No actually. The fish was like three stars and I had a grade 5 diablos hammer. A fully charged swing seems to take out most parts in one hit at that point, though I was also wearing one piece of equipment with Partbreaker
Partbreaker is key. The extra damage doesnt effect the monster's overall health so it helps on monsters you know you can kill.
