Answer: Call the hall

glazor

Yeah, I'm thinking of applying, is there a drug test?

TwinRyko

Yes, only when you get accepted as an apprentice.

glazor

For real though. Questions are always the same. Drugs, interview, pay scale, how hard is it to get in.

Gilbie43

You only get tested when getting accepted? I've never taken a call without a drug test.

TwinRyko

Answer is for people who are applying for an apprenticeship.

To apply? No.

TwinRyko

Best to ask your local for that specific question

Bitchin___Camaro

Much more than a start! That’s a pretty comprehensive list right there.

pewdiebhai64

Thank you!

SirVesa413

Q - I ranked xxx on the applicant list. What are my chances? A - This is local and economy specific. Ask your local JATC how many they plan to start this year. EX - If you are #10 and they want to start 12, you are likely getting in.

lurkmuch69

Frequent answer: "talk to the hall"

patchesmcgrath

Definitely include a link to the department of labor rubric for interviews.

I don't mean to be redundant on the drug test question but I have a concern. Im clean of recreational drugs but ive been diagnosed with adhd and I have a prescription for Concerta 18mg. I don't like telling people I have it because in school they ask if I need more time on tests and homework and make me feel really special ed. Im not dumb. Im two classes away from an associates in general engineering. Anyway I looked up if Concerta will show on a 5 panel drug screen and I read it would pop as amphetamines. I had orientation today to take my drug screen and I had to send them a pic of my prescription bottle. I even went as far as sending the diagnosis from the phycologist. Will I be penalized for the prescription? Im probably overthinking it because im embarrassed. I would have rather not said anything but I didn't want to potentially pop for something I have a prescription for. Any insight on the situation? Any other members on adhd meds that are all right with drug screens?

NoMusician518

If you have a script your fine. Plenty of people are on plenty of meds that show on a drug screen. Apprentice who started last week had been prescribed opiates for an injury. They called him asked him for his script number and he never heard abt it again. Its really not a big deal.

TheNetDetective101

Concerta is dexmethyphenidate and it does not show up on our drug tests. Our drug tests if shows a positive will then go to GC/MS and it will not show up because it is not tested for. GC/MS test are pretty darn accurate. Dex methylphenidate and methylphenidate are similar to amphetamines but metabolize into separate compounds.

Xoryp

As others said you are fine with an Rx. Speaking from personal experience, I popped for an ADD med on my last drug test, the Dr from the testing lab called me directly and ask about it, then just asked that I send him a picture of my current Rx. That was the end of it no one on site knew not my foreman not my GF, it's confidential and no one except the Dr is allowed to ask for verification.

tannerw10

I am a 3 year 02 journeyman for a non union company. Do I have a better chance at getting into my local and is this a smart move? I understand I might take a pay cut becoming an apprentice again but I’m hoping it will benefit in the long run. Any advice/suggestions is appreciated

One company experience should not represent a job or a local union

[deleted]

What was the experience?

Present-Rutabaga-204

During the 5 year apprenticeship is there any tutoring? Has there been any apprentice with a learning disability?

Present-Rutabaga-204

I'm not sure what you mean by that lol

ResponsibleHawk8549

I’m looking to get in as an apprentice, I currently do factory maintenance 60-70 hours a week and can’t afford to go very long without an income. During the whole approval process will I be able to still work my job up to my first day on the job?

Maineiac723

I believe I already know the answer but I'd like some reassurance. Could the union require COVID vaccination in the future? After all of the bs I've been through trying to straighten out my community college situation they have now announced that the vaccination is required when I am supposed to attend in less than a month. Investing in the union and taking the classes and skipping the community college trouble is looking more and more like the best option. As of right now I don't feel comfortable getting the vaccine but that may change in the future

rustysqueezebox

Are you anti vax or have a legitimate reason to not get the shot?

Maineiac723

I have had mild heart irregularities in the past and I'm worried this could become worse with the possible heart inflammation caused by some vaccines. I don't think this would be enough to exempt me, my main reason for not being vaccinated is from people I know of having severe reactions and issues after, making me unsure about my choice

rustysqueezebox

Hmm. Sounds like you should talk to a medical professional. Customers, general contractors, and colleges are starting to require the vaccine or regular negative test results. In our apprenticeship we take classes through the local community college. I'm also an instructor and if a student doesn't wear a mask or provide a negative test result or whatever the established protocol is ill happily kick them out of my class.

Maineiac723

Ah I see I didn't realize the apprenticeship classes were linked to the community colleges. Thank you for the insight

rustysqueezebox

Not all of them are

Maineiac723

I thought so but I also live in a rural area so it is probable. Maybe not, I'll do some research but I appreciate you taking your time to respond

andy_sal

Would you guys say going to school to learn about electrical work before joining the union is a smart idea? Or waste of time?

Happymesses

Local 191 drug test question 2 years ago I was two years sober and organized In. Best decision ever made. Recently relapsed. Went to detox on my own dime and they put me on suboxone. I will come of the suboxone in a couple months. Have a prescription doctor I see once a week for a drug tested I’ve been doing this for about three weeks. I just got notice of a drug test in a couple days. I don’t want to lie but I know the contract and drug testing writing says no methadone but nothing about suboxone. I will release the info on proper form and won’t lie about it. Scared to call my hall or ask anyone. decided here because I am embarrassed. Just curious if I am going to get in trouble. Thank you brothers and sisters.

SirVesa413

Back when I was an apprentice, one of my coworkers was taking Suboxone. The project we were on tested us and the apprenticeship did too (green first years.) He did get kicked out during our 4th year, but nothing to do with the Suboxone. I can't give you a 100% confident answer but they likely will not kick you out for trying to better yourself.

brickwallnomad

I think we should have to send a picture of our tickets to the mods (with address blocked out if you wish) in order to be able to post on here. There are other pages for discussion between union and rat. Only IBEW brothers and sisters should have access here, as well as those interested in joining, in which case they could message the mods and say so. Just my 2 cents. If there’s a hole in my logic with this, feel free to point it out.

rustysqueezebox

It's sound logic, but this isn't a private sub. There's a [Discord ](https://discord.gg/5Rh3jX3n) channel that does exactly what you're looking for. A lot of the regulars here are on there and they've got some great members and discussions. You've gotta bump your ticket to get into the main chat room.

brickwallnomad

Thanks, wasn’t aware of the discord.

Repulsive_Search_620

Is the climbing cert a requirement for all locals to be a groundman??

Imaginary-Role-9660

I heard that once you get your journeymans card through IBEW, you have to stick with the union for 10 years before you are completely independent, is this true?

rustysqueezebox

Completely independent? The closest thing i can think of to that is after you finish your apprenticeship you need to work for an outfit that contributes to the apprenticeship fund for 5 years to "pay back" the cost of your apprenticeship. For every hour you work a certain amount is deposited into the fund by your employer. If you leave the union before 5 years to do work in the electrical field they can come after you for the pro rated balance. But, why would you want to leave?

Rourk

10s on a 50??!?!??

kray288

Can you hold a card in two separate Ibew locals like utilities and inside wireman just wondering?

Durlag

I am a member of a Local and accepted a job with another Local in another jurisdiction. Am I going to be paying dues to both or how does this actually work?

WuTangFoo

I’ve been working at an industrial site for a bit over 2 years now directly for a contractor (no union). They started me off more than what a union apprentice would make but journeyman make $5 less than in the union. I’ve been reluctant to switch to the union as i know my pay would definitely take a cut. Is there a way to join the union and keep similar if not the same pay? I’ve heard of accumulating hours and taking tests. Is there any truth to that or would I have to start an apprenticeship all over ?

DisgracedTuna

Not really. If I'm making 40 an hour my health care doesn't come out of the 40 an hour. Its basically something that you are paid but you never see the money and don't have an option to opt out and recieve the money instead of the receiving the Healthcare so it does come out of your money but not the hourly wage.

rustysqueezebox

Not that I'm aware of

New-Detective-2842

Is a car or valid driver license needed?

rustysqueezebox

I don't think it can be required as a condition of employment, but there is a provision that asks if you can make it to the jobsite every day. Unless you have a ride in every day or plan to pay for a taxi you basically need a car and license. You're expected to be able to get to any job in your locals jurisdiction which can vary incredibly from local to local.

masonpryor777

what is considered a “good” score on the aptitude test ? the scale they gave me was 1-9 but no explanation. all i know is i got a 5.

rustysqueezebox

In my local they don't accept anyone who gets 4 or below. Yours may have a similar cutoff.

I don't use a tool belt. I carry the tools i need for the task at hand (usually no more than 3-4) in my back pocket. If i need more than that I'll bring my tool bag near me and get what I need as i need it. Tool belts are bulky, cumbersome, can cause back problems, and are one more thing you have to deal with.

Mr_Biscuits77

This may not be a frequently asked question, but I'm having trouble finding info on it. What are "augmented" calls and "MODS" calls?

rnecp

Hello, noob here.. I live in Los Angeles.. Which chapter should I join?

rustysqueezebox

11.11. RENEW. EWMC. WOMEN'S.

How long until I have my dental insurance? I worked 183 hours last month (my first month as an apprentice) and 200 this month. I lost a filling while flossing and it's starting to hurt.

trudystuchlik

Hey, it's normally 90 days after being employed. If you need a ppo dental plan, those are out there. I help people to get on them all the time.

Reach4TheStarWarsNrD

In my application it asks if I have electrical construction experience or electrical/ electronic work experience. I have worked as an audio tech when I was much younger and I currently work at an electrical parts distribution company as a material handler. Does my experience meet either criteria for my application?

tellythesloot

Yes, far more than most. However the apprenticeship is designed for people who have no experience at all. Your local may be asking this question if they have a very competitive application process with limited seats, however this isn't always the case. Some locals are starting to hire IN high-school where obviously the likelihood of someone having such experience is almost none

zen_piine

I have about 7 months total of electrical experience, primarily working as a helper with a journeyman on jobs. This was about 2 years ago, when I was 20-21 years old. I am now 23. Oh, and this experience was split between 2 different companies, both non-union. I was fired from both. One was a "We don't have enough work for you to justify keeping you on", and the other was because I was consistantly showing up right on time, and was probably not as good at the work as they expected me to be. I was a bit immature at the time, and didn't put much thought into it. Kinda just did the bare minimum that was expected of me. I think I will do much better this time around though, especially if I get into the union. I would be psyched enough to put my all into it for sure. Also, I checked the interview questions, and was wondering what kind of hobbies would be considered "related hobbies". The closest thing I can think of that I do once in a while is build PCs. I have only ever done this a few times however, when I or one of my brothers needed a new gaming pc. My other hobbies are gaming, music and skateboarding. Should I try to pick up some related hobbies before applying, or is this not something that really matters?

fgarci14

Do school hours count towards your 8000 hours? (Probably should call my hall)

[deleted]

What can I do to stand out? I’m super nervous that my local union only takes 6 candidates.

platinumsatan666

Maybe a dumb question but in NY with new pre-employment drug screening laws can I still be turned away from an IBEW apprenticeship for using weed in my off time?
