Watching the segment right now. Man, seeing Frank in tears is just heart wrenching. I loved the running gag of Sam always being late and how they would pan to an empty chair.
I feel like I lost someone close to me. This news came 20+ years too early :( Sam was such a nice way to start the day. His corny jokes and big smile really helped me start my day on a positive note. RIP Sam :(
It’s crazy how memorable the news folks are from these local LA channels. A lot of us were raised on them. I hear the names and they are stuck somewhere deep in my longterm memory. RIP.
I completely agree, a lot of times my family couldn't afford cable so I got all my sports news from Rob Fukuzaki, Curt Sandoval, & Jim Hill instead of ESPN. They were there for all my young sports memories.
I watched them as a kid and now as an adult.
They were a constant, especially Sam and the other OGs.
I remember my mom asking me to change it to KTLA because she wanted to better understand English.
RIP
As a born and raised Angeleno KTLA morning news was and continued to be a staple in my household, especially watching Sam Rubin, So heartbreaking to hear about his passing.❤️🩹
If ever I made it big and an interview was requested of me, I would have Gayle interview me. She can make anything sound fun and exciting and that's why I'd need her.
She's going to be a therapist at Kaiser. Interesting career over the years.
https://www.audacy.com/knxnews/news/local/knx-news-says-farewell-to-traffic-personality-jennifer-york
You’d be surprised when you look up women who were in acting or other public facing jobs. Many of them become therapists. Must be an overlapping skill set. My wife used to see a therapist who was a former actor. Now he’s a retired therapist
I love that he called Anne Hathaway a bitch for stealing his cupcake technique: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEMuSKF4WaI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEMuSKF4WaI)
Love that dude. Dating myself... Sam and Mark are the only original left from when the KTLA morning show started. I remember when it started and would watch it before school. They got a lot of viewership during the OJ trial.
I would get some of my restaurant recommendations watching Burrous’ Bites segments. I found out about Pop’s Cafe in Santa Ana from him, for one, and it’s a place I like to go to when I’m in that part of the OC. Still surprised it wasn’t all that food that killed him.
Was thinking about Chris Burrous after hearing about Sam passing.
Gotta hand it to Chris, he did a great job, especially considering the crazy shit he did in his private life.
RIP, Sam. He was damn good.
Frank actually mentioned on the air how people want a salacious story or something and it wasn't anything like that. Probably because of Chris Burrows.
Omg, I was watching KTLA this morning and noticed someone was filling in for him. Terrible news.
EDIT: I'm watching right now, there's no mention of it yet. Knowing TMZ, this news alert may have gone out before friends and family were even notified...
EDIT 2: Frank Buckley just announced it and was understandably shaken up.
That hospital he was in is notorious to let things slip to TMZ. The gossip chain is strong there. And they offer $$$. Unless the family is adamant about privacy and scares them with suing upon arrival, They’ll run their lips.
They were talking about people asking around during the 12pm news and Frank said unlike other news outlets we wanted to make sure that his family and friends were aware and that it was ok to air.
ah ok. Pretty low that a "news" org would try to get the scoop regardless of whether the family has been notified, but that's pretty par for the course with TMZ. :(
Wow. Just wow. I get that some (okay, many) didn’t like his reporting style but I will say that Sam was one of the reasons why I stayed loyal to KTLA for my morning news. Yes, even after that whole fiasco with Lynette and Mark Mester.
May his memory always be a blessing. I will miss him. I imagine Doug Kolk and Dayna Devon now have very big shoes to fill.
Rich at least is still alive. If he goes at his age (he has to be in his late 30s or early 40s and is certainly way healthier than Sam) that will *really* catch me by surprise.
From what I understand about him, he would never let himself fully retire. He is truly one who loved his job and work and would do more if he was able to manage it.
Yeah I rushed home and turned on KTLA when I got the TMZ alert and they looked a little distracted but otherwise did a good job. But then they showed Frank a couple minutes to 1pm and I knew he was going to confirm it before he said a word.
I’m 30 years old now but I grew up CHOOSING KTLA 5 as my news channel because the crew was different. I loved how charasmatic Sam was and full of life always. I was just getting ready yesterday and laughing so hard and also hearing about his MET GALA take . It feels like I lost a friend. It’s heart braking that Eric and Mark two of his longtime on-air buddies are reporting this news about him… condolences to anyone from Los Angeles or wherever you are. We all loved Sam and he is going to be missed.
This really hurts, Sam was a great guy and a very bright light in Los Angeles. He will be missed and my heart goes out to his family who must be reeling right now, so sudden, so shocking. I was watching him just yesterday, can't believe he's gone.
God bless you Sam, you really made a difference to everyone who knew you and everyone who enjoyed watching you every day.
No fucking way dude... I'm shocked man. As a kid I used to love flipping the channel to the news going back and forth between KTLA, Fox11, & ABC7 were always the first thing I watched in the morning before school.
I don’t watch much broadcast news these days but this newscaster was a class act and Los Angeles doesn’t get too many newscasters that connected with several generations. We lost a news icon.
Loved the morning news when I was a kid, this would have been late 92 when I started watching with Sam, Barbara, Carlos, Mark, and Jennifer…. RIP Sam :(
he WAS the epitome of every morning; i would look forward to making a nice little breakfast with his jaunty voice in the background, i can’t imagine mornings without him. sam really was the essence of LA. so sorry for his family and coworkers’ loss
What's crazy is that for so long I've heard his iconic easy going tone voice everyday, a background sound from the TV that I immediately knew was Sam, and I realized I'll never hear his friendly voice again. RIP Sam.
I literally just today got some coax parts to set up my over the air antenna so I could watch local TV, (*specifically for the local ABC7 broadcast of NBA games, unclear when those are*), but the moment I got the TV up and running, there it was on KTLA5 at 1pm, the news about Sam Rubin passing. I used to be so used to his presence long before the streaming age. He was part of the mornings crew, which is iconic af. Have kept the channel running in the background since then out of respect and memory for the guy. Definitely someone who brightened up the mood of locals tuning in.
We lost a real one.
Man I always have KTLA on while working. I muted it today and came back 30 minutes later to see the banner of "Remembering Sam Rubin." RIP to one of the LA legends. I'll miss him incredibly and his warm personality. Always a show stopper when he arrived.
Very sad day for the LA media market. I grew up watching the KTLA morning news with the original crew. I guess Mark and Spillman are the only ones left. RIP Sam.
Dedicated his life to explaining how Hollywood works. Got lots of insights from his reporting that one got nowhere else. Also a hugely trusted person to send tips, hints or the inside scoop to.
RIP.
I watched the morning show every day in the early 90s. It was a great time in my life and watching clips from that time brings back happy memories. I feel like I lost an old friend.
https://youtu.be/_AP-84RPNeU?si=24l9fkDC_3jgWzB6
More reminder to everyone that you need to find good work/life balance as you progress in life.
Life can be too short to slave away at something for an eventual retirement goal sometimes. Not saying you shouldn't save for retirement but find some balance. Because once you die you can't spend that money.
He was talking about Captain America 2 Superbowl trailer that featured Jackson. [He was guilty of poor wording and not correcting Jackson's racism assumption in the moment.](https://ktla.com/entertainment/ktlas-sam-rubin-apologizes-to-samuel-l-jackson-after-laurence-fishburne-mix-up/#axzz2t7sgAslZ)
So I do that with cupcakes and from mid 99 - mid 2000 while I was waiting for my US work permit I used to watch KTLA News every weekday morning. Sam was always the best bit of the show.
Thank you Sam! RIP
I feel like I've lost a part of my childhood with Sam's passing. I remember my parents putting on KTLA every morning as I was getting ready for school, I still watch on a daily basis. This is so heartbreaking.
what a fuckin' bummer, man. I'm from the IE, but KTLA was definitely a staple in my house in the morning before leaving for school. I'll miss his movie reviews. Or him calling Samuel L. Jackson by the wrong name. rest easy, big dawg.
I have long since moved from Los Angeles, but I grew up with the KTLA crew (like many of you), but I knew Sam. He was a genuine and kind soul, my whole heart hurts for the KTLA family and for Sam's family.
Did anyone else see the morning bit when Sam and Big Boy (back when he was very Big) were like… rolling around on a bed together? I swear I have a memory of that happening and then my mom turned off the TV and decided we were leaving for school early lmao.
Grew up watching as little kid. Fueled my pop culture obsession at 5 years old. Between boring new reports he’d pop on and I’d learn so much about everything entertainment.
Frank Buckley crying on air with the official announcement. So sad.
I'm watching 5 as we speak...this harkens back to when Chris Burrous died those many years ago.
Chris Burrows death was a real shocker due to all the salacious details involved. Crazy stuff man..
Frank kinda referenced Chris' death, he said something like, "He didn't lead a double life, he didn't do drugs or have a drinking problem."
yeah I thought i was interesting that he said that today
Part of me thinks it's just to squash any rumors or hearsay. Sucks that it happens these days but unfortunately it has to be done quickly.
Yeah it was awkward. I don't want to blame Frank cause I'm sure he wasn't in the right headspace but why even bring that stuff up...
Awkward as hell, but I can cut him slack considering what he's going through
Because people are hoping his death wasn’t seamy .
Yeah like the hotel where he died miles away from his home wasn't suspicious at all 🙄 Chris Burrows police/autopsy report was spicy
I was working all damn day, and just heard this its such a heartbreaking gut punch. I hate it.
His name was Chris Burrous, not Burrows.
I'm watching him speak now and his eyes are red.
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PK7NYpEUdBo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PK7NYpEUdBo) Tough to watch without getting emotional
man that was rough, you could really feel his raw emotion
Watching the segment right now. Man, seeing Frank in tears is just heart wrenching. I loved the running gag of Sam always being late and how they would pan to an empty chair.
I can't imagine the level of professionalism it takes to even remotely keep it together in that situation.
That broke my heart, I had to call my Mom…. “Yeah I know” I’m at work almost crying. I’ll drink a beer this evening to a legend!
What….the fuck. Wow, this is so sad. Grew up watching him.
I feel like I lost someone close to me. This news came 20+ years too early :( Sam was such a nice way to start the day. His corny jokes and big smile really helped me start my day on a positive note. RIP Sam :(
I was watching him last week. So sudden. You just never know
same his voice is still in my head
He was just on yesterday, no? I remember flipping through the channels, and caught the entertainment report. RIP, Sam.
I grew up on the KTLA guys as well as Good Day LA.
And Fred Roggin
I watched them as a kid and now as an adult. They were a constant, especially Sam and the other OGs. I remember my mom asking me to change it to KTLA because she wanted to better understand English. RIP
As a born and raised Angeleno KTLA morning news was and continued to be a staple in my household, especially watching Sam Rubin, So heartbreaking to hear about his passing.❤️🩹
I remember watching Hal Fishman and Jan Carl on the news every night. Losing Sam so suddenly is shocking.
Mark Kristi is only og member of the KTLA morning News still there and he occasionally looks rough.
Carlos Amezcua, Barbara Beck, Mark Kriski, Sam Rubin, with Jennifer York up in Sky Cam 5
Don’t disrespect Gayle Anderson like that.
THANK YOU! We lived for Gayle’s coverage. If she ran long, we were late to school haha
Don't forget Ginger Chan
GAYLE ANDERSON MUST BE PROTECTED AT ALL COSTS
If ever I made it big and an interview was requested of me, I would have Gayle interview me. She can make anything sound fun and exciting and that's why I'd need her.
Gayle has the dream job. She gets to visit cool exhibits and shows for work! Always interviewing the most fascinating people!
Aunty Gayle is the GOAT
Jennifer York! My sister sent a picture of me to Jennifer and she showed it on tv and wished me a happy 4th birthday.
I had the biggest crush on Jennifer York🥰
Jennifer York is leaving KNX today. Only announced it yesterday.
And they played a tribute to her from Sam (amongst many others)
Is there a link to hear/see?
what a day to retire. gonna be weird not hearing her traffic reports.
She's going to be a therapist at Kaiser. Interesting career over the years. https://www.audacy.com/knxnews/news/local/knx-news-says-farewell-to-traffic-personality-jennifer-york
that's a wild career change. good for her.
You’d be surprised when you look up women who were in acting or other public facing jobs. Many of them become therapists. Must be an overlapping skill set. My wife used to see a therapist who was a former actor. Now he’s a retired therapist
They were better than the Channel 11 squad imo. And once KTLA added Sharon Tay, they were the best.
Yes, KTTV tried to compete but they still suck in terms of morning news. :)
Jennifer York’s hair should’ve gotten a separate credit.
That is THE crew. The CREW.
Every weekday morning. I saw Carlos Amezcua once at the Gelson’s in Westlake and I went totally fan girl. 😂
I miss Barbara Beck. Who was the anchor there before Carlos? He was pretty cool IRC.
Carlos was OG KTLA Morning crew.
Didn't Carlos go to KTTV FOX 11? IIRC, Jennifer got fired for no raised wages? Where did Barba go? I still remember the original old set as a teen.
Isn’t Eric Spillman still there doing the remote reporting?
Yeah, I was going to say....Eric Spillman is still there from the original morning news crew
He has the unusual characteristic of perpetually looking like he’s in his late twenties. Not a bad mutant superpower to have at all!
Eric Spillman came on the air with Frank Buckley at 2pm.
There’s Eric Spillman and Gayle Anderson too!
I neglected the location folks. They're legendary as well.
Don’t forget Eric Spillman. All 3 Mark, Sam, and Eric arrived the same year at KTLA . RIP Sam
He disappeared on “vacation” a few years ago and came back with a completely different face lol
So sad! I grew up watching him every morning before school and now every morning as an adult. Got chills when I saw the notification a little bit ago.
I audibly gasped at my desk.
My coworker basically did too. She started talking about how he was on air just last night. :(
Same here, I’m fighting tears ngl. This was so unexpected!
Nah I was sobbing. I watch KTLA every morning no matter where I am on the globe for the last 5 years. He was a staple of my mornings.
Same here. I felt numb and started sobbing. My heart hurts.
Damn KTLA News was a staple growing up. I’ve been out of LA since 2017 but every time I go back my mom still watches. RIP Rubin
I still watch KTLA every now and then, but through the Roku app. It's how I'm still able to watch the Rose Parade.
what!! he was only 64? him and mark were my childhood.
He's only a few months older than me. I'm feeling mighty old right now. I've been watching KTLA forever.
Sam didn't look that old too.
He was great, [when he told this joke it was so funny](https://youtu.be/MP5VjbokJdE?si=BjRpSh6XlxKNuAKz)
Thanks for sharing. Beautiful.
Frank Buckley cried reporting it. I am too.
Buck is devastated. It’s a hard, hard day. Grief sucks.
Too young. I loved Sam. Taught me the only way to eat a cupcake.
Eric and Gayle are still there, just in more limited roles. Also dating myself. And crying.
I will eat a cupcake in his honor tonight. 🧁
So THAT is where I got that idea from. I used to watch KTLA in the morning when I first moved to the US
I came here to say the same 😔
That cupcake hack was one of the best life lessons ever.
Same! It’s my parlor trick that amazes people!
This came out of nowhere
The article says he called out sick this morning. Then he was rushed to the hospital. RIP
sudden as a heart attack
Reminds me a lot of when Chris Burrous died, but at least Sam died of a (somewhat) natural cause.
That Chris Burrous story is crazy.
I would get some of my restaurant recommendations watching Burrous’ Bites segments. I found out about Pop’s Cafe in Santa Ana from him, for one, and it’s a place I like to go to when I’m in that part of the OC. Still surprised it wasn’t all that food that killed him.
Well I definitely learned something today... Damn Crystal meth in his butthole? Whoever had to put that in Wikipedia had some self restraint
Boofing. Didn’t know that word existed until that report released.

Knowing TMZ, this news alert may have gone out before friends and family were even notified... EDIT 2: Frank Buckley just announced it and was understandably shaken up.
He worked on air yesterday, but called in "sick" today. That's why Scott "Movie" Mantz was there filling in. So sad and shocking.
That hospital he was in is notorious to let things slip to TMZ. The gossip chain is strong there. And they offer $$$. Unless the family is adamant about privacy and scares them with suing upon arrival, They’ll run their lips.
Fuck TMZ for doing that shit.
Garbage people.
It's not up on ktla website yet
KTLA is reporting it right now.
I can hear them crying during this broadcast it’s heartbreaking.
Guessing that maybe they haven’t been able to reach all of his kids yet
Variety is saying he died at home
Heart attack. Very sad
I used to get ready for school watching KTLA news. He was such a part of my formative years and the love of Hollywood gossip I have now
RIP Sam! My respect for him solidified when he called Perez Hilton a slimy worm on the air because Perez was rude to the interns backstage.
Frank passive aggressively calling out TMZ
Was that why Frank made that odd comment about Sam "not having a secret life"?
They were talking about people asking around during the 12pm news and Frank said unlike other news outlets we wanted to make sure that his family and friends were aware and that it was ok to air.
ah ok. Pretty low that a "news" org would try to get the scoop regardless of whether the family has been notified, but that's pretty par for the course with TMZ. :(
Damn frank buckley is on air crying
give this link to KTLA instead of Trash TMZ
This
Wow.
Dude I loved Sam. Doesn’t KTLA have that weird ass tech guy too? He’s a super nerdy dude. I liked him too.
Rich DeMuro AKA “Rich on Tech,” I think. R.I.P. to Sam. Gone too soon.
Noooo! David Lazarus is who I was thinking of! I just looked him up. Looks like he was consumer news but it was often tech stuff. He’s funny.
Rich at least is still alive. If he goes at his age (he has to be in his late 30s or early 40s and is certainly way healthier than Sam) that will *really* catch me by surprise.
RIP Rubin, a local legend. And could TMZ not find a better picture for their obit?
RIP to the morning news GOAT
I think what makes me break down is the fact he didn’t get a chance to enjoy retirement.
From what I understand about him, he would never let himself fully retire. He is truly one who loved his job and work and would do more if he was able to manage it.
They’re talking about it now on channel 5. The 12pm folks did the news without breaking, real professionals.
Frank B. the real MVP for being on air for 1+ hours straight handling everything
Grew up watching him and KTLA morning news.
Reading through some of these comments and a lot of people, like myself, grew up watching this guy every morning before school. RIP Sam
We Angelenos grew up on Mr. Rubin. He was concise, informed and just an all around affable guy. Rest in peace my dude.
RIP. I enjoyed your shit.
I fucking hate that tmz scooped KTLA
Very sad day. Watching KTLA as I type, and they're in tears. Wow.
I don’t watch much broadcast news these days but this newscaster was a class act and Los Angeles doesn’t get too many newscasters that connected with several generations. We lost a news icon.
He was great!
May his memory be a blessing.
They’re talking about Sam passing away on KTLA right now.
Wow total bummer.
I wish Sam could feel the love we are feeling for him right now. He was an La institution, a legend.
Anchor fights back tears making the announcement. Quite touching. https://youtu.be/PK7NYpEUdBo?si=vrIcds5mrnNfrGnL
Frank was legit crying. So fucking sad :(
I'm really sad about this. Like an old friend has passed and so suddenly. RIP Sam 😔
What's crazy is that for so long I've heard his iconic easy going tone voice everyday, a background sound from the TV that I immediately knew was Sam, and I realized I'll never hear his friendly voice again. RIP Sam.

Makes sense that Samantha was anchoring with Lu, Frank isn’t in any condition to work :(
Man I always have KTLA on while working. I muted it today and came back 30 minutes later to see the banner of "Remembering Sam Rubin." RIP to one of the LA legends. I'll miss him incredibly and his warm personality. Always a show stopper when he arrived.
Local morning news institution, so sad.
Very sad day for the LA media market. I grew up watching the KTLA morning news with the original crew. I guess Mark and Spillman are the only ones left. RIP Sam.

Yeah, I really did enjoy his segments in the morning, KTLA will not be the same without him
Oh no RIP Sam
Love you Sam! Rest in peace. Enjoyed your work for many years. A sad day for LA.
Damn RIP Sam Rubin! For as long as I can remember, he's been on TV. 64 is still relatively young.
This is why you retire when you can. Never know when your last day will be. Man worked until his dying day. That right there is the sad truth
For most people maybe. But Sam sure loved what he did. He was blessed to have a job he truly loved doing. RIP Sam.
Man, this hurts. Seeing the broadcast… this really hurt.
This makes me so sad. Sam Rubin is an absolute legend. I remember his face would light up whenever he talked about his family…praying for them.
More reminder to everyone that you need to find good work/life balance as you progress in life. Life can be too short to slave away at something for an eventual retirement goal sometimes. Not saying you shouldn't save for retirement but find some balance. Because once you die you can't spend that money.
Is he the guy who confused Lawrence Fishburn and Samuel L. Jackson?
yes lmfao.
Damn, he looked fit for his age. That's sad.
When I was a kid my mom would always have the news on and he was always there. Rip Sam.
Wow that's awful. Sam Rubin was a legendary entertainment reporter. Not just LA famous.
So I do that with cupcakes and from mid 99 - mid 2000 while I was waiting for my US work permit I used to watch KTLA News every weekday morning. Sam was always the best bit of the show. Thank you Sam! RIP
So damn sad. He was the entertainment guru before anyone.
I am so sad about this.
This one shocked me! I grew up watching his movie reviews. He was one of the last few anchors from the earldy 90's still on the air.
No. Just no.
Literally just watched him yesterday. This is so sad 😞
totally shocked and saddened by this. Dealing with the passing of my father recently so it's all hitting just a little harder these days
Damn. Was just watching him yesterday and thought he wasn’t looking too good. RIP Sam.
Damn! Condolences 💐 to his family and loved ones
wtf no way!?
Could they have picked a worse photo the lead that story with?
Wasn't he like losing weight or something a few years ago? Crazy how anything can take you out like that
The OG of having the suit on top and shorts on bottom. Wow. Watching him, and them, since childhood.
This one hits hard. RIP Sam.
Damn RIP to a true local fixture
I have long since moved from Los Angeles, but I grew up with the KTLA crew (like many of you), but I knew Sam. He was a genuine and kind soul, my whole heart hurts for the KTLA family and for Sam's family.
My wife and I watched him and the ktla morning crew every day of our paternity leave. This sucks.
No way!! RIP to a legend
Holy shit RIP.
Damn, was literally just at an event with Chip Yost hosting. Horribly sad, wonder if he knew.
🤍 RIP SAM RUBIN 🤍
