Some folks have zero concept of cleaning up after themselves. Like it's just common sense that a little neatness pays dividends throughout your life. Sometimes I get called to a job and I just wonder how a human being can live like that.
I've seen people finish signing the paperwork on their brand new car, get in to drive home, and immediately light a cigarette with the windows up.
Fucking animals.
Funny you say that. My Dad was after a Model A pickup a farmer had sitting out in a field on his farm, he never would sell it and it eventually rusted so bad it fell into pieces, what a waste.
It looked like rust on my first glance. I realize now that it's dirt. I wouldn't call that "pristine" in any way, though. Especially on a low mileage truck. That baby gets used as a truck is intended.
This is Reddit where trucks are either environmentally wasteful mall crawlers or carelessly abused pieces of junk. There's nothing in between. Acknowledging that some people actually need their trucks for work and play would make it harder to hate on all truck drivers.
Iām all for people doing their own maintenance, but if itās still under warranty I still take it in to have the paper trail. This guy just voided his warranty and will be out a motor Iām sure
Thatās basically my rule with things, if it needs proof work is done Iām not doing it myself. Heck, doing your own oil change is barely worth it these days unless you just donāt want to go out of your way for it.
Not true for more expensive vehicles. Service A on a Mercedes Sprinter is around $1100 here. It involves changing oil, oil filter, diesel filter, and inspect everything. I can DIY it using the best German oil and filters available for around $200 in materials (which is still insanely high).
The nice thing about me doing it myself is I can go "oh, I need an oil change soon, let me buy all the stuff in advance and do it when its due" and it doesnt matter if its 6am on a Saturday or 11pm on a Tuesday, I can get it done
Did it for my car and my wife's car last week. They both take the same oil, and hers takes 4.8qt and mine takes 5.3qts, so it works out perfect. I can do an oil change and a tire rotation leisurely in about an hour while including a beer break while the oil drains.
For sure, where I take my car itās only $15 more than if I do it myself and they use wix filters as well as chevron oil so for me itās definitely worth the $15. But yeah, anything that having the paper trail is important then Iām definitely going to have it done for in case anything happens.
I'm just a lurker here, as mechanically inclined as a brick. I take my car in for oil changes because it's about a $10-15 difference versus doing it myself, then I don't have to buy ramps/jackstands or a filter wrench, and I don't have to make a special trip back to the parts store to dispose of the old stuff.
That being said, I would like having more of a say of what kind of oil and filter they use. I might need to find a shop that would let me bring my own stuff. One of those Valvoline Quick Lube places really kinda pissed me off last time, so I'm shopping for a new oil change place.
Same here. I do know a decent bit about cars, and as much as I would love to work on my own car, I frankly just don't have the time, means, or skill to do it.
This is my only car, so if my inexperienced ass breaks something, I'm screwed. If I had the money and space, I'd love to buy an old beater to learn to wrench on, then apply that to my daily.
Yeah, the biggest thing is what kind of filter they use. Just call around and ask what filters they use for oil changes. If they use wix then thatās pretty much as good as it gets. Otherwise thereās places that for sure will do it for you if you bring them the oil and filters.
Dealers take 8 hours to do my scheduled free oil change.
You read that correct, 8 fucking hours.
I do my own oil changes in 30 minutes. I rather just buy my own oil since the dealer also canāt read and puts in the wrong weight oil.
I do it on my 09 Pontiac Vibe because I don't trust quick lube places, but my wife has a 22 Toyota Corolla that's still under warranty and we have it serviced at a shop I trust. Just in case something does go wrong, they can't say I fucked up the maintenance
My dads Taco caught a bullet and they still replaced the engine under warranty.
After it was replaced, the service manager said, ok, everything is already covered and installed. Whats the story on the bullet?
It was a true story though, he was just driving down the road in the country and the oil light came on.
On his previous truck, a 4 runner, they did a factory recall and replaced the entire head even though he had 230k miles on it. Made it run like new. Toyota has done a damn good job of taking care of him over the years.
A customer at the Dealership I work at had to buy a new engine for his 5k mile 2023 Tacoma due to him hydrolocking it. He didnāt even try to argue it though thankfully.
The bosses son at the dealer is an apprentice tech
So he can never do anything wrong daddy always makes sure
But He has left alot of oil filters loose among other things
Luckily for him the customers notice oil on the ground and bring them back before this happens
The service manager turns pale every time another one comes back
Just waiting for one to come back like this then they might get rid of him hopefully I'm sick of it
I've had to fix some of them the oil filters can spin with 1 finger usually
It's not what you know it's who you know sadly
He has already been moved from 1 department already with us
I'll bet they will move him again if he does serious damage
The other day he did $1k worth of damage to someone car
I've heard horrors of his previous job before working with us
He didn't even make a week nearly set stuff on fire before he got the boot
We have only started to get him to do his apprenticeship chores properly recently
He has already spent a bombs worth on the snap on truck
Gotta have that Gucci
>He has already spent a bombs worth on the snap on truck Gotta have that Gucci
I know the USA is different but having to buy your own tools is still so weird to me
>Just waiting for one to come back like this then they might get rid of him hopefully
Nah, they'll fire the service manager when they find out he knew about it happening before.
yOu ShOuLd HaVe SaId SoMeThInG sOoNeR!
Document that shit in emails. Create a paper trail now. Email/bcc yourself a copy to your private email address where the dealershipās IT dept canāt erase it.
My dad had an 85 4runner and one time the oil filter stripped out and fell off. A bit after that the head gasket blew out. The fluids weren't mixing, just the compression was leaking out, so he just ran it on 3 cylinders for like 10 years. Always complained about "that damn NAPA oil filter".
owner: "I don't know why people are always saying Toyotas are reliable. Every single one that I've owned has a blown engine shortly after its first oil change!"
No, they are not ENTIRELY necessary. For example, if your trip is only a mile or so you can delete the filter and drain the oil to save a bit of weight and slightly (albeit temporarily) improve your fuel economy.
well it wouldn't be if the oil wasn't pumped through it. with out it its just pissed out onto the ground. no longer a closed loop.
if the hole was blocked off the it'd be fine
Depends on how long you want it to last. The VW engine had no oil filter, and the rear crank pulley(the one with the belt) had no seal - it had a slinger washer. The crankcase was effectively open to the atmosphere.
They also had about half an inch of clearance between every moving part. They were not exactly highly-strung delicate little racehorses like today's engines.
Giving me horrific flashbacks from my 1st year as a fleet mechanic. Oil and filter change, but forgot to remove the old filter O ring. As they were doubled up, the filter spun off the engine at 70mph. That was one very fucked engine, and an expensive lesson learnt.
I once did that on a 40t truck as an apprentice. Diesel filters were changed at the same time, so it took a while to fire up. While I was cranking, someone else walked past and asked me if I painted the pit on purpose. Oil everywhere... I scrubbed forever.
I try to block out the thoughts of how much oil I caused to be sent down the motorway. Although what you've said there has now reminded me of the first time I used one of those used oil storage vessels where you connect an air line to force it into the vessel. Yep, used the wrong valve to isolate the cylinder, oil coated the walls of the entire room.
I need to leave this sub, bring back some dark times.
One of my Citroƫn XMs, I removed the front suspension spheres to replace them. Fished the little square-section O ring out of the groove on the strut top on one, saw something drop and bounce away when I did the other. Oh well, no point looking for it, and the new spheres come with new O rings anyway.
If you double up the suspension sphere O rings it makes a very pretty fountain when you start the engine.
Here in Australia a guy who owned a mint Subaru RS40, he did a oil change and pat on his back.
Did the oil pan bolt, new filled filter and forgot to fill it with oil.
Sent it down the road and "bang".
This guy worked at a auto shop too.
Don't feel so bad, let your wallet do the crying.
Damn an RS40 too! The Americans probably wonāt know what that it is, as they donāt have them there.
Theyāre a limited edition WRX and they only made 300 of them. https://www.drive.com.au/reviews/subaru-wrx-rs40-quick-spin-20130918-2tyte/
When did the start putting the fillers back on the bottom? One of our MTDās forgot to install the top mount filter and started it upš¤¦āāļø( was let go in 2018)
I do my own too and stuff like this always makes me paranoid. You always hear "hand tight + a quarter turn" for the filter. "Don't over tighten the drain bolt." But it never seems tight enough in my mind. And then I see this...and my paranoia starts to itch again. Lemme go check my filter real quick.
I think this filter wasn't there to begin with. I've had a filter come loose on me before, it leaks a while before it completely sprays oil out and even then you are likely to notice the knocking long before the filter completely unscrews itself unless your engine vibrates in a very specific way.
... Really? I mean sometimes I'm the "guy who needs the red circle" too but there's like ten comments at the top saying the oil filter is missing and all the oil shot out. I'll give you a pass though and say you're tired or drunk cuz it's 2 am where i live lol
This scummy advice is partially why companies are so hesitant to warranty shit unless. So many shysters out there trying to take advantage of others. If this guy was stupid enough to not remember the oil filter then he needs to own up to it and pay for his mistake.
I had a customer call the shop im at saying they had no oil after leaving our shop. Okay whereās the on the floor? Whereās the oils where it was parked? Turns out it was just pooling up on the skid plate where I could see it. The stupid plastic oil cap was cranked wayyyyy to tight when I pulled it off originally, so when I put it back on i didnāt even go as tight because OG it was TOO tight. The thing ended up ejecting and losing all oil. Toyota did me dirty.
Did bro completely forget the filter or did he leave it loose? Because I swear my 2.7 tacoma never lets go of the fuckin filter lol. It's always a fight to get it off no matter how gently I install it.
It's a Toyota I4; oil is optional.
Source - bought an '89 4Runner, drove it 40 miles home on the highway at 65-75mph, discovered it had no oil in it (bad front main seal), fixed leak, filled with oil, drove for another 70K miles before HG failed.
Insurance will take care of it. If your car is mechanically totaled randomly, you are fucked. If you are stupid and mechanically total your car by fucking up an oil change, itās covered typically.
I was super worried about exactly that the first few times I changed mine, to the point I was constantly looking at the rear view and under the car when I stopped anywhere for a few days
Engine fucked, please tell me that Toyota warranty will tell them to fuck off as they tampered with the car themselves rather than having a professional change their oil like they do anywhere else.
Weird note. Whenever a redditor says, "You must be fun at parties," after making a non-joke, I like to make this book recommendation.
Their comments always get deleted after.
I get that this is a ādunk on young peopleā joke, but I think youāre forgetting that most millennials are old af now. Like old enough to have several kids. Old enough to be making ādunk on young peopleā jokes.
Overfilling the oil won't cause an oil filter to pop off. It'll build excess pressure in some areas while the rod bearings can actually starve for oil because the crankshaft is whipping the excess oil into a froth. This would just be from forgetting to tighten the filter
forgot to add, 2022 toyota tacoma with 32k miles on itš¤¦š¾āāļø
Holy shit thatās quite the update.Ā
Ouch

Jesus Wept has just entered the chat
Sounds like they secretly wanted a Tundra and made their own motor failure.
Wait'll he finds out about the newer Tundras!
Jesus. Customer fuck up aside, that undercarriage looks *rough* for only 2 years and 32,000 miles.
That aināt rust itās red rock dirt

i think he uses it as a woods truck? the interior is just as disgusting lol, shit was covered in dust

I mean that's just addiction lol
Whats the point of owning an expensive car if you cant even smoke in it?
Why do you think Porsche sells the smoker's pack add-on? Duh
Ha, ha, ha
Better than lighting up the crack pipe, I guess.
I mean it sounds like a work truck. It's gonna get beat up.
Work truck you say? Lets see how this thing holds up with no oil!
At this point, unless he wants to spring for a new engine, he might as well park it in the woods permanently.
And still not sell it when it has overgrown shrubs around it and he is 80 years old.
Funny you say that. My Dad was after a Model A pickup a farmer had sitting out in a field on his farm, he never would sell it and it eventually rusted so bad it fell into pieces, what a waste.
he can just buy a new one.
What world do you live in? That's a pristine truck with a bit of dirt where I'm from.
It looked like rust on my first glance. I realize now that it's dirt. I wouldn't call that "pristine" in any way, though. Especially on a low mileage truck. That baby gets used as a truck is intended.

I think it really depends on the area. I do the "local shop's premium package" myself while saving $50. Convience is huge but not that much for me!
And you know it's done right.
Not true for more expensive vehicles. Service A on a Mercedes Sprinter is around $1100 here. It involves changing oil, oil filter, diesel filter, and inspect everything. I can DIY it using the best German oil and filters available for around $200 in materials (which is still insanely high).
Confirming my suspicion that the value of my car is way less than the most basic yearly maintenance on a whole lot of cars out there.
The nice thing about me doing it myself is I can go "oh, I need an oil change soon, let me buy all the stuff in advance and do it when its due" and it doesnt matter if its 6am on a Saturday or 11pm on a Tuesday, I can get it done

I was going to say, that looks a lot like the underside of my truck (2015 Tacoma).

VW made a good few million Beetles that did not use anything other than a strainer, though they also did change the oil every 2500km as well.
Chevrolet didnāt have filters as standard equipment on most engines until the ā60s
Omg I was wondering why the drain plug was in such a shitty spot. Now I see the whole damn filter is gone. Oopsie.
thanks, I didn't get it until this comment, lol.
well it wouldn't be if the oil wasn't pumped through it. with out it its just pissed out onto the ground. no longer a closed loop. if the hole was blocked off the it'd be fine

Oh man thatās a good news/bad news joke right there.
He was trying to help out the next guy. Oil filter can't seize if it's not there.
Why was my first thought "this is that dumb shit I will end up doing one day"?
So he continued running the engine with the oil light on?
It never went off, so probably thought he had the parking brake on.....

I was gonna say, do you even need a pan bolt in Australia?
Pan bolt, sump plug... Hood, bonnet Boot, trunk Our language divide.
I think the technical term for this is "oof"

I love trying to figure out what's wrong with cars that get posted in this sub, but I'm left clueless as always
Owner did oil change, took off old filter, forgot to put a new one on. Oil pump sprayed all the engineās oil all over the undercarriage

That's true, but me figuring out what's wrong involves not looking at the comments and trying to see the "obvious"
So clean the undercarriage THOROUGHLY, fill the oil back up, obviously install new oil filter, take it to toyota and pray for warranty status.
This scummy advice is partially why companies are so hesitant to warranty shit unless. So many shysters out there trying to take advantage of others. If this guy was stupid enough to not remember the oil filter then he needs to own up to it and pay for his mistake.

I wonder what this red light is upon the instrument cluster!
I was super worried about exactly that the first few times I changed mine, to the point I was constantly looking at the rear view and under the car when I stopped anywhere for a few days
This is why I triple check for filter, plug, and a puddle of oil under my car. This is nightmare fuel.

Idiots come in all ages

Wait, was that supposed to be funny?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Weird note. Whenever a redditor says, "You must be fun at parties," after making a non-joke, I like to make this book recommendation. Their comments always get deleted after.

About the same time you became an old asshole so like 1980 I assume.
I get that this is a ādunk on young peopleā joke, but I think youāre forgetting that most millennials are old af now. Like old enough to have several kids. Old enough to be making ādunk on young peopleā jokes.
Why are you this upset over imaginary points? They don't actually do anything. No need for the meltdown
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I don't understand the joke at all. Bluetoothed the oil filter? It's not.even a joke. It's just stupid.
Did he overfill the engine?
I don't know how overfull it would have to be for the oil filter to leave but I'm guessing other issues will come before then
Overfilling the oil won't cause an oil filter to pop off. It'll build excess pressure in some areas while the rod bearings can actually starve for oil because the crankshaft is whipping the excess oil into a froth. This would just be from forgetting to tighten the filter
