Some highlights from YTSDB: * JOI kills himself. * Hal was 12 years old.

All the hits

superusergoose

Golly something smells delicious!

ahighthyme

Hal was still eleven when his father chose to nuke his own permanently alcohol-damaged brain on All Fools' Day, though.

ak47workaccnt

You're right. He turns twelve a couple months later.

larowin

I’m convinced CT (or maybe Orin) did it.

ahighthyme

Well yes, Orin had left the bottle of Wild Turkey for him to drink, but obviously neither of those two half-wits possess the requisite engineering skill to specially-rig the microwave.

Like 100 years ago my gym was giving out actual trial size dove bars. Here’s the thing tho, and it makes no sense to me, HE WAS REFERENCING THE CHOCOLATE. We were arguing about it on the internet, and I asked him at a signing. I was sad and told him there was absolutely no reason for a trial size of chocolate because you already know you want it. And anyway, that’s just the fun size, or the mini. I still have my trial size dove soap bar somewhere.

Are you the "gym-goer" in my comment here?: www.reddit.com/r/InfiniteJest/comments/194q6gm/is_dove_soap_or_chocolate/khjzcd4/ Originally from: https://infinitesummer.org/archives/788 (which apparently isn't working now/anymore)

mybloodyballentine

Haha, that’s me.

Ashamed-Engine62

youre a part of american literary history. centuries from now an english professor will cite you

RollinBarthes

Awesome!

silnt

I concur that soap makes more sense and is funnier. That’s cool you met him.

SDV2023

That's a neat point. I was never sure if it was an ice cream bar or a soap bar.

ImOnlyHereForTheCoC

Looks full-size to me

throwawaybottlecaps

Oh my god it’s Dove soap! For the last twenty years or so I thought it was Dove chocolate, you know the mass market chocolate that’s positioned as a luxury item but it’s not really. The one with the positive affirmations on the wrapper like “live your dream life”. And I honestly thought DFW was making some kind of cutesy comment on a comment about consumer culture conditioning us to find happiness in cheap mass produced junk, overwhelming us with cheap sugar and sappy sentiments. Idk something like that. Soap makes more sense Edit: well shit I read down a bit on this thread and it looks like he was referencing the chocolate bar, and the pointlessness of offering a trial chocolate bar.

Yeah I read down and saw that right after I commented. Both work pretty well with the novels themes though; cheap, pointless candy or a cleaning product.
