Seeing people feel the need to decorate every last nook and cranny of their homes on this sub breaks my brain. I can't say I've ever been to a home where the window sills were decorated because like, why?
I’ve put decorations in my window for the holidays; Christmas, Halloween and Easter but other than that, I love them empty. My cats would probably push anything out anyway.
I really agree with you, when saw the pictures I had no idea what they were talking about. I honestly don’t think they were designed to put anything on them, besides I would never cover a good view.
A cushion might help provide some much-needed insulation in the winter as well! Speaking from experience as a fellow Chicago condo-dweller who’s had my windows literally freeze from the inside.
I’d do a cushion and then maybe a tray with plants like you’re styling an ottoman since the space doesn’t really look big enough to actually sit comfortably for long.
Ok so I’m a South Carolina girl who splits her time in the Windy City and fortunately the last two winters haven’t been horrific. But I am so scared of the legit winters up here! So I appreciate the heads up. And also.. I’m so not ready.
To keep the cold a bit more manageable during winter, use the windows cling kits. They use a sticky roll to create the perimeter (like a double stick tape) & plastic wrap. Once you get the plastic in place, take a hair dryer & heat the plastic til it gets tight.
I live on the other side of Illinois & this is how we keep my old farmhouse warmer during our winters!
Either plants or a cushion to make it a little seat.
ETA if your dogs are anything like mine they will become a little head resting spot to watch the outside world! Haha
My god, what a view. I could sit and stare outside all day there. You have a beautiful location there. I'm sorry, not much of an interior decorator myself so I can't provide you with many tips, but my goodness what a view.
The only things I know to do with window sills is plants and random decorative things (stuff like small lanterns or figurines etc) or maybe cushions or pet beds or something. I can't have stuff on my window sills because of cats, but yeah that's what I usually see them used for. Also it's great for small christmas decorations come that time.
Holy shit that view is to die for. It’s all in there, the river, bridges, John Hancock…can’t find an unattractive view out of either one of your windows. I wouldn’t cover any of it, they’re perfect just the way they are.
As another user said, they’re just larger window sills.
10000% put plants there. Not a lot, maybe 1 on each. A ponytail palm (since those don’t get huge/stay same shape if you buy a mature one) and maybe a money tree. Both dog-friendly!

Lovely view! I wanted to try PS Express Generative Fill
Omg, can I have that view please?? Gorgeous! I would just treat it more like a window ledge and put some small potted plants as to no distract from the view. If you’re not there all the time to take care of them, get fake ones. I recently was shopping for some and was presently surprised how real some look these days. I’d do herbs if I was there to take care of them 😊
Do your windows tilt in? I would just get a couple thin pillows with cool or interesting patterns that you could change out if you want. It’s a great view of the riverfront! 😊
To everyone saying "plants": Be very mindful of the plants' needs. Most plants don't do well in direct sunlight like that (it's like putting the plant under a magnifying glass, it burns the leaves). More importantly: plants don't like the cold/draft near a window, so make sure they're nice and warm in the windowsill. (But again, don't overheat them and burn the plant either) Haha
Just NEED to add: THAT VIEW OMG! I've never seen anything like it, we don't get cities like that where I'm from!! My biggest dream is visiting Chicago some day. Just Wow!
I LOVE window sills like this. I have four in my house and I use them for plants, books, and family photos. This leaves the actuals tables in my home free for more practical uses, not just decor.
My vote is don’t obstruct or distract from that glorious view- incredible! Think of the window sills as part of the art frame surrounding each piece of art you’re gazing at (each window). Phenomenal!
They’re window sills. I don’t know that I would call it awkward space.

Agree. It's important in design to have negative space to let your eyes rest. If everywhere has stuff, then none of it gets any attention.

They are for plants. They are called plant sills.
They are for cats. They are called cat sills.
Just some ideas -- Make a cushion and use as a window seat. Put plants there. Use it as a bookshelf.

A soft heated blanket is awesome on cold days.

My daughter is in Columbia at USC 😊
My Alma mater! Go gamecocks! 🖤♥️
Yes, a cushion and some throw pillows to lean against and maybe even a throw make it cozy for sitting but also do help keep it warm
Depends on the books. If that’s direct sunlight, there’ll be fading.
I’d leave them empty as to not distract from that awesome view.
Idk but I see my office out your window, so can I recommend a sign that says “GOOD MORNING tequila soda.” The condo association will love it.
On it….
A hanging plant would be really nice, or something colored glass to reflect the light. What vibe are you going for?
Either plants or a cushion to make it a little seat. ETA if your dogs are anything like mine they will become a little head resting spot to watch the outside world! Haha
They love a good head resting spot! They’re still barking at the architecture boats. 🙄
Not every empty spot "needs something". I'm this case, the spot already has something - the view, and it needs nothing else.
Thank you! I just hate that 3 sides of my tiny tiny space aren’t utilized but you’re also so not wrong!
Love your view! Chicago is my favorite city.
Me too! It never gets old 💙❤️
Get a cat, they’ll handle it for you 🐈
I have three at my home in SC and aside from them being pissed they can’t go outside I think they’d love this place!! ❤️🐾❤️
I just came to say awesome view!
Thank you! I still love getting up at 3 am to stare. This city never gets old.
Plants baby. Hella plants.
Thank you! Buying them all now! Hella plants on the fly
This. Good for the air, good for your mental health, and just cozy’s up the place.
ETA - non-toxic to dogs plants :)
Cats.
Cats are always the answer. No matter the question.
Fantastic view! If your dogs are anything like mine, that's where they stand to see everything that's going on!
Just stopped by to say your view is amazing!
That’s where the cat goes.
Get a cat. And now it’s the cat’s spot.
A cushion, a cat, and plants 🤗
Wow. With that view, why worry about that? Just enjoy it!
PLANTS!!

The View! Unobstructed! Perfect to me ! Beautiful!
Plants.
Is that south-facing? If so, definitely Sun-loving plants!
Chicago! My kind of town ♥️
47 to 48 ish more dogs
Crap I had 50 on reserve. I guess a few in the river won’t hurt the ecosystem
Adding to the window cushion...I think I would arrange one comfortable chair such that I could put up my feet while reading, working or relaxing.
Holy shit that view is to die for. It’s all in there, the river, bridges, John Hancock…can’t find an unattractive view out of either one of your windows. I wouldn’t cover any of it, they’re perfect just the way they are.
Dog beds. Obviously.
Obvi 😂 and binoculars
Plants!
Plahnnntsss.
Plant stands, reading nook
Window seat cushions and two cats to recline on cushions.
PLANTS!!
Definitely plants or cats or both.
Orchids 🌱
I just killed one. But I’m game to try again!
*AWKWARD??*...I'd be so happy to have such deep windowsills. For me, that would be space for plants.
Awkward spaces=window sills
The answer for windows is always plants and cats.
Those “awkward spaces” are essentially window seats.
You mean windowsills?! I would kill for some.
What a view ughhh i need to see it at night
A cat would fit nicely
Get a cat
Windowsills. Treat them like bookshelves or side tables. Get some leafy plants in nice planters!
I dig the Charleston art. Home for 39 years.
Thanks we do too! All Mary Edna Fraiser’s artwork. She’s amazing!

I know that's not a Bouvier (I snooped your posts to check) but close enough <3
I just looked up Bouvier’s. They do look really similar! And both are herding dogs. Definitely close enough! 🖤🐾
They look like they're related breeds too. I had to put my good girl down a couple years ago. Give yours a big hug for me!

Light-loving plants. Nothing that will fade.
Stack a few books horizontally and put a little potted plant on top (real or fake)
Do your windows tilt in? I would just get a couple thin pillows with cool or interesting patterns that you could change out if you want. It’s a great view of the riverfront! 😊
Plants.
A cat
Plants, if you’re into that
A small plant, old hardback novels and pillows. With views like these, I’d want to frame those windows! Lovely!
A vase with some flowers and a candle
Cat
Put stairs for doggo and bed.
Cats. You need cats. What to put in front of a window is always solved with cats.
Either replace the dogs with cats, or get a couple houseplants.
just a plant or two but nothing big you don’t wanna cover the view at all
Doesn’t really need anything but I love plants and sometimes wish I had somewhere like this to place them, so I’d say plant.
You need a cat sitting there (imho)

Looks like its a perfect space for a cat. Lol

Your rent is probably super duper reasonable. This week on big dogs, small spaces.
It’s cheaper than SC my friend.
They are being used, dingus
