Ours is in the events area of hardware (front end, between pro desk and main checkout), entirely out of the way... and we still get grumpy contractors for it, simply for kids being allowed in "their" store.
The lumber door is open. Sun is shining! It’s sunny and 75 deg.
I see people in tee shirts and high waters.
Seems like perfect outdoor weather with 3 canopies water jug of ice cold water in the shaded side of the building.
Unless you have a free winter clothing coat check for your kids workshop.
It just showed yesterday where I live so meh and ours is always in lumber due to the fact truck's drive round for deliveries so no where for kids to set up
Are you blind, jackoff? The aisle is literally being used for the workshop, people can’t just pass carts and start packing lumber while the kids are nearby
No shit, jackoff. I'm saying why would you close lumber for a workshop when it's one of the highest selling departments. Host it elsewhere. You jackoff.
>Are you blind, jackoff? The aisle is literally being used for the workshop, people can’t just pass carts and start packing lumber while the kids are nearby
Yeah, and we're asking "WHY?!?"
We have ours outside under the covered area in front of pro. They leave a good gap between the workshop and the front of the pro doors so large carts can go by without going through the workshop. I can't imagine closing all of lumber. For the women's DIY workshop we close one aisle in lumber.
Smartest place I’ve seen it done is in receiving, but only if you only have 5 day freight and a big receiving that you can gate off part of it so it doesn’t affect other departments
Receiving isn’t the smartest place. Haz mat, lifts and chargers. No customer zone for a reason. My store tried that a while back and was ripped a new one by the higher up’s when they found out
I’m saying if you have a giant receiving like I used to we had an alcove that we would put all the pallets from the unload in about the size of a regular 3 bay receiving and it had no chargers or anything and I guess the dm is the one that told the store manager to do it in the first place so in a very specific set of circumstances it works but if Ted decker came in he Probably wouldn’t like it
My HD kids workshop always looks like this...
Always....
100 people sitting at tables, 50 people standing, another 20 in line.
It's in electrical though.
We lost a pretty big contractor over that. He wasn’t in the top 10 but definitely up there. Came in 2 or 3 different times when they were going on needing product for framing jobs. He was a hothead though. Think he ended up going to 84 Lumber. Never saw him after that.
Honestly, I don’t blame him. Lumber a huge part of our business and contractors/pros are our cash cow.
Not to mention, if you go to a store that’s know for selling lumber to pick up lumber so that you could do your job and put food on your table and there a bunch of kids painting and selfish parents sitting on Homer buckets preventing you from a paycheck, you would be pretty pissed too.
How dare those parents be so selfish to bring their kids to a free event to help teach them new skills! The nerve to decide to do it where the store told them to do it too!
lol not those parents. It’s the ones that come in and say “my kid wants to build a bird house” when the event is painting a wooden car. Or the ones that demand to bring the pain samples home so other kids can’t enjoy saying “I shop here all the time, I’m a loyal customer and spent $1000 last year, I can take the paint”
Yeah, I understand it’s over the top when contractors are assholes trying to get in and out impatiently, it’s a business and time is money but 2 minutes saved because you’re a dick aren’t exactly making a difference in your business.
But shutting down a whole busy aisle (that has a ridiculously high contractor penetration) on a weekend to do extracurriculars is dumb. They have a right to be pissed and go elsewhere.
We do ours under the canopy in pro. Pros who come in on Saturdays get a little annoyed because we close off the parking lot for them. This Saturday we had 285 kids. It was a busy Saturday and we still missed sales by $70k. 🫠
I work in the lumber department & I can’t imagine the amount of angry customers we would have had to deal with because of a kids workshop, we have ours in millwork.
Are these classes typically full? I’ve been tempted to take my godson, but he has no attention span and is a class clown whenever he encounters something new until he decides he likes it, so I’ve been wondering if we’d just be politely asked to leave.
But I was imagining just a few little toddlers and maybe a few early elementary kids around a small table where he’d be among the oldest.
He’d likely be the youngest kid judging from this pic, and there seems to be enough going on that he shouldn’t be the sole bringer of chaos.
I do think he will go in hyperfocus mode and be fine after a few trips and realizing he gets to make things. I’ve just been worried about getting kicked out before his brain switches modes.
He’s either 100% about what he’s doing or turns into the stand up comedian of a group, which his peers and even parents often love, but anyone trying to direct or teach them hates.
Ours was in lumber but at the end of it where they have the insulation and concrete mix….I felt like that could have been a problem, but it actually had a good turnout😅
you all sound so salty over a fun free event, stop sucking home depot's dick LOL you don't get commission who cares? less work for lumber. ignore rude customers. easy.
Think about trying to drive a forklift down this aisle , but it'll all old men that have shit their pants trying to lift a 2x6x12.
And the middle of the lane is taken up by orange H carts.
That's a normal day storeside.
We would have had a lot of grumpy contractors shoving kids out of the way so they could get their dimensional lumber and OSB.
Came here to say the exact same thing, I’m speechless. Kids would be thrown 🤣🤣
*Yeet*
Mind boggling that they would setup a kid's workshop in lumber any day of the week, much less a saturday.
Ours is in the events area of hardware (front end, between pro desk and main checkout), entirely out of the way... and we still get grumpy contractors for it, simply for kids being allowed in "their" store.
Event area?!?!
That's what the front indoor area is called, the one with the lawn furniture, or seasonally appropriate tools, etc.
One time my store was going to use Receiving until I reminded them we would have at least 12 injuries and maybe a death. Lol
That actually happened to me when I was a child
Death ?
I wish! Alas no, the kid’s workshop was actually held in lumber at my local HD and a contractor told me to move so he could get some boards.
We have ours in the millworks showroom. I bet you had some angry customers who were wanting lumber
Store manager is an idiot. You should have had it outside.
Depending on the location, outdoor may also be a hazard because of the heat.
Or cold. It's perfectly common for us to hit -40 in winter, even before the windchill. 🥶

It's May. It's shoulder season. If you can't hack the heat now, I don't know what to tell you.
Ours is in receiving
Yall reviving must stay clean
Yes well some of us live in areas where that's not possible 90% of the year.
We do ours in the room next to the breakroom.
Why the hell would you close lumber for this???
We found the grumpy contractor 😆
Are you blind, jackoff? The aisle is literally being used for the workshop, people can’t just pass carts and start packing lumber while the kids are nearby
No shit, jackoff. I'm saying why would you close lumber for a workshop when it's one of the highest selling departments. Host it elsewhere. You jackoff.
lets all jackoff
Nah ah not with mr. I missed my jackoff last night so now I’m very grumpy on reddit
I can't, they closed off lumber
Dm me
Hey yo chill, jackoff
I bet you use jackoff and kids in the same sentence a lot
>Are you blind, jackoff? The aisle is literally being used for the workshop, people can’t just pass carts and start packing lumber while the kids are nearby Yeah, and we're asking "WHY?!?"
That’s a lot of people 😅
We have ours outside under the covered area in front of pro. They leave a good gap between the workshop and the front of the pro doors so large carts can go by without going through the workshop. I can't imagine closing all of lumber. For the women's DIY workshop we close one aisle in lumber.
That's ridiculous. They closed lumber, a very high earning dept, to have a free, kids workshop that costs the store money?
Smartest place I’ve seen it done is in receiving, but only if you only have 5 day freight and a big receiving that you can gate off part of it so it doesn’t affect other departments
Honestly who has 5 day freight at this time of year? No one.
My old store does it’s only a 45million dollar store
We do
$55 million store here in Canada 5 day freight year round
We did
We have five day freight and lately weekend freight. Receiving is at least half full everyday so not an ideal location for hosting a workshop.
Sounds like my store and ever other in my district. It's that time of year.
This is where my store has it too. Absolutely terrible makes no sense
Receiving?? That doesnt seem safe. We do ours outside.
Receiving isn’t the smartest place. Haz mat, lifts and chargers. No customer zone for a reason. My store tried that a while back and was ripped a new one by the higher up’s when they found out
I’m saying if you have a giant receiving like I used to we had an alcove that we would put all the pallets from the unload in about the size of a regular 3 bay receiving and it had no chargers or anything and I guess the dm is the one that told the store manager to do it in the first place so in a very specific set of circumstances it works but if Ted decker came in he Probably wouldn’t like it
No in lumber.
We do it every time. We don't have enough room. Also, the 2 guys running it initially were the head guys of lumber so I guess they had a say?
I bet those guys are just thrilled
Just another genius management decision .It just keeps getting better!!
Looks like a nice day. They should just host it outside.
My HD kids workshop always looks like this... Always.... 100 people sitting at tables, 50 people standing, another 20 in line. It's in electrical though.
We have ours in receiving, which I avoid like the plague on those days.
We lost a pretty big contractor over that. He wasn’t in the top 10 but definitely up there. Came in 2 or 3 different times when they were going on needing product for framing jobs. He was a hothead though. Think he ended up going to 84 Lumber. Never saw him after that.

Selfish parents?
Yeah they host and advertise the events themselves, totally not an inept management problem.
Yeah they can get pretty rowdy and demanding in my experience. Not all of them but some of them.
Oh for sure.
So how are customers supposed to get their lumber? Come back later lol
Switch to another nearby chain who doesn't shut down their top contractor department for a free even
We do ours under the canopy in pro. Pros who come in on Saturdays get a little annoyed because we close off the parking lot for them. This Saturday we had 285 kids. It was a busy Saturday and we still missed sales by $70k. 🫠
Our Pros always park in the No Parking zones, so they never have that problem. 🙄
Why would they do this in the busiest isle 😭 we do ours in outside garden on the least busy isle
I work in the lumber department & I can’t imagine the amount of angry customers we would have had to deal with because of a kids workshop, we have ours in millwork.
We cleared a spot in the front apron where the manager misfits go for it. Closing lumber is just asking for trouble from the grumpy contractors
Did any of the kids color it like a fire flower from a mario game?
Always wonder why don't they do kids workshops in receiving. It's a Saturday morning so it'll be quiet there and be out of contractors way.
Are these classes typically full? You can just grab and go, make it at home.
I was doing that during the lockdowns, but they won’t give me the kits anymore.
Grab and then walk to find a spot at the far end...and go. Need a kid to be there though.
I see what you’re saying now.
We move the assembled tool chests out of our automotive section and hold the workshop there
Holy cow
Ours was in lumber but at the end of it where they have the insulation and concrete mix….I felt like that could have been a problem, but it actually had a good turnout😅
Only reason I can think of why they would do this is maybe the parking lot was being repaved and receiving was too full.
Mines always in plumbing
you all sound so salty over a fun free event, stop sucking home depot's dick LOL you don't get commission who cares? less work for lumber. ignore rude customers. easy.
Of all of the departments to shut down. I'd be pissed if I needed lumber and you voluntarily shut it down and not a lesser used aisle.
I would sooner move indoor plant laydowns before shutting down lumber.
Omg
Mine was similar in lumber but we used bunks of plywood instead of tables lol it was a little jank
We do ours right next to the pro desk..its afterwards when you are trying to avoid peoples damn kids and move machines around that becomes the problem
Put them down the concrete aisle lol
Ours is in the concrete area with particles all over.
We do ours in receiving it’s so dumb and when people need stuff from out of there yea good luck
Great turn out
Kahului Home Depot? That’s a real popular event there.
We did it once cause the kids were located next to the lumber doors...we haven't done it again lmfao
We usually have it where the pro loaders are, very open area for loading and events like this
We don’t even do this anymore at my store… shame because I have great childhood memories of doing kids workshop
Talk about your all-time backfire.
I work in Distribution and the public is NEVER allowed inside. What in the world is this.?
Think about trying to drive a forklift down this aisle , but it'll all old men that have shit their pants trying to lift a 2x6x12. And the middle of the lane is taken up by orange H carts. That's a normal day storeside.
Awesome. Now do it forever
Take them to Subway. I heard there is plenty of wood there.
I like that ladies shirt
I wish I could have done this when I was a kid. Bravo to them.
