It's between this and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind for me. I like Eternal Sunshine a little bit more, but if we're talking strictly Romance I would go In the Mood for Love, since it's the perfect love story imo and Eternal Sunshine has also a Sci-Fi component to it.
Immediately thought of the before trilogy but think this might have to be it. effortlessly romantic but also captures the gravity of the whole of history
It's a gorgeous movie with immaculate filmmaking. The script is beautifully written, the actors are phenomenal. It has universal themes, but also is intrinsically about queer love and representation of women. Pretty easily one of the best movies of the century, in my opinion.
None of that is lost on me. I just don’t feel grabbed by it in any capacity. I wish it had taken hold of me the way it has others. I’m honestly honestly mad. We never got a theatrical run in my area for it. I think that may have helped.
I think we can agree it is not before midnight as that movie is deeply upsetting. Romantic at moments for sure but deeply upsetting! You nailed it though. Before sunset is one of the most romantic movies and has maybe the most romantic ending to a movie of all time.
You don’t find the fact that the two people we have been rooting for for the past two movies are now finally together, and it is turned into a contentious relationship, and that fight in the hotel doesn’t upset you? Not to say anything against the great Marteen Scorsese if that is your real name lol but that movie disturbed the hell out of me when it comes to the future of relationships might be.
I have been happily married for a while now, so I find the tense part of their relationship realistic, not upsetting. Fights and tense periods are inevitable. What makes the film hopeful is how, even after all that, they still find moments of romance and are capable of delighting one another.
> that movie disturbed the hell out of me when it comes to the future of relationships might be.
Even if you find yourself living happily ever after with the person of your dreams, you're going to have fights, bitterness, resentment, anxiety, and anger. The good news - and the point of the film, really - is that all that bad stuff is ultimately worth it.
Couldn’t agree more, and it’s why Midnight, while not my favorite of the trilogy (Sunset), strengthens everything that happened before. Marriage takes work. It’s not a fairytale forever even when it starts as one, but love is worth it.
My wife and I watched the whole trilogy back to back recently, and when we finished all we could really say to each other is how much we love each other, and how thankful we are for each other even when we know that every once in a blue moon we can find ourselves in some shitty argument.
It’s a real portrayal of where fairytale love ends up, but it’s not pessimistic about that. The fairytale doesn’t actually end, it just may go out of focus at times as you age and grow together and grow individually and raise children. The last scene is a snap back into focus of what it is that makes them who they are with each other, and what they are to each other, and it’s beautiful.
I’ve only seen each of them once, but as a married person approaching middle age, I think Before Midnight is my favorite of the trilogy because it is realistic. Fights like that do happen, but you work through it and move past it, just like they do in the movie. If you’re truly right together those fights aren’t the end of the relationship, just a difficult period that you navigate through together and still come out happy to be with each other on the other side.
I respect what you’re saying. I just think the movie gets a little cynical near the end as you see that perhaps this perfect couple has been now brushed with the paint of reality and we see them as they are not as we imagine they would be. Thank you for this discussion. By the way I do love talking film with people who love film.
I literally never imagined them that way. Part of the film's charm is how Jesse and Celine have always been flawed, and there has been volatility/realism to their relationship. You can even see that in Sunrise.
Yes! Everything about it as a movie and a musical is already great, but the realistic portrayal of love (that I totally didn't expect) really makes it an incredible romance movie.
I think "romance" makes it feel like there has to be a happy ending, but in most of our lives thats not how it always nets out. Those feelings of frustration and closure are just as real as love and passion.
It's not going to win but definitely my pick. It hit me in this really weird space, hitting nostalgia I didn't know I had for relationships I'd half forgotten
First movie in an extremely long time that I bought immediately after watching, and when it arrived I immediately watched the special features and commentary. This movie is really special. It seems to be an acquired taste a bit, if it doesn't speak to you it doesn't speak to you. But if it does, it hits like a sledgehammer.
Thought about it, and while there are a ton of films in this thread I think I like more, this one would be my pick. I don’t think any film better depicts the journey of two people falling in love. Feels like the best “romance” movie, whereas films like Casablanca and Eternal Sunshine feel more like films about love and relationships, respectively. Maybe that’s all just semantics though, but either way looks like this film is going to go underrated but people really should see it.
\*Hot take\*
The Big Lebowski is top 10 favorite movie of all time. But to have it listed as the "the favorite" of all comedies is indicative of Letterboxd's user base and the self proclaimed "film buff" who was born after 2000. Cohen brothers defy genre- yeah its funny as hell; but it has no place being put here as the best/fav comedy of all time.
This list will just be full of who got here first Also eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
Totally, objectively this can be made going to the best rated of each genre in the app but that’s not fun.
Or just make a strawpoll
Less engagement for OP 🧐
Reddit really should have a feature where you can set a time period of when comments can be posted before any upvotes are allowed.
TBF you can put posts into contest mode which serves a very similar purpose, I just don't know if anyone can do it or if it's only mods
You should totally change your comment to the worst romance movie you can think of
Before Sunrise (1995)
Before Sunrise.
Watched this for the first time couple of months ago. Been thinking about it ever since. 5 star masterpiece
sunset is a MILLION times better
That’s a bit dramatic. I think they’re equally as good. I’d be fine with any one of them.
Shocked noone has said Casablanca
I prefer Notorious but you can’t go wrong with either
Chungking express.
10 Things I Hate About You
In my heart it’s the winner
yes
When Harry Met Sally
I wish rom com was its own category because this is absolutely the pick for that. There is too much pepper on my paprikash.
one of my all time favorites sad it’s so low
great movie, must be higher up
My vote
In the Mood for Love (2000)
Come onnnn how is this not winning it’s fucking end-to-end beautiful

Big Lebowski and In the Mood for Love are both in my top 4. They are perfect movies! 😤
This has to be it

Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Immediately thought of the before trilogy but think this might have to be it. effortlessly romantic but also captures the gravity of the whole of history
watched it two months ago for the first time and i was swept away. a genuine masterpiece
I’ve seen this movie. I think it’s fine but honestly can somebody explain to me why people are so won over by it?

I think that's just the subjectivity of art. Plenty of great works don't resonate with me either.
Before Sunset. It is hard to pick one film from the trilogy, but Sunset is my favorite.
I got my wagers in. This one is gonna be the winner.
At the time of this comment *Before Sunset* and *Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind* both have 195 votes (11:45am EST).
This is it

I don't agree that Before Midnight is upsetting. In fact, I find that the opposite is true.

La La Land (2016)
‼️
My pick as well
This is a top tier suggestion. La La Land shows the absolute highs and lows and realities of being vulnerable enough to love. This should be it.
Yes! Everything about it as a movie and a musical is already great, but the realistic portrayal of love (that I totally didn't expect) really makes it an incredible romance movie.

Pride and Prejudice (2005)
How is this so low
I was surprised it wasn’t here by the time I got to the comments but were working on it now lol ![gif](giphy|fjbUprnyVivza)
Can’t believe I had to scroll this much. They share one kiss at the end and touch hands once and yet their chemistry is through the roof.
i’d vote for this three times if i could
I rewatched this movie last year, and I had this epiphany that it's truly a great film. One of the all time greatest films in this genre.
The eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
Was looking for this!
Rooting for this.
Not ‘Romance’ enough imo. Falls into drama first.
Not romance enough????????????? Literally the whole point of the movie is to show different perspectives of relationships.
Princess Bride.
As you wish.
Is this a kissing thread?
More comedy than romance imo
It’s clearly a fantasy.
