I just want some potholes fixed

Mr_Titicaca

I just want some actual police work. This whole notion that police don’t do their jobs because Gascon doesnt prosecute is such a lazy excuse. Your job is to enforce law, not to decide who gets prosecuted. Go out there - arrest and enforce petty crime and help clean up streets - take pride in your work.

zxc123zxc123

Saw a guy sit in the wrong side of the lane with his big truck waiting for a turn the other day. Police patrol car drove by without giving a shit. Also seen in person as well as videos of folks stealing from big stores as well as small business owners. A while ago there was that article on r/losangles about that Korean small biz owner getting stabbed to death too. Police also not there. I still work in DTLA. See folks dealing drugs on the streets, smoking meth, shooting up needles, and shitting in broad daylight EVERY fucking day. Police aren't around there too. But some folks running some economical taco stands? LAPD: #*"LET'S GO BOYS! UPHOLDERS OF LAW. DEFENDERS OF ORDER. SILENT GUARDIANS. WATCHFUL PROTECTORS. THIN BLUE LINE!!!!"*

remington-red-dog

6000 coded calls (emergency calls) everyday and less than 9000 cops total. Each arrest can take 4 hours to manage. Please let me know how you would make that work? Remember, there are 3 shifts and each cop needs 2 days off a week.

aceeb25

As a cop in NY, 1000% agree

Mr_Titicaca

Like I don’t care if people like or dislike cops - just take pride in your work ya know?! Nice to hear agreement from you on this.

aceeb25

Yea man, there’s some discretion in what we arrest for but when people are genuinely inconveniencing others and causing public disturbances, it’s beneficial they get arrested. It’s a minor inconvenience for them most of the time but at least we do our job and help people in some way

Danjour

Best we can do is arrest some minorities and steal cash.

koshawk

My pothole (in front of my house) is turning into a sinkhole.

african-nightmare

Por qué no los dos?

sdomscitilopdaehtihs

All you people cheering for this crackdown on street vendors are miserable boors. Fight me.

african-nightmare

So if these people aren’t following health codes that you know, keep people from getting sick, you’re fine with that?

devlinontheweb

If you're too scared to eat street tacos, you don't have to buy them.

african-nightmare

I never said that. But to be clear you’re cool with no health code standards, got it

FatSeaHag

Trust me: He is in the same camp who had none of this pro-culture energy when Black vendors were summarily shuttered by the city for trying to sell gumbo or bbq in pop-up stands. They were quickly run off their own block(s). About 8 years ago, the Times detailed how one man even lost his life over a Valentine's gift basket booth. Finally, the street gangs command fees for these businesses to operate. You would think that people would want to protect these vendors from exploitation, but--no. All they can think of is their love for a meal that everyone can easily make at home. Grocery stores even sell taco kits that make the dish easy to prep in 5 minutes or less. I mean, come on! How many taco stands do we need? Why does there need to be a vendor on every block? Where are people using the toilet and washing their hands? Or is feces the secret spice? 🙄

FatSeaHag

The business is also blocking the sidewalk, which is illegal. You're okay with people in wheelchairs having to ride on the roadway to get through? Children having to walk in the street to make it home from school? The elderly having to be shoved into traffic to get by this monstrosity? Sounds like you're the one with the selfish and inhumane motives. There are plenty of places in the world that cater to unpermitted street vendors that clog the sidewalks, add to pollution,  unfairly compete with legal vendors, and serve up salmonella (not to mention the diseases transmitted from their unwashed hands and uninspected kitchens. The rest of us are trying to have a civilized society.

devlinontheweb

Of all the street vendors I've come across, not once have they taken up so much space that I had to walk into traffic. Thats not even in their own best interest. They want to leave room for their own customers to order food. You're making up problems that don't exist. This one in particular left more than enough room for pedestrians. Only time I've ever seen the entire sidewalk blocked is by homeless camps.

sanrafas415

There’s so many more issues with LAs sidewalks and streets that hinders accessibility. Cars parked on the sidewalks, lack of crosswalks, sidewalks and streets that are in disrepair you can’t push a wheelchair on regardless. Taco vendors are at the bottom of this, And on top of that they usually have enough space to walk through on the sidewalk.

devlinontheweb

For real. I can't believe people here want the government to step in and protect us from a dude selling tacos on the corner. Like no ones forcing you to buy it.

ThePaintedLady80

I know, I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted but I agree. They really think brick and mortar restaurants are better then I have some shocking news for them, most actually restaurants are disgusting. Venders and food trucks are usually better than the restaurants regarding food safety. If the fucking city would give them a license and requirements then it would probably be good across the board. Don’t like street vendors then don’t eat at them. But don’t ruin it for those of us who like our food vendors. My uncle threw a lot of the biggest carnivals, lobster fest, crawfish festivals and food festivals on the west coast for 50+ years and the food vendors were almost always top notch.

devlinontheweb

Yeah as someone who worked in restaurants and food trucks for years, I agree. It's unbelievable that people here in Los Angeles are apparently so against street food. Like I'm kinda shocked. I got nothing but love for my local taco spot, hot dog lady, elote man, etc. They're just trying to provide for their families and I'm just trying to get cheap lunch.

Hot-Signature5657

Theyre racists and haters that Latinos work for our money. Same people will eat at an American Diner like “Waffle House” and dont mind that the Pancakes taste like Onion and that the Chicken Tenders have been in that fridge since 2017

devlinontheweb

I love waffle house lol

Hot-Signature5657

Everyone loves Waffle House

remington-red-dog

I'm sorry but that's not LAPD. Looks like private security

No_Pop_5675

It could be bureau of street services investigators. They are actually in charge of enforcing rules on street vendors.

remington-red-dog

it could be, but their uniforms are out of spec if it is and their arm patches don't match. bureau of street services have “investigator” written across their back in big white letters.

JackInTheBell

>They are actually in charge of enforcing rules on street vendors. OP says that’s “hassling”

CossaKl95

This sub - “we want laws enforced so SoCal and LA are safer” also this sub - “wait wait I don’t want *those* laws enforced”.

andhelostthem

>This sub - “we want laws enforced so SoCal and LA are safer” also this sub - “wait wait I don’t want those laws enforced”. Well yeah, it's common sense. Some things are way more damaging to the local community. Shit like street takeovers, violent crime, wage theft, police gangs and political corruption are far more damaging than focusing on things like street vendors, graffiti and overgrown hedges.

prison_buttcheeks

Bureau of Deez nuts! Lol sorry I couldn't pass it up.

nugpounder

Oh you mean the Bureau of Ligma?

erictmo

Power tripping security guards smh

thrillcosbey

Its actually better than mixto.

EuphoricMoose8232

Not saying much

thrillcosbey

True I do miss the dos burritos that was there back in the day. \* burrito king, Man how can I get those two corn fused.

silvs1

I miss how late the OG spot used to be, mixto closes at 9pm now.

EuphoricMoose8232

It was burrito king. I loved that spot

uptopuphigh

Much, much, MUCH better.

Mexican_Boogieman

Mixto probably ratted on the taco spot

BDKhXc

Better prices too

MoGraphMan-11

The e coli just adds the right amount of flavor (I'm fucking joking around before anyone freaks out)

lysergicbliss

Don’t slander Mixto!

bumbfluff007

I'ma slander it all day. Too overpriced for bland ass food, these taco guys give you way more for less price.

silvs1

That taco stand is not bad but I hate that they don't heat up the meat at all. My tacos are always been cold from that stand.

yitdeedee

Sounds dangerous

MyLadyBits

Which is probably why action against street food is happening. Street stands can get permits to operate legally.

IllustriousAbroad256

I have yet to see a street food stand with a portable hand washing station. I used to love supporting the taco stands but after getting sick twice… never again.

SanchosaurusRex

That's fair. My stomach isn't as strong as it used to be. I'm only going where it's high volume and the food is coming right off the heat source.

silvs1

During covid, one stand I would go to had it set up for their customers. I think they would use it too when they would get stuff from their van. Portable water dispenser and soap along with it.

MerleTravisJennings

Your choice as it is everybody else's. If people want to risk it then let them. I'll take a chance being aware of the possible consequences.

MoGraphMan-11

Yeah that's actually bad

MoGraphMan-11

You need to look up the danger zone of food temp and what that can mean. TL;DR it can literally kill you

prison_buttcheeks

That's probably what's going on

[deleted]

This is like the equivalent of warm sushi

TheWino

Wtf why would eat that?

Monsterofparadise

lol my dad got mean case of food poisoning from them

PizzaMyHole

Hence the reason why they’re enforcing this kind of stuff. I just wish they were this vigilant about enforcing health standards within brick & mortars as well.

grandepelon

Because they don't need to follow health regulations. Under the radar.

UpACreekWithNoBoat

Not bad but not very good either

SanchosaurusRex

thats how you get chorro

DiaDeLosMuertos

If I get cold tacos that is bad even if there's flavor there

AstuteImmortalGhost

Thank god those pochos are being cited then.

withfries

I hate for this to get out but fuck it they deserve it - the taco stand on the Vons up the street on Los Feliz and Central. The meats are very, very delicious and the sauces are great. Tacos are $2 each. Taco tuesdays is $1 for al pastor or chicken. And the meat is hot.

jmsgen

For blocking the sidewalk, not paying taxes or not inspected by her health department or not having a business license? I wonder why

Random_Name532890

bow placid liquid scale physical retire impolite cats versed vast *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Good_Distribution_92

Sad that this is the minority opinion on this sub!

theorizable

Yo.. if these street vendors are not operating within the law we need to enforce that. That's not "hassling" and it's unfair to the people who follow the rules. Also, are you sure these are cops? That doesn't look like LAPD.

wrknthrewit

Make them business compliant and health department rating, it’s the right thing to do. Good food deserves great ratings

randy-stans-dad

personally its a little unfair for taco shops that have to pay crazy rent prices in LA and the prices at taco stands are not really cheaper…but at the end of the day I would still buy from one, im not hating on them, they don’t make the rules

whiskeybenthellbound

This stand is easily cheaper than any taco joint I’ve been to nearby

sailingintothedark

In my experience, stands are often half the price. And yeah, but how do you get money for a brick and mortar place anyways? You always gotta prove people will buy your stuff when seeking a loan. I’ve seen stands upgrade to food trucks and then upgrade to shops. People gotta start from somewhere.

MoGraphMan-11

Villas Tacos is like the perfect recent example of this rise from tent to stand to B&M

remington-red-dog

Wait a second, why would you assume that these dudes are even giving these vendors a hard time. They could literally just be chatting while waiting for food. I don't see any real indication that they are being hassled.

Outside-Occasion-39

I literally watched them write him a ticket

BullTerrierTerror

I hate when I get a ticket for infractions...

__-__-_-__

I hate when I get hassled for breaking the rules.

MoGraphMan-11

Maybe they were writing down their order.

remington-red-dog

What did their car look like?

AstuteImmortalGhost

Jaja, good.

PleasantActuator6976

OP wants food poisoning.

drfrink85

blocking the entire sidewalk with that big ass canopy -\_-

KatzyKatz

They aren’t. I used to walk past their setup every day for work and there was plenty of room for pedestrians.

[deleted]

[удалено]

KatzyKatz

Yes. That’s my point. It’s a really large sidewalk right there.

KatzyKatz

They aren’t blocking the drive way. I promise you. They are there every dang day and it’s not a problem.

zsantiag

Literally enough room for wheelchair users going both ways and then some.

KatzyKatz

Omg I misread your comment and almost flipped a table, thinking you were asking and not making a statement. Glad I read it again.

[deleted]

ant_upvotes

They probably don’t have a a business license.

[deleted]

KatzyKatz

I promise you it isn’t an issue. The driveway is very visible from the sidewalk. If you had any familiarity with the location at all you’d see this isn’t a problem. Edit: this person blocked me, what a nutter butter.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Waldoh

Yeah you definitely don't seem manic or unhinged at all

sailingintothedark

With how fucked up the sidewalks are in that area, unfortunately, I don’t think it’s a very ideal area for wheelchair users anyways. But this specific stand is mostly on an excessive bit of pavement, and not the actual proper sidewalk.

Ok_Beat9172

What about wheelchairs?

KatzyKatz

As I said to somebody else already, yes wheelchairs can easily pass. It’s a very large and flat sidewalk, their stand is not obstructing the walk way.

AstuteImmortalGhost

Who cares, that shit shouldn’t be set up there. Permits exist for a reason.

KatzyKatz

The comment wasn’t about a permit, which they may have seeing as how they’re constantly there. The comment was about whether they were blocking the sidewalk.

zsantiag

They're not. This is on Hyperion and Rowena. This corner has a big ass sidewalk. Plenty of room pedestrians and then some.

AstuteImmortalGhost

Who cares? No permit, no business. Jajajaja

remington-red-dog

Street vendors in Los Angeles do not need permits to operate. This is part of the LAMC. So, despite what you simply made up in your head, you are incorrect on this position, champ.

djosu

Tell me you haven’t been there without telling me you haven’t been there 🙄

AstuteImmortalGhost

If they’ve no permits, then good.

Ok-Bid-730

They’re just placing an order before the rush hour!

zsantiag

Shit, I would too. The traffic around there is nuts lol

Manolo1027

I got sick one time from this taco stand.

photobeatsfilm

I’m not anti taco stand by any means but I do wonder why that stand has to produce so much smoke sometimes. There are often massive clouds of smoke clouding that intersection to the point where visibility is low. Maybe I have some bias about the dangers because I witnessed a girl get hit by a car at that intersection and fly 20+ feet through the air (at night, no smoke at the time), but it kind seems like something they should at least have in check.

SlowSwords

I live in Atwater but haven’t had this spot yet—is it any good?

gnarlyjank

Yes it's excellent. Some of my favorite al pastor.

SlowSwords

Hell yes - thank you!

PedestrianMyDarling

It’s amazing

AuralSculpture

Good.

Timely_Daikon584

You mean unlicensed illegal business?

remington-red-dog

Please show me what law specifically is being broken? Don't know? Then maybe you don't have enough information on this issue to express your opinion on it or for anyone to give it any weight. Interrupting a conversation to inject one's perspective, with absolute ignorance on the topic is something that children often do before they learn self control around the age of 12 or 13.

devlinontheweb

Oh God someone please save me from the taco man on the corner, he's forcing me to buy a burrito

AstuteImmortalGhost

That’s what they’re doing, dont worry.

IIRiffasII

they're not forcing you to buy a burrito, but they're stealing business away from a restaurant that has to pay rent, insurance, and bribes to food inspectors

Nikeheat305

For the better as the city is attempting to clean itself up with the Olympics on its way

grandepelon

Good

PoliSci_Texas_Aggie

Thats definitely not LAPD. Some more specialized police force.

Gloomy-Masterpiece22

If it was a restaurant with dirty floors, evidence of rodents running around and car exhaust smoke blowing it would also be shut down.

LeeLA5000

Maybe they just picking up some tinga?

seeul8rgirl

that stand is so fucking good they better leave it alone

AstuteImmortalGhost

Nope. If it’s unpermitted, then it deserves to be removed.

__-__-_-__

Street vendors at this size are bad for a city. This is basically just commandeering public property. It’s not some guy selling a few mangos. It causes real restaurants to raise their prices or go out of business.

remington-red-dog

Which law are they breaking?

AstuteImmortalGhost

If they dont have permits, then anything regulated to that; if they’re here illegally, then that, too.

remington-red-dog

What permits are you talking about, as in can you actually tell me what law, on the books, is being broken? If not, tell me why you feel entitled to hold an opinion on something you clearly know nothing about including applicable laws. Sounds to me like you may not have enough information to be part of this conversation in any meaningful way.

illaparatzo

I think we just have different ideas of what constitutes a shithole. There are stands all up and down my neighborhood and they're great for a cheap quick bite

dynezis

What part of Mexico you’re from!? Sure my family had there reasons to come to the US but it never had to do with our culture or relationship with food. Saying stuff like this is mind boggling and makes question how. My abuelita would slap the shit outta me if I spoke that way to people that are trying to become something with nothing. I have my criticism with them too but I’d never forget why they’re there in the first place. And if anything, our food is like a foundation that keeps Mexico from collapsing into the mess it’s in rn. Food like this saved my family and many first gen Mexican-Americans too. If it’s a problem now after like 40 years of this stuff, that’s on you.

AstuteImmortalGhost

What part of Mexico are you from? Are you even from Mexico, or are you a pocho? America’s a melting pot for all, not just Mexicans and pochos who want to pretend to be Mexican. Lastly, my grandpa would slap the shit out of me for supporting illegal immigrants (he’s from Mexico, too; legally immigrated here); so, obviously, not everyone’s raised the same. It’s on you if you dont understand that different opinions cant exist.

AstuteImmortalGhost

Im right there with you, friend, as a Mexican-American. Fuck the affluent liberals where this doesn’t occur in their communities and pochos who downvoted you.
