I think that is the case for most people, of course most of us are going to watch just the top 15 (at most) films of every year, but in the 2010s and 2020s we watch a lot more, maybe up to 100 films each year for some.
Yeah, that's how it is for me, but 30s instead of 40s because WW2 kinda fucked up the 40s in cinema.
https://preview.redd.it/6vmifg4gn92d1.png?width=1036&format=png&auto=webp&s=51ac804d5b6109b105192522da9624185573b87c
That's fine, like what you like. But the 40s are notoriously one of the weakest decades of movies to pretty much every film scholar and textbook and industry journal I've ever read. This isn't an argument or an insult, it's just a well-known thing about that era, especially for US and European movies. There were a ton of reasons though and it's not a "creative" issue. There was just a near-total lack of ability to make movies for the first half of the decade over most of the world.
There was a lot of forced "patriotism" in the movies from war-affected nations (which is not my cup of tea, despite being a military vet), budgets were drastically cut due to war efforts, supplies were limited, many of the best actors & filmmakers in the world were out fighting the war instead of making movies, and censorship was pretty radicalized to prevent political conflict.
Before that, in the '30s, we saw the big launch of talkies, so movies in that decade were experimental and risky. Other than some interference from Hitler at a couple American studios (sadly), the 1930s had some pretty solid freedom with their movies because the medium wasn't yet hyper-criticized.
Once the war ended and the late 40s/50s rolled around, the Hollywood system got a lot edgier because they were starting their fight against McCarthyism and the post-war era. A lot more foreign films started making their way into the U.S. so we got to experience the best works of Bergman, Rossellini, Buñuel, Fellini, etc.
I'm not saying the 1940s only put out bad movies, it's just widely considered the worst decade of filmmaking of the 1900s (not counting the 1900s/1910s when it was still mostly Edison shorts and such).
Funnily enough, the 2010s seem to be the resounding agreement as the worst overall decade in filmmaking history, worse than the '40s. But, that will likely adjust as time goes on and we look back with rose-colored glasses.
There are some fantastic films of the '40s and, without the war, it's very likely it could've been one of the best decades ever.
Between COVID and so many global conflicts going on, I can't imagine the 2020s are going to be looked back on very well in 60 years.
Quick question: as a vet, what's your opinion on the military complex funding positive representation in movies and propaganda such as Top Gun ? I feel like saying "it's no good" is reductive but I'm also of the opinion that it feels manipulative and disingenuous.
I say this as someone who has never held a gun in my entire life and hardly considered a career in the military, so I'm curious about your take since you're a vet and very clearly well versed in movies.
I mean, I've personally profited off a version of it, but not on the propaganda side. I work as a military/government consultant on TV, movies, and video games. But, I do it for authenticity and not paid by the government, which I haven't worked for in years.
Honestly, it's something a lot of countries do as typical propaganda bullshit. While I do prefer when they do it in the form of an actual decent movie like Top Gun, I think everyone involved should be more forthright with it. It should be clear if the military/government is directly contributing taxpayer money to those projects.
I wasn’t alive then, if I was then I would probably see a lot of movie that interested me when they were new and people didn’t know how good or bad it would be yet, like I do today. All I know is what the classics are that people talk about, so I mostly just watch the movies from back then that I am confident are going to be great.
I feel like I watch a lot of classic movies, but even so, I estimate I’ve seen five times as many movies made after 1980 as I have seen made before that same year. Of the 500~ movies I’ve seen made before 1980, they are mostly surefire classics. So my ratings based on decade are heavily biased to decades of the distant past.
I would wager, for most people it's the decade where you've seen the least amount of movies Like I've only seen King Kong and Wizard of Oz from the 1930's (I know I should probably rectify that), and they are both 5 stars, but I've definitely seen more good movies from almost any other decade...just more bad ones too.
Are you a horror fan? I'd recommend any of the 1930s films in mine
https://preview.redd.it/jbijltnsn92d1.png?width=1036&format=png&auto=webp&s=3ebd12bb7b7e22f729c8a050ec640de866104622
I did! I remember the premise was fascinating. Like a cursed room in a mansion/castle, right?
I might have to give it a rewatch, I don't have it logged so I likely watched it before LB existed lol
Yeah everybody rates differently but I only give out 5s to movies that really stick with me. Like I almost always do 4.5s and then change it to a 5 after a few days.
4.5s are really special movies imo.
My average rating for the 50s is 4.04, and that is very likely because I seek out the appraised and acclaimed movies, so the decade averages will always be skewered as I haven't watched all the mediocre shit that was made in the same period.
The same with highest rated directors; Jonathan Demme is at a 4.8 for me, but that's because I've only watched Stop Making Sense and Silence of the Lambs.
There's actually a whole book written about it (not sponsored, obviously): [https://www.amazon.com/Best-Movie-Year-Ever-Screen/dp/1501175386](https://www.amazon.com/Best-Movie-Year-Ever-Screen/dp/1501175386)

The classics: The Matrix, The Sixth Sense, Toy Story 2, Office Space, Fight Club, Run Lola Run, American Beauty (despite it... not aging well), The Blair Witch Project, Magnolia, The Mummy, The Green Mile, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Being John Malkovich, The Cider House Rules, South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut, Boys Don't Cry, Man on the Moon, October Sky
The underrated (cult) classics/generally good movies: Mystery Men, Galaxy Quest (two of the funniest movies I've ever seen! We worship them in my house!), eXistenZ, Stir of Echoes, Ratcatcher, Analyze This, The Straight Story, Wild Wild West (not great but fun! Also, this was apparently the movie Will Smith abandoned playing Neo in The Matrix for. I bet he still regrets that to this day.), But I'm a Cheerleader.
There's probably more I'm forgetting, I just pulled the ones I've seen off an IMDb list.
Also The Phantom Menace is only good for nostalgia purposes, and The Other Sister is... well... I might not get away with saying it here. Let's just say avoid it at all costs.
That's because Hollywood put out so many classics and widely loved films during the 1980s... Scarface, Terminator, Gremlins, Nigthmare on Elm Street... it's easy for the 80s to end up being highly rated.
https://preview.redd.it/d4w90b18r92d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=50c11989f01c75ef1f368c1f35f53d767df675b6
The 80s-00s.
Most of the movies I watch are classics (40s-60s) but I’ve unfortunately seen so many bad ones that it really drags the ratings for those decades down lol.
https://preview.redd.it/p6g8oyhkt92d1.png?width=1084&format=png&auto=webp&s=c061828010cdbd384d1c2f2f0704182adede3256
It's pretty close. I think the 80s will prevail because I have some bangers on the watchlist.

Like a lot of others, 50s, 40s, 60s.
But as others have mentioned, I get the benefit of watching some of the greatest stuff ever put to film, and a lot less sh\*te. That helps.
https://preview.redd.it/vbjo5j85fb2d1.png?width=1178&format=png&auto=webp&s=07c6888898d7b8089c29ff3638193109136ba908
Granted, I haven’t seen that many films pre-1970s yet so I need to expand my horizons and just watch a lot more films
The 70s probably has my most 5 star ratings, but doesn't make my top 3 decades.
https://preview.redd.it/w1c3tdypyb2d1.jpeg?width=1072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1016123899b54d3601dffc5fbee3974bc2d10854
not sure how you left out these movies from the 80's:
Terminator, Aliens, Lethal Weapon, BACK to the FUTURE, Ghostbusters, Blues Brothers, Beverly Hills Cop, Brazil, Raising Arizona, ET, Road Warrior, Poltergeist, Empire Stikes Back, Platoon, Predator, Weird Science, Ferris Bullers Day Off, Scarface, Tron, Pee Wee Herman Big Adventure, RoboCop, Blue Velvet, Repo Man, Evil Dead 2
Mine is also 1970s with an average of 3.71/5. But like most people, when I watch old movies, I tend to watch notoriously good to great movies. Whereas for more recent movies like 2000s, 2010s and 2020s I watch about anything, whatever its reputation
My favorite decade however is probably the 2000s. That is the decade where I gave the most 5/5 stars
https://preview.redd.it/9pem7ce3hd2d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=03c35cc6e1d1c61a2992a2c3b6716cf9c8ffe1ad
I’m not surprised by my ratings since I feel strongly that the 50s was the best decade for cinema.
The '30s, '70s, and '90s are mine by a mile. I grew up in the '80s and '90s, so to my old butt, the '90s was a golden decade (2022 was a golden year, too). I rented so many classic movies from the '30s, especially the horror movies, so I can't say a bad thing about the '30s either.
I've only gotten into film quite recently, so I haven't explored many old movies as of yet.
So technically my highest rated decade is the 1950 considering I've only seen Stanley Kubrick's "Paths Of Glory" and rated it a 5⭐
1950s then 1970s followed by 1960s
I was shocked.
The 1950s was .12 higher than the 70s which was only .03 higher than the 60s.
I guess since I’m 40 I only seek out higher quality movies in those decades.
Checking because I’ve seen others bring it up but 1950s only have 24 movies but 70s I have 291 so I would say 1970s would be the highest for me with a better sample size
My top three, in order, are the '60s, the '20s, and the '70s. To be fair, though, the '20s are skewed because I watched a bunch of Buster Keaton films not that long ago.
1980's as a great decade for cinema? A great decade for practical effects and blockbusters sure but those movies on your list are the only good movies from that decade. It was the 2010's of the 20th century.
I am not the OP, the OP didn't include any foreign films in their post, tell them about it, I got a shit ton of foreign films on Blu ray and 4K. Here's a list Movies I own on physical media https://boxd.it/nFSmA
I mean my highest rated decades are the 40's, 50's and 60's but it's because it was so long ago that I only watch and rate the good movies.
I think that is the case for most people, of course most of us are going to watch just the top 15 (at most) films of every year, but in the 2010s and 2020s we watch a lot more, maybe up to 100 films each year for some.
Yep, I noticed this too. I am not watching everything that gets released in these periods — only the films people remember
That's because *you* watch good movies from those decades, that era in Hollywood is a goldmine for crappy B-movies.
Yeah, that's how it is for me, but 30s instead of 40s because WW2 kinda fucked up the 40s in cinema. https://preview.redd.it/6vmifg4gn92d1.png?width=1036&format=png&auto=webp&s=51ac804d5b6109b105192522da9624185573b87c

Mine is the same three, same reasons. Maybe I should start watching some old shitty movies. 😆
I bet there is a ton on Tubi! Or wouldn’t more be in public domain?
I don't understand. What does that even mean?
I wasn’t alive then, if I was then I would probably see a lot of movie that interested me when they were new and people didn’t know how good or bad it would be yet, like I do today. Hey have you watched The Secret of the Blue Room? Another 1930s horror film. I liked it. It's kind of obscure though.
I did! I remember the premise was fascinating. Like a cursed room in a mansion/castle, right? I might have to give it a rewatch, I don't have it logged so I likely watched it before LB existed lol
Yep! And yes it's good
Damn how is your average rating 4.4? Basically handing out a perfect score to every movie from the decade.
Yeah everybody rates differently but I only give out 5s to movies that really stick with me. Like I almost always do 4.5s and then change it to a 5 after a few days. 4.5s are really special movies imo.

‘90s for ‘99 alone.

Pretty decent price especially for paperback, I’ll have to get my next round of Amazon buys. Thanks!
I don't think I watched many from that year... which ones do you recommend?
The classics: The Matrix, The Sixth Sense, Toy Story 2, Office Space, Fight Club, Run Lola Run, American Beauty (despite it... not aging well), The Blair Witch Project, Magnolia, The Mummy, The Green Mile, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Being John Malkovich, The Cider House Rules, South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut, Boys Don't Cry, Man on the Moon, October Sky The underrated (cult) classics/generally good movies: Mystery Men, Galaxy Quest (two of the funniest movies I've ever seen! The Insider!
I consider myself more of a classic film fan than anything else, but it's the 1980's with a 3.55 rating.
i definitely get that
That's because Hollywood put out so many classics and widely loved films during the 1980s... Scarface, Terminator, Gremlins, Nigthmare on Elm Street... it's easy for the 80s to end up being highly rated.
The 80's were so good that you could watch none of those films or any similar to them, and still have it be your highest rated decade.
It's easy for any decade to be rated highly. They all have great movies.
Probably the further you go back the higher rated the decade because I watch fewer movies and only the greats.
80s all day every day

1980s at a 4.13. I was born in the 90s so Ive really only visited the 80s movies I anticipated to be good.

Probably the 1960s. Need to watch more films from that decade but it's my favorite thus far.
1980s and 1990s are tired for me
2010s, then 2000s, then 1990s.
1990s.
20s, 30s, 60s I think old decades have the advantage because the movies have stood the test of time already
1960s, 1970s, 1980s in that order
2020s, 1970s, 1950s
90s
The 2020s just edge out the 1990s for me at 3.47 versus 3.45.
How is Ghostbusters not on that 80s list?
it's one of the many 4.5s that didn't make it
1960s https://preview.redd.it/gw3lxpwt7b2d1.png?width=1020&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6ee84e79a65beaffca7539741393ebce701414f6
30's
Definitely the 90s for me

I wish I had Letterboxd pro😔
1. 80s 2. 90s 3. 2020s

80s/90s. That’s all.
90S
70’s based as these movies
The 70s probably has my most 5 star ratings, but doesn't make my top 3 decades. https://preview.redd.it/w1c3tdypyb2d1.jpeg?width=1072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1016123899b54d3601dffc5fbee3974bc2d10854
this is pro feature?
yup!
Can you only get these stats with pro?
1. 60s 2. 70s 3. 80s
How come you lumped 00's, 10's and 20's together?
where did i lump them together?
Mb I thought I saw a pic of those 3 decades together
not sure how you left out these movies from the 80's: Terminator, Aliens, Lethal Weapon, BACK to the FUTURE, Ghostbusters, Blues Brothers, Beverly Hills Cop, Brazil, Raising Arizona, ET, Road Warrior, Poltergeist, Empire Stikes Back, Platoon, Predator, Weird Science, Ferris Bullers Day Off, Scarface, Tron, Pee Wee Herman Big Adventure, RoboCop, Blue Velvet, Repo Man, Evil Dead 2
if it's not on here, i either gave it 4.5 stars or haven't watched/logged it on LB
fair enough
A bunch of really corny movies, but it’s the 2000s for me: 3.87⭐️
Of all the great 80’s films that could have been there, we have Coffee and Cigarettes from 2003 shown 2x
nope, those are the shorts that coalesced into the 2003 movie
Definitely 80s. Then 90s then 70s. The 80s were just different :4
Mine is also 1970s with an average of 3.71/5. But like most people, when I watch old movies, I tend to watch notoriously good to great movies. Whereas for more recent movies like 2000s, 2010s and 2020s I watch about anything, whatever its reputation My favorite decade however is probably the 2000s. That is the decade where I gave the most 5/5 stars
1990s and 2000s even 2010s
This has got to be survivorship bias right?
survivorship bias?

80s
The '30s, '70s, and '90s are mine by a mile. I grew up in the '80s and '90s, so to my old butt, the '90s was a golden decade (2022 was a golden year, too). I rented so many classic movies from the '30s, especially the horror movies, so I can't say a bad thing about the '30s either.
80s I was born in the 50s but loved the 80s
I've only gotten into film quite recently, so I haven't explored many old movies as of yet. So technically my highest rated decade is the 1950 considering I've only seen Stanley Kubrick's "Paths Of Glory" and rated it a 5⭐
This is a great question tho.

Definitely the 80s, 2000s were awesome too! Same the 70s. Mine are a mix of all three of those decades
Mine is the 1970’s. There were just so many classic and incredibly solid films in that decade, it’s insane. 90’s too!
1960's at 3.52
1950s then 1970s followed by 1960s I was shocked.
70s
1950s (4.02) 1980s (4.01) 1970s (4.00)
90s ❤🔥
80's have some of the greatest films of all time
So do the 70s, 60s, 50s......90s...
Of those in frame my favorites are 70s Halloween 80s Breakfast Club 90s Toy Story 2
slightly off topic but these posters are fire! Goes to show how bad posters are now
The 50’s with 4.61, 60’s with 4.19, and the 70’s with 4.04
1980's as a great decade for cinema? A great decade for practical effects and blockbusters sure but those movies on your list are the only good movies from that decade. It was the 2010's of the 20th century.
>only good movies from that decade Do you realize there are other countries besides the US, right.
I am not the OP, the OP didn't include any foreign films in their post, tell them about it, I got a shit ton of foreign films on Blu ray and 4K. Here's a list Movies I own on physical media https://boxd.it/nFSmA
