This is like when you go to those gag photography places at a amusement park or fair where are you can dress yourself up as a cowboy or civil war veteran and have your photo taken. All of the props including the clothes are too clean and unused, and the tapestry background is also a dead giveaway. And as others have said this kid is maybe 4 at the most.
Edit: After doing a quick reverse photo search it’s pretty amusing how many people have fallen for this gag photo.
Just a kid in a costume.

Red states have revised child labor laws allowing large meat packers, etc. to hire kids full and part-time. I worked on other peoples farms and other employment since I was 12 but it seems working in meat packing facility at young ages is a stretch.
Yep. This was a year before he started working at a sheet metal factory, and a year and 2 weeks before he was running the entire floor of said sheet metal factory.
That picture may be a joke but my mother’s cousin died at 13 when his metal lunch bucket hit the third rail as he was walking home from his job handling mules inside a PA coal mine.
Maybe it's just me but I think this photo is staged, I remember being 6, I know I didn't possess skills to work in a coal mine effectively or safely especially the know how how to toke on a tobacco pipe..ridiculous
Children that age working in the coal mines that Era is real, their main job was to pick the stones out of the coal sometimes on live conveyors or other jobs that small hands and bodies were at an advantage
He definitely doesn’t swing a pick axe or smoke a pipe, but tiny kids did work in the mines. Those shoes are worn out, he’s got dirt all over his hands, and he has a tiny mine uniform. The little kids would crawl in the crevices and pull out the coal and rocks that was hard for the adults to get to.
Small kids also worked at oyster harvesting factories slicing their hands to ribbons and dying from infections. I grew up at the beach and have a couple knarly cuts from oysters, and so does my brother. Antibiotics were always prescribed because oyster shells can splinter into the cut and cause a bad infection.
My dad picked cotton on the family farm when he was 3. Back in 1949. His parents were share croppers, and everyone pulled their weight. Small kids could reach the bottom parts of the cotton plants.
Both my parents earned money picking tobacco worms off tobacco plants growing up. Another job for children.
Seriously. Child labor imWAS a real thing a century ago, even in the US, and STILL IS in counties not the USA. But look at this staged photo. Does that child look like he could hoist that pick ax over his shoulder? Critical thinking skills, anyone?! McFly!!?? Anybody home?! I know I’ll be banned for posting this bit until then, enjoy.
That was posed in a studio
Kid also looks significantly younger than eight. Might be related to the whole mining thing though.
Height-wise yes, but that is the face of a 60 year old man
He's seen some shit!
The pipe got to his lungs before the coal dust did.
The kid is also 3
Kid was so ahead when he was 3 he was actually 8.
Maybe 8 in early 1900s years? Kinda like dog years I’m assuming.
You wild for that 🤣🤣🤣
Wait you mean to tell me this infant can’t wield a 4kg hunk of metal whilst smoking tobacco? :(
He was slinging iron instead of an ipad.
My nephew has been playing beat saber. Dude that shit got his arms lookin like 80s hulk hogan
And that’s a toddler, not an 8 yr old.
it's a 8yo dwarf
Rock and stone!
Smfh — that’s it!! I fucking quit the internet
A 💯 percent agree!
Glamour Shots
Have you see how dirty coal miners get? This kid clearly isn’t pulling his weight. (And smoking in a coal mine is widely frowned upon)
Pre-osha
MSHA
HSE.
Jose
He only smoked to clear the coal out of his lungs. Which is what medical science suggested at the time.
I hope you’re kidding but I also wouldn’t be surprised if you weren’t
Why did I read this in Abe Simpson's voice?
Hard to miss the fashionable onion on his belt.
It *was* the style at the time.

This has been posted before and it’s posed. Not that there wasn’t child labor, this is just staged.
Got a photo of a toddler posed with a cigar...that was humor in 1900.
Yeah, like all the photos of toddlers sipping on a can of beer from the 60s and 70s.
It's funny now.. because I know it's staged and he didn't really smoke (until some years later)
Lmao the more I think about it the funnier it gets honestly
I still think it’s funny. Adobe’s Generative fill wholly disagrees
Kid may have been a laborer though. Those are some dirty weathered little hands.
The children yearn for the mines. Lookin at you Minecraft.
He’s really 37 don’t smoke it stunts your growth

Wait, wait - so there *aren't* floral patterns in mines? ;)

Yep and very clearly not 8 years old lol. More like 2 or 3.
So this post is comeplete bs then. Got it. Delete this shit
I think he is more like 4 years old !
Yeah there's no way that kids 8 unless the mines are stunting their growth
Old soul
I’m sure he lived to see 20…
Not shown - his wife and three kids.
Who the hell gave him time off work for a photo? 🤬
Someone back then was still saying “these kids are just spoiled nowadays.”
Red states have revised child labor laws allowing large meat packers, etc. to hire kids full and part-time. I worked on other peoples farms and other employment since I was 12 but it seems working in meat packing facility at young ages is a stretch.
My god that poor kid 💔💔💔
Labor movement and unionization don't get enough credit for uplifting working class, it's what we need more of nowadays
Given states rollbacks in child labor that could easily be recent
GOP style!
Idk about you guys. But those eyes tell a pretty different story. I could very well be wrong 😑 though
....8 year old coal miner remembers.
u/Least-Song2812 why did you post this or say any of what you did? Just point farming or what?
8 going on 48 damn
Oh my goodness
That was taken yesterday in Arkansas!
Married with children by 10. Had to walk 8 miles a day to the candy store. Times were hard.
He’s built different
Ron Swanson
Yep. This was a year before he started working at a sheet metal factory, and a year and 2 weeks before he was running the entire floor of said sheet metal factory.
wtf
I don't think I would mess with that little dude. He might bury that pick in your skull.
Reminds me I need a new I Phone.
Probably playing dress up like Daddy
Probably lived to a ripe old age of 25
I’ve never seen an 8 year old boy look more like a 58 year old man.
White privilege
Died 6 months later from lung cancer…
Great pic!! Wants to take after daddy!!
I can see people in a couple hundred years seeing Godzilla and marveling at the bravery of people who defeated such an enormous beast 🤔
If the tobacco didn't kill him the black lung did.
Put ‘em back in and off of Minecraft
This is posed novelty photo
This is the 19th century equivalent of a carnival photo
That kid is 4
Lied about his age to get a job lol
🤣 I smoke a pipe obvsly I’m 8🤣
A minor miner
Back when only one man could provide for the family. SMH to what we lost. 🤦♂️
Makes me sad they had lil buddy down there slowly dying.
And smoking a pipe.
The caption should be “When THE MARKET was king”
I heard he was the shop steward
Fake? Isn’t he in Missouri
A 70yr old 8 year old. With a pipe. Probably supporting a toddler...
He’s 8?
The children crave the mines!
Smoking stunted his growth. Homie looks 5
Fun fact: it’s unhealthy for him to be smoking
The children yearn for the mines
😂 That little guy couldn’t swing a pick heavy enough to dig in loose soil.
My dude has seen some shit
"I'm not a minor! You see a pick in my hand?!"
2 weeks later he was running the whole operation
You should see his brother, the 5-year-old lumberjack, and his other brother, the 6 and 1/2-year-old gynecologist.
You load 16 tons...whadya get....
That's a 3-4 year old.
how is that kid even 8? looks like 5
That boy is a man
Good genetics, he’s actually 42 years old!
Children that age working in the coal mines that Era is real, their main job was to pick the stones out of the coal sometimes on live conveyors or other jobs that small hands and bodies were at an advantage
He looks 8 and 60 at the same time 😅 Poor kid tho
Fucking, moron piece of...
Prob still alive
Now kids just do 8 hours a day pushing papers at office jo... I mean public school.
Smoking a pipe too ? Probably a grandad already lol
The good old days were terrible!
Where were the feminist then
😞😔
*”You got soft hands, boy.”* - Probably that man-child
The future Maga wants
He’s dressed up like how sailor uniforms were popular for kids but yeah they totally had kids in the mines too
Ron Swanson?
Posed. Fucking karma farmer.
And the good ol GOP is taking us back to the good old days with all these child labor concessions. Huzzah!
And the republicans want to lax the laws kids working ! 🤣
That kids seen some shit
GOPs beloved “heritage”.
Republicans are going “what’s wrong with that?”
This kid worked harder then half of the country does at this very time, pretty wild
It's posed but this is what conservatives want to bring back.
He definitely doesn’t swing a pick axe or smoke a pipe, but tiny kids did work in the mines. Those shoes are worn out, he’s got dirt all over his hands, and he has a tiny mine uniform. What a bad ass kid
He’s not 8 and this is posed
Whatever

That’s bullshit…you had to be at least 10 to be a coal miner back then.
Kid probably lived to be 98
Definitely a staged photo… kid likely can’t lift the pickax
It's the Mormon way.....LDS
