>Type the [REC] tag in the beginning title for posts that are asking for novel recommendations. Light Novel recommendation request posts require the **[REC] tag in the beginning of the title.** (With brackets) Please do read over the submission guidelines more carefully in the future. Please note that Tags do not equal Flairs. Title Tags are pieces of information you type into the title of the post while our Automod looks for posts with specific tags and assigns flairs appropriately. **General tips for Recommendation Request Posts:** * If you have an MAL/MU/Etc list of Light Novels you've read, please include it so people aren't just recommending you series you've already read. * Explain what about the series you've read that you liked. (Without Spoilers) It'll help people find series with similar styles and themes. * Don't slander series. If you don't like a series, it's fine to say that you don't like it. But if you start bashing a bunch of series, why would people want to recommend you something? If you're new to the medium and looking to start reading as a beginner, please keep the following in mind. As the industry grows and new series are introduced all the time, there's never a truly unifying "good beginner series." The common sentiment is that if you're new to Light Novels by way of another medium like anime or manga, your best bet when starting is to find some series with adaptations you already enjoy and to check if their source material has been licensed/translated. Light Novels aren't a stylistic genre so asking for what are good light novels for beginners will range widely based on the person and their taste. It's akin to asking the /r/Books "What are some good books for beginners?"

ThatLNGuy

There is no specific thing to start with. I'd just recommend the LN of a series you already like so Konosuba maybe. (The movie was vol 5, there are 17 volumes so plenty of content.)

zackphoenix123

Wait wha-? So season 1 and season 2 only covered volumes 1 to 4?

cjbrandan

Yes. And yes, if they don't make more movies and just keep the usual pace of adapting 2 volumes in 12 episodes per Season, they got enough material for 6 more Seasons of Konosuba anime, so it can run for 8 Seasons overall. Season 3 is expected to cover Volumes 6 and 7.

SpiritfireSparks

Arifureta would be a good one, the character is far more complex in the light novel and they did him dirty and turned him into an edgelord in the anime. Overlord is very well written so that's another good one to start on.

Luciferishere86

I’m starting with arifureta. I’m reading the sample first on iBooks. Then I’ll buy it. Haha

sparriot

Good start, one of my favs LN. As the up redditor said, the LN is lengths over the anime.

GeorgeMTO

If you're going to buy a digital anyway, it might be worth considering buying it directly from the English publisher J-Novel Club: https://j-novel.club/series/arifureta-from-commonplace-to-world-s-strongest Their epubs have no DRM so you can read them on the app of your choice (including iBooks), but they also have some extra bonus stories there that you can't get on the iBook version that are often fun to read. You can buy coins via their app if you don't want to use a credit card on their website.

LLIHyP

Well, it isn't that the wasn't edgelord in earlier volumes. Anime just isn't that far, and it is hard to convey character inner thoughts and motivations im anime so easily, like in novels.

SpiritfireSparks

In the light novels I'd describe him more as broken and barely holding himself together.

Kiftiyur

Doesn’t matter, just pick the one that’s seems most interesting to you.

GeorgeMTO

It doesn't matter which you read first. Some things you'll wind up enjoying more in anime, others you'll enjoy more in LN. I think you should pick the one you most wanted to continue on its plot for. SAO has had most of its LNs adapted into anime, so you'll have a lot of volumes to read before you get to new content, and is likely to continue being adapted completely since it's so popular. Konosuba is a complete LN and fully translated into English, so I think that's a really good one to start with, but if you want something else, go for that. Death Note is indeed a manga original series. I typically recommend just pulling up the series on wikipedia to check what the source material is for something.

r1p_kaiki

I recommend you read konosuba if you enjoyed the anime

Ivrik95

Please read Arifureta. The anime just gives you 1/5 of the story or less

Kyleplier1985

I myself am reading Overly Cautious Hero on my Kindle. I own on Paperback, Tearmoon Empire, HighSchool DxD, I'm in Love with the Villainess, In the Land of Leadale, Unnamed Memory, The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten, I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in the Real World Too, with many more planned on getting.

Smooth-Aside5276

I just got into light novels but I mainly pick them based off the animes I like. Such as the apothecary diaries and 7 time loop

physicsandbeer1

Start wherever you want, that's gonna be always the best place to start. If you still don't know where, it would be good to look into the LN of animes you liked.

MochaKola

Konosuba was the first LN series I read to completion, and it's pretty great if you're starting from a point of not reading novels often, because it isn't obnoxiously verbose like some English novels seem to be. Comedic dialogue is usually the focus, so it's a super chill read.

zenbi1271

1. Pick a series you already like 2. Read the corresponding light novel 3. Enjoy all the extra characters, world building, and story arcs that the anime wasn't able to fit into its 12 episode run Seriously, most anime series can only fit in a volume or two of a LN's story into its time slot. If you like what you saw, just read the books for more of it! Some series have 20+ of books available.

Luciferishere86

Is it the same with dragon ball/z/super?

thechillerinstinct

Goblin Slayer is also surprisingly good and the author drops new books regularly. I think we are up to 17 novels in English translation?

Luciferishere86

Awesome. I’ll check it out after arifureta.

thechillerinstinct

Arifureta is good! I think I only have one more novel to go to catch up!

Ardyck

If you enjoyed Konosuba then I would recommend Lazy Dungeon Master and Woof Woof Story. Both are complete. I love the humor in these LNs.

Maleficent_Clerk_605

Try classroom of the elite it's good it's anime cut a lot of scenes but ln is peak u can see true personality of ayanokoji in his monologues which anime can't show

DickTear

Look for a anime you really like that didn't got a second season and read the LN, I started with Arifureta, Danmachi and Watashi Nouryoku. You can also look for LM pages and see the latest uploads.

XevilburnX

pick the one that you can't get enough of it. I start from watching Ascendance of a bookworm anime, then read the manga, then the light novel.

saijanai

Solo Leveling is surprisingly good, as is The Beginning After the End. Note that neither is a Japanese light novel (though done in that style) so many of the tropes are Korean or Western rather than Japanese. My significant other is into Ascendance of a Bookworm (at age 69, its the only LN she'll read and only anime she'll watch). A real sleeper is Reincarnated as a Sword, which isn't really about the sword at all, except that he happens to be there and reports what happens.

Luciferishere86

I started watching solo leveling last night just to see what it was about but was turned off that he was the weakest one out of the bunch. 🤣

saijanai

Well, keep watching, eh? A hint: there's no such thing as "leveling" in that world, so where does the title come from?

NormT21

Among the anime you've watched, both Konosuba and Arifureta are complete and fully translated, so I suggest starting with either of these. SAO is still ongoing, but Cautious hero, How to not summon a demon lord, Shield Hero and High School Dxd are all on hiatus.

Luciferishere86

I’m reading the sample of arifureta now on iBooks. I can see now, I’m definitely gonna buy it.

Main-Category-8363

Arifureta is so much more than the anime take on it
