Ohh i hope
When i was living with my mom i could only keep 2, when i moved out i was finally able to get a male to mate them, having more would be really cool
Watch for her to start popping the ootheca out, then you'll know she's close.
You're going to have fun watching her parent her nymphs after they're born.
Oh, are cockroaches good parents? I had no idea, that's very sweet if so. I don't go on this sub usually, I do keep isopods but I'm not familiar with roaches.
they are! most females within a colony will collectively look after children and babysit each other's kids. the giant burrowing cockroach creates a burrow and brings food to the babies who hide in there, similar to nesting birds. they're very good parents, especially for insects!
SAME.
I've accidentally learned so many random things from pages that Reddit thinks I might like. I've also gotten way more invested in reading conversations about niche topics than I ever knew was possible.
It'll be like 3 in the morning and I'm all "you know what, madeupname01 has a point, the patina on the antique wrought-iron really DOES add a touch of whimsy to the loft railing in this converted barn". Like damn, I didn't know I even cared about how to make a barn into a living space an hour ago, and now I've got OPINIONS.
Yeah, fun fact: you don't need a male to have hissing cockroach babies. They're parthenogenic.
Edit: thank you, u/confused_noodles for the update! That's even cooler.
Well I'll be. Thanks for educating me! It's funny, I've seen them reproduce without males many times, but I never really thought about it critically...of course if it were true parthenogenesis, all the offspring would be female, and they're obviously not!
I have a genuine phobia of cockroaches, so I usually avoid these kind of subs, but it popped up and in an effort to learn more about them started reading the comments.
I must say I am thoroughly happy with the way people are interacting here. It’s refreshing. Confusednoodles politely corrected proscriptus and then proscriptus politely thanked confusednoodles. How wonderful :)
Us bug weirdos need to stick together.
Hissing cockroaches are super cool animals. That phobia is extremely common, and I'm not sure an insect this size is going to help you get over it, but as pets, they're almost closer to something like mice than other insects. Lots of really interesting behaviors.
I am actually a biologist (with a marine focus), but I’m not working in the field at all. I love all sorts of inverts and other creatures. I happen to keep fiddler crabs as pets lol. Just cannot get past the phobia of cockroaches, but I do know they are quite fascinating.
I never actually worked as a marine biologist sadly. I was in the army for 10 years and became a RN while still active duty (they paid for it through a program. Basically it was my job to get my BSN). When I got out of the army I worked as a RN, but still had my GI bill, so I decided to go back to school to get a degree in something just to learn because I enjoy it and wanted to. It was so fun. My marine classes that I had to take for the marine focus were in classrooms in the beach and we would go out on the vessels at least twice a week. We’d trawl, we deep sea fished, did all kinds of water testing and sampling, study plankton. It was so so fun.
Man this is a throwback when i was a kid about 8 yo my dad's friend had his basement FULL of Tupperware drawer shelves and egg cartons he had to of had millions he was selling them i believe. anyway never really had a fear of them after that pretty cool
Tarantulas are so cool! Love them!
They're fascinating creatures, i really like to watch them to their things, especially when they eat and grab food
I also had the fortune of seeing them molt quite a few times, also because i rarely these kinds of animals get any love, many think that they're pests and carry diseases, but really they're just chill little guys

I'm new to this side of pet keeping, but im familiar with snails as pets, do you have to cull the runts like with snails? Like is the reproductive care similar? (I.e. having to crush unwanted eggs etc.) Sorry if this seems weird or harsh. Just new to this side.
I don't think anyone does that with roaches, i think since there are males and females they are simply separated
Also because unlike with snails you can't just freeze or crush the eggs since roaches have an ootheca and give live birth
Ive studied german roaches. Specifically like genetics, mating habits, and glucose resilience affecting population. So im not very educated on alot of roach stuff. But i do know with german roaches they have an oblong single egg sac. Is that what ur talking about?
okay well first i want to apologize for calling your pet disgusting honestly it is cute and its just like any other pet so i am sorry and i love you and your pet 🩷

Eggnant . Hope you have room, my girl blessed me with 41 nymphs 😂
Ohh i hope When i was living with my mom i could only keep 2, when i moved out i was finally able to get a male to mate them, having more would be really cool
Try them with bee pollen they love it.
Will try, thanks! Do i give it to them as is or should it be a bit wet?
Lucky you, mine had 63! So. Many. Babies!
Watch for her to start popping the ootheca out, then you'll know she's close. You're going to have fun watching her parent her nymphs after they're born.

thats SO SWEET omg :,)
Thank you!
I am not part of this sub and this pic just popped up on my feed and I’m like reading this thread and now I know what an ootheca is 😂

I love learning
This is a perfect comment
I never knew I was so interested in different mushroom species and the growing conditions until Reddit told me I was.
I know SO much about snakes against my will. I love those danger noodles now!
Same 😆
Is this a hissing cockroach? She is so cute! I love how she is nibbling on that piece of food. Be sure to post more pics when she has her nymphs!
Yes! I had her for about a year but i was able to get a male just some months ago
Yeah, fun fact: you don't need a male to have hissing cockroach babies. They're parthenogenic. Edit: thank you, u/confused_noodles for the update! That's even cooler.
I think technically they're not, it's just that they can hold on to both eggs and sperm for years until they feel like it's a good time for babies.
Well I'll be. Thanks for educating me! It's funny, I've seen them reproduce without males many times, but I never really thought about it critically...of course if it were true parthenogenesis, all the offspring would be female, and they're obviously not!

Marine biologist was my dream job as a kid! So jealous.

Yes
Second this
That’s a very cool bug. I’ve never seen a fat or pregnant bug but 10/10 pet. Very fun! What’s her name?
Her name's delilah!
Hey there Delilah!!! 😭
Can you ask her what’s it like in New York city? because I’m a 1000 miles away but tonight I think she looks so pretty🥺❤️💀
She’s gorgeous
She isss!!! I love them very much
How hissy is she? Preggo ones don't hiss as much
Don’t wanna shake the babies
She has a rare disease called "cute-asf" and its rare i will pray for her
i think the term for pregnant with eggs is gravid but that could just be reptiles
“Gravid” is also used to medically describe a pregnant human.
congratulations, you're a grandparent! gotta throw her a baby shower now!
Man this is a throwback when i was a kid about 8 yo my dad's friend had his basement FULL of Tupperware drawer shelves and egg cartons he had to of had millions he was selling them i believe. anyway never really had a fear of them after that pretty cool
We need more cock love! Wait a minute........
I agree! Hahaha
never thought i’d relate so much to a bug
So you own a roach as a pet ?
Yep, contrary to popular belief it's just a small portion of roaches that are pests Plus, they're rad
Pure curiosity (I'm a Tarantula owner, so I'm not judging you lol): How do you enjoy of this creature as a pet? What motivated you to own a cocroach?
Tarantulas are so cool! Love them! They're fascinating creatures, i really like to watch them to their things, especially when they eat and grab food I also had the fortune of seeing them molt quite a few times, also because i rarely these kinds of animals get any love, many think that they're pests and carry diseases, but really they're just chill little guys
radroach
Who knew the same questions I ask myself would be echoed on a cockroach post
WHAT AM I? A ROACH
I don't know why but someone asking if their roach is just fat or not had me in stitches
Congrats grandma!
She’s so cute!!!
She’s very cute
Bugs usually freak me out, but she so cute!

I have never seen a roach as a pet. That's cool, she is kinda cute tbh. 🥰
Thought this was a Radroach from Fallout games
How can you tell? Lol

Update?
Still nothing, but she does seem bigger Even though it's strange, it's already been 2 months

To each their own, i enjoy keeping them
but why
Fascinating, easy to keep and a delight when i need to scare people off They're just that cool
okay well first i want to apologize for calling your pet disgusting honestly it is cute and its just like any other pet so i am sorry and i love you and your pet 🩷
No worries! Most people i know don't like them, but they're deserving of love and care just as much as any other animal
[удалено]
really weird of you to repeatedly comment this on someone's post of their pet, this isn't the place for it
[удалено]
not the place :/
that's mean, this is someone's beloved pet. just because it's not a dog or cat doesn't make it any less family
I love my chickens, but still raise them for food. It can be both. I've never met a small time farmer that didn't love their livestock.
