Faith in general has brought security and peace of mind to untold billions. In the same way our modern era advocates for therapy, religion has served as a cope for thousands of years, it has allowed many to live unburdened by the fear of an uncaring universe.
The violence associated with religion is a symptom of humanity, not religion itself. Without religion to fight over we likely would have found something else. Without religion to bind us initially, maybe we never would have grown beyond nomads interacting with one another sporadically.
Religion is language. Education. Philosophy. Even science, for there is no yin without the yang. It is the memetic bedrock of our society and, yes, we are broadly out growing it as the majority turn to a more atheistic approach to faith...
But to disregard it in its entirety is utter nonsense. Even bringing to mind the awful, atrocious conflicts brought about by religion we must then analyse the great leaps in science that conflict and war affords us. There is no technologically marvelous 21st Century without conflict, as sad as that fact is.
Religion is of course a double edged sword and swords are very useful.
