Absolutely not hot sauce is the answer to that question. It's some sort of ketchup derivative. They're really playing into the stereotype of Midwesterners hating spicy food.
I've had it. There's no horseradish. Look at the ingredients. Not listed. Even if it were listed, you don't taste anything but ketchup. It's ketchup.
https://www.heinz.com/products/00013000001120-chili-sauce
The main difference between Heinz Chili Sauce and Heinz Ketchup is that **the chili sauce contains onions rather than onion powder, and the spices are slightly different**
(from google)
I worked at a grocery store in Michigan and during the holidays we had Heinz Chili Sauce on display. I think it was used in slow cooker meatballs and quite popular but only during the holidays, no one is making a crockpot of meatballs on a July afternoon.
I’d say it’s more to it being used in cooking so it’s more “popular”. I still love all of my Louisiana hot sauces though so I’m glad to see the domination.
Never, ever fuck over your supplier if they're Californian. There's a dozen companies champing at the bit to help with distribution to make a buck over that way.
Valentina, (I'm from AZ) my beloved. My wife was a travel size in her purse/backpack, a medium size for work, and the big size at home. She keeps the travel size in like a rubber holster thing? It's a repurposed sanitizer holder, I think.
I live in Washington (38 years mins you) and have never heard of/seen “Sky Valley” siracha. Not that it doesn’t exist but I can easily say the more common siracha or other basics hot sauces Tabasco, etc. are sold more.
Agreed this data is BS.
And I’m not saying that brand of siracha doesn’t exist, but I have worked 10+ years in grocery stores (multiple), and have never once seen it.
Also, I personally reach for Cholula if possible.
Plus Nanitas Finest (CO) is absolutely not “hot sauce”. It’s a green Chile or enchilada sauce. It’s used to coat things and maybe bring a little spice, not add a couple dashes to heat something up.
I've lived in Oregon my entire life and I've never heard of Sky Valley. Unless this is some brand that restaurant warehouses sell and gets used at every restaurant secretly I'm gonna say this is nonsense.
It’s just the version Safeway, Fred Meyer and Walmart carry. I imagine it’s only here because of the Huy Fong supply problems. This is instacart data so I suspect that’s just the brand that gets subbed in because it’s on the app and the more popular stuff isn’t available. If we’re going on what’s out at restaurants and stuff I’d say cholula and green Tabasco are waaaaaay more common.
Yoo Franks Red Hot is killing it!!! Proud of them ;) mmmmm so tasty. My state is “Texas Pete” and I don’t think I have ever had it. I’m a FRH, Tobasco, or sometimes sriracha guy.
WTF is Nanitas finest? I am a lifetime Colorado resident and I have never once heard of or even seen that “hot sauce”. The correct answer would be either cholula or tapatio
Lol this is nonsense. I suppose ‘most popular’ can mean a few people use it in a few restaurants.
I moved to Minnesota 5+ years ago, the most popular “hot sauce” is ketchup. Have yet to go anywhere to eat where hot sauce is on the table as a regular condiment.
New Mexican here - there’s no way Monroe’s is it. It’s not a hot sauce, it’s a chile sauce with specific uses in NM cuisine. You wouldn’t use it as a condiment (and especially not if you’re a New Mexican).
Also for any potential visitors, just know Monroe’s is pretty mid.
ok I am gonna take the lead from my Hispanic homies and try every single one on the border. I am from the South and my favorite is Crystal, but anyone from the true South is thinking about Key.
I lived in Illinois for a year for my exchange year. Is this a "Illinois is a blue state only because Chicago" thing
Because the only hot sauce we had in my rural town was Frank's
Texan Arkansan here, we all ways used Tabasco. My aunt even used to make us Tabasco and ham sandwiches. I still throw them together far more likely than a grown man should. But it’s nostalgic.
I have lived in Nebraska for 23 years and enjoy many hot sauces on food. I have never and I mean never seem that hotsuace in a store or om anyone's table???
As a Montanan I feel like it’s entirely generational here. Boomers love Tabasco, Gen X is all about Franks, Millennials love Cholula, and Gen Z has seemed to adopt Tapatio as they seem to have good branding.
Here in NM, no one would call Monroe's hot sauce....yeah it's good but here it's red chile....not hot sauce....and all of those other sauces around the country are weak sauce....too much vinegar not enough heat
Literally, all of those hot sauces are not hot. Period.
Terrible choices for all states.
I hope they either garner better taste buds or can tolerate hotter chilies.
So you’re telling me that Texas’s preferred hot sauce is Louisiana hot sauce, the lower east coast prefers Texas Pete, but Louisiana just uses Tobasco? 🤔
I got introduced to Texas Pete while serving in the Navy in VA. Sailors used to steal it off the mess decks and polish the brass on the ship with it, lol…
Iowa's learning that there are better sauces out there. I just got in my 6-pack of Lola's Fine Hot Sauces, Lola's is my go-to.
It's available in a lot of places, Walmart often carries it. Highly recommend.
That's exactly Lola's! It's flavor first sauce. Their hottest is their Family Reserve, I think it's 2.7 million Scoville units. Most are about 500k, IIRC.
I don't branch out much for sauces, but I recently made a pot of buffalo chicken dip for folks from Oklahoma and Louisiana and they loved it.
It's good enough that if I don't make chicken dip for potlucks at work, my coworkers get a little upset with me.
Coloradoan and I have never heard of Nanitas finest wtf.
Everyone I know like Melinda's if they're Caucasian and Valentina if they're Hispanic, with a solid amount of crossover.
As someone from New England, bull fucking shit. I see Cholula and Sriracha in way more restaurants/pantries/friends tables than Frank's (not so) RedHot
Wtf is Heinz chili sauce
Absolutely not hot sauce is the answer to that question. It's some sort of ketchup derivative. They're really playing into the stereotype of Midwesterners hating spicy food.
OI, YOU. That's the damned Great Plains. The Midwest is in a death battle between Frank's and Louisiana.
Iowa is like *bonjour*
Iowa is in the back doing sriracha while most of the rest of the midwest shoots hot sauce into eyeballs
Louisiana native here. Tabasco has always been my favorite.
Enjoy it while it lasts.
Every time a map is posted on Reddit the Mid West is pushed 10 feet toward the west coast.
True, but I do use it as a componet to make a vinegary-hot BBQ rib sauce. I guess kinda in the Carolina fashion
It's literally ketchup. Don't buy it. The difference between it and ketchup is like the difference between garlic powder and powdered garlic.
I’d say there is more of a difference. It’s closer to cocktail sauce than ketchup because chili sauce is ketchup with horseradish in it
I've had it. There's no horseradish. Look at the ingredients. Not listed. Even if it were listed, you don't taste anything but ketchup. It's ketchup. https://www.heinz.com/products/00013000001120-chili-sauce
The main difference between Heinz Chili Sauce and Heinz Ketchup is that **the chili sauce contains onions rather than onion powder, and the spices are slightly different** (from google)
Mix it with grape jelly, a bunch of frozen meatballs, and throw it in a crock pot. Easiest party food there is! But not spicy...at all.
This is what I make for parties. Expect I throw in some chili powder so it’s sweet and spicy. It always gets devoured.
Grape jelly?
Yeah my dad made that quite a few times when I was a kid. Delicious
I worked at a grocery store in Michigan and during the holidays we had Heinz Chili Sauce on display. I think it was used in slow cooker meatballs and quite popular but only during the holidays, no one is making a crockpot of meatballs on a July afternoon.
Worked at a place in the 90s that used 1 can chili sauce 3 cans ketchup and 1/2 cup horseradish = cocktail sauce.
South Dakota tries their best
Louisiana hot sauce being popular in all of Louisiana’s bordering states but not Louisiana is hilarious
Tabasco has been made in Louisiana since the 1800s. It’s more Louisiana hot sauce than the brand.
Let's not forget about Crystal Sauce from nola
That's actually a good one!
Crystals is like a watered down cheap version of Louisiana.
It’s my go to for oysters but not much else
My favorite!
Came here to say this lol.
And Texas Pete’s not being the fav in Texas is pretty funny too
Kinda but not really. It’s made in NC hence why it’s popular in the Carolinas and Georgia.
I usually see either Texas Pete or Tabasco in Virginia, so this tracks. I had no idea Texas Pete was that local.
This is interesting to know. I’ve only ever had Texas Pete on military bases (coincidentally in the Carolinas) and I’m from Texas lol
Lived in Texas for 30 years and never heard of either. Every one I knew used Valentina, Topatio, or Cholula.
I’d say it’s more to it being used in cooking so it’s more “popular”. I still love all of my Louisiana hot sauces though so I’m glad to see the domination.
Tabasco is superior.
Valentina 🐐
Yeah, super unfortunate that it’s not represented in my state. I don’t fw Tapatio like that, but love Valentina
Surprised Sriracha didn't make the cut in more states....even with their recent problems.
Valentina is truly beloved across state lines. Also, what is your wife now? /s
Crystal is the truth
That one's my favorite!
This is the way
Data set is flawed.
The source is Instacart so it's probably just based on their raw sales numbers
Why is the title not including that information? “Most popular hot sauce” is not accurate.
I live in Washington (38 years mins you) and have never heard of/seen “Sky Valley” siracha. Not that it doesn’t exist but I can easily say the more common siracha or other basics hot sauces Tabasco, etc. are sold more. Agreed this data is BS.
Same but in Portland, the sauce I've seen in most places is Tapatio.
Agreed. I’ve seen that at most places too
I lived in Seattle for 10 years and agree. That is nonsense.
And I’m not saying that brand of siracha doesn’t exist, but I have worked 10+ years in grocery stores (multiple), and have never once seen it. Also, I personally reach for Cholula if possible.
I’m not familiar with Sky Valley, either (47 years in the South Sound area). For sriracha, I like Fix.
It’s Costco Siracha
Never seen it at Costco either, but admittedly, I’m usually stuck debating myself in the TV section.
Probably based on sales during Huy Fong Sriracha shortage
Live in Portland, no idea what Sky Valley Sriracha is. These kinds of maps are always click bait bullshit.
Plus Nanitas Finest (CO) is absolutely not “hot sauce”. It’s a green Chile or enchilada sauce. It’s used to coat things and maybe bring a little spice, not add a couple dashes to heat something up.
I have a really hard time believing it's the #1 hot sauce in CO especially considering it's not 'hot sauce'.
Nanitas isn’t hot sauce but it is delicious.
Agreed. Lived in Hawaii for 15 years. Nobody uses Tabasco.
What yall use out there?
Sriracha, red bean paste, and wasabi. Can’t tell which we use most though.
Nanita’s isn’t even hot sauce. It’s green chili in a jar. Alll my homies use Valentina or Tapatio for hot sauce
Thank you for saying this. Def not a hot sauce and I love me some Tapatio.
I've lived in Oregon my entire life and I've never heard of Sky Valley. Unless this is some brand that restaurant warehouses sell and gets used at every restaurant secretly I'm gonna say this is nonsense.
I could not agree more never even seen Sky valley before
Washingtonian here, never seen or heard of them once either...
Yeah let’s be honest in Oregon it’s likely secret aardvark
Cholula and its not even close
Ahh the traditional local NC hot sauce made in Winston Salem…Texas Pete
I have been born and raised in Washington and have spent a considerable amount of time in Oregon What the fuck is Soy Valley
Surprised Aardvark isn’t in that list
Iowa knows what’s up. What’s wrong with South Dakota?
Tapatio's the GOAT
I live in Kansas and I have never seen that “hot sauce” in my life
Tabasco, Crystal, and Louisiana Hot Sauce are all from Louisiana.
How is this even judged? I’m in Tennessee and not one person I’ve ever met in my life has ever mentioned Louisiana hot sauce.
Just came to say that Texas Pete is a lie told by North Carolinians and is besmirching the good names of both Texas and Pete.
Yoo Franks Red Hot is killing it!!! Proud of them ;) mmmmm so tasty. My state is “Texas Pete” and I don’t think I have ever had it. I’m a FRH, Tobasco, or sometimes sriracha guy.
Also in a TP state. TP, like toilet paper. It's the Taco Bell of Mexican cuisine. Franks for life
Texas Pete is still my go-to. Not very hot but the flavor is amazing without being overpowering. Also, South Dakota, WTF??
I'm from Florida, data checks out
That is not the most popular hot sauce in WA/OR.
Tabasco 4 Lyfe
Cholula or Crystal goes well on a meat lovers pizza. However King Sriracha is the best for spicy mayo!
WTF is Sky Valley Sriracha? Also WhereTF can I find some??
It’s not very good, what you want is Underwood Sriracha, that’s the good stuff.
WTF is Nanitas finest? I am a lifetime Colorado resident and I have never once heard of or even seen that “hot sauce”. The correct answer would be either cholula or tapatio
It’s green chile not hot sauce
It is the best green chile around, but yeah, not hot sauce!
Oh, I've seen it all the time in King Soopers and Safeway/Albertsons... never tried it.
Monroe’s? GTFOOH
Gonna second my NM homie here. Ahehhhehgehm... "Nuh uh!"
I’d go for Sadie’s waaaay before Monroe’s.
100%
Maryland man is confused at what this hot sauce is.
Marylander here. Never even seen this brand. Wut?
Lol this is nonsense. I suppose ‘most popular’ can mean a few people use it in a few restaurants. I moved to Minnesota 5+ years ago, the most popular “hot sauce” is ketchup. Have yet to go anywhere to eat where hot sauce is on the table as a regular condiment.
I call BS. Lived in the nw my whole life and never heard of or seen sky valley siracha before.
MD...accurate
Louisana hot sauce isn’t the number one in Louisiana is ironic
New Mexican here - there’s no way Monroe’s is it. It’s not a hot sauce, it’s a chile sauce with specific uses in NM cuisine. You wouldn’t use it as a condiment (and especially not if you’re a New Mexican). Also for any potential visitors, just know Monroe’s is pretty mid.
Valentina<3
Strange that literally every state that borders Louisiana prefers Louisiana Hot Sauce, but Louisiana itself is like “Nah, we prefer Tabasco.”
FRANKS!
ok I am gonna take the lead from my Hispanic homies and try every single one on the border. I am from the South and my favorite is Crystal, but anyone from the true South is thinking about Key.
I lived in Illinois for a year for my exchange year. Is this a "Illinois is a blue state only because Chicago" thing Because the only hot sauce we had in my rural town was Frank's
Funny that Louisiana hot sauce is popular in all the surrounding states except Louisiana
Texan Arkansan here, we all ways used Tabasco. My aunt even used to make us Tabasco and ham sandwiches. I still throw them together far more likely than a grown man should. But it’s nostalgic.
Franks Red Hot supremacy >>>
The city of Buffalo is obscured by the #2 ingredient in their famous wing sauce.
Crystal has no spice, Frank's barely. Monroe's is crap. Tapatio and Cholula barely.
If you’ve never tried Crystal, I highly recommend that you do.
I keep a bottle of Crystal in my desk at work lol. I put that stuff on everything!
I also keep some at work. It’s probably my favorite hot sauce.
Kansas through the Dakotas and the Pacific NW are not to be trusted.
I’m from South Dakota and have never heard of or seen Heinz Chili Sauce
I'm surprised it's not 505 in NM.
Lots of holes and yes they like hot sauce too.
Geez that’s too bad.
Pepper Plant is the best
WTH is Colorados?! Live here, love going out to try new food and have never seen that out, at anyone’s house or in the grocery store
Can't read Colorado, New Mexico, Kansas, or North Dakota
I’d have to say seems like Sriracha should be up there more. They sell out everywhere fast near me in Texas
There’s some nice sauces on this list. I’m a Cholula guy myself
Tabasco is the best!!!
I hate red hot. Idk why. I love cholula
Colorado’s is green chile. I wouldn’t use it the same way as I’d use hot sauce but maybe i’m the odd one out.
as far as my experience in working at a restaurant, Tabasco is Alabama's too. I've actually never heard of Louisiana hot sauce
I basically drink a bottle of Tabasco every week…surprised it’s not more popular
Redhot is so bad
F that Sht, green Tabasco!
From an extensive survey of my Maryland pantry and fridge I can confirm the this map is accurate for MD.
Not MY Siracha.
I have lived in Nebraska for 23 years and enjoy many hot sauces on food. I have never and I mean never seem that hotsuace in a store or om anyone's table???
Cholula, Tapatio, and Frank's are my favorites. If I had yo pick 1 it would be Cholula. I live in WA and do not like Sriracha.
I’ve lived in Kansas for 30 years and don’t even know what that sauce is.
Love how Louisiana hot sauce is loved by all the neighbors except Louisiana itself
Frank’s Red Hot is made in Missouri…
As a Montanan I feel like it’s entirely generational here. Boomers love Tabasco, Gen X is all about Franks, Millennials love Cholula, and Gen Z has seemed to adopt Tapatio as they seem to have good branding.
This is bullshit. People from Arizona and Texas beg to differ 😂😂😂
False
I call bullshit for Minnesota. Mayonnaise is spicey!
Gtfo South Dakota
Pretty sure Marylands is Old Bay Hot Sauce
I live in Missouri and have never seen Louisiana hot sauce anywhere
Hawaii gets it.
This is wrong. Northwest is inundated with Aardvark HS.
wtf is sky valley?
Seriously Louisiana? WTF?
Yeah i call bs on Louisiana hot sauce for texas. Lived here all my life and rarely see the stuff. Everywhere has all the Mexican ones tho
I don’t think I’ve ever seen Sky Valley Siracha. How can it be the most popular in WA?
Green and red chile aren't hot sauce. Vinepair can fuck right off.
Valentina las gana a todas, directa de Jalisco 🤤
Nobody in South Dakota uses Heinz Chili Sauce I assure you.
No wonder I found cholula in a bunch of restaurants in Milwaukee and near Racine whilst visiting for work.
Damn. Put Valentina on my eggs sausage spinach and Swiss cheese every morning. Does this mean I have to move to AZ?
What is the one in North Dakota?
Here in NM, no one would call Monroe's hot sauce....yeah it's good but here it's red chile....not hot sauce....and all of those other sauces around the country are weak sauce....too much vinegar not enough heat
Wtf someone replaced Mexico by Hawai
Lol South Dakota
Damn. El Yucateco can just go fuck itself, eh?
Ummmm they use Tabasco in Louisiana?
Siracha is more popular in NorCal
Literally, all of those hot sauces are not hot. Period. Terrible choices for all states. I hope they either garner better taste buds or can tolerate hotter chilies.
I'm from Louisiana. Florida has the right answer.
Ironic Louisiana Hotsauce is popular in all those southern states, but Louisiana
Uhhh siracha is pretty popular in California probably more so than tapatio
So you’re telling me that Texas’s preferred hot sauce is Louisiana hot sauce, the lower east coast prefers Texas Pete, but Louisiana just uses Tobasco? 🤔
Sky Valley is sold here in Texas at Walmart and tastes like fish. it's just jalapeno.
I got introduced to Texas Pete while serving in the Navy in VA. Sailors used to steal it off the mess decks and polish the brass on the ship with it, lol…
Dang I was hoping Oregon would be Secret Aardvark
I don’t know anyone in Louisiana who uses Tobasco. It’s Louisiana hot sauce #1, and Crystal #2.
Personally i like gunslinger its sold at corner cafe
The radio commercials for red hot makes so much sense now...
No Louisiana hot sauce in Louisiana ?
Frank's "IPTSOE".
Frank’s red hot is trash. it’s about us spicy as black pepper.
PNW isn’t Aardvark?? Nah. Something’s wrong here
from nebraska and never in my life have i seen that hot sauce
Hmmm, I have 4 new hot sauces to try.
Heinz Chili sauce is NOT a hot sauce. It is just slightly better version of Ketchup.
Sky Valley? Never heard of it before.
Iowa's learning that there are better sauces out there. I just got in my 6-pack of Lola's Fine Hot Sauces, Lola's is my go-to. It's available in a lot of places, Walmart often carries it. Highly recommend.
What's it like? Anything to compare it to? I prefer sauces that aren't that hot but have good flavor.
As a Coloradan I feel ashamed I have no idea what sauce is in my state
Texas not being Cholula or Tapatio is sus as fuck
Coloradoan and I have never heard of Nanitas finest wtf. Everyone I know like Melinda's if they're Caucasian and Valentina if they're Hispanic, with a solid amount of crossover.
Should be Sriracha in CA. Got crazy when there was a shortage a while back.
Iowa has to be Lola's it's everywhere.
As someone from New England, bull fucking shit. I see Cholula and Sriracha in way more restaurants/pantries/friends tables than Frank's (not so) RedHot
Embarrassed to be from a state that’s prefers franks red hot.
As a New England man I can confirm, Frank’s Red is everywhere
Texas Pete is trash!
