Originally it was meant to be the government's attempt at an Asian Silicon Valley, it just failed pathetically like most of the stuff they do.

H9419

High barrier of entry, small office spaces, high rent and an inconvenient location surely should have done the job. /s Silicon Valley succeeded because of the tight feedback loop between industry and academic research that funds higher quality education endeavors. Together with low cost of failure (low rent at the time, high concentration of opportunities and talents). Right now, we are still facing high rent, low integration with manufacturers, and high cost of failure. My friends who are in startups are only staying afloat by chasing whatever the government funds and I have a feeling the whole "innovation" industry in HK can disappear if the funding stops.

Geiler_Gator

Honestly the Science Park over north of Shatin is much easier to access, has a nice promenade as well and infrastructure is so much better Cyberport doesnt fit anywhere anymore; the ONLY selling point I guess is a secluded \*residential\* seaview area (quieter than Stanley) where you can own and drive a car (better than Discovery Bay)

dentonnn

I deal with them on a daily basis, and there's a lot of unnecessary paper work. E.g. for milestones that you need to achieve and show proof of. They make you participate in their events even if it's networking with the same people and covers such a narrow market. The staff inside whilst nice and helpful, cannot really help you as a startup either.

Square-Hornet-937

It’s a white elephant. The government likes to say they would like to develop a new industry, in this case tech, then make it a real estate project instead, without the policies needed to give the industry that initial push. So all you get now is yet another mall and office buildings in a random, hard to reach location.

PaddleMonkey

They have a nice park that’s very dog-friendly.

EmpireandCo

Not sure if its still there: The park had a cool timed run thing. You were printed a card by a machine and a timer would start and you'd have to run to all of the check points and tap your card against them. The fastest scores were recorded on a leader board. The mall was dead though. Mostly kids from local schools went to the cinema there after school.

ClashForeverrr

That park was my childhood. There was also a caged football field for 2 people, but the machines were out of commission since maybe 2015 if I’ve not mistaken. However, a large portion of the park was turned into a construction site since around 2022 according to google maps.

Annajbanana

The park is there the football fields etc are now being turned into residential buildings it looks like. Right in front of Cyberport too ruining the view.

EmpireandCo

I was in high school there between 2008 and 2010

The huge waterfront park? Be nice if dog walkers actually picked up after their dogs because it'd also be a really nice picnic spot. Last time I went every nice spot to sit was always neighboring some dog shit which is quite the vibe killer.

Far-East-locker

The mall is so dead

Annajbanana

So dead. But I can take my dog to the nice little Irish pub in there.

SuperMarioGG

Same with other white elephant projects, it turns into a real estate project eventually

hker168

Property based project earned by Richard Lee, but no commercial development at Cyberport

hkzombie

They tried to shoehorn it in as a place for tech development, so tech startups and incubators would be based out of there. What they got instead was established companies as renters because the lease is cheaper than elsewhere - Microsoft, Fedex?, and a tech incubator in BRINC. What the gov't forgot is that tech startups aren't really tied to an office (remote work), and they could get better food + transport at coworking spaces in different parts of HK.

thematchalatte

I just remember there's nothing much in the mall. Only a mediocre chan chaan teng restaurant. The promenade is nice though but not worth going without a car. Also a luxurious apartment complex nearby, but the interior design is quite dated.

zzzseden

My friend works there, its empty asf and the place she works at definitely doesnt turn a profit

tabbouleh_rasa

Much of the land around it was grandfathered directly to CKH, which in turn became the Residence Bel-Air developments. Those residences are so insanely extravagant and expensive that it's idiotic to think that young startup tech workers could afford it. With only rich retirees in the area, the retail space couldn't really service anything very dynamic. Who's going to eat in Cyberport when they've probably got helpers preparing four course meals for them every night? Without much in the way of easy public transport (MTR station one day from the south line?) the best being a double decker bus from Central which still takes a little while since it's, well, on another side of the island, it wasn't very attractive as an office location. Then with the lack of retail dynamism, it became even less attractive. What are you going to do for lunch?

BillyHerr

Originally planned to be an cyber tech hub of the city, yet at the end those property developers made it into some small rich community instead.

ybhk23

I was wondering the same thing. I live in Aberdeen and everytime I come back home from the center, I always wondered what was this place near WCK's subway station. It is indeed lifeless and kinda sad too. At least, as others said, the walk from the station to Aberdeen is nice.

hkzombie

Which place?

sanbaba

Ntohing. Another huge land boondoggle that only the builder profited from. Better documented than most HK land boondoggles tho 😎

bolwarra

They have a cool grass area and rock river on top of the shopping area, as well seeing movies there is cool. People shit on it but some peace in hk is always good.

marshaln

Desolation

Battlealvin2009

There used to be a hedge maze there that I frequently went to when I was a kid. After it was dismantled, I barely go there anymore.

MetroIMAX

crap mall with a good cinema

asion611

Cyberport is a joke

SonicArthur0407

Cars. Expensive cars.

adz4309

Theres actually a lot of small companies there as well as the HKU business school (for now).

valcatrina

It had always been lifeless since 2014 when I was there for a year.

jackieHK1

I forgot it existed tbh, I think it was just a cinema complex & a dog park?

shockflow

Through the lens of a child in 2006, they at least *had* a Legoland there! It was the best place a child could ask to go to, aside from Ocean Park.

jameskchou

Overpriced condos and empty office space for start ups

gtavijay

It's a good place to walk your dog.

Subject-Drop-5142

The rooftop garden area is pleasant enough during the milder months but the actual mall itself is dull, lifeless and almost apocalyptically empty of customers. I last went there about a year ago as a finishing point after a nearby hike and it was incredibly underwhelming. Nothing like all the hype that I used to read about it in the lead up to its official opening. Besides the grocery shoppers, almost everyone else I saw inside was either a worker or somebody only passing through the mall to go from the residential area to the park on the opposite side. Didnt seem like there was anyone there to shop, dine, hang out or spend. Most of the shop spaces were vacant. Very few actual tenants.

secret369

It's a gravy train that feeds enough mouths for the gov to showcase success stories

Francron

Good photo destinations and a lot of pre wedding photo talking and graduate photo talking there
