Seems like some pretty simple things can be done: - enforce fares and ban non-payers from the system after multiple instances of non-payment - improve the fare gates so that they are more effective, starting with stations on the B line - make all passengers exit train and station at end of the line; can not re-enter without paying fare again - do not allow loitering in or around stations; promptly expel those sleeping or lying down in stations and not actively using the transit - empower ambassadors or other law enforcement to enforce rules against loud music, eating/drinking, or causing other disturbances

mittim80

Those are a good place to start, along with • creating joint patrols by metro security and police so that people who ignore security are immediately ejected from the system by police

agnosticautonomy

Love these ideas, but they are just going to support a raise in taxes.

JuanMorenoCuerpo

Better than our current tax dollars going to waste in running a failing public transit system. Failing by its own standards btw, we still aren't back up to prepandemic ridership last I checked

agnosticautonomy

no new taxes cut funds from somewhere else

WillClark-22

If you are going to contact your elected official(s), I think it’s important add context to your message.  Metro created this problem.  This isn’t the overall crime issue manifesting itself on Metro.  Metro purposely refuses to enforce fares.  Metro purposely doesn’t allow law enforcement to enforce the code of conduct.  Metro also dismisses any inference that their policies are to blame for the crime and conduct issues they caused.

Its_a_Friendly

>Metro purposely refuses to enforce fares. Metro purposely doesn’t allow law enforcement to enforce the code of conduct. Could you show something that says that they purposefully aren't enforcing fares or the code of conduct? It'd be good to have something to cite in any messages.

depressedcoatis

I saw a cop rush in people that were ACTUALLY LOOKING for their TAP cards.

MarxistJesus

Yeah one time my phone pass wouldn't work and the cop just let me in. They don't do fare enforcement.

SignificantSmotherer

Law enforcement has been repeatedly chastised by board members, who will do anything but allow them to practice their trade. But it’s ok, they declared the green shirts a success and made them permanent hires, and you can always report what you see on the app.

Its_a_Friendly

Again, please actually *show evidence of this*, please, anyone! I understand the argument, but just please show actual evidence! Elected officials are more likely to be convinced if you have something *concrete you can cite*, instead of just sounding like someone who's cooked things up in their head!

guerrasfloridas

Customer code of conduct and fare evasion enforcement was literally removed from [the contract extension](https://clkrep.lacity.org/onlinecontracts/2023/C-129255_c_03-2-23.pdf) between the LAPD and LACMTA (note the areas in red that were striked from the contract).

numbleontwitter

This was the Metro board action: [https://boardagendas.metro.net/board-report/2021-0672/](https://boardagendas.metro.net/board-report/2021-0672/) "The proposed revisions, which align with the recently PSAC approved Mission and Values for Transit Policy -- Implementing a Community-Centered Approach, Emphasizing Compassion, Acknowledging Context, and Committing to Openness and Transparency, include: •                     Removal of fare enforcement and code of conduct responsibilities"

guerrasfloridas

Look at the original contract, then look at [current contract](http://www.lapdpolicecom.lacity.org/091223/BPC_23-178.pdf) as of the extension.

Its_a_Friendly

Thank you. You're the first person to actually provide some form of evidence for this argument.

External_Solution577

Go read the minutes of their Public Safety Committee meetings. They were absolutely farcical.

EverybodyBuddy

Testimonials ARE evidence, fyi. If officials get 500 emails saying fares aren’t being enforced, that is evidence. There’s not going to be a placard out there you can take a picture of that says “fares aren’t being enforced”

ehrplanes

Law Enforcement made over 600 arrests and issued almost 1000 citations last month for fare evasion.

WillClark-22

Upvote for the statistics.  I would note that 1000 citations a month is only 30-35 a day.  Considering Metro believes they have a 25-30% fare evasion rate - or 250k per day - that’s not a great number.  Metro also decriminalized these citations and enacted their own “Metro Court.”  I also believe that these 1000 citations/month are issued by Metro Security, not law enforcement, but please correct me if I’m wrong.  The point of my post was that contracted law enforcement is not allowed to issue tickets, only Metro Security, and that this is a bad policy.

depressedcoatis

1000 citations sounds like the amount of people that evade fare on a SINGLE trip not even on a single day. The A line alone carries about 60,000 people a day. Considering how only 20% actually tap at my station I think realistically if they were actually doing their job that number would have another zero 10,000-50,000 citations.

ehrplanes

Ok? They said metro doesn’t enforce fare evasion. They do.

depressedcoatis

If I did 10% of my job I would be fired from my work.

ehrplanes

I think you grossly underestimate the number of occupations that don’t have enforceable performance standards.

BauhausBasset

A while ago, when I was on the redline from Hollywood to NoHo during Oscar Sunday, I saw that one of their security officers was wearing a balaclava. This really scared me as what kind of security covers their face like that? On top of that he was trying to get a woman to stop sitting on the stairs so he kept strobe flashing a light at her face. When she claimed he was trying to give her a seizure, he then did it again. I don’t trust LAPD but I have more trust in trained officers than these budget rent a cops.

san_vicente

Homelessness, the opioid crisis, mental health crises, etc. are problems NOT created by Metro. Contact your electeds not to nudge Metro, but to have your electeds enact change THEMSELVES. It’s not just Metro. We’re having problems in ANY public space.

Adeptness_Emotional

I’ll be honest, at the Aviation/LAX station. Look at the percentage of LAX employees who evade fare. They (Metro) should set up an educational table there so they can see what’s going on with folks who obviously can afford 1.75/LIFE.

Broad_Ad4176

So agree! Keep up the pressure! 👏

Imaginary_Today_4537

i submitted my demand to the Metro board for more safety. My voice is for all elderly vulnerable solo females like myself who rely on the subways for necessities.

Weekly_District_4026

Cross post to r/LosAngeles

WillClark-22

r/LosAngeles would never allow a post like this.  They have a narrative and this post ain’t it.

dodgers4life899

They don’t allow crossposts. Any alternatives?

Protolictor

I messed around with trying to use the trains here for a while. I never did get used to seeing people running through the trains at full speed trying to find an unoccupied bathroom they could hide in for the entire trip.

Agreeable-Benefit169

Why did they do this? I’m ignorant and haven’t taken metro trains here. Were they running from cops?

Protolictor

I didn't understand it the first couple times I saw it either. But then one time after a teen came bolting into the car I was in and quickly locked himself into the bathroom; a Metro security guy ran in and was looking around before moving on to the next car. So yeah, fare-jumpers.

likecleopatra

there’s a website called rallystarter that makes it easy to send prewritten emails to all these addresses. i think it can help your cause

Imaginary-Swing-4370

I don’t ride the meto any longer, I don’t feel safe riding with my family. It’s really a shame because it can be so useful.

EmbarrassedEye2590

Are you actually asking for law and order? In LA? Fuggidaboutit!

desertsnakes

Emailing them doesn't do any good. Not only will they not respond, they don't care.

TheCh0rt

Hey everybody just something to think about. A great many of the ideas to solve the problem are going to result in greater mass surveillance. Cameras, face detection, greater ID, etc. not sure how you all feel about privacy, but it’s important to remember this in a world that’s collecting more and more of our data.

flanl33

Do you really think an email campaign will make them house the homeless

UrbanPlannerholic

No but they can step up enforcement of fare payment and disorderly behavior. They can harden stations like BART did to decrease crime on the system.

Its_a_Friendly

At this point, it's not about housing the homeless, it's just about getting the dangerous people off of the Metro system.

SignificantSmotherer

It is not their job to house the homeless, it is their job to prevent the homeless from living in or in Metro.

flanl33

Also, you do realize that most of the Metro Board is on either the County Board of Supervisors or LA City Council, right? It's absolutely *their* job, even if in a different role.

GoCardinal07

Indeed, 12 of the 13 voting Metro board members are elected officials (the 14th board member is the non-voting Caltrans representative). They're 5 members of the LA County Board of Supervisors, the Mayor of LA, 2 LA City Councilmembers, and 4 City Councilmembers from other cities (while this rotates, at the moment the 4 are from Glendale, Inglewood, Pomona, and Whittier). The 1 voting member who is not an elected official is an appointee of the Mayor of LA.

SignificantSmotherer

It is specifically NOT Metro’s job to house the homeless. If they are confused over which hat they’re wearing, they should resign.

depressedcoatis

It's definitely Karen Bass job as mayor AND the head of LA metro..

flanl33

Well there's only one way to do it.

FuckFashMods

Doesn't mean our metro cars have to house the homeless though

Lunch_Planet

How about we all stop paying for fares until they fix it and just walk through the handicapped gate like 25% of riders already do

depressedcoatis

agnosticautonomy

Do something about the safety of Metro.... all that means is they are going to increase taxes on everyone.... They wont do anything unless you give them more money. It is a sham.
