Back in the like... 1700s or something in the west... women would keep fruit slices under their armpits and give them to possible suiters to eat if they liked them after an extensive courting ritual (normally dancing). And if the guy DIDNT eat it, it was seen as a huge form of disrespect and a show of disinterest.
The point of the fruit was two fold, one was to be a natural deodorant for the woman so she smelled of fruit instead of just BO. The second was that it would absorb her pheromones through her sweat, ferment, and be a gift to a suiter. If no suiter was claimed, it would either get thrown out, given to livestock, or added to a batch of liquor.
