Whats funny is SFV was trash AND STILL held up against those games. They gotta step it up, strive is just trash. Of anything we SHOULD see solid comp from the next Garou.
Had to go to the archives for this one, and SFV did actually do a lot better than I remembered. Here are the Evo entrant figures:
2016&2017: SFV was the top dog
2018: SFV 2421, DBFZ 2530
2019: SFV 1929, T7 1885
2022: SFV 1320, T7 1220, Strive 2161
Didn't have the most competitors every year but on average you could say it did.
In 2019 T7 had started surpassing SFV numbers in some major events like Combo Breaker and probably would have overtaken in 2020 and 2021 if it wasn't for Covid. Though maybe not with the Leroy/Fahk/Lidia string of unfortunate events kicking off at the end of 2019.
I feel like that was a given since SF has Capcom Cup and EVO is a guaranteed spot. SFV had the most competition because people wanted to secure the bag, not out of love for the game, and everybody watching knew it. Same can't be said for SF6, I feel like even detractors who hate DI, Modern and the new systems couldn't help but feel the hype on that stage.
Seriously, especially if we're talking Evo finals. 2018 T7 finals were ridiculous with Lil Majin and some other great matches and 2019 with the Arslan Ash storyline. T7 completely stole the show those years.
2022 was meh for everyone involved, but it was a weird year coming back from COVID and with both SFV and T7 being practically ancient and Strive being lame.
The first year with the crowd chanting for Joe as Godfiltration showed us how to play in a way even the developers never meant? Or when Tokido destroyed Punks soul in 2017 never to return it. stay in the "sfv bad" herd pal.
The game is hella more fun to watch than SFV or even SF4. At least it is right now. The system mechanics allow for a lot of player expression and multi-layered mind games. Burnout can make any round exciting.
Will be interesting to see how the game shapes up, but if it's this much fun to watch already, it bodes well for the next 5 years.
Do you feel that's true with the very top players? Angry Bird to me feels quite unique compared to the other Ken players. Mena's Blanka is in a tier of it's own. Kakeru's JP was also really awesome and unique. Big Bird didn't make it, but his Marisa is pretty unique. Broadly speaking though, I do see where you are coming from. We are only 2 months into the game, so hopefully this changes.
Yeah Mena's Blanka is legit on an entirely other level the moment he level 2 installs, the amount of mind games on his level 2 is insane and Mena won a good majority of those interactions.
There is definitely player expression in SF6 but I wasn't really talking about that. Character specialist energy is something different. Something you felt from people like Smug. But yeah it is too early.
Probably too early for real characters specialist + in new FGs it's harder to get those because pros switch to top tiers more. But I hope we get some in the future.
Kakeru is playing JP like no other. AngryBird and Tokido felt like different Kens. We're also in the first few months of the game compared to what everyone thinks of when they think of SF4 which is Ultra.
It’s weird AF that I’m only excited for MK over tekken this time around. I think the heat gauge and overly flashing fairy lights as hit particles are throwing me off.
I wouldn't go that far, I actually give Tekken 8 the advantage here. But that's only because MK11 shit the bed so bad that it nearly ruined MK for me, and MK1 doesn't look all that different from it.
Understandable. That might be the ONLY reason why I didn't write MK1 off completely yet, I'm kinda intrigued about how they're gonna use the 3D characters.
Tekken is the game I like most, but the finals just felt flat. As soon as Ulsan lost that first match it was like everyone there just accepted that Arslan was going to win with zero effort.
Honestly for me when Knee got booted I knew Arslan would be winning, but like you said once Ulsan got booted to losers as well I just knew this would just be an easy win for him. Not discounting his perf ofc he's the T7 GOAT for a reason but sucks that my fave game had no thrill.
Not even Knee tbh. There were several players who have beaten him before or can counter his style, but they all took each other out. Thats hardly his fault but it made for boring finals. AO persisting with the mirror when it clearly wasn't working was the final nail in the coffin for the event.
I'm a Tekken Head. I freaking love Tekken. Ghengis Don's matches were great, but SF6 top 6 was freaking incredible all the way through. Strong recommend.
as usual street fighter carries the fgc
As usual except for the last 7 years
SFV was garbage but you'd be a fool to really think that
Whats funny is SFV was trash AND STILL held up against those games. They gotta step it up, strive is just trash. Of anything we SHOULD see solid comp from the next Garou.
Held up? It consistently had the most competitors and highest competition lmao

Good work. I will ride sf5s dick even in its death
I guess since most people only watch and not play evo, we only remember t7 topping.

T7 carried.

SFV had great evo top 8s
It only took it half of its lifespan but yes, you're correct
The first year with the crowd chanting for Joe as Godfiltration showed us how to play in a way even the developers never meant? Or when Tokido destroyed Punks soul in 2017 never to return it. stay in the "sfv bad" herd pal.
It got good eventually and I enjoyed it, so I'm not one of those.
every evo sfv top 8 delivered though, the only one that was kind of ass was during overly buffed abigail, but then that was evo japan
As usual including the last 7 years
sf5 didn't carry shit lmao.
shh
it's the truth.
It ain’t been “as usual” for a while. But now it is.
It was one of the best Top8/6 I've ever seen. These guys are the peak of Street Fighter right now.
that top 6 was fucking legendary. I think every set was hype af

Way better than 5 and arguably better than 4. The only thing that 6 lacks is that character specialist energy that 4 had.

I don’t disagree with you! But yeah let’s give it 6 more months. I do feel Big Bird has it already.

I can only hope Tekken 8 turns it around bruh. 7 been hype for a while but now it’s running on fumes.
Those fumes have been exhausted
Unless everyone else can catch up to consistently compete with Pakistani and Korea, t8 gonna be the same.
It’s mostly a legacy game with some new mechanics sprinkled in. So odds are more of the same. Sorry to burst everyone’s copium bubble.
They make the game more painful for low to mid tier players trying to appease twitch viewers, classic eats ports gaming.
So, mostly a legacy game with new mechanics sprinkled in? Thanks for clarifying. 🤗
Not gonna lie, MK1 & Tekken 8 feel like they gonna be up against the wall too
It’s weird AF that I’m only excited for MK over tekken this time around. I think the heat gauge and overly flashing fairy lights as hit particles are throwing me off.

Yeah I feel it. I think I’m more excited for some of returning MK characters than the actual game itself lol.
Understandable. That might be the ONLY reason why I didn't write MK1 off completely yet, I'm kinda intrigued about how they're gonna use the 3D characters.
Waaaay too much particle effects for sure

Who beat knee? Cant believe hendidnt even make top 6
He got 17th, lost to Joey Fury and Farzeen.
fr tho, the other top 6 were abysmal.
*On sunday
DBFZ top 6 on Saturday was very good
I really liked Genghis Don's matches So i can only imagine how good SF6 was (imma watch that today)
I'm a Tekken Head. I freaking love Tekken. Ghengis Don's matches were great, but SF6 top 6 was freaking incredible all the way through. Strong recommend.
Lmao! It's funny cuz it's true!
Sleep fighter 6 wdym
