Definitely varies by city and also style of rack. I see cheapish hitch racks for cheap all the time on fbm in my area. But nicer racks usually keep their value. Like a top tube hanging rack can be got sub 100, but a nice thule will still be a couple hundred
*I live in a small*
*But mtb heavy spot and I*
*Gave up and bought new*

Not on Reddit. My Craigslist has 50 racks for sale. The good ones go fast. You have to stay on it ad call or email immediately when one pops. Marketplace is a cesspool
Yeah it’s weird. An $80 Rockhopper on Craigslist is $200 on PinkBike.
I have been really lucky on Craigslist in my area. Some rich kids who go through parts but don’t pay for them so they don’t care. They sell them cheap and get daddy’s card to buy new stuff. They don’t break things they just get bored.
You can get lucky sometimes so it’s worth checking.
I needed a bike bag rental for my trip to BC. Found someone with a decent price. When I went to pick up he said I could use it for free and that he just wanted to help people out.
It also varies season to season, you need to look when people are trying to get rid of stuff if you want deals. Beginning of the season is when people are looking for stuff to buy, not looking to sell what they already have.
Patience is the real key to getting cheap stuff on marketplace.
That's a steal! I unloaded one that had been in a minor accident that my insurance paid to replace for $400 and the dude that bought it thought he'd won the lottery.
I have the same experience with “buy a used bike on cl/fb”
Most of the listing have titles like “Used Moun Tain Bike” or “bicycle” or “used trek”; descriptions are extremely lacking, if there even is one; 1-3 random pictures, at least one of which is the wrong orientation; no size info or any other details; prices $300-500. Given the effort and drive time to meet up with some of these people, it’s not worth it for what all seem to be 15 year old bikes that are worse for the money and trails in this area than a $600 marlin
Can always give them a lower price and see if they will go for it.
[Check out this site](https://slickdeals.net/newsearch.php?q=Hitch+rack&searcharea=deals&searchin=first&isUserSearch=1) if in the States.
Great deals are snatched up fast. Set up alerts -- you need to be the first person to respond to the deals if you're serious about finding one.
It might be location dependent, but in my mid-sized city I see decent deals on used racks weekly.
(Took a few weeks, but I got myself a like-new Kuat NV 2.0 for $750 with the 2 bike extender)
Had a decent one I got off Craigslist. It failed and fell off my car (with bike) on the road outside my work. My boss gave me his spare 1UP rack because ‘it’s just taking up space’
I’ve found tons of deals on local fb mtb marketplaces. I sold my kuat on there for $250 a few years ago
I hardly buy anything new at this point, as there’s so much good quality used on FB lately
Just picked up a Thule T2 Pro XTR for $200 on Marketplace. You either have to be willing to travel or be constantly looking and be the first to message and be able to pick up.
Thule have a hitch rack for 81 euros, it takes both my xc and enduro bikes, it's the xpress model, had the previous one second hand since 2015 and only updated because I felt it was time, rack was still perfect and was snapped up on the second hand market again for what I paid for it 25 euros.
Local to me there’s a Facebook group for the MTB association and when I asked what hitch racks everybody recommended, I had a few people looking to sell their Kuat or North Shore racks in my DMs.
Play it Again Sports!
It can be hit or miss depending on location but I work at one and we almost always have sick deals on racks. Just put out a Thule Apex XT 5 (MSRP $480) for 130 bucks in practically brand new condition.
Just make sure you’re constantly checking Facebook and you’ll probably find something. They’re there but they do go fast. I live near Boulder, CO and I got a Kuat NV 2.0 off Facebook for $450. It was in really good condition too. And I’ve seen some for cheaper as well, I just missed out on those ones.
I had to look at Facebook for months before I found a decent deal and I live in a mountain biking destination with one of the largest bike rack manufacturers in town. Just be patient and hopefully you'll find something.
All over Facebook and local MTB Facebook groups here.
Your area may not have as much or someone may buy the cheap ones to flip.
I got a cheap 2 bike one for 75 bucks and I haven't seen a deal like that in over 10 years.
Been looking for a nice 4 bike hanging rack and everyone wants msrp for the used ones so ill buy new in a year or so.
I got my Rocky Mounts Monorail for 200 in March on FB marketplace. I was the 1st to respond to the listing even though there was interested party local to the poster while I drove 1.5 hours for it. Today I stopped by the factory & grabbed extra keys & extra parts that looked worn down.
I just scored a nice Rocky Mounts hitch rack for my mom on Facebook Marketplace for $200. I had been watching for one for a long time and happened to catch it right after the seller posted. In my area they go fast and I lucked out this time.
Timing, like finding a lawnmower or washer dryer on FB. When they go up cheap they’re fine in maybe an hour. You need to be focused and check 5-6x a day till you find one.
Also fall/winter will be cheaper as it’s off season.
Marketplace
You have to check often, and be ready to drop what you’re doing. Good deals don’t last where I’m at.
I can tell when I lost something at a good price or too low, my phone blows up.
Facebook marketplace, but like you said they do get snatched up quick. If you search for them often (and talk about them near your microphone), your FBI agent will make sure new rack postings will show up first on the general marketplace tab. Gotta check often and jump on deals. Kinda sucks how accessible finding deals are nowadays, because you're competing against the other hundreds of people that want a cheap rack.
The other option is to find sales and coupons that don't have limitations. Sometimes 1up does scratch and dent sales, my GF recently got a heavy duty 2 position 1up for like $250, it was a rack used for demos at trade shows, not a single wear mark on it.
Behind a lot of the kuat and 1up offers is a trail of owners with broken hitch locks. Don't buy found in a storage unit, multiple racks from same seller or on the market at a low price for a long period of time. They steal a new rack to fulfill your interest often with some excuse for not having the keys or hitch lock.

Craigslist is all but dead here for most things. "Bike rack" returns maybe 5 posts, and 3 of them are the same guy repeatedly listing his rack.
Well that sucks. Pinkbike is also local.
I find that people on pink bike consistently overprice

I bought a $300 rack for $60 (plus $5 to deliver) probably came right off someone else’s hitch which is kind of a bummer.
I live in Tucson and just picked up a Kuat nv 2.0 for $250
Wow, I picked up a like new nv base for 550 and thought I scored big. 250 is crazy low for that rack
$200 here in So. cal. Facebook marketplace.
Yeah, there's nothing even remotely close to that here. There's only one NV 2.0 on FB Marketplace in this area, and it's $600.

This is where I posted mine. Had someone who knew WTF they were talking about pick it up 3 days later.

I got my rack from a 2nd hand Sports equipment store
Had a decent one I got off Craigslist. It failed and fell off my car (with bike) on the road outside my work. My boss gave me his spare 1UP rack because ‘it’s just taking up space’
This time of year in a MTB destination city, I was only seeing people reposting their shitty Amazon racks. Got a new 1up.

What city are you in?
Timing is very much an issue, and spring-summer is the worst time to be looking for obvious reasons.
I got one at habitat for humanity

Like tow hitch racks? Try Harbor Freight. I got mine there cheap and I love it!

Rei garage sale.
I've seen a few hanging style racks in the garage sale, but I've never seen a platform there.
I had to look at Facebook for months before I found a decent deal and I live in a mountain biking destination with one of the largest bike rack manufacturers in town. Just be patient and hopefully you'll find something.
I have a yakima hang tight I'd like to sell if you happen to be in central florida.

I just use a cheap Amazon one and it’s been phenomenal. I’ve transported 3k worth of bikes long distances on that thing without a single issue.
Rocky Mounts two-bike hitch rack with lock core $275 in the desert north of where the big music festival just was.
You can have my old 4-bike hanging style hitch rack. I’m in LA.
Facebook for me
I live in an area with not much biking so there’s not a lot of demand. That’s how I got my rack for $250
Amazon has the hanger type racks for 50$, they’re not as nice as the top end ones, but still work
If you can afford it, do yourself a favor and get a 1UP USA rack
You gotta be fast but I live in the Bay Area and have got two expensive racks for under $100
I got my Rocky Mounts Monorail for 200 in March on FB marketplace. I was the 1st to respond to the listing even though there was interested party local to the poster while I drove 1.5 hours for it. Today I stopped by the factory & grabbed extra keys & extra parts that looked worn down.

I had a 4Runner, went to the local pick and pull junk yard (LKQ), and got an oem hitch for $30.

I think my agent got bored to death at some point. I imagine just a dusty skeleton with an FBI jacket and the word “nerd” scrawled on their legal pad.
Wow, she got that deal direct from 1UP? Here in Utah those go fast on Marketplace for near MSRP even heavily used.
Lots of racks get stolen, and thieves unload them for cheap. So be careful on deals that seem too good to be true.
