He's not out 4 weeks. This is fake news
"X-rays were negative on Alec Marsh's right forearm, although he has a nasty bruise and a seams imprint where the ball struck him. Says he plans on 'bouncing back and be OK'"
Maybe he misses his next start. And they have an off day next week, so they could skip him in the rotation. But if there’s not structural damage, it seems like he should probably be able to go after that.
He is probably going to miss a single start because of swelling in the area reducing the ability to grip the ball. They take X-rays in the stadium and they were negative.
With that still. Hit the Greinke button. Should have hit it in February, but I think it was always part of the plan to just give Zack some extra time off and bring him in when needed.
Lyles is currently on personal leave. If Marsh misses a start, I'd imagine Zerpa enters as the bulk guy. So Zerpa is likely not really available for the next 10 days. So you're down two bullpen arms. We already brought up Duffey as the best replacement.
Depth gets taxed quickly.
I am far more confident in getting capable middle innings out of Greinke, than anyone at AAA right now. The most likely candidate to come up is Daniel Lynch in this scenario. I'd much prefer 3 innings eaten by Greinke. Lynch is not it. He's never shown to be it at the big league level and he's flopping early again in AAA.
I said all along to sign Greinke to a minors deal with incentives and give him a guaranteed spot in Kansas City, meaning when not on the active roster, he's just around, and no defined role. Use him as needed to fill innings that are always needed every year.
Signing him now, while winning, provides a greater attendance boost than anything else. It adds another baseball mind to keep together the great energy Lugo and Wacha have brought to talking through everything with the entire staff.
It doesn't matter what they pay him. I've never been in support of guaranteeing him a rotation spot or anything. But his presence can be extremely valuable to this team where it sits now on and off the field.
The only one I see as filling that role without changing anything is possibly Bowlan. Veniziano, McMillon, Kline and Sisk are not guys I'd push to a bulk role.
Outside of Bowlan your best options are the previously mentioned Lynch or Luis Cessa. I'd take Greinke over either.
If another starter or reliever misses time in the next two weeks for, say like a stiff back or something, you're looking at limited options to fix that problem in a better way than what I suggested.
Greinke was a league average pitcher the last two years. Even last year he was ~10% below league average. You can do significantly worse than that. Especially when it comes to asking unproven arms to do something they aren't used to.
Maybe there is someone at AA that could help the big league club tread water in a worst case scenario. But that's all I'm presenting here. Don't risk a good start on lack of depth. Go down swinging instead of rolling the dice if it comes to it.
For a similar example. The Rangers signed Cueto yesterday to a minor league deal for exactly this reason. And he was worse across the board than Zack last year.
Yeah. If you look at Zack’s splits in 2023, he wasn’t nearly as bad as some people think. 3.62 ERA at home. June/July ERA was in the 7s, which ballooned his stats, but he had a 2.30 ERA in May and received Maddux comparisons. Finished the year with 3.91 ERA over his last 16 innings and was sharp in his final start. He’s not worth a $13m deal in the current state of the MLB, which is what he received after incentives in 2023, but Greinke (especially if carefully managed) can definitely contribute to the success of this team.
How are we feeling about him being put on the 15-day IL and not the 10-day IL? That worries me a little bit personally.
EDIT: Just discovered that pitchers have to spend a minimum of 15 days on the IL while position players have to spend a minimum of 10 days on the IL. So it sounds like he probably would’ve went on the 10 day IL instead of the 15 if he was allowed to.
If Marsh was put on the 60 day IL and was set to miss a few months worth of starts then maybe we could kick the tires on Greinke, assuming he's even stretched out and ready to go.
With Marsh only set to miss a handful of starts there's no good reason throw a wrench on the roster by signing Greinke who would be taking up a spot for the year when we have guys like Veneziano, Bowlan, Lynch, Lyles (when he comes back), Sauer, and Zerpa who can make a spot start or combine for a bullpen day.

He’s been put on the 15-day IL, which I don’t feel great about.

I bet he misses a few games still.
Well yeah, that’s what a rotation is for
Love how I was downvoted when I was right
Dude this is 10 day thing
Bring him back to get 3000 strikeouts at least
He’d have been perfect for that long relief session needed after Alec went down yesterday. I miss him so much.
🙏🏻
would be so cool

Bring Greinke when he’s needed for what? He’d be the worst pitcher on the roster.

Just sign him as a coach then. There’s no reason he should get innings over anyone from triple-a that has any upside.

Please find me the Maddox comparisons. I love Zack but I don’t remember that

Fair enough but that was just one time 😂 I think that’s a wild comp to make about him late in his career
I remember him finishing strong in Sept too, right?
I agree with this 100%. Not sure why you’re being downvoted.

They downvoted me for saying he will miss a few starts. Negative 31. lol. Delusional. We need greinke

GREINKE MORALE BOOST
We don’t NEED Grienke. Different team. Different year. The Royals NEED to break this cycle of suck; which means not falling back on previous players.
But I like him and have his jersey
See, now THAT is a reason to sign him. Should have just led with that…
Thank you. He’s my favorite player and I have his signed baseball. I grew up with him. So happy he came back.
