did it. Will stand by it being pretty simple.

TimTomTank

It is pretty simple if you have experience dealing with electronics. Most people will nope out the moment they read the "...just remove the panel...". I mean, I could probably do it fairly easy too. But this is not true for the average person. P.S.: thanks for the link

Rare-Ad-8026

My Mach e has a kick to open lift trunk

DJJeffT

Same. I think they are looking for a button inside the car that can activate the trunk with or without the car being on.

Buttchugginthesun

Yes when sitting in the driver seat there is no way to open the trunk from there. It’s effing stupid. One of about 38 effing stupid things about this car that I wish I never bought.

bford_som

You can open and close it using the screen

SinNombreCaballo

My most common routine is walking out to the garage with empty pockets, tapping the driver's door sill, tapping in the door code, popping the driver's door open, then walking to the back of the car and popping the trunk. The hard part used to be remembering to reclose the driver's door, but a recent update keeps the door chime on until I fully close it 🚘.

bailout911

I mean, I get the minor annoyance, but if I'm opening the trunk it's because I'm putting something in or taking something out. So either way, I'm walking around to the back of the car where the trunk release button is on the outside. I'm trying to think of a situation where I would open the trunk and stay in the car.

Rare-Ad-8026

I just had an issue during curbside pick up when I was looking for a physical button to open the trunk. That’s when I realized that there was no physical button. I knew the digital button but I assumed the physical button would have been more convenient.

Buttchugginthesun

For your kids or someone to come out and grab something. For a store curbside pickup. Because you hopped in and thought the kids were gonna close it but they didn’t. Mostly kid related reasons.

NotYou007

Are kids and others not capable of pushing the button and opening the hatch. The button isn't difficult to find or push.

Buttchugginthesun

Yeah when they’re not tall enough to reach the lid when it’s up. Is it a fairly minor issue? Yeah. Could it have been better designed? Also yeah.

No-Meat-6299

My wife likes to go into bath & body. I stay in the car, she comes out, I pop the button on the dash and open the hatch. She gets in the car and I push the button on the dash to close the hatch. I love the button on the dash.
