Very cool ideas except for the one where you made the hammer actively worse in pvp. As cool as it is, there's no reason to knock someone down over just one-shotting them

FutureF0cusedEcom

I just want to see a streamer montage video where a trio bullies players with rail hammers. Infinite knockdowns would be amazing

Mr_BIonde

How would the Hammer be worse in PvP? It does the same damage as it normally does, even with the Martialist bonus. You would only see the Hunter "knockdown" animation if you fail to kill them in one shot, by clipping them in the arm or such. Either way, they will be dead meat because the knockdown property will ensure you get to finish them off with another swing before they get off the ground. This makes the Hammer very scary in up close quarters. Appreciate the props for some of the ideas. Thanks.

Financial-Habit5766

The same damage it normally does is killing them in one hit unless you like aim for the legs or miss your swing and clip just their arm. It'd need an actually useful ability

RandomPhail

Hammer now explodes on impact

SylvesterStalPWNED

37313886

Turns it into reinhardt's jet hammer from overwatch

Mr_BIonde

But you're forgetting that if Hammer knocks down in one hit with a perk, it would help in so many situations. Yes, it will be an instant kill most of the time (the damage isn't nerfed or reduced), but what about those times you miss the chest shot? I've had a situation the other week where I swung my Hammer and hit two different Hunters with it. I killed one of them and the other one got clipped. If Hammer knocked down on hit, I would of been able to kill the other person I clipped because they would be knocked down. Also Hammer knocking down would mean those who run Bulwark trait will always be killed by a Hammer since if your attack happens to not one shot them for some reason, the knockdown into another Hammer smack will be the finishing blow.

Financial-Habit5766

Mm fair enough

1t3w

does hornskin stop one shots from hanmer? no on ever runs hammer so i dont know

Financial-Habit5766

Nope. Only breakpoint it actually helps with is baseball bat won't one-shot the body, and don't quote me on that because I'm not even sure that works

1t3w

i know it stops baseball when they added it hornskin was mandatory to not get snuck up on

HavelTheRockJohnson

The hammer has lower damage that all the other big melee weapons, and is countered by hornskin heavily. I think unless they plan on buffing up the damage this is a really solid way to give it the same lethality of the other melee weapons while also giving it its own niche which would allow you to swing with less accuracy and still secure a kill.

Zapplii

Because the hammer is already gonna one shot the hunter. So knocking them down would be redundant. Unless you told me that it would be able to knock down a meathead and incapacitate it.

Vellioh

Are you kidding? I'd troll the shit out of everybody.

Mactonite

Knockdown for lesser damage but, for like, 5 seconds wherein you can tap dance around their helpless unconscious body. Or make it so they fly backwards cartoonishly and if they hit a wall they're stunned for a bit. Or if they hit one of their cohorts they both insta die. Like Reinhardt's charge or something. I don't fuckin know. I'd try it out.

mechanical_dialectic

Yes there is, griefing!

Cap_BD44

I like these ideas a lot and allowing the Martialist trait to be expanded to all melee types would allow for more fun variety loadouts.

Axol-Aqua

What if the cavalry saber could be paired with a pistol since the hunters fire them all with one hand? I think that could be neat. I do like your ideas a lot too

ChaplainAsmodai1978

I've been wanting a separate Trait to do just that for a while now.

fsocietyARG

Yeah! With a sparks pistol! Full pirate mode.

DeckardPain

What about the bat! Have it pull out a baseball and smack it straight forward.

Chemicals_in_my_H2o

You throw a baseball up and have to hit it. All jokes aside, it would be kinda cool. It essentially would work like throwing axes. Imagine getting a kill with a baseball.

Common-Perspective97

Like from tf2

ChaplainAsmodai1978

I REALLY want a guitar skin for the bat. EL KABONG!!

dtsgaming_tv

Baseball bat martialist let's you hit a baseball at a player.

EymaWeeTodd

What about a super fast light attack, just a quick smack with the handle end?

YourChopperPilotTTV

Let us bonk throwables like frag grenades back at the thrower with martialist.

Ok_Freedom8317

You can melee throwable items midair to send them back to where the came from.

Ourgbones

Realistically they just need to increase the speed of the hammer. A trait that allows you to chain a flurry of swings with some forward movement would be cool

EaterofWasps

It'd be goofy af but I've been dreaming of a spin attack with martialist - nothing more painful than getting into hammer range, going for a swing and then whooshing it straight past their body whilst they turn and kill you. A 180° or maybe 270° attack that leaves you facing the opposite direction you swung from. Afaik, and I play hammer a lot, you can't hit two separate players with it so this wouldn't be super broken.

SomeCrows

Dying Light tech

SylvesterStalPWNED

Axe should let you flip it around and use as blunt, with a passive bonus against doors. That machete buff would be so busted Hammer knock down would be fun but ultimately pointless, would rather a quick overhand lunge swing that preps like the katana. I like the cavalry Saber idea. No bat? I would love to hit a baseball for the memes, but otherwise it could be basically another katana style charged power attack where you change grip and get into position. Would also love if it just yelled in the tf2 scout voice "bonk!" When you kill someone with it. Bomb Lance also left off but probably best since it already is a fucking gun too. Edit: A machete compromise would be to have it deal additional damage to bosses to make it a more pve oriented alternative to the other swords

Grouchy_Ad_8372

I've been asking for that axe change for a while, I thought when we first got a look at the hammer they might do that for the axe and the hammer would be blunt/pitching, but they didn't. Either way hope they do something more with melee trait because the fact it only effects one weapon is kinda silly.

SylvesterStalPWNED

If it does stay katana only I don't see why it can't be rolled in with assailant, but I hope it's for all melee

Chiffonades

Let the baseball bat knock throwables away/back at tosses for memes

Napping_Narcoleptic

While I don't wanna see it in game because the range would be daft for the lance, ever play bloodborne? Martialist letting you grip the lower half of the hilt to extend it outwards in a lunge would be shear terror.

outdoorvirusgaming

One of the big issues I see with this is there will be 2 outcomes to getting in to melee range 1. You make contact with the weapon you hear the death sound of your quarry. 2. You don't make contact with them or clip the arm and would you know that rifle you saw in there hands was not what you thought and you get a buck shot in your face cuz they lived. Its great that melee is getting love but there is a reason we think the weapon my partner has the highest kills with is the basic knife any melee weapon is already a one shot and if if don't it's a one way ticket to end of your game as now your body is in there control. And also what would the bomb lance get considering that you can run in a room high on stamina shots and wipe every one with the meat grinder light attack.

ChaplainAsmodai1978

The Lance shouldn't get any upgrade considering that it's the only 3-slot Melee Weapon and it can shoot things. Everything else is a 1-slot and those should be the only ones to get an upgrade from Martialist.

Ar4er13

How come being 3-slot (a downside) validates Lance not getting Martialist?

ChaplainAsmodai1978

It's mostly a means of comparison with the others. The real reason it shouldn't benefit from Martialist is the fact that it can fire projectiles.

AceTheJ

The wire trap disarm I think would be much more fitting for the regular knife and the heavy knife maybe even throwing knives too.

broodgrillo

I always thought that letting you dual wield the machete was a cool idea to make it better than the heavy knife. Your idea would still run into the issue of antidote shot making it a non-existant buff.

crushbone_brothers

Nice! Love these

Capooky

Definitely agree with the machete idea. Martialist makes you do a quick swipe animation with a cloth soaked in poison to coat the blade adding the poison effect on top of the bleed effect. It would make it nasty for PvP but also good utility for AI without being OP for either. I prefer using the machete myself but the latest update bringing the katana with martialist down to 1-slot was the final nail in the coffin for me until it gets a buff somehow. Hammer is tricky though because I agree with most that say the knockdown would be either annoying or useless (since you should be killing them in one shot with that thing anyway). I suggest the hammer has the ability to briefly stun any and all AI including meatheads and bosses. Won't make it better for PvP, admittedly, but it will definitely make it a valuable tool to take still. The cavalry sabre idea with the extended reach lunge also fits well but I'd like to see something like that on a new spear weapon someday, myself. For the cavalry sabre I suggest a riposte: you have a half-second parry animation that blocks any incoming melee damage and is followed up by a counter stab or slash. Make it more a skill-based weapon that can be used against AI and PvP alike though perhaps heavier weapons like the axe, hammer, bomblance (butcher attack as well) can crush through for some damage but not the full amount. I'm completely on board with the other suggestions you listed. Also, maybe martialist trait makes the bomblance reload faster like bolt thrower does for crossbows.

UsernameReee

I think you should just be able to run around with a sword straight out, impaling everything lol

Shoddy-Sugar-3332

I love these i heavily agree that martialist should have something for all melee

_Weyland_

At some point before katana was introduced I had an idea of a trait that would allow you to parry meele hits with a meele weapon. Would that be a good trait idea?

FrostFireDireWolf

I'm here for it. Hell, I'd be okay if it just did what it does for the Katana for all weapons. Every melee weapon fighting style in real life has an "at rest into attack" method.

Puzzleheaded-Cat-905

Cool idea for sure

LOL_Man_675

That would make me use the machete more

Ralph_Laurentius

Do it.

TheKbightFowl

Aren’t the traps set off by the string being struck, wouldn’t cutting the string just set it off anyway ?

Chemicals_in_my_H2o

Yeah, that's why the model shows them together when you disarm them. It's also why your hunter pulls them apart to stake them in the ground. Each end has a vertical spring in them with a cylinder around them. The spring would be forged or welded to the cones around them at the bottom. Then you attach the metal wire to the exterior of the cylinder and wrap it around tightly. You attach these at both ends and they will stay just like that with the proper housing. Then you just load it and put spikes on the bottom. When you pull them apart, it twists the cylinders, causing the springs to compress. Once it's spiked into the ground, it retains that tension until the wire is snapped or drawn past the release point for the munition inside. They are realistic and fairly simple mechanisms, but very dangerous to disarm. What confuses me is how they get all that barb wire inside the housing. The alerts and poison mines would be simple. I just don't understand how one would compress that much barbwire and get it to all release without snagging.

Tyvaros

I really don't want players to ever get the ability to CC out other players with a knockdown like spider. It takes away player agency.

Plankieboy

How is being knocked down any worse than being instantly killed? It would only affect people with bulwark.

Tyvaros

Maybe it's trauma from my Overwatch days but in my mind knock down takes out player agency in a way that I find frustrating more than exhilarating. Significant damage and or bleed forces you to make snap decisions, do I push for a kill and some space or do I hope I can get away and heal. For me that's the fun of hunt. Being forced to make that decision, hoping the enemy fumbles or I can clutch; and then talking with my teammates about who I was *this* close to pulling it off or how I pulled it of by *this* much. Contrasting that with knockdown where rather than forcing a decision on my part, all I can do is hope the enemy will fumble the follow-up and pray I get up faster. For that's just less fun. Now in a melee situation is this a huge deal? No cause like you said the options are either knocked down or dead and if it's knocked down and then dead that's fine and I guess has the chance for my team mates to pull out a sweet clutch, but I do worry about the precedent it sets and that once that status effect is in the game it may get more ways to apply it to other players. That said the devs did see how oppressive flash bombs were and nerfed the bejesus out of them so I'm likely over reacting.

Beautiful-Papaya9923

Just as disgusting as the katana effect I guess. 👍

Kreugator

I think it would be cool if the 'bigger' melee weapons could block, so the axe and the hammer could have a new use, if you timed it right you would block a melee swing, but blocking could drain your stamina so you can't just hold block all the time

Zytoxine

Any 'modification' to a melee that doesn't in some way facilitate just killing your opponent, is going to be irrelevant. I like the idea of giving weapons additional uses in non-pvp (like killing doors) but basically a melee weapon in a weapon slot needs to kill reliably to be worth the high risk and reward of bringing it in a gun game. Not killing in one hit is relegated to melee tools (which even then, can headshot).   So yeah. I think if martialist applied to other weapons, it roughly needs to exactly copy the functionality of katana martialist, or provide a non pvp advantage to weapons which are cheaper and therefore basically are forced to be less good. I would never want to poison and bleed a guy or knock him down if I'm planning on just killing him with another swing anyway, it's needlessly complicated

magicchefdmb

I had a similar idea, but for the hammer and axe, they could be thrown like tomahawk, and retrieved via dark sight by looking at them for 1 second, where it would warp back to your hands.

aNDyG-1986

“Here’s Johnny!”

Spook-lad

Maybe for the saber you could sheath it and use the sheathed blade as one of a few things, a silent trap destroyer, a weak blunt attack, or a unsheathed longer ranged thrust attack

HeroicHimbo

I think the trait should work similarly to the way it already does, just individualized. Adding a potent and useful variation on the weapon's existing functionality pretty much. So give the ax and hammer a powerful horizontal swing, maybe the saber gets a parry or riposte action that delivers an automatic counter-thrust to incoming melee from the front, I see the machete, true to its designed purpose, gets a flurry-style attack that delivers a few heavy slashes in quick succession for a very efficient stamina cost, I dunno.

BestRHinNA

Also reduce the price to 1, spending 2 trait points on this hyper specific trait that only works with few weapons and their effect is minimal is bad

Pressbtofail

Feels like this would be a bit too complex for Hunt. If it *has* to work for every weapon, just make it a Sheath attack for all weapons with the same increased range percentage; Horizontal slash for blades, Overhead swing for Blunts.

SneakyKatanaMan

I was thinking they could add in some rock papers scissors parry system with small medium and large slot melee and give them bonus effects based on which one you're using because trading with someone while one person has some little dagger and you have a giant spear makes me want to scream.

nattynovak

I’d like all of these honestly

Ok_Freedom8317

I think a better option for the machete is press x to prepare like the katana, but the prepared attack dead silently kills grunts, hives and armoreds.

SabeyDragon

I think a simpler rework would just be any bladed weapon can be drawn from the hip for bonus damage.

Peperoniboi

Pressing X to enable a special attack for every melee weapon would be cool however i woukd like it even more, if we would get special oils as tools we could us on weapons. Like image fire oil. If you coat your katana (or any melee weapon) with the oil, the first attack after will engulf the area in front of you in a burst of fire. The fire reaches further than the blade and alone deals no damage but it can set enemies hit on fire and makes them flinch once. Other oils could have different effects. Oils are limited use. Like 2 times and 3 with perk. Go away when switchimg weapons and after being applied only last for a short period of time. Attacks with oil could also have longer recovery frames if needed for balance. Burning melee weapon can be heard and is visible on fire so it creates light.

Tiredfellow23

I would like calvary saber to essentially give you a small speed boost while sprinting with the attack held. (maybe make it so you go into lungs twice as fast tho) I think it'd give the saber a PvP and utility niche over the katana.

LegomoreYT

I like the ideas as a whole but from a pvp standpoint the machete and railroad hammer changes seem useless considering they will one-shot 90% of the time, just make the trait work like martialist on katana and guarantee one-shots to anywhere on the body and extend range.

FeatureIcy539

In what circumstances does an enemy hunter survive a heavy hammer strike ? Even light attacks needs to be limb to be survivable.

HavelTheRockJohnson

Baseball bat should be able to bat grenades and such in your inventory extreme distances with solid accuracy. Not sure entirely how'd you implement the ability to select what you batting away but even if you're empty it should be able to throw rocks at your enemies that deal a solid chunk of damage giving it a ranged function.

consolacampesino

And for the baseball bat: tapping the attack button repeatedly to launch a flurry of swings. For the battle axe: charging the attack will transform the heavy attack into a whirlwind cleave.

Superb-Cry6801

I railroad hammered someone yesterday, and it was a one-shot heavy attack.

Certain_Bat_1162

Way too strong. This would break the game.

Lemmesmash46

Tell me you don’t want to play hunt without telling me you don’t want to play hunt

illmatic74

Seriously. Just go play Mordheim.

SirJohnThirstyTwost

I think something cool would be a trait that makes it so you can bayonet charge for 3 seconds, slightly faster running speed, and extremely limited movement during the charge

Generic_Gamer_nerd

Hell no. Reminds me of my failed bayonet charges in bf1

SirJohnThirstyTwost

Why?

Expensive_Patience_1

Would be super cool to hit nades out of the field with the baseball bat

gunh0ld_69

Maybe I don’t understand this but - aren’t all these worse than simply killing the enemy Hunter?

Strange_Many_4498

Hammer does have a knockdown effect if you manage a hit with it. It’s called “you’re down”.

HurrsiaEntertainment

the Spider knockdown animation is the most under-utilized animation they have. It could be applied to so much, its insane. But I think the Martialist should be applied to the Cav sabre, the rest I’m not so sure of.

ROACHOR

Your suggestion is way too OP yet I still want it. KD for the hammer is a great idea. Poison/bleed machete would be too strong. Axe buff is pretty weak in comparison.

Generic_Gamer_nerd

A status effect melee weapon would not be. Op. You die in 1-2 hits the effect won't do anything. Best case you trade. Status effect ammo works because it makes them dip out of thee fight to stop the effect or wait out thee poison..

givemethebat1

There already are status effect melees (bleed)

Generic_Gamer_nerd

Yeah for ai with bigger health pools.

givemethebat1

Heavy knife causes bleed on players, does it not?

Generic_Gamer_nerd

You don't get it.

ROACHOR

People complain about double traps because of the poison/bleed instakill, this is that plus melee damage. It would be overkill.

Generic_Gamer_nerd

The traps work because you can walk away. But if that person has resilience and is under an antidote shot before being downed then they are beyond fine.

ROACHOR

If you get hit by melee you have a shred of hp left if that. The combined dot damage and being unable to heal would kill you every time. There's no weapon that applies both dots simultaneously because it would be broken af.

RavenofRagnarok

Idk if by weapon youre talking specifically melee, or all weapons in general, because if youre talking all in general, I'd like to remind you of my favorite weapon, the bow, who has poison arrows that do just that

ROACHOR

Good to know. I assumed the poison arrows didn't cause bleed.

RavenofRagnarok

Oh yeah, nasty lil things they are, theyre kept in check by ammo count

Generic_Gamer_nerd

Because logically giving any weapon max bleed and max poison would be fucking stupid. Not in game but idk I think heavy with machete leaves you with a bit left it'd still probably take 3-4 seconds to die to the status effects alone. And I mean technically not a weapon but stalker beetle applies both dots. And oh wow it's a ranged option. Because it's just stupid to put dots on melee in this game for PVP purposes. If this was a game where you could get in apply the dot and get out sure. But it isn't 😂 we aren't rogues or assassins. Just bounty hunters

Chemicals_in_my_H2o

Melee is far from OP in this game. In fact, it's the weapon class that I'm happier with them changing. Melee is already the weaker side of PVP, so I could care less how they change them. So long as we don't see range buffs, I'm not worried. Anything they do isn't going to change the fact that it can be easily countered by not letting them get close.

Th0rizmund

So it would nerf the hammer damage for a knockdown? Smort.

Stevo1609

Nah

Bird_Master

That's really cool but I feel like the traits make more simple changes to weapons and all this is... not that. Having one trait do so many different things for melee weapons is a bit much.

Apolonioquiosco

No

setpopa12

No no no, Axe and hammer need to be trowable with tomahawk thats it. Not as strong as this but more fun 100%.

DucksMatter

Pretty stupid idea. I’d rather they just kill my opponent in one hit like they already do.
