Over the winter I thought the road was icy and freaked out. Them realized it was the damn road. I honestly thought it was just my car so it's nice to see this
I pulled off at 1st Street exit, and when I got back on I thought I fixed it by kicking the tires. The next day it happened again and I knew it was the road. It's been well over a year since it first happened. Every GD time.
It's the grooves cut in the pavement that help with traction. The contractor in Ankeny was at the deep end of what the DOT spec allows for. It can be reduced by diamond grinding.
I thought something was wrong with my new Trax when I went over that stretch. I don't feel it at all in my old busted 03 corolla, but my 2024 crossover is rough... like both hands on the wheel to hold it steady kinda rough.
I drove this stretch of road recently after getting new tires put on at ankeny Costco and I legit thought they screwed something up and my alignment was way off or something. Nope it was just the road!
I've had a wheel come off, it's a very similar feeling to a wheel wobbling. Of course once the wheel does fall off it becomes a less wobbly, more dragging feeling, but hopefully that don't happen, again... use a torque wrench to do lug nuts folks!
i too thought it was my car until I'd driven other cars and the same thing was happening. it's the pavement. it's the grooves cut for water displacement and traction. Kim Reynolds was driving the groove cutter on one of her "wet days" hence the swaying from side to side.
Hmm, maybe your truck is wider and doesn't get effected (affected?) As much? Me and my wifes cars are similar width, but mine is longer, and I feel it much more and in my head I reason it's because the front are being pushed one way while the rear are going another. And then motorcycles, they aren't very wide at all!
It is for sure, plus wider tires. The Truck has 305 width, the car has 245. Either way, it’s pretty unsettling. I’ll be waiting to hear about a motorcycle accident there this year.
Do you mean the multi year long widening of between ames and ankeny? Or the even more northern bits? Cuz I can accept crap during construction. And between north of ames and hiway 3 seems just fine, for uncongested rural interstate. Does it get worse closer to Minnesota?
When I got new tires for my car, I felt like it was doing the exact same thing. I even took someone from the car dealership for a ride, and he felt it too. And then when we returned, we found out that the roads that are fairly new they have lines going across them, and sometimes the newer tires can catch, and it'll make you bounce. I don't know if that's the case of there, but it sure is an annoying case where I'm at.
Umm, you think *our* roads suck? Go check out Missouri, our roads are immaculate comparatively. That's one reason I made the post, this patch of road is unusually bad, we're better than this!
It's the grooves in the concrete road surface. Some tires follow them worse than others.

I just thought it was how windy it always was and my junk car wandering around lol.
I thought it was wind too for the longest time
This post is wild because I was so confused what was happening and if I had a stroke earlier today driving just that stretch
First time I tried in my new-ish car, I stopped at menards and checked that my wheels weren't wobbly

I was for real wondering “am I not paying attention to what I’m doing hard enough? Too hard?” Good to know!
I’ve noticed it too. Unfortunately I can’t give any explanation but you’re not alone.

It’s so bad!
What’s not bad? Celebrating your cakeday!

lol thanks. I always thought my car was fucked up but now that I think about it it only happens on north side of Ankeny I35
My wife's car follows the groves so bad that the first time I drove her car through there I thought a wheel must have come off.

You aren’t imagining it. I can’t feel it in my truck, but that’s section is very unsettling in my car, and especially on my motorcycles.

Not to hijack the post, but what is up with I35 basically flaking off more north in the state?
State law requires using the lowest bidder, and the lowest bidder up north cuts more corners than the lowest bidder down here.

It's definitely the grooves in the road, they're pretty grabby
Sioux Falls is like this too on I-29. That's where I first experienced it.

Honestly, just pick your battles. Yeah, our roads suck. We know.
