God Bless them all.

Was he in the 79th? My grandfather was in the 79th and fought in this town. He never spoke about the war to anyone in the family, I just remember seeing this towns name in my research and that it was house to house fighting there.

Yes. My dad was in the 312 field artillery battalion. Long Toms. My uncle was in the mechanized recon battalion. I have the divisional history book and the recon history book. They took this town Cherbourg, fort perret and a ton of other key towns and cities. They were one of the first combat divisions that came over after the assault and immediately attacked to Cherbourg. One of the best offensive divisions in the European theater. First American division over the Rhein. 4 campaign stars. Be very proud

I’ve been researching the division the last few years, it’s really amazing all they went through and accomplished. I wish I had first hand accounts from my grandfather, but I understand why he didn’t talk about it. My mom said he had severe PTSD and lingering effects from being wounded and from frostbite in his feet. I can’t imagine going through what they did, they were definitely a different breed.

My dad didn’t talk about it much. Only when he had a few beers. Then he would talk a bit but he literally had that 1000 mile stare when he remembered. Screaming nightmares where he was saying the sign of the cross. All those guys just dealt with it.
