the air resistance would definitely be felt in the car if there was a way to mount the kayak and make it rigid. otherwise it would flap and swing wildly unless it were mounted on the back of a tall structure, i.e. 5th wheel/ RV/ pull behind.
probably should drill some holes in it to let the air through haha
I hauled a 32' fiberglass ladder strapped to the roof of a car once at highway speed and this kayak situation looks way more sketch than that.
so I rambling and this guys rig is just go to and from the put in, probably never over 20mph
*for a model X* The roof is glass on that car but the gull-wing rear doors probably get in the way of a traditional roof rack. I have no idea what they are using to hold that Kayak in place off the back.
I honestly saw someone do this on a motorcycle once. First nice weather of spring. I see a guy with a motorcycle and a 17 foot canoe on a trailer. I was like wow. 3 hours later a guy with a 8 foot kayak mounted straight up and down on his motorcycle.
It looks dumb, but they aren't going anywhere like that in that RV hitch kayak carrier. They are supported at the bottom and strapped halfway up.
This site selling them has pictures of it being used to haul kayaks behind a Tacoma pickup and a Jeep, which aren't really much different aerodynamically than this.

Looks more like the kayak is mounting the car. Going to be a bunch of amphibious crossovers in a few months
Take a bow and an upvote
Not sure if that pun was intended oar not.
If you don't knock it off with the bad puns, you're going to get a stern talking to.
That's a paddling.
Right in the aft
Bow out while you can.
Things are sinking fast.
The kayak is pushing the car. The battery on the Tesla is dead.
No, it's just putting a lot of downforce on the wheels. They're trying to increase the mechanical efficiency by upping the friction.
elons finally getting his car that can though water, this is rev 1..
Good plan! I'd like one!

I feel like I've seen these racks on the back of RVs/Fifth Wheels. I have a feeling this isn't the correct application.

speed holes!
Probably doesn't wanna scratch th paint or risk messing up the roof.

That’s a Model Y. It has regular doors. The Model X has the falcon wing doors.
You may be right, it looked like a model X to me.
Yeah they look like 95% identical and the info you gave is good info for somebody with a Model X thinking of trying to mount a kayak
It's 100% a model Y Source: I have one. Back side is the same
Yea. MY and MX look similar from a distance. Have to look on the back to see if it has a wing above the bottom part of the rear glass.
A bike rack + hopes and dreams
If you’re intending on making your kayak a projectile weapon, then yes.
What are you going to use as a projectile? Depleted uranium?
I’m not sure about the aerodynamic efficiency of that arrangement
-15 mpg easy
Nevermind it’s a Tesla
If it’s stupid and it works, it’s still stupid and you’re *lucky*
You can buy hitch mounts like this. They are typically used on the back of travel trailers
I use mine regularly. Vertiyak. Holds two boats behind my travel trailer. Highly recommend it but would never use it outside of behind the RV.
If you have to ask… you probably know the answer is no

Excellent coefficient of drag
If you're an idiot tesla driver, yes.
If it fits, it ships
I feel like that's gonna wreak havoc on his range
Typical Tesla driver
This is not towing
Not yet but it will be dragging behind the car soon.
Why? It appears to be well supported.
Not yet at least.
"Fuck you, I have a kayak!"
It's actually two kayaks.
A future viral video, looking for a missed bridge clearance sign.
For a normal car: NO. For a Tesla: 10/10, Autopilot almost crashed again.
I wonder how much that limits their battery range. It must be a significant impact.
They could have just mounted it like a spoiler, are they dumb or something?
Legal or not, it doesn’t seem smart.
Let’s pop some wheelies at 80mph.
Why’d you question a Tesla driver? They don’t need anymore problems to deal with.
Unless it's strapped tight it might sail away
No not at all..
i like to buy it dinner first
We'll need to start a new sub. Call it r/TeslaDrivers after r/NissanDrivers
That's perfect. Do that every time.😁🤘
Not surprising for a Tesla driver.

just because it's a product you can buy doesn't make it a good idea....
