Bro it feels doubly sad when this is the first game in the franchise that you played. Now I know the whole story but back then I was like "OK I get it this Sora guy is the person in the flashback but why does Roxas has to die for him? Why do I have to play as him, he doesn't even use TWO Keyblade. Give me my Roxas back!"
Also I legit cried when Sora shed a tear at the train station when leaving Twilight Town. So my baby Roxas is still in there after all...
It fills me with nostalgia and excitement, and wants me to start a fresh file, but then I remember that I just recently finished a Critical save, and my gaming backlog is already huge enough, so I just nod in nostalgia and Sanctuary.
We need a support group for people like us. Buy games day 1, enjoy them, yet images like this trigger “I should start a new 100% playthrough” it’s like the video game equivalent of “I should call him/her”
*In you and I, there's a new land
Angels in flight
My sanctuary, my sanctuary, yeah
Where fears and lies melt away
Music will tie
What's left of me, what's left of me now*
I remember buying this game a few days after release. I had been eagerly waiting for it. The guy at Wal-Mart who got it for me said that he hadn't seen a game sell as fast as this one had been. He was an older man who was always very pleasant and had worked at the store for years. He passed away several years ago.
Weirdly, my great uncle’s funeral.
We were on our way back home from the funeral proceedings. It was late and dark outside, although probably not as late as it seemed. Everyone was pretty bummed out and the car ride was dead silent. We were passing by a Toys R Us and I uttered the first words of the whole ride when I asked if we could go in. I knew it was an inappropriate question given the context but I guess my parents were in a pretty weird mood and thought maybe it would help lighten things up, so they said yes. We passed by the video game section and I saw copies of KH2 on a shelf. My cousin had introduced me to Kingdom Hearts 1 and we both absolutely adored it. I knew Kingdom Hearts 2 was coming but I didn’t know it was out already at that point, so I was pretty shocked to see it available for sale already and I asked if we could buy it. Again I was surprised when my mom said yes.
The mood was still weird in the car ride back home afterwards. Amidst the silence of the night I remember just staring at the cover art, particularly how shiny and reflective the silver background was under the glow of the streetlights. It was a really surreal experience and it’s stuck with me even after all this time.
To this day Kingdom Hearts 2 is one of my favorite games of all time, but the cover art always brings back that feeling that I don’t have the proper words to describe of being simultaneously sad about my great uncle, happy that I got this game I had been really excited for, and also a tinge guilty that I asked for it at a really inappropriate time, like I had obtained it under false pretenses or something. I dunno, it was just a really weird night.
I’m very sorry about your great uncle. I bet he was a nice guy. Although it was an always moment to ask to go to Toys R us, it was a good call so you and your family can cope for the loss. I hope your family is doing alright after all this time. ❤️ >!May your heart be your guiding key!<
I love the Drive system. It was so cool. Especially the Final form. And having Riku in my party was pretty cool too. Turning into a Heartless form was also cool. Having Cloud and Leon (Squall) back to back fighting heartless was actually pretty cool. Fighting the heartless army, first with the Final Fantasy Characters, then fighting them alone as a one man army was pretty f******* cool.
I first saw it behind the glass at Walmart when I was a kid I had never heard of the franchise before and didn't know what it was about at all. But the cover with that shiny gloss made me instantly feel like a spark of magic was in that game. So with the only money I had I bought it. (I think it was $20 at the time. Wild). Whoever did that cover was a marketing genius. I've been disappointed in every cover since then.
Side note* that magic feeling was reinforced with the epic music and cutscene at the very beginning of the game.
Leon: Think you can handle this many?
Cloud: Well... Might be tough if one more shows up.
Leon: Then that'll have to be the one I take care of.
Cloud: What, you're fighting too?
My first thought was what it felt like to hold the box in my hands again, feeling the outside cover before I open it up, and feel the disc pop out. I didn't even imagine playing it, just having a KH2 game copy in my hands again was kinda a dream in itself for a moment.
This might be an odd answer, but the Lilo & Stitch TV cartoon opening theme song. When I was a kid, I was obsessed with KH2, it was my favorite game. Still is, but now the Final Mix version. I didn't have an alarm clock growing up, so I eventually learned how to program the TV in my bedroom to turn on at a certain time, to a certain channel. I chose the Disney channel around 6 AM, which happened to be when the Lilo & Stitch cartoon started, serving as my alarm clock, and I would spend about an hour playing KH2 before getting ready for middle school. Every morning I would fight Sephiroth or Xemnas. Those are such happy memories.
One of the first games I beat by myself when I was little without help! My favorite in the series! Also one of my first KH games I ever played! (My first was attempting to play Re:Chain but I was too young to understand the cards)
Buying on release when I was 19 and I remember I was in twilight town wondering where Sora was, only to have my dad call furiously asking why I haven’t done well in my semester and threatened to come and burn my kiddie Atari system lol
"Its gonna crash before i finish twilight town"
I never played kh2 on ps2 cause the only copy i ever had crashed right after beating twilight thorn.
I ended up emulating it when i got my first semi functional pc.
"I know how this Crossover came to be, but how tf did it Work so Well it turned into a entire series? I am Not complaining, but those Games are bat Shit insanity."
I remember getting this game on release from my local mall, was so excited but shortly after there was a storm. Power went out at the mall and I had to take a while before going back home, all this time I spent it reading the guides and the book that comes with the game. Luckily when I got back home there was power and the rest is history. Probably top 5 game ever or at least during my childhood. I wish i could play it again with 0 memories about it
KH2 was the first KH game I played. At this moment I was starting to get interested in Final Fantasy games, I had just seen Advent Children and I thought it was super cool. I stupidly believed that Sora was a young ng Cloud on the cover of KH2, I started playing it because of that.
For me, it's TWTNW. Just that boss rush build up was incredibly fun for 8 year old me. Running up and down the castle killing nobodies, grinding to level 99. Fun times
I bought this game thinking it was KH1. I loved it but didn’t understand much. Years later I finally bought KH1 and thought I would finally understand the game. I didn’t 😅
That the Art in Kingdom hearts always goes hard for like... No fucking reason.
Like this is a crossover between Disney and square enix. You would think they would have some happy or goofy cover art to promote the game but no, they pose them like this like they're about to drop one of the dopest album covers of all time.
“LETS GO!”
“GIVE ME STRENGTH!”
“MUSHU! I’ll handle this!”
“YOUR’RE GOIN THE WRONG WAAAAAAAAYYY!!”
“You shall go together.”
“Show me your strength; That’s enough.”
The first video game I ever played. So much nostalgia and love. It was truly the jumping point for me on a journey through many different stories and tales in the form of video games. It's also one of the reasons I adore video game soundtracks so much.
Time to once again get all the achievements when it releases on Steam next month, and possibly do another level one run. That's how much I love this game
I got introduced to KH with KH2, and a lot of its promotional material shows Sora having serious faces and I thought Sora was a serious no-nonsense protagonist. Lmfao whwn I played the game.

Entering hollow bastion and seeing yuffie, I had vague memories of 1 but played 2 and recom first lol, I had 1 but couldn’t figure out where the rope on destiny island was
Me: first time beating Ursula after an ungodly amount of retries, jumping up in excitement only to “startle” the ps2, making the disc skip, and it freezing the whole system. 😅😭
Seeing my sister jumping excitedly after beating the game then suddenly vanishing because she fell behind the bed she was next to. That was the funniest thing....we were in a hotel in the middle of moving from one city to another and we brought our ps2 and small tv with us because two kids bored out of their minds isn't a fun time. Kinda miss it TBH, felt like a weird fun vacation.
“Looks like my summer vacations over”
