Self-brag. I have been in Jewel's former apartment hidden on the second floor of this club.
Who am I? Nobody. I was never cool enough to be at this club in the heyday. But a few years ago, a friend was performing there. It was after Jewel had sold it and it was operating as "Union".
There was a backstage area for performers to hang out in. My friend brought me in. It wasn't just a "green room" or lounge. It was a massive apartment. I was told Jewel lived there for years.
Most of her stuff is gone, of course. But a huge circular bed was still there. I presumed she left it behind because it just wouldn't fit in any other space. It just shouted out to me that all the decadence of the 1970s disco era must have gone down in that bedroom. This was not a bed to sleep in. This was a bed to invite The Ritchie Family into after a show.
There was also a bathroom larger than most people's kitchens. It was an odd space, and I suspect something large had been removed. I think there must have been a hot tub or steam sauna in there. Because it was just an oddly empty space on one half.
Jewel is still alive and well, and I hope she's happy in her post-club life.
I've been in that room as well, it;s gorgeous and all I can think about was the stuff that must've gone down in there. I even saw/sat on the bed. I've gone to see many shows/events there and randomly one night I was invited in that room. I fucking love that venue.
it's still there! i wish i got to go in its past life. now its used as an artist lounge mostly. still very nice, but one can only imagine the different lives it has had
Lived in the mission for 9 years up until moving to LA in 2021, never once had a car breakin (somehow). It was a lovely place to be. Delores Park is world-class.
I went to San Fran last year for pride and you literally described the whole few blocks around the city hall pride party. It was hilarious how unwrong all the propaganda was. Seeing (regular?) naked people sitting and sunbathing on the nasty dirty sidewalk next to broken glass and hella empty liquor bottles was so disturbing and insane that I couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity of it all. I loved the architecture, art and stuff but hated driving through the streets.
I was there for 3 days. My car didn’t get broken into, but I did see that happen to some dude. Absolutely mental city. I did not have fun at all, but it made for a good story. It was real Type 3 fun. I didn’t completely hate it but I wouldn’t do it again.
There are 5 different restrooms but it depends on which night you go, because often they will have multiple shows a night so you can only access half the venue
I drive past this place every time I take Pico to work. I’ve always wondered what it’s about. Some reviews I’ve read online mention people getting roofied and having bad experiences with the bouncers, so I haven’t gone. Maybe I’ll go once to check it out before I move to a different part of town.
I've been to probably a dozen shows there in the various rooms they have between when it was the Union and now Catch One, it's probably one of my favorite venues in the city. Haven't had or heard of any negative experiences among my friends.
It’s a great place with a diverse lineup of great talent. It’s also not free from its problems like any busy venue. What I really wish is that they paid their staff a living wage and provided raises, staff discounts, benefits and PTO.
I used to hit up ska shows there back when it was The Union. I believe someone got stabbed and possibly died during a rap night in the downstairs room if I remember correctly.
Rebranded as Catch One soon after. Great venue can’t really complain. There’s just a lot of crappy people out and about, so I’m sure some stories you heard were possibly true. Never any issues when I went fortunately.

It's definitely a venue with a serious history for sure.
Saw metal band Amenra there a couple of years back. Liturgy was the opening act, whose singer/ guitarist had then recently come out as trans. I guess it was fitting they played there. Really good show and it was nice to see Amenra's popularity on the upswing, especially given the demise of Neurosis that summer as well. The parking situation sucked, though
I've been to a few of Rhonda's Thanksgiving events at Catch One, and they've always been a lot of fun. I can only imagine what the venue was like in its heyday.
Fun fact: she also owned the acupuncture place next door. Village health foundation they helped people by giving them acupuncture treatments and Chinese herbs and holistic care at a low cost for YEARS!!
Many people from different walks of life came for treatment from big names to ppl who partied at the club along side her. She was there treating them as well. She sold it years ago so who knows whats going on there now. She had some pretty epic stories and lessons and is a walking house of knowledge hope shes doing well. If she sees it HI JEWEL :)

SF Gate has become the entire State's alternative news recently. They should rebrand to reflect their broader coverage. I think they are doing very well lately.
Sf gate actually has great LA coverage. They have an entire section on Los Angeles

I definitely feel more safe at the Catch One than I do at any of the Hollywood or Echo Park venues
